Anyone here with kids send them to a private school? I'm considering sending my 3 year old to a private school as of January. She's only just turned 3 and already smarter than all the 4 year olds in her preschool and the teachers there said she can already do everything that they need to teach the kids there before they start full time primary school in two years time. Gonna cost me a fortune so would like to here anyone else's experience.

My wife went to a private school up until like grade 8 or 9 I think. She said from her experience the private school taught better discipline and it challenged them more. When she went to a public school in grade 8 (her parent allowed her to make this choice) the two big things she noticed was how the work they were given was way easier and that kids kids would disrespect the teacher with no consequences. The public schools in our town are not bad schools at all either, but they couldn't compare to the private schools.

If you know a good private school, it is better and worth it. Some are not good, but they're probably the minority and are that way for uniquely religious reasons. My niece went to one of those and they didn't teach her shit about shit except Jesus. She has since been behind public school standards |

My impression is that it's been shown over and over and over and over that preschool causes no improvement in anything whatsoever.

This ties in with my expectations. My initial concerns are whether or not it's worth it at such a young age or whether I should save my money and just consider it for high school. But at the same time, if I have a particularly bright child, am I wasting that potential by not grabbing every potential opportunity.

We spend a lot of time with our kids and have basically structured our entire lives around them. Not to the detriment of ourselves, but we certainly aren't the kind to just switch on the TV. We had a relatively poor 5 years with the Mrs not working. So now the youngest is 3 we put her into preschool 3 days per week for 6 hours per day. She needs it and loves it. But the thought process is if we are sending her somewhere for that amount of time each week, should we spunk a fortune on a private education in an attempt to ensure she has the best possible future or is it just a waste of money that will have little overall effect.

I doubt private preschool is any better than public. Parents who are wise with their money provide a lot of value to their kids. I wouldn't splurge that much on preschool unless the one my kid was in was awful. |

What is the school offering that you aren't? Could you offer it for less than the price the school is asking?

Only reason I'd send my kids to private school is to keep them away from the riff raff. I doubt there's a great deal of riff raff in Cornwall. I'm not sure what's to be gained from it. I'd be more inclined to pay for kids' uni rather than private school.

I went to an elite private school age 10-12, then we moved and I ended up in one of the bottom of the pile government learning facilities. I haven't kept in touch with any of my friends from the private school. 15 years later I get an invitation for a class reunion from a 27 year old looking 45 who was now a party member of the religious right. One of my old classmates went on to an executive position in germany. Got addicted to coke, went to rehab and eventually killed himself. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but I am not bitter about my substandard education. I think there is a life lesson you learn in public schools that can be very valuable.

The private school decision really depends on how bad the public schools are around you. The american public education system seems so bad that anyone with a bit of money snap ships their kids to a private school.

The value of my education significantly jumped once I got into algebra in 8th grade and continued to pay dividends through AP classes til grade 12, and into my engineering classes through my Junior year. Then I had to take a bunch of worthless crap to satisfy the degree and it's been downhill since then.

Orwell wrote a paper about being over-worked and over-challenged when he was young because he was a prodigy and his school only brought him on to bank on the claim of another scholar going to XYZ top school, coming from their school. They kept his nose on the grind stone constantly. He was to the point where he intended to do no hard work for many years after he graduated.

what are the public infant/junior/senior schools like round you. went through the process last year with my daughter . local school in town is really good and there were local village schools to choose from as well.town school was out of area.....bummer .... but son goes there already so that got us up the priority list and hes near the top of his year so probably also helps with schools looking for good sats results further down the line. There was a new redrow development on the edge of local town , and the houses were sold before being built and moved into as soon as they were completed as it got owners into the catchment area for getting kids into the good infant school. 86 kids went after 50 places apparently. local town also has a grammar school ( i went there and its pretty top notch and nephew and neice go there) and two high schools(catholic decent one and one for the dropouts). that 8K per year may be better invested in getting into a good school catchment area throughout the kids education. We plumped for the town school as number 1 pick as it had a great reputation, plenty of kids so 2 classes per year compared to village schools which were typically two years per class. didn't think that was conducise to pushing the kids and they were abit wishy washy about pushing the kids. number of kids at the town school meant that they could be streamed and are being pushed. downside is that its on the edge of a council estate so all the dropouts go there as well but school is getting the results despite that. |

So everytime my work co-hosts an event, we offer to develop the HTML version of the invitation email, because apparently I'm the only person capable of such magic. Every time I send the draft to our sales guy, he says, "Looks good, can you create a Word version so I can send it to the client?"

I realize I just gave two different wordings of the same complaint, neither of which is the exact wording that I sent in the email to the sales guy, but I just keep finding new permutations of absurdity that niggle at me.
