SRV is awesome, and probably better technically than hendrix...though it's hard to tell cuz all the drugs SRV did made him play faster, where hendrix was always ripped on crazy hallucinogens so I've gotta give the medal to him as it's harder to play when your guitar looks like a melting snake.

Also I always found hendrix's playing to have a little more soul. cuz he's black ofc.

I fundamentally agree with this but I think if you take the drugs out of the equation you still have two different types of players that both have a fuckton of soul. While Stevie was more technical and probably overproduced, Jimmy imo only gets more soul credit because of his sloppy, not givin a fuck style.

Well jimi was far more groundbreaking for the time, wrote more great songs and did more to innovate blues/rock guitar than stevie.

I don't mean to slag on stevie, cuz I am a fan -- but I get the impression that stevie was just a big jimi fan that polished that style and did it fucking well -- but stevie would agree with me that jimi > stevie
  5. #7880
SRV would agree that Jimi was better, as would every other guitarist on the planet who came after Jimi

I, OTOH, believe SRV was better. Maybe not groundbreaking, but that man could fucking rock

    Firstly, I'm a lifelong metalhead and Yngwie's a fag.

Secondly, yeah, we all want to believe Stevie would give that cred to Jimi and he probably would. But I guarantee not every guitarist that came after Jimi would agree, myself included. And I love Jimi. Jimi himself when asked what it was like to be the worlds greatest guitarist said, "I don't know. Why don't you ask Billy Gobbons?" (That's really just a myth, but I'm semi drunk so w/e)

As far as Jimi being > Stevie? I think that's a matter of opinion. Personally I couldn't label either one better. More groundbreaking? Maybe but in what ways? If Stevie never covered any Hendrix songs would you even know he was influenced by him? Maybe you could pick out some stuff like the 1 1/2 step note bends but musically the style of music is very different. Stevie basically reinvented the Texas blues sound and he had plenty of other influences to get there. Pretty much have to give Lonnie Mack more credit than Hendrix for molding SRVs career. Add in Jazz greats like Wes Mongomery and you're getting closer.

Saying Jimi's better than Stevie is like saying Steve Vai is better that Joe Satriani, except for the fact that he is.

I have no clue where I'm going with this so Imma stop now.

Oh what I was gonna say is if you're stance is Jimi's better because he's more groundbreaking and innovative than Chuck Berry must be better than Jimi. And Robert Johnson better than that.

Well I would, because both taught me more riffs and basically shaped how I attempt to play lead guitar (am bad, much better rhythm guitarist/drummer but I digress...), and there's masiv overlap between both. ofc stevie had other influences that shaped his sound uniquely, and he f'n owned that sweet fender/tubescreamer tone... but jimi was still a better songwriter. guitar player? I might give that to stevie, but jimi's overall more of a legend for the rest of the factors.

Just put on some SRV and totally lost any motivation to master debate music cuz lol intellectual wankery when music's all about the sooooooouul, man

Sure, why not? They're f'n awesome too. except they did not rock to the level acceptable to my personal musical sensibilities.

(wow almost edited yer poast again)

I dunno, SRV and Double Trouble put together songs that are almost perfect in their own way. To me, SRV epitomizes a guitar-lover front-man
  14. #7889
oh yeah, getting back to my original point: it is much harder to play guitar on powerful hallucinogens than it is powerful stimulants.

like not even close, gtfo, Q.E.D. bitchez etc.

I enjoyed the song, but my reservations about the guitar remain. I greatly appreciate what JH and SRV were able to do to change the timbre of the guitar throughout the songs, and their interpretations are very soulful. The damn thing just doesn't appeal to me in any way. This is great music, so I don't really care about the instruments too much in the moment. That of course is always true. In this respect I have foolishly limited myself musically, so that's my mistake...and I can completely understand why it's so popular. It's quite an expressive instrument, I just happen to dislike much of its aural characteristics.

I'll withdraw my prior statement about the electric guitar, as it was too heavily based on my own tastes and mostly ignored the expressive potential of the instrument and even the social context that contributes to its appeal. It's a great instrument that I happen to think sounds like a shoebox full of dried shit, shaken like a tambourine.

I will keep listening though, so I'm glad this has happened. Perhaps I'll come around some day...

I don't like Stevie. I think all of his songs are the same, like most songs in the blues genre.

I realize that Jimi Hendrix was also essentially a blues guitarist, but I believe his music transcended the blues and was more of a psychedelic progressive rock concoction of his own design. SRV on the other hand played strictly within the genre and didn't really do anything to move the genre forward. He also had imo a terrible rhythm section and the rhythm section was one of my favorite things about the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Based on the link name I'd best not click it while still in work. it was wuf's signatures that made me disable all, so yeah I'd take disabling just his.

Looking to buy a desktop computer. Don't really want to build one. Someone find me something in the 800-1500 range. Must be able to play diablo 3, play blurays and other movies while multitabling, and multi table ftr.

I didn't want to start a new thread since there have been a lot so if someone could point me to the latest, thanks!

multitabling? You're American. And since when do you play poker?

That being said, for around 1500$ you can definitely build a system that will crush D3. Where is Sawyer? I forget the name of that site that gives you BIY guidelines-- even if you don't want to BIY, it's a good resource to figure out what components you should be looking for. That being said, I highly recommend that you BIY, as you get a better bang for your buck, you avoid all the prepackaged software that bogs down your system from the get go, and it's actually kinda fun.

    *shrug*

It's like how buying a used car (as an informed, knowledgeable buyer) is almost always better than buying new. Sure there could be some potential set backs and unforeseen issues with a used car, but as long as you have half a brain and do a bit of research, you'll come out ahead in the in the long run.

edit: to be clear, I don't think there is anything wrong with buying a new car or buying a prebuilt computer. I think they are often the suboptimal choice for competent people, but it's also hard to measure a variable like "comfort" and "ease of mind." My jab at Dana's vagina was not meant to call out all men who are afraid to change their oil or use a charcoal grill-- it was simply a retort to his apparent aversion to taking on a simple(albeit, initially daunting), yet rewarding challenge.

I was skeptical. Now, I'd like to know if I should pray to the DollarShave God, or if he goes by a different name.

So if I'm getting some kind of 0x0000007e......... error when I try to start windows, is it likely I can get it fixed or is it time to dump it? It starts in safe mode.

This has also coincided with my discovery of several Trojans and my attempt (via several runs of sas) to remove them. Likely related?

Error message has now changed to irql not less or equal. But from what I've read this normally happens after new installations or new software, neither of which is the case.

    Nope.

But u found a laptop repair guy that opened at 7am and says he should have it fixed today for just 39 quid. Considering I need ro take it with me to Thailand tomorrow and I'm working all day today this is a minor miracle that nearly made me start a new thread titled things that untilt you.

Anyone know of any good websites for researching March Madness matchups? I'm filling out a bracket for the first time and don't know much about the teams

They just said on TV that the dinosaurs were wiped out by a meteorite hitting Mexico, but I reckon it's BS propoganda, I think it's a conspiracy, the Americans did it so they could steal their oil. I blame Bush.
