So now I have to state the obvious every time or you're going to argue about it?

Nah, don't think so. It's more fun watching you guys make a big deal over something I didn't say.

Ok, but let's be realistic. Threats are words, not actions. We're talking about words justifying violence. If you agree that responding to a threat with violence is acceptable in some cases, you agree that responding to words with violence is acceptable in some cases.

Most verbal threats are not what you are calling "imminent threats", instead they are hot air. But that isn't necessarily how they are interpreted in the heat of the moment.
Exception proves the rule: violence is not an appropriate response to words.

    Well done Jack.

I missed your update to your previous plan which was to eat nothing but meat or something iirc. Seems a lot more healthy the way you're doing it.

Oi Jeebus you're a big fella.

    Congrats on the weight loss!

I'm 6'2" and prob not far off from 220, and I have the gut of a man in my mid-40's. lol

I imagine 220 on that frame looks real good.

    Again. Congratulations!

5'9, but my charisma makes me appear taller.

185 pounds, but my charisma makes me look more athletic.

That's what I'll keep telling myself, while ignoring the BMI calculator telling I'm overweight. I've got some middle-aged spread developing which is almost at the point of needing a lot of hard work to reverse.

I ate a ton of meat, fish and veggies. But when the dropping in poundage started going too fast, I added white rice and sweet potatoes to the mix. Very rarely I added pasta. Also rare but I tended to add bread and bready stuff as well, ate max twice in two weeks. Also, coffee, tea, water, yoghurt, milk, red wine are the only beverages on the allowed list.

You don't want to lose pounds too fast, you will have loose skin.

I also think the most important thing out of all of this is that I learned to cook my own shit. I follow a ton of youtube channels, have a ton of recipes on tap, unearthed a ton of old cook books, and also tried to understand the theory behind actually living a healthy lifestyle. I for one LOVE a tompoes, but I realized I can't eat one of these daily/weekly etc, so it becomes a very rare treat. Chocolate is my go to for sweet toothedness.

I did a whole lot of cardio though, walking mostly. I also have a few kettlebell @home workouts I keep perfecting, mostly squatting, deadlifts, overhead lifts and pushups. I need a pull up bar or something though, it's the only thing I'm missing. There's a football (soccer) goal post within 1km walking distance I can use for that, but it's too wide and becomes a grip exercise rather than a back exercise when I go for 50 reps. Also, there are fucking aggressive dogs in the vicinity of it.

I figured purposeful walking is where it's at. I don't walk for the sake of walking, but rather, I walk 2km, may 3km to get groceries, then carry the 10kg of groceries I get back. If I only did treadmill, I'd get bored immediately. Getting myself in situations like that, I'm forced to keep walking until I reach my home. Hence, I call this "purposeful" walking

I've seen pull-up bars that are meant to be mounted in a doorway.

Always sketched me out that the door isn't really designed to hold your weight like that, but I know someone who has one and says it's fine.

As long as you've got it properly screwed into the structure around the door, it will be fine.

The guy I know is my partner's brother, and I've seen his setup. It's effectively bolted to the wall above a door.

Warn them against the dangers of going from "I don't know" to "It must be" with no steps in-between, IMO.

Or not. I don't care if they choose ignorance.

It's a better game than I could come up with, but it seems a bit too lucky. There's no real strategy except stay as far from the ball at all times as you can.

So, it's pretty easy until the ball suddenly moves in a beeline straight at you at top speed. Then either your reflexes are fast enough to get out of the way or they're not.

    The music is good.

Yeah it's way more luck than skill, but for a first attempt at coding I'm pretty happy with it. The nerd in me enjoys writing code to fix "bugs", like I'd noticed that after the egg breaks, and the game is over, if you press space, that starts reading some of the code, which at first added a point before stopping the script. So I added a variable x which is a boolean (I learned that word), which means it's basically binary... when x=0 game is active, when x=1 game is over (x is set to 1 when the egg and ball touch or when edge=0). Now when we hit space, first thing the code does is check if x=0 or x=1, and if x=1 then it stops the script. That fixed the bug.

Understanding what I'm doing and why things happen is what I'm concerned with here, not making a skill-based game. Though I would like to make a better game. I wanted to write some code that tracked how far we move the egg and allocate points based on distance, but that isn't easy. That would make it more skill based.

Terminology: A game's loop cycle is counted in tics. Once through the cycle is a tic.

If you track the position of the egg each tic, in (x, y) coordinates, then you can store the prior position in memory, and use the Pythagorean formula to calculate the distance traveled between the 2 tics.

Assuming you have x and y as defined variables with the egg's position,

    distance_now = SQRT( (x - x_old)^2 + (y - y_old)^2 )
    x_old = x
    y_old = y

Then create another variable as a running sum of each tic's distance.

    distance_tot = distance_tot + distance_now

Then you can go back to the start of the game loop and redefine x and y the way you already were.

    Does that make sense?
You can find any pattern you want to any level of precision you want, if you're prepared to ignore enough data.
  35. #30335
Not really because I'm using visual coding, scratch isn't python. I mean, yes it makes sense, but I don't know how to apply that logic in scratch.

I figured if I could reset the x/y axis on a near-constant basis so that 0/0 was the position of the egg, then I could at least get a number for the distance moved, but you used a word there that I'd already thought about and didn't know how I was going to deal with it... Pythagorean! The operators I have access to don't include square root or even powers, which is all I really need. I have no idea how to code sq rt using just +-*/ so I was already resigned to the distance number not being perfect, even if I could figure out how to reset the x/y axis.

This scratch software is intended as an introduction to coding. You can do more than just what the default operators are for sure, but that involves writing your own code and integrating it. That's the deep end. I'm firmly in the shallow end right now.

I think it'd be more fun if there was some thinking you had to do. Like, vary the trajectory of the ball from straight to curved, have multiple balls, have the ball(s) change speed/direction in some way that isn't entirely random.

e.g. the ball(s) changes direction/speed every time it hits the wall. Use a Gaussian function to predict the next direction, z=0 means no change, z+ angles left, z- angles right and the further from 0 that z is, the more the change. Use (another) Gaussian to predict the new speed. Use another to determine linearity/curvature of trajectory.

Maybe instead of having game speed up at intervals, add another ball every once in a while. Eventually you'd really have to plan out your moves in advance.

Also, I'd let the map wrap around for the egg but the balls bounce off the walls.

    Now go get it done.

    Yeah.

    Nah.

I'm experimenting with different ways of the ball moving, some will be easier to dodge than others so there's different levels. I'd then need a "level success" scenario, which presumably would be time based. I definitely agree with your first comment, there is no end other than to get hit. The sole point is to get as high a score as possible.

btw I did my presentation for this game today and had by far the best game in terms of completeness. There were other games with much more complex coding, but the game wasn't complete. I'm glad I kept it simple, I managed to do everything required by the brief and didn't have to sweat it out over the weekend like some did.

Creative industries, we've covered photo editing and now games, next up is web design. I'll have a website with my game on it by the end of the week, then I'll have a diploma or something. I'll get an interview with some company and something to put on my cv.

I'm kinda doing what I can to improve my chances of getting some kind of work-from-home job. Just being able to do this kind of stuff shows technical ability, and creating a functioning game in basically a day shows an ability to learn fast.

One easy to understand method is to guess and check, then refine your guess and repeat until you're satisfied that you're "close enough."

So let's say you want to know the square root of 17.
    1) Guess. Let's guess sqrt(17) ~ 2 (a truly bad guess, as we can see by inspection that 17 > 16 = 4^2, so the sqrt(17)>4)

    2) Divide by our guess, then take the average of our guess and the result.
    17/2 = 8.5

    3) Refine the guess by taking the average of the old guess and the new guess
    (8.5 + 2)/2 = 5.25

Our old guess was 2, our new guess is 5.25. Those are "far apart," so based on the fact that they aren't very close to each other, we go again. In computer speak, we'd say this iteration hasn't converged to within our required tolerance.

Let's keep going until we have achieved a minimum tolerance of 0.01 (just arbitrarily). If the difference between our old guess and our new guess is less than that, we consider our job finished, the square root approximated.

    tol = 0.01

    1) We guess sqrt(17) ~ 5.25
    2) 17/5.25 = 3.238
    3) (3.238 + 5.25)/2 = 4.244
    ABS(5.25 - 4.244) = 1.006 > tol, so keep going

    1) Guess sqrt(17) ~ 4.244
    2) 17/4.244 = 4.006
    3) (4.244 + 4.006)/2 = 4.125
    ABS(4.244 - 4.125) = 0.119 > tol, so keep going

    1) Guess sqrt(17) ~ 4.125
    2) 17/4.125 = 4.123
    3) (4.125 + 4.123)/2 = 4.123
    ABS(4.125 - 4.123) = 0.002 < tol, so stop

    We've approximated SQRT(17) as 4.123.
    Note 4.123^2 = 16.99913

Not bad for 4 iterations, starting from an arbitrary and bad guess, at that.

    ^ Wut.

If you're doing something where you're having to solve a problem numerically rather than analytically, run some simulations to collect a lot of data, tweak the formula, rinse and repeat if needed.

Not sure how any of this helps Ong running his 8k programme though. I would just change the "score" to how long you live.

How long you live is basically the score, that's really easy to code. But you can get a decent score just hiding in the corner, waiting for the ball to go there. If you get bonus points for moving, that takes away the incentive to hide.

That post from mojo does kinda make sense to me, and I think with a clear mind I could probably code something that would approximate sq rt quickly. If I can think of a way to reset the x/y axis then we're getting somewhere.

I once had a neighbour bang on the wall when I was playing nice music at a reasonable volume at a reasonable time. So I played this at high volume...

    NOT SAFE FOR FUCKING WORK

    NOT SAFE FOR FUCKING WORK

That was the last time they complained about my ska.

Ok this guy is next level asshole neighbour, complaining about music is common and understandable, but I like to make my neighbours think "it could be worse". If my neighbour had a problem with black people and was making that opinion clear to me, I'd be playing black music very loud. Reggae and soul for an hour every time he shouts "TRUMP". He'll soon stop.

I'd probably also get in touch with some old friends, arrange a poker game with a few more black people, a couple of whom would be twice the size of a bus. Let's see how big his bollocks are then.

When I was doing a postdoc in PA, I lived in a student apartment building. A young Chinese couple above me had a piano in their apartment. One of them spent a lot of time practising and they were terrible at it. I could hear every off key note. Drove me nuts. I used to bang on the ceiling, but I didn't shout racist stuff or shoot things at them or their dog.

Assuming they were students, it seems odd that they would move to another country, buy or take a piano with them and try to learn it. If they had that much money, you'd think they could afford to rent a house.

Dunno, seems high risk. If he stops, great, but he doesn't sound like the type to back down. Seems a better chance he escalates, and you end up with a gun in your face.

Yeah I kind of take it for granted that I'm not going to have a gun pointed at my face.

Still, I'm not having that. Something has to be done. It's kind of hard to put myself in the mindset of going to war with someone who has a gun, my immediate instinct is to not involve the cops so there's no paper trail, leaving the nuclear option to disappear him. Seems a bit much though for shouting over the fence.

But are you really just going to keep ignoring it? There comes a point where you can't let it continue. If ignoring him emboldens him, if it makes him think you're afraid of him, he'll keep doing it.

Yeah, it's intolerable for sure. The moment he threw something at my dog I probably would have been the one ending up getting shot in the face.

But if I was thinking cooly, I'd get together with the neighbors and start collating evidence. Phone videos, written statements, etc.. Get multiple neighbors documenting the same thing - pretty hard for the cops to ignore. At that point it has to be clear to anyone it's not just you and him who don't get alone for whatever reason and it's the whole neighborhood this guy is harassing. A lot harder to ignore the same complaint coming from multiple neighbors than just from one neighbor.

If they still didn't do anything, I'd call the newspapers. "What are my taxes doing paying their salary if they let this guy terrorise my neighborhood? I'm a law-abiding citizen. I let other people go ahead of me in traffic, help little old ladies cross the street. And I have to put up with this 'cause the cops won't do their job?" etc. etc.

Calling all those people, it becomes an obsession on your part. The 99% of the time he's not shouting over the fence, I don't even want to be thinking about him. Easier said than done, of course, but being in a constant state of correspondence with authorities, that gets tiring, even more so if it's having little effect. He just finds lawful ways to get under your skin. You feel like it's taking over your life. This is why I'd prefer to actually stand up to him, try to nip it in the bud. But yeah, guns complicate matters a lot. It's difficult to intimidate someone with a gun. You have to convince him you really don't give a fuck if you die. That takes away his primary weapon... fear.

I take something else for granted too... I don't have my own family. As a single guy without kids, I don't really fear confrontation and even death quite like someone with kids would. And I'm not afraid of what someone might do to my family. I'm not protecting my family. These factors aren't part of my thinking when I imagine how I deal with this guy. So it's easier for me to stand up to him. I don't have anything to lose. And I'd be sure to let him know that. That's how I'd turn the tables. If he fears prison more than he thinks you fear death, you've won the war.

Your idea assumes you understand how his twisted mind works well enough to manipulate him into being a good neighbor, all the while hoping he doesn't go into Rambo mode. Who knows what mental health issues the guy has? He could have PTSD or be a paranoid schizo. He's obviously not well-adjusted, that's for sure. So trying to outflank him mentally is a big risk.

I think it's a lot easier to deal with a group of sane people (which your other neighbors, the authorities and media generally are) than with one nutcase. You don't have to spend all day every day on the phone. Send one email around with the same attached videos, statements from neighbors, etc. as evidence. cc them all in. Some of them will read it and think it's worth addressing, and that should be enough to get the ball rolling.

I just wanna piss him off with loud reggae. Force black culture down his throat. I'm just spitballing what my plan B is if he points a gun at my face. At that point I'm forced into defending myself, rather than simply standing up for myself.

I mean, I want more barbecues and poker games with my friends. I'm not having that asshole stop me from doing that in my own home. So an escalation is inevitable. At the very least, it's not against the law to shout "TRUMP" over and over again, so all the litigation in the world isn't stopping him from doing that while you're trying to enjoy a few beers and a game of cards with your buddies.

Anyway, off on a tangent, but I literally just had an example of my dumb lack of fear. I hear voices outside. I live in the countryside, this is unusual. I take a look outside and there's an unknown car backed up on the drive. We have some expensive slabs of granite on the drive, heavy as fuck. I go to kitchen to see better what's going on, and there's two guys looking in the outbuilding. I go straight outside, in my slippers, asking them what they're doing. They're looking for their spaniel, apparently they were ferreting. I believe them, it's hard to imagine they were trying to be dodgy when they were making so much noise. Only after when I sit back down do I think I should probably at least put some steel toecap boots on before going out there.

Still, if they saw the granite and thought about coming back for it, they know I'm there, they know I've seen their car, they know I know what they look like. That makes it a much less appealing gig. Some things you just gotta challenge head on.

My point is there's a clever way to stick up for yourself without risking anything. It almost never involves trying to out-asshole someone. You're making it personal and that's the wrong tack imo.

I don't mean to discount your bravery, but if people are mucking about near your house *making a lot of noise* the chances that they're about to do something illegal is pretty remote. But sure, I'd go see what they're doing too just in case. Probably would leave the steel toed boots and pitchfork in the house though.

In fact, I don't think shouting Donald Trump is inherently a racist thing to do.

You're the one who always says people are responsible for their own reactions to others' words. Now here, you're being all woke lol.

lol three posts ago I was talking about wanting to keep the nuclear option of disappearing him.

    How fucking woke of me.

No, shouting "TRUMP" isn't itself a racist thing to do, but if the only reason he's doing it is to annoy black people, then yeah it's pretty racist. Context matters. It's probably not legally racist, but everyone knows he's trying to be racist without actually saying something racist.

btw when we were talking about "words", I was arguing that some words are an act of aggression, it was you telling me that no words exist that can have you respond with violence. I was arguing that I'd defend my gf against racial or medical insults, and I'd feel morally obliged to defend my guests, too. I'm also going to stand up for myself against bullies, and this guy is a bully.

I don't give a fuck about the word "TRUMP". I do give a fuck about my neighbour insulting my black friends. I don't think we need to be on the same political side to agree that this guy is using the word "TRUMP" and a racially motivated insult. This isn't politics. This is one guy being an asshole, and the other guy having to decide how to deal with it.

Just looking at booking a flight to Canada after three years of not being able to go. Flights around £600 which is suprisingly somewhat less than before the pandemic.

Then I looked at rental cars. For two weeks a midsize with no extras will cost me £1200. WTAF. Apparently the rental companies thought the pandemic would never end so they sold off a large number of their cars and now it costs an arm and a leg to rent one. Good thinking there guys.

At what point do you just buy a wreck and drive it into a lake when you're done?
If there are people paying those rates, it's time to open a car rental in Canada.

It's tempting, but a big hassle as I'd need to arrange registration and insurance as a UK driver, so probably not worth it either.

Think I'll leave it for now, won't be going until late August. If the prices are still stupid, well, taking a taxi everywhere would cost less than £1200, so I'll just do that.

What I don't understand is what kind of person was managing the rental companies. "Hmm, we're in lockdown, no-one's renting our cars. They don't really cost us anything just sitting in the stalls there but hey, let's sell them and get some fast cash." Then a year later, "oh, the pandemic ended, people want to rent cars again, and we only have 3 left? Never thought of that. Should we buy back those cars or just jack up the price on the 3 we have left so high no-one will pay it? Hmm..."

These companies should be out of business for being so fucking stupid.

First thing Imma do is drive it to the nearest car rental company and yell at them "hey fuckwits, look who didn't sell off all their vehicles during lockdown. Enjoy bankruptcy, losers!" And then laugh maniacally as I drive my u-haul off their empty lot.
