FWIW, they set up the happy ending very well. Preston was kinda like a superhero, and that alone allows for and even predicts a happy ending without taking away much. A pure drama rendition of Orwell or similar stuff wouldn't have created their own physics engine and gun katas IMO
Of course, that's not always true. I personally find that John Preston is like Ripley or Arnold, if they don't end up killing everything and saving the day, it's a let down
The Orwell/Tetragrammaton thing was vital to the story though. Most sci-fi makes the mistake of not establishing their unique world and unique problems, but Equilibrium did not have that problem
