edit: this lena dunham shit is so retarded btw, and it's not just the right wing -- the idiotic segment of social justice warriors on tumblr are going apeshit because they have no clue what critical thinking is. these people are lobotomies.

my best friend wrote a concise and perfect rebuttal to this nonsense: http://popmitzvah.tumblr.com/post/10...is-lena-dunham

omg guys here's my frands tumblr she says masturbating beside a toddler who you bribed to kiss you wif candy is totes cool

Lena Dunham is a piece of shit for a lot of reasons. Making out with her little sister isn't all that high on the list of shitty shit she's done or shitty shit she stands for.

If a man had come out and said he did the same things to his little sister that Lena Dunham had, then he would have his reputation completely destroyed. His sponsors would abandon him. The NFL would wear a special color all month for child abuse victims just to distance themselves.

it's totally understandable to find her story unsettling, problematic, upsetting, etc.

but to call her a sexual predator and act like she should be blacklisted from the entertainment industry for it is insane. spoon, i'm surprised you would be as silly as the sjw tumblr idiots. sexual awakenings in one's youth are going to be fraught with strange complexities, that's just how it is. to start declaiming her as a child molester is not a productive or sensible conversation about this topic.

i don't think a man should get treatment that's any different. and that's a completely irrelevant point to make. i don't understand what point you're trying to make with that. i mean you're right, men would probably get a different reaction. and? how is that relevant to the conversation we are having about whether lena is receiving fair criticism or not?

whatever your post is incoherent and makes little to no sense -- it consists of: reductive interpretation of my friend's post, saying lena dunham is a piece of shit regardless, random out of left field point about men.

Translation: ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME

Lena Dunham should be blacklisted from the entertainment industry because she sucks that bad at it, not because she got off on making out with a toddler.

    From aubreymcfate's friend's tumblr ramblings:

NONE OF YOU HAVE EVER MASTURBATED NEXT TO SOMEONE IN A BED IN A NON-SEXUAL CONTEXT?
No. We haven't. And to imply that there was no sexual context to Lena Dunham bribing her toddler sister to make out with her, a move she described herself as being something a sexual predator would do, is ridiculous.

I'm curious to know what women think critical thinking consists of at this point.
  10. #15385
actually i have. i had to share a room with my brother when i was like 8 because my room was being redone. i stealthily got myself off and went to sleep. i was in a different bed, but still. it's actually quite common when you're not an only child. doesn't mean literally everyone does it, obviously.

who said there is no sexual content? what are you talking about? the whole point is that sexual exploration in one's childhood can sometimes be weird and inappropriate and uncomfortable, but it's ultimately a normal part of growing up, and different people explore in different ways. of course it's sexual.

it is a lack of critical thinking to just freak out blindly and call her a child molester and not actually explore the nuanced conversation how young children explore and discover their sexuality. to start a hashtag war against her and talk about her as though she's on the level with someone like roman polanski is totally fucking asinine.

you seem to be uncomfortable and weirded out by what she did, and that's fine. your reaction is totally normal, and not what i nor my friend are criticizing.

expert opinion buttresses my point that this is not a clear case of molestation or sexual abuse:

    http://www.salon.com/2014/11/04/chil...t_lena_dunham/

David Finkelhor, director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, has devoted his career to researching child sexual abuse. He’s the author of such titles as “Sexually Victimized Children,” “Childhood Victimization,” “Child Sexual Abuse” and “Nursery Crimes.” I guess you could say he’s an expert on the topic? And this is what he had to tell me in response to claims that Dunham is a sexual abuser: “In the sexual abuse field, we generally do not consider children age 7 as sexual abusers.”

Instead, he explains, “we are concerned about children that age who are ‘sexually reactive,’ meaning sexualized in a developmentally inappropriate way” or “being aggressive toward and exploitive of” their siblings or peers. That’s because that behavior can be “the sign that they themselves has been abused or subjected to developmentally inappropriate material,” he said. As for whether Dunham’s behavior was “sexually reactive,” he says “a judgment would typically require more than a single episode, especially in younger children who may not be aware of norms.” He’s not exactly calling CPS, y’all.

But he’s only the director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, so I decided to talk to some other sources.

Sharon Lamb, author of several research papers on child sexual abuse, including, “‘Normal’ Childhood Sexual Play and Games: Differentiating Play From Abuse,” says of Dunham, “This is really within the norms of childhood sexual behavior,” she says. “Absolutely.” When Lamb, who has provided courtroom psychological evaluations of sexual abuse in children, interviewed therapists for her other book, “Sex, Therapy, and Kids: Addressing Their Concerns Through Talk and Play,” she encountered lots of similar tales.

Lamb, a professor of counseling psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, notes that older siblings are often somewhat coercive of young siblings, and it’s the job of parents to help regulate that behavior. “If an older sibling was making a younger sibling drink a horrible concoction they made while pretending they were playing witches, that would be wrong,” she said. “It would be the same in imposing some kind of sexual play. It wouldn’t be sex offender wrong, it would be inappropriate and coercive and ‘you have to be nicer to your younger sister.’” Lamb notes that Dunham’s pebbles-in-vagina discovery would have been “a good opportunity to teach a little girl that you don’t play with other people’s private parts without their consent.”

also, taking a sensational quote out of context from her blog post like that is so intellectually dishonest.

The only thing I needed to hear about Lena Dunham's book is that she refers to herself as "an unreliable narrator". This could be a penetrative insight into her own experience, in that we're all unreliable narrators with flawed memory, auto-complete perception, and psychological guards to maintain a basic level of happiness. It could also be that she heard GRRM throw the term around and decided it fit nicely on her and so she took it.

As I'm betting it's the latter, it essentially says, "in this nonfiction memoir, I'm gonna be making shit up."

No point trying to piece together an unrecoverable story.
  13. #15388
I don't pay attention to Dunham news, but if people are calling for her head over this, it's from the sexually obsessed, sexually afraid populace. Perhaps Spoon's reaction is that people wouldn't be getting mad about people getting mad at Dunham if she was a guy.

Regardless, I'm pretty on board with hating on a person who is worse at creating plot than Shakespeare and whose characters have about as much depth as a hill and as much maturity as a whoopee cushion

Yeah, I take it back. It's worth the effort if it drives her away.
  16. #15391
Unreliable narrator is a term coined in 1961, and is ubiquitously used in literary analysis. Virtually every first person narrator in fiction is an unreliable narrator. Humbert Humbert from Lolita is one of the best examples of an unreliable narrator -- it's impossible to know who Dolores Haze objectively was.

We are all unreliable narrators. The act of having a consciousness is part documentary and part fiction. We are the protagonists of our own unfolding narratives, and the nature of our perception is shaped by the accrual of every preceding moment and experience.

Also, Lena Dunham doesn't think she's the voice of any generation -- that's a line tailored for her myopic and self-obsessed character.

I agree that the plots in Girls aren't very good, but the dialogue can be pretty brilliant. While I can see why people dislike her (she's never bothered me personally but I don't idolize her in any way either), I think she is super intelligent, and I like the way she brazenly puts herself out there. No one should be forced to take what she's putting out, but it's cool that she's there. Good for her.

I think that's what she says or maybe what she believes, but her show indeed represents the attributes of a generation (and a region). It's a little interesting that she supposedly used that line as tongue-in-cheek, yet the driver of her success is speaking to the generation she isn't supposed to be the voice of. The show has about as narrow appeal as any successful show could have, so when her character tries to be ironic about being the voice of her generation, it's more like it's just naive since she is indeed the voice of her generation. Even the existence of the statement for purpose of irony is fully embedded into the sensibilities of the generation.

The reason I use that phrase derisively against her is that it's true regardless of it being labeled as satire. Also it isn't so much that her show involves so much vapidness that's the problem, but that its foundation is vapidness. Compare a show like Downton Abbey with Girls. They're entirely different on quality of elements despite the fact that they both heavily cater to narrow demographic sensibilities. Downton Abbey is like if you take the idea of a soap opera and elevate its quality; whereas Girls is like if you take Six Feet Under and throw it in the wash with a new red shirt
  27. #15402
Remember what her character says after that? She quickly qualifies her statement with: "well, a generation."

I don't think Lena thinks she is an iconoclast or counter figure of the times. Clearly she speaks the voice of a certain portion of people, namely privileged white girls. And her humor absolutely reflects the self-aware, ironic and neurotic sensibilities of today's youth.

I think her being careful not to refer to herself as such is a means of avoiding being called a self-entitled and self-important white chick that thinks she can speak to the experiences of the disenfranchised. She doesn't tackle issues outside of her own bubble, by her own admission. Which is fine by me.. What she does she does well, and it can be acutely resonant with those who are in that demographic at times. It's one of those markedly "not for everyone" things, and the fact that you guys hate it speak to its powerful and strong sense of self.
  28. #15403
That's a pretty great description of it, actually.

Other than the element problem, the main reason I don't like the show is that I simply don't like the content. Both SFU and Girls are about entitled people, yet the difference is that the characters in Girls think they deserve their entitlement and the characters in SFU either don't understand their entitlement or struggle with problems where their entitlement doesn't exist

Girls is like what you do if you have everything and know nothing. SFU is like what you do when you thought you had everything but realize you don't

I didn't make it past the first sentence.

The comma shouldn't be there (or anywhere in the sentence), so I can't take you seriously.

Wug - I think Girls is intended to be more subjective than SFU.

Imagine if early Claire was the sole protagonist and the show's narrative was filtered through her eyes? Omfg, how insufferable. That's basically Girls, except I think early Claire is such a bratty little bitch that she rivals Hannah.. and beats her.

I also like texts that are kind of unabashed in their portrayal of narcissism and hedonism. Girls feels like I'm in the room with 20-something white liberal arts chicks.

SFU is great, don't get me wrong. But it does have a kind of detachment. Not in a bad way, not like it's failing somewhere it shouldn't be. It's just different.

If you're really just self-hating, then come out of that damn closet and feel better, man. Perpetuating the cycle of self-ignorance and displaced emotion is only going to hold you down.
Okay in all seriousness, I've hated on everything from Ferguson protestors to people who are against pedophilia fairly recently. I'm a classic feminist (which I think should be rebranded to humanism in light of what third-wave feminism has done). This means that I believe in giving people equal rights and equal treatment regardless of whether they are a man, woman, black, white, purple or whatever else.

I'm wondering if I'm getting leveled here. I'm also wondering if any actual women have a problem with anything I've said. I'd bet not.

Oh wow? I didn't know that she did porn. That's crazy. /sarcasm :P

Her ass is ok when she's doing everything she can to stick it out there, but when she stands up straight, her ass is flatter than her chest. I'm very much an ass guy, and I've got standards here.

The rest of her is great though.

Reminds me of some funny [if it wasn't so sad] shit.

So this chick I used to know went to one of those "regression therapy" deals where the chick allegedly tells you what you were like in your previous life/lives. I was under the impression that it was going to be one of those scam type deals where everyone who goes in for it pays their money and gets told they were a princess or some shit (because let's face it, more chicks than dudes are going to fall for this type of shit).

Come to find out, chick told her that she used to be a fucking PLATE in a previous life and that's why she enjoyed serving people so much. A plate. A fucking PLATE. Like a plate that you eat pizza on.

I'm like goddamn, I need to get into this "regression therapy" business.

    Negotiation problems:
party a has agreement with party b for a physical investment. For tax purposes party b puts everything in his wife's name. Wife never has any involvement in decisions and never speaks to party a.

Opportunity arises to exit investment. Party a speaks to party b and they agree to take exit opportunity. Later party b contacts party a and says wife disagrees so can't take said exit opportunity. There will be very little profit as investment did not perform as well as expected.

Party b's true opinion is unknown. He could be using the wife as a negotiating tool, similar to nations sending negotiation parties with set limits.

How should party a proceed, he wants to exit. But can't negotiate with true partner.

Party A is at fault for allowing the bold which has led to his powerlessness in the situation. One try is to subtly threaten Party B's reputation as someone who is controlled by his wife. This would expose the true opinion of Party B if performed well.

Party A is at a major disadvantage because of a mistake that was made, and there's nothing wrong with that, but if Party A wants to try to regain equality in negotiations, then he's going to have to get Party B to make a mistake.

I was thinking party a says his wife won't agree with the new suggestion (party b isn't just saying no, they have a different proposal).

This gives some level of parity. I would be hoping that party b would then say "but she has nothing to do with this" at who h point party a can say "well in that case neither do you so perhaps I should be speaking to your wife directly, thereby removing the advantage party b has of effectively sending a negotiating intermediary.

That's the best I can come up with but I'm open to suggestions.

It looks like Artie Lange fucked up: http://www.buzzfeed.com/lindseyadler...ipped-as-abusi

Aside from the jokes not really being funny, I think his main mistake was appearing weak within the context of the jokes that he was trying to get over. Examples:

    • "I want the Chick on First Take to laugh at my white dick!"
    • "Here's the scenario I'm using to jerkoff to chick on First Take I'm T. Jefferson & she's my slave. She beats the shit out of me & runs free"
    • "I attempt to whip @CariChampion cuz she disrespected the Jefferson Plantation but she grabs whip & beats me I cum like a fat founding father"

Self-depreciating humor does not work if you are putting yourself below the woman that you're talking about wanting to bone. The PC, white-knight, social justice fucktard brigade is jumping on his weakness, not what he actually said.

I'm going to attempt to roleplay here as Artie Lange and try to put myself into his shoes and play the tweets joke situation better than he did. I'm also going to try to incorporate the same elements that have provoked claims of sexism and racism. Here goes:

    • Cari Champion isn't bad considering she's pushing 40 and is a woman on ESPN.
    • She's pretty smart for a chick. And a Republican! Maybe she's Andrew Jackson's great-great-great-great-great-great granddaughter?
    • I'm sorry Miss Jackson, I am for reaaaaaaaal trying to masturbate to First Take but they keep showing old white guys.
    • I'm not for reparations but I'd totally look past her big-ass forehead if she can hook me up with some grits and biscuits.
    • I'm not usually into black chicks, but I'm really feeling some affirmative action in my pants watching her pretty, cocoa-buttered-up ass.

Then he should have followed this up by posting a picture of Kelly Rowland with a caption like, "Daaaaamn @CariChampion got it going on!"

I think it's a fun situation that he's gotten himself into that really shows how you have to play the political game differently with your career than even just 10 years ago.

Yeah our heads are both in the same place. I think the focus has to be on achieving equality (aka overcoming the disadvantage) before anything else.

    Hey fuck Amanda Hess. http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-med...lcome-internet

She's done exhaustive reporting on the failures of law enforcement at all levels to comprehend, let alone address, the emotional, professional, and financial toll of misogynistic online intimidation. She’s called local police, 911, and the FBI on a number of occasions when she feared for her safety IRL; law enforcement officials have recommended to her and other women that they stop wasting time on social media.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Goddamn, the cops got one right.

My problem with Amanda Hess and other idiots like her are that they profit from trying to convince people to be victims. People like this have made it fashionable for the first option in every situation to be playing the victim.

Someone on the Internet told me he was going to cut my head off and skull fuck me. My reaction? To laugh at the dumb bastard. What would her reaction be? To demand a full-scale investigation wasting tens of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money. And she would encourage others to do the same.

This type of pussification (of both men and women) is a goddamn shame.

Calling one woman a dumb cunt isn't misogyny, but Amanda Hess and her type have pounded their misogyny drums so fucking long that people have actually started to believing it. It's this same type of idiot who has completely bastardized feminism. Here's a typical Amanda Hess story:

    1. I'm a woman.
    2. Something happened that hurt my feelings.
    3. That thing should never happen again because patriachy.

In the words of Denis Leary, "Life sucks. Get a fucking helmet."

hmm.. i agree with you to a point, but put yourself in a woman's shoes for a moment and imagine that, because you said something guys didn't like, you got inundated with thousands of really scary rape and death threats. that happens to women a lot online. in an age where crazy but tech-savvy people can find out where you live (doxxing and all that) and there are men who actually hate women that much, wouldn't that freak you out, even just a little? i recall reading some of the threats these women would receive in various similar cases and the men making these horrifying threats actually possessed real info of where these women lived. that brings it out of the abstract realm of "omg someone was mean to me online" to holy shit, one or two of these fuckers might really be that crazy, and actually knows how to find me.

i'm just talking about actual physical threats on your person btw, not just insults and things like that. those guys are an unfortunately very vocal minority of pathetic losers and are best ignored, no need for police action on simple name-calling.

edit: also what the cops said makes no sense. this isn't an issue of social media, like just get off facebook or something. these women are bloggers, writers, public figures of various sorts... just like anyone else... the internet is the platform for news, opinions, etc. to say get off social media just means shut up and don't speak your opinions like your male counterparts can without receiving rape/death threats that seem all too real. it trivializes what these women are doing, makes it sound like they're just getting into comment wars on FB or something.

I don't have to put myself in a woman's shoes because men and women are equal. Right? Right? It happens to men a lot online too (along with doxing), and it's usually from women. Of course it would freak me out, but that wouldn't mean I deserve special treatment from law enforcement, and neither does she.

Let's take this back to that idiot Anita Sarkeesian. She exploited this dynamic by faking death threats against herself and then asking for donations from charity off of the back of the publicity that she got from the fake death threats. Then she repeated this process again with the Utah State University situation, and she was rewarded once again even after officials cast all kinds of doubts on the validity of her death threat claims.

Due to affirmative action and Title IX, I have to include some hating on men here to fill a quota:

Hey fuck Kanye West. This idiot and his stupid skirt bullshit is just another part of thinking it's cool to feminize the fuck out of dudes. He's the same dude who was one of the first ones really pushing the skinny jean bullshit, and next thing you know he's going to show up somewhere in full fucking drag trying to act like this shit is what's hot.

You know what man, if you want to be a crossdresser, then just be a crossdresser. Who gives a fuck if you're a crossdresser? I've seen some hot ass crossdressers that I would fuck the dog shit out of. But trying to pass this shit off as what's cool and masculine and whatever and expecting people to take you seriously while crossdressing and saying you're not a crossdresser is some bullshit. He thinks because he wifed up a busted white girl who comes from a whole clan of gold digging tramps that he's some hot shit.

If you want to know where this shit really comes from, it comes from racism and sexism. What happens is you have these racist ass white people who are afraid of strong black men, then you have these sexist ass women who are afraid of strong men in general, and so then these dudes figure out that the more they pussy themselves out that the more white people accept them. Name a black actor who they haven't put in a dress or at least tried to put in a dress. Eddie Murphy (succeeded), Martin Lawrence (succeeded), Dave Chappelle (tried and failed).

Then Tyler Perry put the pussying yourself up shit in a chokehold and ran with it doing the same goddamn movie every time with a different name. A lot of people hate on Tyler Perry, but I've got to give him that because he took some bullshit and made it work for him by taking advantage of the tendencies these racist, sexist-ass privileged dumbshits who can't handle a strong male role model being out there.

If a guy was receiving similar threats I would think he has the right to go to the police too.

You're strawmanning me with the "men and women are equal" thing. I don't know when I've ever used that as an argument. Of course I think they should be treated equally, as do you, but we are not equal, or should I say the same, in many ways. (I don't like connotations of the word equal when talking about difference between men and women). One of those ways is the way we experience day to day life in our society.

Women who say things that men don't like online are more likely to receive really scary threats with indication that those men might actually know where they live. Could men be subject to the same thing? Sure, of course. It's more likely with women though. It doesn't mean either gender deserves special treatment. Every individual case should be taken seriously on its own merit. The conversation here is about larger patterns, not that women should be more valued than men.

Let's do a flipside example with men. Men who act and/or dress feminine are extremely vulnerable to hate crimes. Men who offend other men's expectations of masculinity are more prone to being victims of abuse. With the exception of super-masculine butch lesbians, women who are tomboyish to varying degrees largely go unnoticed. I'm sure they get some level of abuse too, but men who subvert their gender roles seem to get a lot more shit on the whole by society.

Our experiences are not equal. Race, gender, disabilities or lackethereof, etc - These things shape the way we interact with the world around us, and how the world interacts with us. So yes, actually, you do need to put yourselves in the shoes of someone who is different than you. It's called empathy.

The point isn't about "special treatment" for one gender. That's a ridiculous notion and I disagree with it wholly. The point is that we should take seriously this attitude that a woman should just shut up and stop talking online and not worry if she gets really scary and serious sounding death/rape threats by people who've shown evidence that they know where they live.

I mean, how is that not a reason to go to the police? If my older brother got a death threat from someone online who gave any indication that he knew where he lived, I'd urge him to go to the police too. That's the most sane reason to go to the police, lol.
