The lions repeatedly called and wrote Barry Sanders before the draft that year, asking him if he was going to retire. Sanders ignored them, the Lions went into the draft thinking Sanders would play, and then he retired.

I think that was way worse than this situation.

I agree that it would have been better for Ricky to retire right after last season, so that the Dolphins could have patched the whole through the draft or free agents. Still, it is not like he is retiring the day before the super bowl.

Anyways, both Barry Sanders and Ricky Williams have some screws loose.

Sanders retired just a few years earlier than people expected him too though , and largely because he was unhappy with management (that never really put a winning team around him) and hated then Lions head coach Bobby Ross. Its not like he retired when he was 25 and full of potential, just because football was all of a sudden boring to him.

This is definitely more strange than Sanders retirement.

well given that it was right before training camp but think about if that were you. You've made millions , more than enough to retire on and do what you want to do. You know you're playing a sport which dramatically shortens the lifespan of those who play it. The desire to try as hard as you can is no longer there. Yes, there are thousands of fans whom you are likely to piss off and there is a team that you'll let down. But despite all of that it is your life.. do you do whats perhaps best for you or do you play halfheartedly, not perform as people expect.. get blasted for it and then end up quitting anyway? Not that i dont like the decision, but he's doing what he wants to do... and not bow to what other people want from him. Shrug, i can respect that. may not like it but it is his right and if he dun feel like it, then good luck. No if only butch davis in his newly minted military coup of the browns organization can get things to work.. i'd be a happy man

You guys also have to remember that he no longer is taking his meds for his personality disorder.So his perception is slighty askew right now. I'm glad he is at least man enough to admit he's got no love for the sport and is bowing out. Yes, the timing sucks. But I'd rather not see him play, than see him give a half assed attemt at playing.I know there are some players just kinda collecting a check. And that is sad.

You figure, with all that's happened in his short career. It's surprising he didn't have a major meltdown. You know like that Chicago Bear a few years ago (Alonzo Spellman?) All Ricky wants to do is chill and smoke a few blunts while discovering what the world has to offer. Come on, with the dreads he had. You knew he was rockin the Ganja.

Good for him. Sometimes you gotta look out for yourself and do whatever makes you happy. The circumstances weren't the best, but I can't fault him for trying to make his life better.

Besides, if you won a multi-million dollar lottery and notified your boss the next day that you 'retire' - should we call you a loser? :P
