Default Premier League 13/14 discussion thread

Charity shield today (or w/e you call it these days). Man utd need to make a statement. We've signed nobody, one of our biggest stars is talking about leaving, our legendary manager has gone and his replacement hasn't done much to impress (not that he's had much opportunity) and we've not exactly set the world alight in our friendlys.

But, we do have RVP, we are the champions and wigan should be no problem for an in form united.

So I'm hoping for a 5-0 thumping or similar. As it stands I think chelsea and citeh, with new managers and players, are going to be considerably more competitive than utd unless we can bag a couple of midfielders and maybe a striker to replace Wayne. Well that's what I'd like to see.

In fact I'd like to see a new young centre back as eventual replacement for out aging pair, fellaini and either a striker with rooney being turned into play maker or a new attacking central midfielder with rooney staying as a striker or both with rooney being sold.

Anywho. Today should be interesting at least because its the first competitive match in a long time.

Don't understand why Utd. picked Moyes. Would have thought they would go after someone who has won a few titles around Europe. Not that I don't think Moyes isn't any good, it just surprised me a lot I must admit.

@keith - I lived in bury until I was 4. Not that it matters. I don't care who people support. If you're happy when they win, sad when they lose and care about the team then you support them, regardless of where you live.

@pk + it didn't surprise me, disappointed me sure, but not surprised. It's a dull long term option picked by Ferguson who was looking for a younger version of himself.

2-0 against a very average wigan side - not the best first match but a win is a win i guess. when i say average i mean wigan were awful

looking like it could be a great season for swansea, canas looked really impressive as a holding midfielder v malmo, we've held onto michu and all our big players too
  8. #8
TOP 8 FOR SWANS, they look good for that. CARDIFF need a posative start. they could be better than pundits think

I have no idea why Moyes is being given the crap he's getting. He was the most outstanding candidate imo, someone who has managed one club reasonably successfully for a decade, has the respect of most managers and players in the league, blah blah blah. He's basically said fuck off Wayne, RVP is our number one, and the Utd fans are still all waa waa he's out of his depth. Jesus. Everyone would be out of their depth following in Ferguson's footsteps.

Anyway, what Keith said. Go watch Truro, you glory grabbing glory hunter.

Also, fuck the EPL, we didn't get promoted so the Championship is what matters again this season.

    Also, shit on the Villa.

I'm a little nervous for this season.

I am pretty sure we will play much better, attacking football under Martinez but I'm worried about our defence. We have played such a high line all pre-season and it just looks so weak.

Jelavic is looking like he is back on form again so hopefully him and Mirallas can have a really good season. Expecting us to finish 6th, maybe even 5th.

Still can't get over the fact we got ~20m for him! Another one of Liverpool's fantastic signings!

Yeah if Spurs lose Bale I think we could challenge them for 5th. Arsenal don't look that good either, I would happy with 6th and some European football again but would like to see us fighting for a little higher.

Sam Allardyce is set to undergo a medical at West Ham after agreeing to pay £5m for Stewart Downing.

If Spurs lose Bale they'll have a shit load of money to spend on new players to strengthen their squad. I think they'll be better off for selling him and getting some depth to their team.

Also Everton are going to have a tough time with Martinez, just going to be leaking goals all season imo.
  29. #29
I like Martinez (obviously, he used to manage us). I wouldn't underestimate him with a good squad and a solid defence, which Wigan never had. Although I think his signing choices can leave a lot to be desired

Bale going to RM seems more like a brand thing than a football thing. Paying £85m+ for him will make him an instant worldwide superstar, even more so than he already is, and he's got massive brand appeal at a very young age. He's fast, scores spectacular goals and has trickery. He'd be a great marketing asset for RM so I think there's more to it than just football. Spurs seem to spend quite cleverly and I think Soldado is a good signing.

Another clever signing although I'm loathe to say it is Medel for Cardiff. 26 years old and very impressive for Seville for £12.5m. He should fit well into the physical style of the PL but I imagine he'll get sent off for some stupid challenges pretty quickly so they'll have to work hard on toning him down.

Swansea have made some hugely impressive looking signings. Bony is sick, great goal scoring record in Holland v plenty of good teams, physically strong but also fast, plenty of international experience and only 24. Should have a big impact IMO and well worth the price tag

Canas also really impressed me v Malmo. We really needed a solid holding midfielder and I'd not relaly seen him play before but he looks way more experienced (v Malmo at least in the 0-0) than 26, taking plenty of time on the ball and picking out nice passes. He moves a hell of a lot and made a beautifully pass with the outside of his foot over the defence for Bony to score his (not) "offside" goal. A great player to have in a starting lineup or on the bench IMO but would have to see more

He's been using his trusty high line defence all pre-season and it's just not working. In our game against Real Madrid, Ronaldo was tearing us apart having a clear run on goal from like 30 yards all game.

I also don't like his 3 at the back formation. I don't think it works well for us and I hope he doesn't persist with it ( like he did with WIgan )

Yet another moan, I don't like his signings. He has brought half of Wigan with him and left the only decent players they have! ( Mcmanaman and McCarthy ). We being heavily linked with McCarthy but he just isn't worth the £15m price tag that's doing the rounds, if we pay that I will go insane.

On the plus side, he seems to have got Jelavic back on form, he has been on fire pre-season. Same with Mirallas and the ever consistent Baines.

Even though most of this post is negative I am actually looking forward to the start of the new season and ushering in a new era. I am excited to see the footy that we will play and what Martinez can do. I am going back home for the Chelsea game so hopefully I will like what I see.

I have faith in Martinez at Everton. Similar to Moyes he makes the most out of what he's got. I expect a top 6 finish and ahead of Liverpool again.

I expect us at the very least to finish ahead of Liverpool, especially if they lose Suarez.

It's hard to say with the new signings we've made who are all very young, unexposed in the prem but have done well for the former clubs. We've strengthened up at the back buying Okore & Luna but IDK if these are players are Premiership standard.

Should be interesting to see how Tonev & Helenius fit in, I'm looking forward to see if Helenius will play alongside Benteke with Tonev and Gabby out wide. If Beneteke carries the team and we play poorly he will be gone by Christmas but if he plays well and we do OK it will be interesting to see if he stays. I personally wouldn't blame him leaving as it's world cup year but atm he's only had one good season to go off!

I think we will avoid relegation but a lot depends on how the new kids slot in, the current squad have more experience and have survived a relegation battle which will only do them good.

    Who do you support?

    edit -

Cleverly starting for England is just . Same goes for Walcott though, two players who are just nowhere near international standard. Good to see Wilshere playing though, he's going to be quality, shame it looks like his whole international career is going to be hampered by Cleverly.

That's not a bad team. Cech in goal should get a few clean sheets and anelka and soldado should bag a few goals plus your whole midfield should do well for goals and assists.

    lol Arsenal.

Man Utd team looks super strong. We should win this by some distance. Would rather see Zaha than Valencia on the pitch though. Our bench even looks strong. I'm feeling more confident now.

Really not a fan of this SNF thing, is horrid.

Replace Cleverly w/ a quality creative CM and maybe a winger would be pretty awesome squad. Valencia just needs to go back to how he was playing two seasons ago and we wouldn't even need another winger. Giggs plays too much imo and obviously Cleverly just isn't good enough atm to be starting regularly. Decent enough squad player though and hopefully will develop but I'm not too hopeful.

P.Jones is the man though, so good.

The chip was beautiful. The bicycle kick was beautiful. It's beautiful day.

And in spite of Rooney looking moody, he still looked good and got an assist, debatably 2 but one for sure. I want him to stay.

Oh, actually that was at the end of the game, not after Welbeck's goal. I may cry a little.

But seriously, there must be about another 4 players somewhere else on the pitch who we can't see. He may be walking with a few other players. Obviously I'm clutching at straws a bit.

Why is that clutching at straws? It's just a picture to make people talk when in reality it means nothing. Take that picture from a different angle and you could make it look like any player in the huddle isn't part of the group.

But do I understand it right, that for one transfer you can sell one, and buy one in the same turn? Or only sell one, then buy one next gameweek. It doesn't state that in the rules. I suppose you can sell/buy one in same turn, but I just want to be sure, not to lose 4 points

You pick one player to take out the team and replace him with someone else - that's one transfer

I realise that was a stupid question by me LOL

But now we are at it, here is another "stupid" question. I was wondering about something. I was disgusted that I didn't pick Van Persie as captain, but then I came to think about it. I picked Cech, and it seems Chelsea is playing two matches within Gameweek 1. So does Cech get double points in both matches? If yes, it would obviously be a benefit in many cases to pick a captain who'll play twice within one Gameweek, right?

Yeah, Cech gets double points for both games. Teams won't always have 2 games in one week though.

Yup he does. There aren't many teams that play twice in one game week though, Chelsea only do it this week because they've got the Super Cup at the end of September on a Friday night
