If we were to argue whether outward expressions of homosexuality and things like gay pride parades have had their place in changing mainstream opinion over the years I doubt I would raise any points to the contrary. I probably should not have said that I was "against" gay pride parades as that can easily be misconstrued as saying I don't think they should ever have existed though. But I do think they are obscene - and I can have that viewpoint, can't I? Is it not just personal preference?

As for carnival, it seems to me scantily clad women / festive atmosphere etc would sound like a good time. I happen to like women. So I'd definitely check that shit out if I were in Brazil that time of year. Is it obscene though? Maybe. That is, to say, I probably wouldn't bring my children to it.

If your argument boils down to me being shortsighted unless I equally value something like carnival and something like a gay pride parade then I can't say I agree with that at all.

btw Bikes, gettin real tired of your shit man. It strikes me as odd that you seemingly take potshots at me for no apparent reason from time to time without bringing anything to the discussion. I'm sure you're a nice guy irl and shit, but, shocker, if you knew me personally you'd probably think the same of me.

I'm not sure what you mean by "value both of them equally." My point is that they both are "obscene", so I'm not really sure why you'd presumably be ok with one and not with the other. No one's forcing you to go, forcing you to bring your kids, or forcing you to suck a big fat cock. You can hold whatever viewpoint you'd like, and I can hold the viewpoint that your viewpoint sucks. However, I'd prefer to articulate why I think you have a shitty viewpoint. If all you can say in response is "well, we are all entitled to our opinions" you've retreated to a false stalemate.

My point boils down to the fact that people are different and they should have every right to express their differences so long as it doesn't restrict someone else's rights. Whether you like their expression or not doesn't really matter, and I'm quite curious to know why you would think it does. "I personally don't think I'd care to attend a pride parade, but that's cool that they do their thing" is a perfectly reasonable stance. However, eing against a person or group's freedom of expression because you don't find it aesthetically pleasing is pretty much indefensible.

Boost, reread my post man. I said I should have not used the term "against" gay pride parades as that has the connotation of perhaps thinking they should not be allowed. As for not liking them, I care little for whether you think this viewpoint is shitty. I don't like mashed potatoes, but don't dispute the right of others to like mashed potatoes. But does my tolerance for, or the feasibility of my viewpoint towards mash potatoes have to be measured in how much I personally like how they taste? Come on, man.

A straight couple making out in public is indeed just as obscene as a gay couple making out in public. However, being that I am a straight man, I can relate more to the straight couple making out in public because it's something that I've done. Being that I've never had an urge to kiss another man in public I can relate less to this. But in no way do I dispute their right to do it, nor do I devalue their own desires or needs just because I don't personally have them. Assail this point of view, please, I want to hear it. I want to hear you tell me that I should like things that are gay just as much as things that are straight because saying otherwise makes me shortsighted or, worse, bigoted.

I think mine is a very defensible viewpoint. Not all things gay should be applauded just because they're gay. There are situations that call for outward expression for political ends and then there are situations where outwards expressions of homosexuality are inappropriate or at least unnecessary.

Let me again stress that I was wrong to use the word "against" because of the connotations it has. But, so long as we're using anecdotes to justify arguments, I have a few gay acquaintances who themselves have said that they are "against" gay pride parades because of how they perpetuate gay stereotypes.

Maybe we shouldn't be arguing, then, because I've never said this wasn't the case.

For sure. We probably do agree more than our propensity for argument shows.

All I'll say is that you should just be sure to be very clear of your stance on this issue, as the gays are the underdog. If you aren't careful and no one calls you on it, they might say "yeah, fuck those homos" and feel they have someone else standing with them. Then they go to the ballot box... That's really my biggest fear, a dispassionate and inarticulate majority who favors civil rights, losing out to a vocal and mistakenly encouraged bigoted minority when it comes time to vote.

Yeah you're absolutely right. While at its core I think my viewpoint is quite innocuous it can be easy to misconstrue it or, worse, for me to articulate it poorly. I think maybe being from a country where LGBT issues aren't really at the forefront of politics since the major hurdles i.e. gay marriage and so on have all been passed has something to do with my viewpoint being what it is. In the US I can understand why it'd be desirable to have more people want to be actively pushing in the same direction - publicly, I mean.

How can you not like cats, they are just chilled out creatures for the most part. Can be a pain in the arse when they are kittens but soon grow out of the scratch everything and always run around stage.
  20. #95
I just think they're dicks. Like nearly without exception, every cat is a dick.
  21. #96
TIL Penney only has known like 3 cats ever
  22. #97
    This is mostly accurate

    They were all dicks

Though there was one that was pretty nice to me, I taught it to "speak" (meow) on command, which made it more of a dog to me than anything else.

And penney is right, cats ain't shit but bitches and hoes.

You know what's better than a cat? Any single dog ever, ever. Even the ones that killed innocent children. I trust the judgement of those dogs. Those kids were dicks and deserved it.

Look at that awesome dog. First hit for 'any random dog ever'. Doesn't even matter it's sideways.

Animals are awesome, pets on the other hand...

I mean, buying companionship is strange-- even stranger is having that companionship be coerced.

It's just a very peculiar arrangement, and it is even more strange since no one seems to acknowledge that it is.

Nah, dogs love that shit. Besides, most wouldn't be if not for the history of domestication that preceded them. So all those genes that give em floppy ears, eternal adolescence, and eyes that search for yours are pleased as punch. Cooperative fitness and all that.

I guess it's easy to be utilitarian with things you don't personally appreciate.. but I have no issue with a hunter having a hunting dog, or a shepherd having a dog that keeps wolves away and the flock from straying, etc. But having a dog to have a dog is peculiar to me. Even more so the more urban the setting is.

This is what causes someone to briefly black out, come to unable to differentiate between 6p and 6a, then possibly jump in a random taxi with a random group of dudes, before sprinting up the strip and hurriedly packing bags and getting in a second taxi to the airport, only to have said second taxi turn around when one realized the difference between 6p and 6a.

The only thing that made me feel better is the taxi driver told me it was not the first time it had happened to him.
