I'm just saying that I don't intend to recommend anyone see the movie. That's not to say it's a bad movie or a movie you shouldn't see (as it is the opposite of those). I just don't want to be associated with being the one who made you feel so blue for an evening.

    You, sir, lack conviction.

"Don't be mistaken, it's not a feel good movie by any means, but its an amazing piece of cinema that should not be missed."

There, we have absolved ourselves of any responsibility for the sadness of those following our recommendation, while also giving them a good reason to check it out.

I think you're missing the tone of my original post. Remember that adjacent to saying I wouldn't recommend watching Grave of the Fireflies to someone, I said that 2001: A Space Odyssey was a painful experience and that you should pick your spots for Raise the Red Lantern.

These weren't reviews of the movies as they should be but reviews of the movies as they were enjoyed, with people.

If, however, you and I were going to sit down for a pensive night of soul searching, I would have no issue with exploring any of the depths of the human condition be them by movie or book or star-gazing.

Maybe I should just split off these post into their own thread, since my original post was a derail of sorts.

edit nah, the thread can survive it.

Pensive night of soul searching? Can we just toss out cinema and literature and get straight to the star gazing- which, of course, clearly leads to man-love?

Looking to explore some other depths, hmmm?
If we're playing gay-kamakazi, I almost blinked at this post myself.

*bites lower lip and slowly nods*

Where I'm from its called gay-chicken. Like the driving towards each other and whoever swerves first loses game, but instead of cars and speed you have gay flirting and sensual caresses. I'm very bad at the game, but some friends of mine are suspiciously good at it.

    Scarface

I'm a big Tarantino guy, but my favorite Tarantino movie isn't a Tarantino movie:

    1. True Romance
    2. Kill Bill (vols. 1&2, but really, 1 is better)
    3. The Matrix
    4. Serenity
    5. Godfather II
    6. LOTR (all of them I guess, but I suppose The Two Towers is the best)
    7. Pulp Fiction
    8. Full Metal Jacket
    9. Unforgiven
    10. Batman Begins

There are movies I used to include on this list, like "The Hustler," "Gangs of New York" and "The Crow," but to be honest I haven't seen them in like 12-15 years and probably couldn't remember a single line from them.

If this list weren't geeky enough, I'd really like to add some sort of Battlestar Galactica mention, maybe "Razor."

well i liked your list so i decided to take your recommendation of The Terminal....I just wanted to warn anyone else that may do the same, unless you like really boring long shitty movies, then this one probably isnt for you. Take this as a complement that i liked your list so much that i went with a movie from it.

I've been thinking about this all morning and I find the exercise surprisingly stressful. An overall top ten is hard because I don't know what criteria to use and I can justify the inclusion of so many films as the criteria varies.

So instead here's a few movies that haven't been mentioned yet but are worth a watch.

Nil by mouth - realistic and brutal portrayal of life in London for the kinda scummy working-class folk I grew up around and this movie nails it.
Desperado - he has a guitar case full of guns, come on!
    Amelie
    Amores Perros
Labyrinth - best kids movie ever
I'm the king of bongo, baby I'm the king of bongo bong.

I had the same frustration as Rong... so here's some version of my top ten, off the top of my head:

    Goodfellas
    The Godfather
    Adaptation
    Being John Malkovich
    Swingers
    Grave of the Fireflies
    Oldboy
    Requiem for a Dream
    Sideways
    Inglourious Basterds

Would I be correct in assuming only those with experience of drugs would pick requiem for a dream?
I'm the king of bongo, baby I'm the king of bongo bong.
  34. #109
I guess you could say that's sort of why I picked it, but not exactly. There is a typical teenage sentiment attached to it, watching it in 9th grade with my friends and discovering my own experimental side (not that I was looking to Requiem as a guide to that or anything, hah, definitely not).

I added Requiem to this list because I still think it's an objectively stunning movie. The cinematography, the direction, the music, the structure, everything. It's also one of the more impressive book-to-movie adaptations.

But that movie also carries a lot of weight for me... I watched it with my first serious boyfriend, who ended up dying of an overdose when I was 16, and whom I subsequently found out was deeper into hard drugs than I ever could have fathomed, naive as I was (I mean, if someone I cared about told me now that they had tried heroin "once," I wouldn't simply believe them, especially if they had depressive tendencies). So yeah, I have a very strong emotional connection to the film, but I wouldn't have added it to that list if I didn't think it could objectively hold its own.

(then again you know what, I haven't seen the film since high school probably - sometimes even listening to the music is too much for me - but I think I remember it well enough, and I believe I would feel the same way about its merit if I watched it again now)

I want more than 10, fuck you and your rules.

Natural Born Killers, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Twin Town, Dead Man's Shoes, True Romance, Black Cat White Cat, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, Monty Pyhton's Life of Brian, The Shining, Snatch, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Indiana Jones trilogy (fuck #4), Terminator 1 & 2, Battle Royale, Full Metal Jacket

I count 20 there (21 if you're a cunt who counts Kill Bill as two films).

That was me. I bought the book and took it on holiday with me. Did I read it? Did I fuck. I spent most of my time drinking and smoking instead.

I sometimes try reading, but it usually fails after an hour max.

Stephen King puts it best: "an insanely entertaining pulp riff that combines Survivor with World Wrestling Entertainment. Or maybe Royale is just insane."

This is like, the number one book I would recommend to non-readers.

    also:

    + Ghost World
    + In Bruges

Also, that film with the chick with the pigtails who has a labotomy and has a cool head journey where she dances to a Bjork song while fighting massive baddies.

The fuck is that called? It was awesome, but that's probably because the chick is beautiful, the soundtrack exceptional, and the cinemography outstanding.

A quick think gave me over 20 titles that could easily qualify as top 10. To set an arbitrary break point, I'd give this as a top ten list:

    The Nightmare Before Christmas
    Spirited Away
    The Princess Bride
    Robin Hood: Men in Tights
    Pulp Fiction
    Fight Club
    Forrest Gump
    Ferris Bueller's Day Off
    Shawshank Redepmtion
    Full Metal Jacket

    ***
Any of the following titles could make the list on another day, or if I'm in another mood:

    LOTR
    Alladin
    The Matrix
    12 Monkeys
    Back to the Future
    American Beauty
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    Monty Python's Life of Brian
    Heat
    Groundhog Day
    The Truman Show
    His Girl Friday
    Mr Holland's Opus

    ***
I'm sure I'll think of more movies that deserve at least an honorable mention.

Here's some random ones from my top 100:

    The Lives of Others
    Inglorious Basterds
    Amelie

Fight Club, yes I forgot that too. That's in my list of however many I want.

Did I see someone dissing Labrynth? Aubrey? How can you not have nothing but admiration for David Bowie in those tights?

Don't worry scro'! There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick ass lives. My first wife was 'tarded. She's a pilot now.

I've never seen it. Looking to add it to a list of 'must see' now.

(I have seen 'Duel' though... when it was first released. It was the talk around our family dinner table for a couple weeks after)

    Are you 80 years old?

Good movie but I saw it about 35 years after it was released.

    Jaws
    Goodfellas
    Godfather
    Die Hard
    The Shawshank Redemption
    The Silence of the Lambs
    The Big Lebowski
    Spy Game
    Pulp Fiction
    Groundhog Day

Honorable Mentions to: Seven Samurai A Clockwork Orange, The Dark Knight, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Fight Club, The Matrix, Top Gun, Breakfast Club, Heat, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Unforgiven and Before (Fucking) Sunrise - srsly.

Imma cheat a bit and say Band of Brothers and Lonesome Dove are the best mini-series ever for very different reasons.

    Hmmmm Lonesome Dove hmmmmm

Why would I like this Benny? Higher rating than Generation Kill (which is the bees knees) and I love westerns, but I hate shitty westerns *cough* Wild Bunch *cough* The Good The Bad and The Ugly *cough* anything with John Wayne *cough*

Butch Cassidy and Unforgiven are legit though

Lonesome Dove has some of the best character writing and depictions I've ever seen, not just in Westerns, but in cinema. Particularly, Robert Duvall's performance is close to the pinnacle of acting, imo.

It's not an overly heroic movie. It's harsh and tragic and as a result of that setting, impressively human.
