Default ***THE OFFlClAL BRlTlSH WORDS/PHRASES THAT MAKE YOU GlGGLE THREAD***

so i've gotten into this british show called the inbetweeners (very very good show btw), and half the fun is listening to britishisms. i love how much they call each other twats, and when they actually called each other wankers i was like "wow, british people really DO use that word." also the constant use of the word muff makes me giggle. i couldn't stop laughing when one of the characters said he was "knee deep in muff"

recently i learned of the phrase "taking the piss" in the irc.

i guess america-isms are welcome for all you whacky brits

    barmy = crazy

blowsy = similar to bloody as an adjective

double bagger = she's so ugly that not only does she need a bag over her head, but you need a bag over your own head in case hers falls off

Watch this film. It's very awesome and Michael Caine drops some awesome archaic British slang

wrong usage i'm afraid Mr Illa.

you can be "chuffed" about something (meaning happy), but something doesn't "chuff" you.

Chuff also means bum or vagina - so you can say "Up your chuff"

Cockney rhyming slang for 'having a laugh'= 'bubble bath', so that's where it comes from. 'Having a bubble' is a more appropriate saying, not sure where or when you've heard 'having a bath', but I've never heard of it.

I'm glad that show travels well. That is so accurate in depicting what life is like as a teenager in southern england. It cracks me up.

I was going to say it was called aluminium first and you butchered it, but actually it's not quite that simple.

World Wide Words: Aluminium versus aluminum

    Whatever.

I can't believe you don't use spazz in America? It's one of my favourite words!

    Wonky.
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

in the inbetweeners, spazz is only used as slang for an actual mentally handicapped person. in the US, saying 'I'm such a spazz' doesn't necessarily mean that

    pants is my favourite.

The fuck? Do you say trousers or something gay?
  31. #31
i just love the free use of the word cunt round London. Either calling someone a reeking cunthole (in a friendly way) or going on the piss and getting cunted.

Haha I'm gonna start calling my friend cunts.

Oh yeah, that's something I found on my exchange, that people from northern america don't use the phrase "good cunt".

When british people say pants as a general rule they mean underpants, rather than trousers.
  34. #34
yeah american women hate the word cunt. it's 99% of all women's most hated word in the world. my current theory is because they're gay

Pants never means trowsers over here, only underpants, but even then it's very rarely used. In general, we use the term pants to mean rubbish, ie that movie was complete pants = that movie was shit.

And British women tend to hate the word cunt too. My misses gets seriously pissed when I use it around her, whilst I'll call my friends cunts without a second thought. And getting "totally cunted" on a night out is the best use of the word ever.

just means your being a bit wet and need to man up.

So if your mates a bit down about a woman you could say "Come on soppy bollocks, get your pint down you, theres plenty more growler out there"
