I concur. The fact that the US had just clawed back from a 0-6 deficit made this even more retarded.

It's top 5 easy... but Phelps is the sickest sports performance this olympics.
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

    dont agree.
I dont take anything away from phelps, he is clearly the greatest overall olympian in history.
But what bolt did the other night was something that is out of this world, phelps has won race after race, bolt destroyed the record books without even trying.
But w/e lots of people will have their own opinion

Not to downplay his results, but I'd hesitate to say the greatest Olympian in history. He just happens to be dominant in a sport where you can win a bunch of medals. There have been similarly dominant people in other Olympic sports also, Alexander Karelin for instance. He took gold at Super heavyweight in Greco-Roman in 88, 92 and 96, and silver in 2000 when he was scored on for the first time in 6 years and first match in 13 years. Multiple people spent their entire careers trying to beat him and came up short, like Matt Ghaffari (who took silver in 96) who was 0 for 22 against him.

i think im correct no more than anybody else thinks they're correct. there are however two differences between me and most others.

    1. i know how to admit to being wrong. one great example is back when i was big into pseudo-science stuff and posted on t-nation. if you went through my posts you would find one long ass thread where i adamantly defended the efficacy of homeopathy, yet later admitted to being wrong since i researched the subject thoroughly enough.

if you or anybody ever show me where im wrong then i will very gladly admit my position to be wrong. i do this because i hate fallacies, love learning, and a great way to learn is from mistakes.

    2. i do my best to adhere to logic and the scientific method.

now for reasons why phelps doesnt consume what the program says.

    1. that specific presentation is laughable since they're suggesting he eats the same thing every fucking day. this is super unlikely. maybe he did this once, or something that seems similar but is more different than meets the eye.

    2. it is very well documented that the media knows fuckall about things regarding nutrition and athletic training. this is even the case when they're 'provided the information' from the source. the reason for this is...

    3. it is very well documented that athletes have many illusions about their nutrition and training. it is also very well documented that exaggerations abound in this arena.

    4. this scenario falls into the category of 'magic'. somehow phelps is a superhero. somehow he can do what those who right up there with him cannot, or what those who are substantially heavier than him cannot.

    5. the only way this can be rationalized is if his training during the olympics is mega mega mega mega insane. its not. peaking doesnt work that way. you may see media sources say he burns like 8k cals a day from training alone, but he doesnt because if he did he would be a superhero since he would still be on top while his training was very sub-optimal. like i said, peaking does not work this way, and there is no fucking way that his coach doesn't understand peaking.

    6. also, he has said, and articles have been written, where he consumes 7k calories. this is far more likely. its also likely that exaggerations are involved, but not to as great a degree.

i am not claiming that there is no way that he does what the media says because i know that there is a greater than zero possibility for anything. i am however claiming that evidence is very strong that this is inaccurate information.

Ya but geeze, no one else spends 4 hours on a post to prove they're right.

I would just let you win the arguement so i dont have to spend my whole day reading your side.

    Any love for team GB?

Third in the medals table (I know, at the moment) is an incredible achievment if you've seen how poor we've been at recent Olympics, especially if you go back to 1996 where I think we only had 1 gold.

Also, if you were take a percentage based on population we'd be top. Basing on that come the end of the games, I think only Australia would be ahead of us.

Finally, we're getting the right attitude about sport (along with some crucial funding) and maybe 2012 won't be a complete embarassment.

    Love me for a season
i hate how australia have moved ahead of us in the table. Australia always go on about how they beat us in all sports but they don't actually beat britain in any sports besides ones that are only popular in a handful of nations (cricket).

And when I said Bolt's performance was sickest, I meant individual performance.

    is my current avatar.

Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian, above, threw down his Olympic bronze medal in protest yesterday after his bid for greco-roman gold was ended by a decision denounced by the Swedish coach as "politics".

Abrahamian took the bronze from around his neck during the medal ceremony, stepped from the podium and dropped it in the middle of the wrestling mat then walked off.

"This will be my last match. I wanted to take gold, so I consider this Olympics a failure," the 33-year-old said.

The Swedish wrestler had to be restrained by team mates earlier when a row erupted with judges over the decision in a semi-final bout at the Chinese Agricultural University Gym with Andrea Minguzzi of Italy, who went on the take gold.

    re wufugy:
I haven't seen any media outlet say that this is what he is eating every day. This is what he is eating when he is training. Could it be a little exaggerated? Sure. Is he eating a shit ton? Yes. Why you seem so upset about this baffles me.

Re the olympics. Bolt's performance was purty amazing - it looked cartoonish.

The debate over showing Olympic events live or on tape has been raging for some time, practically as long as Bob Costas has been avoiding grey hair.

Considering the results, mainly NBC's record-setting ratings for the Beijing Games, it seems almost pointless to knock the network's plan. In fact, delaying things by a few hours on a weekday makes some sense in maximizing the prime- time audience.

But tape-delaying the biggest event of the Olympics, the men's 100 metres race, by almost 12 hours on a Saturday is not only disingenuous, it smacks of thinking from another century. And I don't mean the 20th century.

While Usain Bolt was shattering the world record around 10: 30 yesterday morning, NBC was showing the U.S.-Spain basketball game. While interest in the so-called Redeem Team is high, surely NBC could have broken into it for the race.

Instead, it ignored the glamour event of the Games and ran a promo for its night-time coverage. Included in the promo was a nice feature on American sprinter Tyson Gay.

What that feature didn't mention, of course, was that Gay had already been eliminated in the semifinal and that Bolt had already won the event NBC was promoting.

That, of course, would have spoiled NBC's perfectly packaged coverage.

On a day when Bolt's victory would be all over newscasts and websites instantly, it seemed like a silly decision indeed...

China hit 5 US batters, US guy just cleaned out their catcher in a play at the plate, China mgr ejected, China another bean ball to the head (guy left game but looked OK), pitcher ejected, brawl incoming.

WTF is the Chinese guy thinking after hitting his homer and show-boating all the way around the bases.

I am so surprised the next batter didn't take on to the head after that display.

Wow. I was watching the uneven bar competitions last night and no offense to you yanks, but your announcers tilt me so bad. YOUR COUNTRY FUCKING LOST ONE. Get over it and stop bitching. They kept bringing it up over and over for the next hour literally whining on national tv. I know they've been like this or a long time now, but last night they seemed extra bad.

TBH in this age of Political correctness I actually enjoy the announcers telling it like it is. Now he may have gone overboard bringing it up over and over again but her not a getting at least a split-gold medal is tilting.

Pretty ricidulous that some judges found 3tenths more wrong with here routine than the Chinese girl.

The announcer brought up one really good point, trying to be fair the IOC does not allow any judge to sit on the panel if a competitor from the country is in the event. He said that because of this the judges tend to be nowhere near as good because they haven't seen competitor's like those from Romania, US, China, Russia their entire lives. Instead the judges were from South Africa, Australia, etc... places who never win olympic medals. Just food for thought. I always complain watching basketball/football because the announcers never ever call out the officials, so I'm not going to complain when they finally do.

Any canadian/euros get impartial commentators that we can compare too? I always wish they would get like an old soviet gymnast so we could actually trust what they say. Bela thinks we should have won?!!? stunning

the diving chick seems really good this year or the judging is more consistent there, she can usually call the score in advance.

Meh, usually the Canadian commentators dont say anything even close to contraversial. So i wouldnt count on hearing much from them.

The only one that ive heard complain about judging is the boxing guy Russ Amber. Hes been great imo. Going crazy every time a point isnt scored that should be, regardless of what team its for.

The diving commentator used to be a judge, so yea, she is very very good.

I think it's crazy in events not scored by judges how close the 2 gold medal counts are, and in events scored by judges how big the disparity truly is.

The guy was blatantly robbed by the judges, the same thing that happened to him in the last Olympics except in the gold medal match instead of the semi-finals. Imagine working for something for a decade or two and having judges fuck you out of it twice. I'd be pissed too.

Yeah but she tilts me too because she sounds exactly like Nancy Fuckin' Grace.

Also, I used to love watching olympic boxing, but this new scoring system combined with retarded judges makes it worthless. You can tell the boxing announcers have been tilted by the random judging too.

The follow up on this story is that the international olympic comitee has now discredited him from the medal. FILA has also erased him from the swedish participants list. As far as they are concerned, he didn't even compete.

It wasn't fine before which is why they went to this dumb system, plus I think they don't want people to get hurt and hurt is what makes boxing go.

boxing really sucks to watch, especially Olympic boxing

    The big-names sports are left

    soccer
    baseball
    basketball
    softball
    volleyball

US looks like it should definitely out-medal China in these events. American women in soccer, men/women in Bball, women in softball and perhaps men in volleyball all have huge edge over China.
