    They only made one Matrix

    And two Terminators

    And two Aliens

Yet they never made Spaceballs 2: The Soich For More Money

    (sorta spoilers)

FWIW, they set up the happy ending very well. Preston was kinda like a superhero, and that alone allows for and even predicts a happy ending without taking away much. A pure drama rendition of Orwell or similar stuff wouldn't have created their own physics engine and gun katas IMO

Of course, that's not always true. I personally find that John Preston is like Ripley or Arnold, if they don't end up killing everything and saving the day, it's a let down

The Orwell/Tetragrammaton thing was vital to the story though. Most sci-fi makes the mistake of not establishing their unique world and unique problems, but Equilibrium did not have that problem

very good points, and I do agree that they did it well.. I'm just a huge 1984 fan. But ya, don't get me wrong, equilibrium is one of my favorite movies for sure. The raid in the beginning of the movie (first scene?) just set a tone of awesome, and it was maintained throughout the movies action sequences.

    A Serious Man

I remember reading the old testament way back when and thinking: This is brilliant! Why isn't anyone making this into a movie? The good parts, not the Charlton Heston material. And finally someone did, someone who understood how funny it was.

idk if I already recommended it, but there is no shame in re-recommending it:

    Bad Boy Bubby

It is not a great movie, but it is unique. You won't be bored.

    The American

Best movie I've seen in a very long time. If you are lucky enough to have a theater near you that doesn't sell popcorn: go see it there.

Haven't watched anything in forever, recently watched a few things

Inglourious Basterds might just be the best movie ever made. This isn't the only time I've said that, but damn that was great

If you're going to watch Piranha, don't watch it in 3d. Plus you can skip the first 20 min.
    This is not a recommendation.

I guess someone already recommended Zombiland a year and a half ago, but I waited 18 months for it to be released in theaters over here, but it never was... so I just watched it at home last week :'(
Right now I'm waiting for Machete, and there still isn't a release date. This is so frustrating.

Fuck theaters. I only watch the big ones in theaters. Avatar, and most of the Pixar and Dreamworks ones becasue of my 6 year old. That's basically it over the last 2 years. I wait for a good DVDrip and that's good enough for me.

Yah... Every year there's at least one movie I'm waiting for and then it goes straight to dvd over here. I'd still rather see it in a theater if I can help it.

Quickflix® DVD & Movie Blog: Happy together - The Human Centipede review
I watched this yesterday. The review is almost better than the movie.

^^ That says it all. If you want to see a human centipede, watch it. If not, stay away.

It's funny, some people seem to "get" the whole theater thing, others would just prefer to watch it at home. I'm definitely one who "gets it." There are certainly the drawbacks (run bad and you may end up with a group who talks, and obnoxious laugh, or worst of all a fucking baby), but I think there's something special about not only the big screen but enjoying(or hating) a movie with a shitton of other people.

ya, I saw it twice in theaters... about to DL it as I haven't seen it since. Also gonna get social network cuz 97% on RT is prettying impressive.

I'm trying to not spend tons of money, so I just dl'd RED and watched it the other night. Fucking awesome. I think for what it is (Comedy/Action) it could not have been executed any better. John Malkovich is awesome as always.

Martin Scorsese can suck a nut. Had high hopes for Shutter Island, but I cannot for the life of me get past shallow sensationalism. I have absofuckinglutely no clue why it seems that every time any halfway decent director makes a psychological thriller or creepy drama they're only able to do so with sudden flashes and loud noises. I watch film with intent, and every goddamn time these dicksuck no-talent asshats use primeval and disruptive tactics to elicit an emotional response I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack.

When you read a disturbing book, you're disturbed because the writer uses profound and adept storytelling to tap into your deeper psychology, not because when you turn the page a skeleton falls from the ceiling and a horn honks in your ear. I hate these fucking clowns who belie their own perceived cinematic acumen by relying on the lowest denominator in order to create their disturbing milieu. The Departed was great, Goodfellas was great, but I swear to god Scorsese just fucked that all in the ass by treating Shutter Island like it needed a guy hiding in a darkened corner waiting for his cue to say boo

I'm doubly pissed that I wasn't even able to finish the film. I'm sure the script was awesome, but if I put up with more of that BOO OMG GOTCHA assaults on my basal senses I'd probably end up in a psych ward myself. You create a creepy environment and feeling by appealing to creepy factors of the human situation, not by hammering away at uncontrollable fight or flight responses or by overloading senses
  20. #320
Wasn't a fan of Shutter Island either. Bit of a decent twist to finish but that's it. Yea I finish my movies, even the shitty ones. I wonder how much of it comes down to not being able to use the talent in a film to bring that type of intensity. I'm not making excuses, but I can just see them getting 20% into the shooting and realize they aren't going to be able to go in a particular direction because the big name actor/actress sucks balls.
  21. #321
Just read something like that about back to the future, Michael J Fox wasn't initially casted as Marty and they shot a good bit of film with Eric Stoltz before changing lead actors.

No, the worst thing about a movie is the guy you hear whispering to his wife obvious plot points or whatever in the film like he just uncovered a hard to get piece of the film.

Best example I can think of off the top of my head would be say you're watching Rocky 4 and in the training montage it shows Drago get the needle and the theatre guy would whisper "he takes steroids!".

Or the social network trailer didn't really actually mention the name "Facebook" so when the trailer's over I hear him whisper "Facebook!".

I thought I recognized you a few weeks back at the theater!

Took my son to see Jackass 3D this weekend, he's 13. Absolutely hilarious and absolutely disgusting, but some of the best 3D I've seen to date.

I think most places are pushing it in 3D. It's not a must though, just gimmicky stuff that might be cool here or there. But a guy eating shit in 2D has oddly the same effect as one eating it in 3D.

The only reason to see it in theaters is for the 3D. Otherwise I'd wait for DVD. But in all honesty it's done incredibly well. If you haven't seen anything in the new style 3D I'd say you should (not necessarily Jackass), the added depth makes a well shot movie way better.

Same here really, but taking my son was worth it. I laughed twice as hard because he was doubled over and crying half the time. Good boys night out.

So, ive missed a couple oldish movies that are highly rated/well known.

    1) The Memento: Meh. Im left not knowing the extent of teddy's lies, not knowing the extent to which the main protagonist lied to himself, and not knowing exactly how much of a bitch that one lady was. I felt like this made the movie just kinda end abruptly (though i guess its expected with the whole backwards time thing).

    2) Insomnia (the other Christopher Nolan movie i havent seen): I liked it. I was expecting Robin Willaims to be a lil creepier (mainly cuz of his role in that Law and Order episode) but that was really my only complaint. I loved the 'corrupt' detective.

    3) American Psycho: Wtf? All i have to say is Chainsaw Sniping.

    Movies on the list

    4) Clockwork Orange

    5) The Pledge

Wow.. just caught Dead Presidents on HBO.. talk about rewatching something after not seeing it for a long time and having your positive memories completely let down. And now that I look up what the Hughes Brothers have done, they haven't made one good movie outside of Menace II Society. And even that gets taken down a peg for the ridiculous use of "II" in place of "to" in the title. It would be one thing if it was a sequel.. but... I mean.. wtf? Oh and American Pimp was pretty awesome.

Just watched Hurt Locker... was by far one of the least fulfilling movies I've ever watched. Why the fuck did it last two hours and ten fucking minutes? Srsly, can someone explain why the critics were so in love with this movie? The acting was mediocre, the directing was mediocre, the story/message/point was nonexistent... what the fuck is going on?

I loved Black Swan. Darren Aronofsky did the whole psychological thriller thing right and you really felt her go crazy. Also, Mila Kunis is stunning.

You can see this movie done right but it's called Catch 22.

Why did the industry go gaga? Chick director doing an action flick that fed the fire of domestic questioning of a shitty Republican regime. It was timely and the conditions for it were right...didn't need to be good (and wasn't, but I didn't hate it either other than the sharpshooter portions, which made me want to throw stuff - oh and when he was running through the streets of Baghdad was also laughable).

omg thank you i hated memento so frustrating. Id have to see it again to be able to put together a coherent defense of why it sucked because i cannot remember the details now but i did not care for it at all.

never seen any of the others outside of clockwork orange which is an epic movie, kinda disturbing at times but Stanley Kubrick is the fucking man

the opening quote summed it up pretty well-
The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug.

    edit-

i didnt think it got too hung up on pro war/anti war....for me it was more about adrenaline and how far some people will go to get that rush, even if it means going back to war when you've already been sent home

Just seen Orphan. It's one of those movies where you're best off not watching the trailer or reading anything about it before you see it, so I won't say anything other than that I thought it was great... it's kind of like Panic Room or Drag Me To Hell in that it's a really simple movie that stands out just by having amazing actors and being extremely well constructed.

I saw True Grit a few days ago. I guess I expected a little more twist, but it's straightforwardness was not a downfall by any means.. I have to say that I really enjoyed the dialogue, it seemed (I'm no linguistic historian so I couldn't say that it is, but only that it seemed) like the dialogue was way more authentic than other period pieces. It wasn't simply peppered with period phrases, but sentences were structured in what seemed to be an authentic way. All in all it wasn't the best movie the Cohen's have done, but it was damn good and probably the best we will get for a while now that the winter cinema drought is here.

Ya I haven't seen a lot of the "good" 2010 films, need to check out

The two most recently released films I've seen are The Town and Easy A. Both awesome.

Chick in Town is mega hot, robber movies are always good, and the dialogue is among the best in film

Easy A doesn't look like much, but is all around fun, Emma Stone is a surprisingly excellent actress, and her character's dad is the coolest dad of all time

I thought The Fighter was very good. Christian Bale did a great job

Easy A was very good for being a teen flick. And the Dad is awesome.

TylerK once told me about Primer, just gave me the name and said I should check it out.

The Man from Earth. I'm pretty sure a few people around here will enjoy it.

So I watched a few movies last night and gotta tell ya, "Lucky you" couldn't have sucked anymore than it did. On the other hand, "The man from Earth was actually pretty good considering I didn't really hear much about it. It's a decent watch. Machete had it's moments too, it was fun.

I have pan's labrynth and IP man for the weekend, will have to read those movies so I will need to be more sober.

i mentioned this in another thread and nobody said anything so im not sure if its a movie a lot of people have seen, but Army of Darkness is pretty awesome. Some Sam Raimi movie with a guy with a chainsaw for a hand. Its lolbad at parts but definitely funny and entertaining and worth a watch....i swear everything the protagonist says is a classic 1 liner

In a fit of insanity I watched Wall Street 2 the other night.

I couldn't believe how bad it was. I felt intensely sorry for the castrated Gordon Gecko whilst praying to every deity imaginable that the piece of shit film would end so I could go to bed. It had the annoying quality that many 2 star dramas have, where its head bobs just above water long enough to stop the watcher turning it off, but not long enough to stop the watcher's life force draining out of them. It eventually finished, but not before dragging me headfirst through more inconsequential twists and interspersing every stupid scene with the same weak 20 second shot of Manhattan's skyline.

    F U Wall Street 2

wtf ash you're one of the few on the forum who reads some of my posts and you watch that trash instead of getting something i rec'd guaranteed greatness?

Yeah, I haven't seen many new films in 2010. It was the tail end of Christmas and I'd forgotten what it was like to watch a crap film without being drunk and with family. I'll definitely check out some good films now that I'm back in the city and living in close proximity to a hawt cinema nerd.

On a more positive note, 127 Hours is well worth the watch. Boyle knows that the viewer knows the plot, so takes the time to explore human instinct and emotion in his unique style. His ability to juxtapose contrasts such as conscious thought vs instinct, vast expanses vs closed spaces and the large vs the miniscule ensure the viewer is taken on an awesome ride. The Scene isn't worthy of the hysteria - whilst it may stick in your head for days afterwards, it's highly doubtful you'll have any bad physical reaction unless you're the type to pass out when you cut yourself. The most horrifying aspect of it is that you can't really tell yourself it's just a film, because you know it actually happened.

    It's a quality 4* watch.
