Wait, you expect me to take the job when I'm rich? Why the fuck would I do that? I'd take now if I were offered it, and it was walking distance.

Also, I didn't vote for it. I don't remember being asked a question along the lines of "would you prefer English people do take fruit picking jobs?".

Is that your clever way of saying there's no fruit farms within walking distance of where you live?

I'm not a flag shagger. Sorry to disappoint you.

There's one about a mile away as the crow flies, I can see it in the winter when the trees don't block the view. It's probably a three mile walk though, since I have to cross a river. As best I can tell, they haven't been desperately looking for fruit pickers. Certainly my jobcentre would be quick to inform me of such opportunities. And certainly I would consider some summer work there, I just need a bike.

Oh that's right, you voted to make British fishermen prosperous again.
No, I simply voted to leave the EU.

Highlight is when he pledged to be injected with covid on live TV early last year to show it wasn't dangerous. This is Trump-level stupidity.

Oh look it's Dominic Cummings saying more things.

Before we get into this again, just a reminder I don't support Boris. However, I also don't trust Cummings.

Let's see what he's actually got to say.

    1. The government 'failed'
    Like every government since Thatcher.

    2. PM 'not fit for office'
    Like every PM since Thatcher.

    3. Hancock 'should have been fired'
This is fucking brilliant. So should Cummings.

    4. First lockdown delay
Cummings said it was obvious in retrospect... key word - retrospect. He acknowledges himself he should have done more. Balancing the pandemic with economics and education, that's not an easy task. I'll cut Boris slack here.

    5. Bombs, quarantine... and Dilyn
I've always been very critical of Conservative foreign policy, and it's the prime reason they won't ever get my vote. Also corruption, but primarily foreign policy.

The anecdote about the dog is ridiculous and completely irrelevant.

    6. 'Chicken pox parties'
This didn't happen, it never became policy. I would expect this to be discussed. It's a conversation I would expect to happen with experts.

    7. PM 'ignored' second lockdown advice
Again, we have economics and education playing a role here. I definitely do not think the govt got it right, but there were people from all camps making noise. When he did order a lockdown, people use the word "fascism". It's lose-lose.

Dominic Cummings clearly has an agenda. Whether that's to distract the public, or to put pressure on Boris, idk. He's a spin doctor. He knows exactly what he's doing.

Cummings' motivation doesn't change the facts (if these are facts, we still need to see confirmation, but they're certainly plausible allegations given who they're aimed at). It's not like you can say "well, a lot of that's true, but he's only telling us these things 'cause he has an axe to grind; otherwise we never would have heard about it. Ergo, we should ignore it." The motivation of the messenger is irrelevant once the facts are established.

And again you're falling into the same pattern of responses as you do to all the relevations about Boris' various moral transgressions and massive policy fuckups: "well, all politicians are just as bad." To which the only possible response is an equally flippant, "no, they're not." Ultimately, arguing no-one else would have been any better is a lazy argument because it's entirely subjective and there's no way it can be proven or disproven.

The thing is, a lot of these allegations are based on comments made behind closed doors, not intended for public consumption. There will be much more interesting conversations of this kind than what Cummings describes here.

I mean, you're right that it's flippant to just say they're all as bad as each other. But there's a deeper point... it's just an opinion. Dominic says the government failed? That's his opinion, and one you agree with. Dominic says Boris isn't fit for office? Just another opinion, and one you agree with.

Nothing in that list of 7 points struck me as earth shattering. It's gossip politics.

@poop - I think you're being naive. Of all the conversations that go on behind closed doors, you're losing your shit over the lame stuff.

I really don't give a fuck about callous comments when having private discussions with advisors. In fact, I'm more bothered about Cummings being a little snitch.

But taking it seriously is their fucking job.

If I sat on a committee about trans rights at my uni I wouldn't be saying "aha hahaha I can't tell what they are" because there's obv a difference between making a flippant joke or callous remark where nothing's at stake vs doing the same thing when 100k people could die. I mean, maybe not in some people's world, but it's different in mine.

But yeah, w/e, flippant jokes on a forum = not giving a shit if 100k die. Arrgggh and all that.

There's two major problems with the Eurovision Song Contest, the first is it's riddled with politics and everyone hates the UK, and the second is our song is always really fucking shit.

I wouldn't go to see their show, but if they were the random opening act for the band I was going to see, they could actually steal the show.

It's not my cup of tea, but it's a fantastic performance. They've made an art form out of miming. Two rotating upside down drummers. Chewbacca on vocals. If this had qualified for the finals, I'm in no doubt it would have won.

It cracks me up that they're playing trash metal on a guitar, a banjo, and a...Oud? Cittern? Or w/e the fuck that other thing is. Like, only these instruments have the timbre to get the nuances of their music across lol.

Also, imo they didn't make the finals 'cause their music is not very good, and the visual doesn't quite make up for it.

But I never watch Eurovision so can't say for a fact the music needs to be good to win it. Didn't ABBA win one year?

Their music is ok. I like this song, but I've tried listening to more of their stuff and this is as good as it gets. It's not popular music, most people will agree with you that it's not very good. But in a Eurovision final, this would definitely get a lot of public votes across the continent.

Yes ABBA won, it's how they got famous in the first place. Pretty sure it was Waterloo. I don't like ABBA, but I can at least appreciate it's good quality pop music and probably deserved to win, though obviously I say that while having no idea what they were up against that year. I think Cliff Richards has also won it, and din't Whigfield win it with Saturday Night or am I misremembering?

Yeah I didn't mean to imply ABBA were bad, they're certainly musical at least. If it was easy to write ear candy pop music everyone would do it and get rich. And fwiw, Mozart wrote a lot of ear candy so it definitely takes some skill.

Meanwhile, in Hartlepool, they've decided there needs to be a plaque on their monkey statue explaining its origin so that people know it's not racist.

Imagine bringing this up in a meeting, unprompted, and thinking you're not the racist one in society associating monkeys with black people.

Yes I agree, but it's kinda missing the point. Who's the target audience for this plaque? It's not racist people, is it? It's woke idiots who are likely to pull down the statue because they see a monkey and assume it has racist connotations when in fact no such racism exists. Normal people don't see a monkey and think of black people.

I agree. We've come to the point where "woke" people on either side see offense where none is being given or even intended; cf. Andrea Jenkyns and the other flagshaggers about the picture of Lizzy.

No, and I don't suppose all the white people who boo'd were racist either. Some of them probably genuinely think Marcus Rashford is being co-opted by Marxists. Good chance the rest are racist though.

Now all we have to do is tow the Australian continent a few thousand miles closer to the UK and populate it with about 500 million more people, and we won't need to deal with the EU at all anymore! #MEGA #flags

Marcus Rashford isn't the poster boy for English footballers taking the knee. His thing is feeding hungry kids. And it's actually completely possible to oppose the taking of the knee while also thinking Rashford is doing good things.

What is a good reason to oppose taking the knee so that you boo people who are doing it while they represent your country?

    I wouldn't boo it. That's going a bit far.

We've been through this, I'm sure. Taking the knee is a political gesture. People don't want politics infiltrating sport. And it's just a gesture. It's not action. Not like, say, boycotting the World Cup next year in protest against homophobic discrimination would be. But they'll "protest" that by wearing rainbow laces instead of actually taking some form of action.

Let's not forget this gesture gained international significance as a result of a criminal getting killed by American cops. How is that relevant to a European football tournament? People are tired of identity politics, being put into groups and divided from other groups. Taking the knee is a symbol of identity politics. That's why I oppose it.

They're people who are in the public eye and so have a chance to send a political message, and they're using it. Just like a radio show host, a youtuber, or anyone else whose job has a public face. It may not be a football player's job to have a political opinion, but there's nothing in the footballer code of conduct against it.

And don't you think it's telling that the people who don't want politics in sport are the ones who are against the politics being spoken at that time. If a group of players stood up before each game and yelled "MEGA!!", you can bet none of those same people would be booing it. Quite the contrary, they'd be bellowing "Politics in sport! Fuck yeah!"

It's not the politics in sport they don't want, it's the politics in sport that specifically opposes their own politics.

What do you want them to do, go and tear down a statue before every game?

I mean, ok, they could just refuse to play until people stop being racist I guess. But I suppose they think that's going too far. A gesture sends the same message without being so disruptive.

For the same reason it's relevant to pulling down Colston's statue. There is racism in Europe as well, it's basically part of Western culture.

There's only two groups here: the group that want equality and the group that are ok with inequality as long as it benefits them. It's kind of hard to argue you're against racism while at the same time getting annoyed by people protesting against racism.

but there's nothing in the footballer code of conduct against it.
Actually this isn't quite true. Footballers are not generally allowed to make political gestures in games. It's just in the case of taking the knee, the regulatory bodies are permitting it. But whenever England play around Armistice Day, we tend to wear a poppy. This usually requires permission from FIFA as it's considered a political symbol. And this is to honour the war dead, which shouldn't offend anyone.

And don't you think it's telling that the people who don't want politics in sport are the ones who are against the politics being spoken at that time
You're just making this assumption about "people". You're talking to me though, who opposes politics in sport in general, not just whatever suits me. An example is rainbow laces. It's just a stupid gesture that does nothing to promote equality when the same players are preparing to play a world cup where homosexuality is illegal. I oppose discrimination of homosexuals by states. That doesn't mean I want to see footballers wearing pretty coloured boot laces. It means I want to see a boycott of Qatar 2022.

I'm ok with antiracism in football, it certainly has its place. But showing support for a left wing political movement in USA isn't tackling racism.

If a group of players stood up before each game and yelled "MEGA!!", you can bet none of those same people would be booing it
I'm sure some people fit this description but I really do not think it's anywhere near as many as you think. I mean, if a footballer was expressing support for leaving the EU, I'd still be thinking "I don't give a fuck what you think about it mate". And certainly if he was making anti-EU gestures when celebrating a goal, for example, I'd be annoyed. I think most people would be, regardless of one's opinion on the matter.

What do you want them to do, go and tear down a statue before every game?
Well for one, I completely support teams leaving the pitch when fans are making racist chants. And I don't give a fuck what people post on their social media accounts. But making this gesture at every game, in the presence of people who have shown no sign of racism, who is it a message to?

I mean, ok, they could just refuse to play until people stop being racist I guess. But I suppose they think that's going too far. A gesture sends the same message without being so disruptive.
Racism is a social problem. You can't change the way people are. You can change law, you can change national policy, you can change governments, but you can't change human nature.

You have to ask what the purpose of this gesture is. Is it to eradicate racism in society? How is it going to achieve this goal?

It's kind of hard to argue you're against racism while at the same time getting annoyed by people protesting against racism.
American racism, as you acknowledge yourself. This is the European Championships. Why not protest against Brazilian cops while we're at it? Let's take the knee for USA, clench the fist for Brazil, then have a minute's applause for transgender rights, then shout at the sky in protest at China. Then play football.

There's a fuck ton going on in the world that needs fixing. Racism is one of them. People watch football because they want to get away from this kind of shit. People don't want politics rammed down our throats when we just want to get behind the national team and celebrate football.

I see we're back to BLM is Marxist again. Marcus Rashford is reading Lenin during halftime and the rest of the boys are pledging allegiance to Mao.

There's no racists in the crowd, and yet there's people booing them for taking a knee. One might argue that the reason they're taking a knee is because there are people who sit in the crowd who will boo them for taking a knee. Never mind the ones booing at their TV sets.

As I already said, there's plenty of racism in Europe to protest against. Don't try to pretend it only exists in America.

But ok, you don't like political statements made before a sporting game. That's fine. At least you're not booing them like a twat.

You keep talking about Rashford. What has he got to do with this?

Whether you accept it or not, this is about BLM.

There's no racists in the crowd, and yet there's people booing them for taking a knee. One might argue that the reason they're taking a knee is because there are people who sit in the crowd who will boo them for taking a knee.
I mean this is nonsense. So they're not protesting racism, they're protesting people protesting them protesting racism? Did I get that right?

The longer this goes on, the more people will boo. That's not because more people suddenly got racist. It's because more people are getting sick of identity politics, especially at sporting events.

As I already said, there's plenty of racism in Europe to protest against. Don't try to pretend it only exists in America.
There's plenty of other shit happening in Europe. Why is racism worse than, say, burglary? Can we have footballers protesting burglaries please?

Rashford's the only England player whose name I know. I'm using him as a shorthand for black England footballers.

No, you're making it about BLM because there's been an effective smear campaign against them by guess who? Racists.

"Rashford" is not trying to promote BLM the Marxist revolutionary organisation by taking a knee. He's promoting equality. I guarantee you neither he nor the other Rashfords on the team are reading Mao at halftime.

Let me reiterate what I said: If no-one was upset by people protesting against racism it would be because there was no racist structure they were trying to uphold. The fact that they boo suggests they prefer a racist system to an egalitarian one. It's the racists amongst the people booing who are the very reason the Rashfords are protesting. Ironic isn't it?

I don't know that burglary is on the same level as racism. Maybe that's just me. But sure, if they wanted to protest burglary, that's their right too I suppose. I bet some of them would even come out against things like kids going hungry. Fucking commies.

This is kinda what it felt like. Do you really not realise this is itself questionable when it comes to racism? You seem to be happy for players to make political gestures that oppose racism, yet you're lazily using Marcus Rashford as your go-to footballer to represent black England players.

FYI, they're all kneeling, the white players too.

No, you're making it about BLM because there's been an effective smear campaign against them by guess who? Racists.
Are you actually serious here? It was BLM that got this thing going, and the footballers have been quite clear that they are making this gesture to show support for BLM. Certainly that's how it started.

I guarantee you neither he nor the other Rashfords on the team are reading Mao at halftime.
I never once suggested that anyone reads Mao or Marx. This is you saying these things.

And stop calling black footballers "Rashfords" while trying to take moral high ground in a discussion about racism.

The fact that they boo suggests they prefer a racist system to an egalitarian one.
This is based wholly on your interpretation of what this gesture means. To other people, it means something different. It doesn't matter if you agree with them or not. What you can't do is apply your thinking to other people.
