Thought I'd add my 2 cents:

Saw someone mentioned 21 grams, by the same chap, amores perros is a great movie too. Which also got me thinking of City of God, friggin awesome movie. You don't notice subtitles after 5 mins of wathcing a good movie which has them, providing you can read of course.

And didn't someone say they hadn't watched the usual suspects, I would pay good money to have my memory of that movie removed so I could watch it agian.

And best stupid boys cheesey action movie ever - Bit Trouble in Little China!!!!

George Romero got a new movie coming out: Survival of the Dead... Zombieland obviously and Adventureland by the guy who made Superbad. All in theaters right now or coming up.

I went to a double feature of Bad Lieutenant - the original and the new Herzog Movie. The original started at midnight and I had to get up early the next day, so I skipped the new one. If they aren't going to show it again outside of the Vienale I'll be pissed.

If you got film festivals around you - browse through their program... they feature loads of crap, but for the couple of really good ones that you might not ever get to see on a big screen again, it's worth it.

So I've been meaning to watch that movie "Evil," that wufwugy keeps blabbering about.

...pretty fucking good. I second wufwugy's recommendation.

Mad, mad respect for my boy boog. He passes the test, unlike the rest of you clownshoes (excluding mcat for watching Celebration). It is 100% impossible for me to like non-awesome movies. All I can say

I'm a little spaced right now, but I'll think up another recommendation that cannot fail

And it shouldn't have been called Evil. It should have been called 'Erik Ponti pwns the shit out of everything'

I watched a few good movies over the Christmas holiday. By far the best was "Central Station," a Brazilian movie about a boy who loses his mother in a traffic accident and a cranky old spinster who reluctantly agrees to help him look for his father after she sees that he won't make it on his own. The dialog and the development of their relationship during their journey are just fantastic, with none of the clumsy, predictable plot twists that you'd expect from such a common storyline. I'm sure this is going to be one of those movies I'll watch again and again.

I also watched "Eat Drink Man Woman" which had been on my list for awhile but I finally got around to it. It's hard to summarize its plot in a couple sentences, as it consists of loosely related short scenes involving a Taiwanese father and his three daughters. The style was great, especially the cinematography which was beautiful. Watching it made me feel a little happier to be alive. I'm definitely going to look into some more movies from Taiwan.

The other good movie I saw was "The Third Man," a post-WW2 thriller with a ton of awesome and unpredictable plot twists.

I think I may have seen Central Station. If it's the one I'm thinking of it was good. The thing is that I watched highly regarded, obscure movies about 3x a week for over two years, and I've forgotten many of them. I do remember some from Central Station though

Mcat, you may like films by Kar Wai Wong. I don't, but that's not because he's not a good director, I just don't particularly care for his storytelling methods. He is a very talented director, though, and others find that they very much enjoy his storytelling. One thing I remember about him is that he does extremely interesting camera work. Most of the time I found it annoying, but some of the time it was absolutely brilliant.

I personally have a difficult time with Asian cinema since I have difficulty telling the actors apart. I guess that's part of why my favorite Asian films are the ones with very few actors like Dersu Uzala, Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring, and 3 Iron; or ones with very recognizable actors that stand out like Mifune or Nakadai in just about anything (Miyamoto Musashi, Seppuku, Ran, Sword of Doom, etc)

Speaking of not liking directors even though they're talented. David Lynch probably takes the cake for me. I don't like any of his movies except for one, which I love. Straight Story, but that's because it was the only one where he actually didn't do all his weird stuff that makes me dislike all of his other films in the first place. The guy is a superb director, but man I cannot even sit through any of his films other than SS. You couldn't even tell SS was directed by him though because it's just so different, and, uh, normal.

Saw Avatar tn, enjoyed myself, plot was as expected... same Hero With a Thousand Faces story, but the overall message and everything was cool. Nothing too creative but had a good night!

Well titanic isnt really that great of a movie either.. when a really good movie ends up being a blockbuster its somewhat of a fluke. Blockbusters are blockbusters because they have such broad appeal and they dont turn anyone off (this is why animated "kids" movies do so well.) And its pretty hard to make an amazing movie that manages to please everyone..

    edit for zwift

George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino at their best

And an awesome strip/dance scene with Salma Hayek
Umm...the simple act of TELLING me there's a twist is big enough of a spoiler imo. Now I'm going to be looking out for the twist.
    this

and there should be no spoiler warning either because that just tells everyone that there is something to be spoiled.

I've edited my post, please do the same. But i have to keep in the trailer spoiler alert cus everyone watches trailer or read about a movie before watching them =9

Up In The Air is quite good. Not 100 oskar nominations worthy... idk what they were thinking. but a good movie.

Re-watched A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises while waiting for the next Cronenberg film.

Roadhouse kicks a whole lotta ass.
So you click their picture and then you get their money?
  44. #119
wow, book of eli was a hudge letdown. The more I see of denzel washington, the less I like him. Im really glad I just downloaded that shit and didnt go pay to see it. Theres absolutely zero character development in that movie, and the fictional world they created wasnt believable/impressive enough to carry the movie. I mean, it wasnt street kings bad, but it was def a let down.

So I got some time to catch up on movies today.

Hurt Locker was amazing. In all ways.
Fantastic Mr. Fox was amazing. Voice acting was really good and the movie was just warm and enjoyable.
The Invention of Lying was high concept but not that good. Despite his amazing stand up, it kind of made me like Ricky Gervais a little less.

I liked shaun of the dead, but it just doesnt compare to zombieland for me.

Shaun was more slapstick humor, while zombieland was humor based on badassery, similar to pulp fiction.

Two very good movies from my part of the world(Argentina) are:

    1- "Nueve Reinas"
2- "El Secreto de sus Ojos"

BTW, theres a remake of "Nueve Reinas" called "Criminal" if any of you has already seen it. Id like to hear what you think of these movies. They are really good IMO.

I just watched The Hurt Locker, and was extremely disappointed. I suppose its well acted, but it just has no story. It's one of the most frustrating movies I've ever watched because the whole time I was trying to figure out what it was about.

You're wrong, it was an awesome movie. That's basically all they do. There are bombs everywhere and those are the mofos that go out and disarm them. No story needed to depict the lives of these guys. Everyday someone finds a bomb and everyday they go and disarm it.

You have to be kidding me. One of the best cameos of all time. It was such a fun watch while drinking beers with a few buddies. My roommate bought it on DVD and I think we've watched it 5-6 times since.

I know, sorry guys. I was really excited to go see it, but it bores you to tears (or sleep in the people in front of me's case). I really expected a lot more from Tim Burton, but what can you do. Jonny Depp was excellent but thats kind of a given.

Haha agreed. Hope you have more fun with it than I did.

Just watched Flight of the Valkyrie last night for the first time. It's been out for a while, but DAMN is it a good movie. Probably my favorite Tom Cruise movie after Cocktail obv. If you haven't seen it yet, go out and watch it.

I downloaded and watched "Precious" and I really enjoyed it.

Its a story about Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey helping an abused fatass black girl from Harlem.

isnt the movie simply titled "Valkyrie"? The movie where cruise plays a nazi?

I remember being pretty disappointed with this movie. Cruises best film is by far mission impossible, with second place being a tie between tropic thunder and top gun.
