Just realized that not all towns have things like sprouts and costco, and that South Parks' commentary applied to my home.

Kinda grunching on the knives thing-- Dull knives are more dangerous because a dull knife causes the user to want to push to overcome the added resistance (often this is the only option to make the cut with a dull knife) and this is inherently unstable as the pivot point of the knife is at the edge of the blade and the force is being applied several inches up at the handle. It's like trying to ride a bike through a foot of heavy mud-- it requires more force, yet the gyroscopic effects created by application of force are mitigated by the drag of the mud. Generally the appropriate motion is a slicing motion, which has the user pushing or pulling the knife with very little to no downward force being applied.

I have five knives that I keep out. Two are cheap bin knives from the cutlery store, a basic pairing knife and a bread knife. The other three: Misono UX10 Sujihiki, Mighty Mac 6" Santoku, and a Japanese brand (only markings are in Japanese) 4.5" Petty Pairing.

The UX10 is by far my favorite. A lot of people aren't familiar with Japanese slicers, but they are an amazing knife. The UX10 and the Santoku are pretty much versions of a traditional French chef's knife which have been specialized to opposite ends of the spectrum. So I need an extra knife, but with the two knives I'm able to do everything a chef's knife is typically used for much better. With these five I rarely feel the need to pull out anything else.

    You think that?!
It's pretty sad for you alpha males if you consider diplomacy a feminine property.
It's harder to sustain a leadership role without it.

Do you honestly think that comparing me to a woman is an insult to me?
    After all this time?

Do you think you know me at all?
    I kinda don't.

Maybe your diplomacy doesn't constitute a feminine trait in you, however, your easily bunched panties...

I mean, I'm perfectly happy with who I am and you're still failing at insulting me.
    Try harder.

I bet you would actually be insulting if you didn't assume other people share your value system. But then, I don't respect the greater talking points of your value system, so it'd be hard for you (in particular) to break through that barrier and actually insult me.

According to Google, uptalk is basically the Scottish accent.
    Amirit?

I uptalk when I'm incredulous, mostly. That emotion doesn't get much mileage with me, so I wouldn't say I uptalk a lot.

EDIT: Man, our language is so inflected that I'm sure I uptalk more often than I said. I use inflection to ask questions all the time when I'm teaching physics labs. It's a good way to lead someone who's confused to the answer they need without outright telling them. I can imply the answer with my inflection, so the student has more confidence to say the correct thing. Ultimately, delivering confidence is my goal. The knowledge will fade over time, but the confidence to pursue the scientific process will remain.

    I hope.

There's only been 2 days of class so far, so only the first demos have gone out.

I described them in another thread.

I have my new-hire orientation tomorrow, which will last the entire day.

The demos for tomorrow are mostly the same thing. The professors talk about these introductory concepts for the first few lectures.

There's a thing called an electrophorus which I hadn't heard of before, but which is easy to understand. It's basically half a capacitor.

A capacitor is just 2 conductive surfaces which are facing each other, and not touching. For practical applications, an insulator (usually called a dielectric, but same thing) is in between the plates. The use of the insulator has multiple advantages which I don't need to get into now. The electrophorus is just a single conductive plate and the insulator is a large, horizontal surface.

Similar to Ben Franklin rubbing rubber and amber rods with various materials, you rub the insulator to deposit charge. Now there's some charge deposited on the insulator, and it is fairly trapped there, since that's what insulator means. You put the plate on the insulator and something invisible happens. The charges in the conductor move around freely. The like charges move away from the charges on the insulator and the different charges move close to the insulator. Very little charge actually transfers between the 2. It is not strictly necessary to bring them into direct contact, but usually the plate is set on the insulator.

Now the trick is that, with the plate on the insulator, you ground the top of the plate. Since the top of the plate is where all the like charges were hanging out, you effectively remove more of the like charge than the different charge. When you remove the ground, you are left with a charged plate.

This method of charging something is called induction.

In so charging the plate, it is interesting to note that it acquires a charge opposite that of the charge deposited on the insulator. The charge on the insulator remains the same as before you performed the induction. You can transfer the charge from the plate onto something else and repeat the whole thing without having to rub the insulator again.

Repeating this process can allow you to deposit a considerable charge onto something with incredibly low-tech equipment.

A fairly cool professor popped into my office this afternoon and gave me a gift.
It's some nice dark chocolate he picked up in London while he was there for the past few weeks.

I barely know the guy. I helped him out with the A/V system in one of the classrooms one day.
There's no reason I deserved a gift, but he did it.
    I work with good people.

Mmm, did he make physical contact? Like lightly holding your shoulder or something? This is a sign that he wants to pitch. If he stuttered or stammered instead and was kinda shy, he wants you to pitch.

Just remember to use a rubber
  36. #20286
MMM your knowledge of baseball will come in super handy here. Like JKDS is saying, when you're up to bat, the fairly cool professor is gonna pitch a rubber ball to you. That's when you do a slow head bob and accept the chocolate. By doing this, you'll have proven that you deserve it.

    You guys!

He was giving the chocolates out to a bunch of people, I was surprised that he included me, as I'm the new guy and I've only really met him once before.

    No contact, no stammering, BTW.
I mean... there's no reason you guys are wrong, here, but I don't think that's what was going on. (I lived in Seattle for a while; I've been hit on by dudes before. I'm not saying I'm an expert on knowing when I'm being hit on by either sex, though.)

See all of you amateur misogynists need to gather around and listen so you can learn how to step your game up and do this shit right.

The cautionary tale version of what happened is that I had a client whose content manager was a really annoying, incompetent woman. [Edit: I want to point out that this was by far the most incompetent person in the type of position she held that I have ever known in my life.] I let them know I was not going to be working with them anymore because I don't work with annoying, incompetent people. Then she called me a misogynist and suggest that I didn't want to work with her because she was a woman.

Over Christmas (a few months later), she had posted on a message board for people in my industry putting me on blast for being a misogynist. This was a part of a rant she went on about getting fired, and it included pretty much calling every person in the industry a sexist, woman-hating asshole because of her inability to succeed.

I got in contact with her previous employer once I found out about this (which was earlier this week), and he offered me what was previously her job, but it pays less with less flexibility than what I have going on now, and it would have required me to interact with more people than I have to now, so I was like lol no. I'm back writing for the guy now, though.

Unrelated, but I thought Carrie Fisher was always over-rated in the looks department. She was also a druggie during the time the Star Wars films were being made.

aniston not overrated because she was never rated super highly. plus nips. monica overrated. dont get me started on phoebe's retard ass.

i wouldn't call fisher overrated since i dont think she was ever rated that highly. most of us could take or leave her scantily clad jabba slave scenes. i probably would have preferred harrison ford in the getup just to see if he had abs. fisher is the sister who nobody wants to marry but wouldn't be upset if that's all that was left.

    Wrong!

Friends was a great show. I enjoyed it when it was first put and then for some reason it became fashionable to not think it was a good show and I at some point joined that bandwagon.

But then I recently actually watched a couple of episodes and couldn't belive how funny it was.

    Example : https://youtu.be/bIIm7yBdUG4

I mean how can you watch that and not laugh?

I hated it back then and I still hate it now. It's vomit inducing. It's five fucking annoying cunts and one funny cute woman, all taking it in turns to make bad jokes.

I would consider Hell to be being stuck in the Friends set for all enternity.

Let's put it this way, if I were told with a gun to my head that I had to watch 8 hours of Friends, or have 8 hours of sex with spoon, I'd have a tough decision to make.

Of course I didn't, it's fucking Friends, I have no intention of forcing that shite into my eyes on a saturday afternoon. I got better stuff to do, like smoke weed and read crap on the internet while still in my underwear.

A friend of mine is obsessed with Aniston. Fuck knows why, but he is. I sometimes catch him and his wife watching Friends. Yeah he's married, somehow. Anyway, in an episode of Friends, I might laugh once or twice, and it's nearly always Kudrow. The rest of the time, I'm wanting to claw my eyes out and stab my ears. It's tedious and cringeworthy.

It might be a funny clip, it won't prove anything other than a) it can be funny, and b) it's still annoying even when it's funny.

My problems with Friends, in bullet points...

    - Jennifer Aniston
    - canned laughter
    - That cunt who plays Ross
    - the accents
    - the fact they're all fucking each other yet remain friends
    - Courtney Cox
    - New York
    - the cunts whose names I can't even rememer
    - Chandler
    - the other twat
    - it isn't funny
    - Joey
    - fuck I remembered
    - it makes me cringe
    - the intro music
    - death seems preferable

Ross is my favourite character. I think you do actually like it but at the beginning when it was popular you had to go against the grain because that's just kinda how you are, and now you're too stubborn to change.

haha so you think I'm a stubborn nonconformist.

I mean that's exactly what I am, but it's by accident, not design!

I just can't bear to bring myself to watch it out of choice. I'd rather sit in silence and stare at a blank screen for four minutes.

    himself fucker.
Aniston's character on Friends would bounce her foot when she was sitting with her legs kicked up. It was very cute. Pretty sure it subconsciously bumped her up 2-3 points easily.

That clip is funny and it also shows how spoiled we are with absurdist comedy these days.

ross was a step above every other character.

i was never a friends fan because ive basically always been a hipster with regards to not liking popular things for the reason that they are popular, but the show was funny and i enjoyed watching it from time to time.

    Read Sweden from here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_and_crime

Tl;dr: Immigrants do 25% of crime and their children 20% more. 45% of crime is commited by non-natives.
immigrants from Africa and Southern and Western Asian were more likely to be charged of a crime than individuals born to two Swedish parents by a factor of 4.5 and 3.5 respectively.

Findings from a previous study published by the Swedish government in 1996 determined that between 1985 and 1989 individuals born in Iraq, North Africa (Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia), and Africa (excluding Uganda and the North African countries) were convicted of rape at rates 20, 23, and 17 greater than individuals born in Sweden respectively.

Same thing in Finland. 2.2% immigrant population commit 27% of rapes.
    Multiculturalism as fuck.

White people dominated the world, and therefore mass media, in which their sexual ideal of femininity was expressed as the ideal. So you have young impressionable boys around the world growing up jerking it to a mental image of Jennifer Anniston, which is a essentially a mythological being in their native country-- but when they immigrate to Sweden, it's everywhere, and, well, gg.

P.s. I'm sort of trolling, but sort of not-- like, there's undeniably a huge impact made by pop culture depicting the pinnacle of female sexuality being a white woman or at the very least a woman with more typically white features.

I don't bring this type of thing up that much anymore since you people seem to want to just stick your heads in the sand, but there's a war on men going on, and ignoring it or denying it isn't going to change that.

Man ordered tell police if he's going to have sex

A man cleared of raping a woman has been ordered to give police 24 hours' notice before he has sex.

The man, in his 40s, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was acquitted in 2015 at a retrial after claiming the alleged victim had consented.

An interim sexual risk order, initially imposed in December, has been extended for four months by magistrates in York.

It requires the man disclose any planned sexual activity to the police or face up to five years in prison.

The order - which was drawn up by magistrates in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, and extended in York - reads: "You must disclose the details of any female including her name, address and date of birth.

"You must do this at least 24 hours prior to any sexual activity taking place."

It also contains restrictions on his use of the internet and mobile phone devices and requires him to inform officers of any change of address.

A further court hearing in May will decide whether the interim order should be made into a full order, which has a minimum duration of two years and can last indefinitely.

Sexual risk orders were introduced in England and Wales in March last year and can be applied to any individual who the police believe poses a risk of sexual harm, even if they have never been convicted of a crime.

They are civil orders imposed by magistrates at the request of police.
So you go ahead and spin this however you want while you cheer on the same liberal shitheads that think that more government control is always a good thing. This is almost the equivalent of being put on the sex offender list without committing a crime. It's a fucking dystopian nightmare, it's really happening, and it's only going to get worse.

I see that you're upset about this, spoon. We all do. We're not confused about how spoony feels about these issues.

I just don't see what you're trying to accomplish. I don't see your goal.

You seem to have done more than could be hoped in most circumstances like these. I.e. you have made your point clearly, encouraged thought-provoking dialogue, swayed opinions, etc.

What more could you hope for?

That is why I'm done engaging you on these issues. To the degree that you have swayed my mind, it is swayed. To the degree that your tone and seeming goal is incite internet rage...

    Well, that's dumb.

Seems to me that you've described the problem quite well.
Now what kind of man are you?
    A) The kind that whines about problems and waits for other people to make his life better
    B) The kind that uses his intelligence and wit to affect change in his world
    C) ?

In the spirit of showing restraint, I'll say that I don't really think you're the audience I'm speaking to.
