Fair point. But people over 40 should know better, especially if they live in the US. So being ignorant isn't really excusable for MK. Still don't think she was trying to be racist, or that she should be fired for it.

I thought the blackface actors were among the loudest voices calling for the end of segregation in theater.
By the standards of the day, they were the SJW's.

It's funny how those people become the icon of racism a few decades later.

I'm not arguing that wearing blackface on Halloween will be seen as anything but racist, here. It's stupid to jump at shadows and claim that any portrayal of a black person by a white person is racist, though.

MK's biggest mistake is coming back at this with insecurity. American media loves nothing more than to pounce on insecurity.
If she'd said, "I came from a small town in BFE Southern USA, where people wore blackface on Halloween and it was not considered racist. Times change. That doesn't happen there anymore. In other news..." she'd probably be fine.

I've been to backwoods Illinois. My hypothetical is still plausible, IMO.

It doesn't matter. Replace that story with anything that owns her statement and doesn't express insecurity and she's probably fine.

It's the same bully tactic. They try to make fun of you for something, and if you deny it or act embarrassed, then game on. Better to just own it.
I mean... if you do something stupid, then apologize, sure, but if all you said was, "back then things were different." then there's nothing to back-pedal.

She could even take the angle, "Wow. It's something that I accepted as a child, and never really thought about since then. My statement that it was accepted is a reflection of my childhood naievity (sp?), and it probably was considered racist back then, but I wasn't aware of racism at that time." and be fine with it.
  7. #26332
Maybe, but I suspect once she said it the gloves were off. You can get away with that kinda thing on Fox, but this was on NBC.

Also, apparently not the first time she said something suspect. I forgot about 'Santa and Jesus were white' stuff lol.

    lol.
    Skinny, white Jesus.
    Gimme a break.

He was widely popular and not an ascetic. He may not have been a rotund guy, we'll probably never know, but the depictions of him as emaciated are so silly.
  9. #26334
Anyone who can feed 5000 people with a bit of bread and some fish is probably a fat bastard. I don't doubt he could turn a stone into a big mac by clicking his finger.

Jesus was Palestinian, wasn't he? Fucker wasn't white. Probably skinny though after his 40 days and 40 nights of fasting.

I don't think it's 'ok' because of the connotations that go with it. It's kinda like it's not ok for a straight person to dress up like a flaming homosexual on Hallowe'en and act all camp.

Whether those behaviors break the boundary of being 'racist' or 'homophobic' or not in MY mind is irrelevant, because I'm not the one who sets the norms in society. They're not something I would do because it's in bad taste and could be viewed as offensive by today's norms. Neither of those costumes would particularly offend me personally, but I would think the person doing them was ignorant and a bit of a social dipshit.
  13. #26338

    Who do you suppose is?

...a bit of a social dipshit.
Depends how funny it was. Dan Negreanu does Scotty Nguyen and everyone high fives him. Dan Degreanu does Dexter and people say he's a racist. Not really sure what the difference is. People are automatically outraged at the idea of someone blacking up, regardless of the context, but that standard doesn't apply across the board.

Interesting question. I assume it works by general social consensus. Not to be glib, but it seems kind of like fashion that way: who decides how long people's hair should be, or what clothes are in style? Dunno. Things just change.

Not that I lose sleep over this like you seem to, but he was imitating a specific person, not making fun of his race.

    blackface = bad taste.

Afaik, Dexter was some character he just made up, not a real person. At least I don't know any person he's actually referring to named Dexter. So, it looked like he was doing a stereotype of a black Jamacian man. I guess that's maybe what got some people upset.

Back when I played online poker, I got some apparently serious criticism over my name being offensive to Caribbean people.
I never took it to heart, because if you hear/see the word mojo and automatically cry racism, then that's all you.
It got pretty funny once. The guy was accusing me of drinking raw chicken blood, and I was all, "So I'm the racist, here?"

Poop summed this issue up perfectly

I missed that post of poop's. Or maybe I just read it while I was smoking and forgot.

Actually I never heard anyone making a big deal out of it until you did.
I first saw it on Doug Polk's channel, and he thought it was in bad taste. I then watched it and read the comments, and lots of people said the r-word in caps.

    blackface = bad taste.
Then it's you who's racist. Why is it bad taste? Don't you like the look of black people? Don't you think they should be treated the same as Vietnamese people when it comes to matters of equality?

So, it looked like he was doing a stereotype of a black Jamacian man. I guess that's maybe what got some people upset.
There's a world of difference between stereotype and negative stereotype. Saying "ting" instead of "thing" while rolling a spliff isn't a negative stereotype, it's observation rather than mockery. That would be like, idk, a man wearing a dress and makeup, and speaking in a high pitched voice about curtains and cushions.

Are you being this retarded on purpose? Go to the link I posted above about the history of blackface. That pretty much sums up why it's offensive.

Where did I say anything about Vietnamese? Was DN using yellowface in that clip? No, he was imitating and making harmless fun of someone who happens to be Vietnamese. Big difference.

I mean ultimately I don't really care but I don't get why he'd do this in the first place. Is it funny? I don't get why it'd be funny.
  27. #26352
    Scotty was funnier.

Was DN using yellowface in that clip?
Oh, so it only matters if there is facial makeup? Had he used yellowface, would that then be offensive?

I think Dexter is mildly amusing, but largely because he's trying to have a spliff with an elderly white woman who he calls "Mama", and is annoyed at having do to an interview about poker. The accent is also mildly amusing because for a white Canadian dipshit, he nails it.

Imagine DN had done his SN impression not by donning a wig and sunglasses, but by putting on yellow face paint, having false buck teeth and thick glasses and one of those pointy Viet peasant hats. That would change it from making fun of a person's mannerisms (which he did) to making fun of his entire race (which he didn't).
  30. #26355
So how does blackface mock an entire race? There was no negative stereotype, like a big pointy nose for a Jew.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Dexter is a character based on a Rasta that Dan is friends with. I find it easy to believe Dan hangs out with Rastas and smokes spliffs with them. It's easy to see from Dexter that he has spent time with Jamaicans. I wouldn't call such a person a racist.

IOW, you can't seriously expect someone to become an expert on a topic just so they can try to inform someone else who's too lazy to learn about it themselves.

I listen to what others say and come to my own conclusions. This is better imo than not bothering to listen at all and just continuing to ask the same question over and over, after someone's provided you with a source that answers that question.

In this case, I read the link myself first, thought it explained the issue fairly clearly, and then posted it specifically for your benefit. Sorry if that wasn't enough for you.

Then I don't know how to help you. I could copy and paste the words from the link for you if you like, but it seems pretty easy to me for you to just click the link and read what it says. Of course that assumes you actually are interested in learning about it, which seems unlikely tbh.

Do not try to contact me or find me, it is impossible, since I sent you an email from your account.

Through your email, I uploaded malicious code to your Operation System.
I saved all of your contacts with friends, colleagues, relatives and a complete history of visits to the Internet resources.
Also I installed a Trojan on your device and long tome spying for you.

But I was struck by the sites of intimate content that you often visit.

I am in shock of your fantasies! I've never seen anything like this!

So, when you had fun on piquant sites (you know what I mean!)
I made screenshot with using my program from your camera of yours device.
After that, I combined them to the content of the currently viewed site.

There will be laughter when I send these photos to your contacts!
BUT I'm sure you don't want it.

Therefore, I expect payment from you for my silence.
I think $861 is an acceptable price for it!

    Pay with Bitcoin.
    My BTC wallet: 1JTtwbvmM7ymByxPYCByVYCwasjH49J3Vj

If you do not know how to do this - enter into Google "how to transfer money to a bitcoin wallet". It is not difficult.
After receiving the specified amount, all your data will be immediately destroyed automatically. My virus will also remove itself from your operating system.

My Trojan have auto alert, after this email is read, I will be know it!

I give you 2 days (48 hours) to make a payment.
If this does not happen - all your contacts will get crazy shots from your dark secret life!
And so that you do not obstruct, your device will be blocked (also after 48 hours)

    Do not be silly!
Police or friends won't help you for sure ...

p.s. I can give you advice for the future. Do not enter your passwords on unsafe sites.

    I hope for your prudence.

    https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Blackface

Mainly a US breakdown of the subject. You know, history and stuff.

The pic I posted in the previous post is of a Zwarte Piet, or Black Pete if you may. That is from a different culture and a whole different backstory, and is also getting under fire recently.

Blackface is a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified coon".

Which is the difference we have been trying to explain to you. Scotty Nguyen has his very specific mannerisms which everyone knows about, baby. It's not a "random vietnamese guy things" but rather a "Scotty Nguyen thing" which Negreanu made fun of

Dexter on the other hand no one knows about, except one can see is just a collection of Jamaican stereotypes. You can't say it's an individual because you literally have no idea. You can say, however, it's just a collection of Jamaican stereotypes and Negreanu had to put on blackface to do it.

Not Jamaican stereotypes, Rastafarian stereotypes. There is a difference, don't be ignorant.

Fucking clocks go back, everyone except me has an extra hour in bed. Me, I just get up normally at what I think is 8 o'clock, look at the time on my computer an hour later and it's 7.50, and think "wtf".

Stereotype is a dirty word when it shouldn't be. NEGATIVE stereotype is racism. But it's funny you talk about any stereotype being offensive, since you're happy to put all Trump supporters in the same box. Well, actually that's a little unfair on Jack, that's more Oskar's doing, but I'm in no doubt that everyone here is guilty of stereotyping, sometimes negative stereotyping like assuming this "bomber" guy is representative of the average Trump supporter. That's a worse stereotype than blackface ting. I mean nearly all Jamaican Rastas are black and say ting. I say nearly all, but there's this guy...

I wonder if reggae will become like hiphop, where white people have to not say the n-word when they're singing along, except the n-word is the t-word... ting.

Who posted the image of him with all the Trump stickers on his van? All nice and new, I might add, after a Florida summer.

I mean it's not just the "bomber" guy, it's banana, too. How many times have you all put him in the average Trump supporter box?

My "too early for this" comment is me not wanting to go through old posts to see who said what and then be all "gotcha". We all stereotype, it's a natural thing for people to do.

Blackface ting is not an insult to the Rastafari, it's not a negative stereotype. What is an insult to them is Rastafari has a red line underneath it as if it's not a real word, but Rastafarian does not.

There is difference. Rastafarians don't talk like that necessarily; Jamaicans do, however. Don't be ignorant?

Here's my theory on that: Those are new stickers.
Here's my alternative theory: Those are UV safe prints as you would usually order for outdoor use.

    What you got?

I seem to recall some guy rambling about how that van didn't have any stickers on until recently. I mean honestly, I find rambling internet people equally as compelling as the media.

I heard another rambling internet guy say there were photos of that van taken in April on someone's twitter.

I find one random internet person just as compelling as another, even more so if the latter is on r/thedonald talking about conspiracies by the Deep State.

Another plant by the lizard state. I know Ong won't click it so I'll summarise it for him:

Picture of allegedly crazy alleged Trumptard guy's alleged van taken on Nov. 1, 2017.

Pics found of the FBI driving the guy's newly-stickered van to his house so they could arrest him. Of course they don't identify themselves as FBI.

Yes that's high up in my "things to do" list. Well, maybe not quite so specifically, but definitely visit Japan.

I hear it's a little rough for Americans in Japan. Is it the same in the countryside as in the cities? Or do you get the typical small town vibe of putting a high value on hospitality that like, every region of the world thinks they've got more than everywhere else?

E.g. Ask someone from the American south and they'll tell you southern hospitality is top notch. Ask someone from Kansas, they'll tell you that midwest hospitality is top notch. Ask someone from Maine, same story. Ask someone from another country... same story. People in small towns think they invented hospitality, and it's yet to catch on.

Whatever... is it also like that in Japan? I've only ever talked to people whom have visited a major city.
