This really disturbs me. However, I'm way more bothered by the lie than the lack of prosecution. I knew this sort of shit existed but when I hear stories about false prosecution, it really gets to me.

I've said for a long time that my biggest fear is receiving a long jail sentencing while being 100% innocent. Throw in the idea that the false sentencing can be a result of a false accusation...

Abuse is: being falsely accused of abuse.
  9. #8034
Not only is that United States, but Washington. Few societies in the history of the world have been as good at false imprisonment as the US. Nobody knows the specific numbers, but double digits of people in prison are innocent. And the potential to be innocent and in prison are extreeeeemely high, in some ways, 70+% high. An example is in some recent research showing that lengthy yet standard interrogation methods induce false confessions on the order of around 3/4ths of the time

Several years ago I watched a docu (don't remember the name) of a huge child molestation "ring" in California that convicted about two dozen parents, they spent a total of over a hundred hours in prison, two died in prison, but all have since been exonerated. The cops "merely" forced confessions from their kids, and one of the kids (an adult now) still believes he was molested by his father, even though it has been proven that he never was.

The primary reason humans appear smarter than monkeys is because we have vocal chords and are able to develop symbolic understanding and communication of language. The power of punishment and imprisonment in our hands is the embodiment of evil

I saw this film too. In another, I will never get the scene out of my head where the investigators are grinding a young man for hours, until he falsely confesses to murdering his sister.

This was internet explorer's response to being too permissive, and allowing many viruses to be propagated through web pages. You should just be able to click on the yellow and "allow blocked content"
  19. #8044
oh yeah I should make it clear that it doesn't actually stop from me downloading, I can click a little button to the far right of the yellow line and choose "download file", (although the yellow bar loaded with the page and so was easy for me to overlook at first and causes the download button on-page to simply do nothing rather than further highlight why/that downloads have been blocked).

i bet good manies that technical people wrote it initially, and then pr-type people rewrote it to make sense to a wider audience as more people are familiar with the term download or some shit.

Already the case in the south of Netherlands, three more provinces as of May the 1st and the rest of the Netherlands (Amsterdam in this group) as of Janary 1st, 2013. Although last year they were claiming it'd be banned everywhere by the 1st of this year, so there's still some vague hope.

As someone living in Rotterdam, I bet it makes me sadder!

This actually seems good for me as a potential traveler. The Netherlands seems like an awesome destination, but I could see being put off by the throngs of frat boys and potheads making the pilgrimage. If traveling to The Netherlands, I'd rather enjoy dutch culture than marijuana culture.

But besides my potential enjoyment of travel, I think prohibition in most forms is bad, and the only reason this is needed is because prohibition being the norm everywhere else. What I mean is, if everywhere was like The Netherlands, no one would feel particularly compelled to make a pot pilgrimage to The Netherlands.

    From youtube:

This is not all true! wtf people just calm down! Law doesn't do anything to "1gram buyers". Govt trying to control those tourists who are actually transporting large amounts. No one asking your passport at cafeshops in Netherland do they? You just smoke ur pot and be a decent person you will be ok! Stop believing every word that are told on media-press even the TYT manipulating their reports very often. People who are already booked their flight to Holland: Just have fun and no worries!
Calm down people. ( FWIW, I'm local myself if I ever go there )

Going for the quad post! Although for sure a valid concerne, I didn't find this to be a problem at all. I found the same same level of annoying (drunken rather than stoned) frat-boyish people in amsterdam as in any other european city I've backpacked in, although I guess that fraytboys probably appear at one particular time of year.
    All the dutc
h people were ridiculously tourist-friendly too (every time I stopped with a map out - often - someone was offering to help) so I didn't feel at all like the locals were sick and tired of stoned tourists, but maybe I ran really hot or something.

Yeah if I were a middle aged Christian looking to travel to Europe's most beautiful cities, I'd be put off going to Amsterdam by long haired smelly stoners, and not by the gangs of drunken idiots out on stag dos shouting and nailing whores.

They should try banning the tourists from getting drunk in public if they want a better image. Fuck's sake, another example of ridiculous double standards in society when it comes to drugs. Come and drink our wonderful beer, brewed locally, and act like a fucking twat. But don't come here and smoke our locally grown weed, we don't want you thinking life is great and being nice to everyone.

Spain and Portugal will change their law soon, they need money and weed tourism is big bucks.

My first thought is that Holland doesn't actually want tourism (can't tell you if they do or not, though)

For many reasons, countries with strong social systems are better off being protectionist with this sorta thing
  49. #8074
I just don't see why they think pot tourism is a problem but not whore tourism. Maybe I'm missing 90% of the facts, maybe they don't want foreigners banging their whores and getting drunk on their streets either, in which case fair enough.

afaik it's just cos the right-wingers are in power in the actual government, the amsterdam city side of things for example seems to think it's dumb. That's what I've heard, but not from anywhere reliable so grain of salt etc.
  51. #8076
I'd like to retract my comment. There are some potentially interesting places to travel which are all but ruined and overrun by tourists. This probably wouldn't be the case in The Netherlands, anti-weed laws or not. My vacation wouldn't be ruined by the smell of weed in the air. This new law is stupid. Fuck the man.

At least in the US, we have excuses. Our election and governing system is shit, we cover vast land and diversity, and are the primary outlet of moneyed interests. We have an excuse for having enough voters who want silly anti-pot laws. But in Holland, they ain't got none of this shit, yet they STILL have enough simpletons to push these sort of laws? Blows my mind

Jared Diamond's theory of inequality couldn't be more true. It's not the intelligence or the craftiness of the people that make some better than others, it's the geography and circumstances of the societies that make some reap benefits more effectively than others

    The guy is a buffoon!

He has a knack of getting shit players to perform ok. That's it. That is not what we need. What we need is someone who can get a bunch of middle to good plus a couple of great players galvanised into a team capable of performing together at the highest level in a short space of time.

Roberto Di Mateo springs to mind, fuck being English. Also the press will demonise him to the point where anything short of winning the dam thing will have him seen as a complete failure. Maybe that's why they gave him the job. They new the Euro's were gonna be a disaster for us so gave the press a sacrificial goat.
I'm the king of bongo, baby I'm the king of bongo bong.
  62. #8087
You might be right about Hodgson, Dan. His success has come at clubs and nations where he has been expected to get the best out of average players, while the one job where he's had big names he failed. Thus, I think our best shot this summer is if Roy picks the more average players at his disposal and gets rid of the egos he'll struggle to manage such as Terry and Cole. I realise Cole is the best attacking full back we have, but will he put the shift in for Hodgson? I doubt it. Leighton Baines is nearly as good as Cole but will be easier for a man like Hodgson to manage.

Fuck the press, semis is the target for us this year. If he gets us that far, then that's fingers up to the doubters. We're not good enough to win the tournament with any manager, not unless we get very lucky. Germany, Holland and Spain are so far ahead of us, the semis is the best we can reasonably hope for.

Di Matteo? Do me a favour. What was his record at West Brom? Not as impressive as Hodgson's. Di Matteo has done excellent at Chelsea, but so did Avram Grant, would he make an acceptable England manager? Di Matteo needs success in England before he becomes a serious contender imo, turning Chelsea around in half a season with a team he didn't build is not success, it's merely very impressive, he needs a title first. Hodgson has eight titles, his first with a team favourite for relegation, and has national team experience with three nations, doing very well indeed with two of them. He's more qualified for the job.

I'm not anti-foreigner, I'd be happy to see Wenger or Mourinho get the job because they have proved themselves in this country. Di Matteo is proving himself right now, and thus is certainly a potential candidate for the future, but not yet.

I'd have kicked up a stink if Sam Allardyce got the job.

Nah I'm a realist, and the Spanish are currently much better than us, it's not close. We're on a par with the French. If you wanna troll me, tell me French football is far superior to English football, that might provoke swears.

Just do what lots of Man Utd fans are already doing... start supporting Man City now so you can say you supported them before they won the title.
