idk if people still use this nickname. If it's been cast into the bin of history, no that doesn't upset me. Neither does the phrase itself upset me. It's nice to not get upset about silly things.

I don't read it every day because I don't want my brain to turn to mush. I do leaf through it from time to time to see what the latest outrage is all about. I also often hear about the latest outrage from third parties referring to the DM.

Did they slash energy bills between Jan. 1 2021 and the start of the RU-UA war? No.

I guess you also missed the bit where they said they could reduce VAT on energy once they were out of the evil EU. Which they could have done while in the EU, and still haven't done anyways.

Also, the Frencies capped fuel rises at 4%. Ours are 54%. So leaving the EU helped us manage our energy prices how? That's the point of the ad, we could do what we wanted if it weren't for the evil EU. Well, now we're out and it hasn't helped us. So another promise turns out to be fos.

Boris and his chancellor ("finance minister" to you commoners) were just both given fines for breaking lockdown rules. The Tories have sent the Right Honourable MP from the Monkees out to defend them. Judging from the comments, it has not gone over well.

A good chunk will still vote Tory though, through blind loyalty. I've never understood those that just vote for the same party every time and somehow justify incompetence and clear corruption in their head. Anybody that has unwavering loyalty to a party is a fool.
  16. #2191
That's true, a good chunk don't pay attention and vote the same way no matter what. I reckon it's about 60% of voters who are virtually un-swayable. It's the other 40% I'm banking on. Hearing a lot of people who voted Tory in '19 saying there's no way they'll vote Tory next time after the last three years' shitshow.

It'd probably help if people had more (real) options than us v them. I'm sure it's easy to identify with one and consider the other option to be the polar opposite, and never even consider switching no matter what happens. Kind of like swapping sports teams.
  19. #2194
I think there'd be a lot less of that if we went to proportional representation. A party with 40% of the popular vote should not have an overwhelming parliamentary majority, as happened here in the last election.

Having coalition gov'ts as the norm would force the gov't to be more moderate, and we wouldn't get these extreme policies pushed through by a gov't trying to convince racists that brown people are after their cookies.

We already use imperial for a fair few things. Miles, pints, feet, inches, stones, I buy my weed in imperial units, and I buy my bananas by the bunch. I'll use whichever system is appropriate and makes most sense to me. If we're talking short distances, imperial is more natural. If something is 24 feet away, it's four of me. If it's 24 meters away, it's a bit more than 12 of me. Roughly 14 at a guess. I like feet and inches more because I'm a nice round figure in imperial height at 6 feet. If I were a lanky 2 meters I'd probably like meters more. Either way, I'm drinking my cider by the pint and buying my weed by the quarter ounce.

Not sure what the fuss is with metric vs imperial. Just use both.

Funny thing was when I was buying weed, you talked about it in imperial, but everything was actually done in metric.
Like if you wanted to by a quarter ounce, you asked for a quarter-bag, and you were given one. But the one who sold you the quarter-bag measured it out as 7 grams, and if you wanted to verify you weren't swindled, you'd also measure it with a gram scale.

    Same in UK?
You can find any pattern you want to any level of precision you want, if you're prepared to ignore enough data.
  36. #2211
Actually this is true. My guy weighs it out in grams. And I get 7 grams, which is actually slightly under. An ounce is roughly 28.3 grams (always be suspicious of someone who knows how many grams in an ounce). And yeah if I verified (I don't unless it's not my regular guy), my scale tells me in grams. But it wasn't always like this. I'm old enough to remember when digital scales were rare. Back in the 90s, weed was usually weighted using "pans", which is slang for a balance scale. And a 2p coin weighs the same as a quarter ounce, so that would be used for the counterbalance. That's distinctly imperial!

Alcohol is somewhat ambiguous too, because I buy it from the supermarket in liters, but I pour it into a pint glass.

We absolutely do not use km here though. All road distances are in miles, speed is mph, people think about distances from town to town in miles, we are very imperial when it comes to travel. Shorter distances, feet and yards, or meters, both work fine. The yard is somewhat rare, given it's close to a meter. I don't use yards in common language, once we're past 25 feet or so I kind of switch to meters because I start thinking about a 100m running track.

We're extremely anti-imperial when it comes to temperature though. We kind of resist Fahrenheit as an "Americanism", there's a certain sense of "Britishness" about Celsius. Weird really. I always used to think Fahrenheit was a nonsense scale, but it actually has mathematical applications that make it better than Celsius in some instances. iirc, it works better with degrees, that is, it works better with the number 360 than it does 10. But still, for common usage, Celsius is king.

I don't know in what context you'd want to marry a temperature scale with a circle, but whatever.

People just like what they're used to. I grew up using feet and inches for height, and I still don't know how many cm tall I am. Around when I was 10 yrs old, Canada went metric. They started putting both mph and km/h on the road signs. After two years they took off the mph but by that time you kind of had it figured out. No-one now screams to go back to miles.

The thing is that a base 10 system is demonstrably easier to work with than a base 12 or base 60. That's why 99% of the countries in the world use metric. I can see someone resisting it if everyone is familiar with imperial and doesn't want to change. But, going to base 10 and then going back to base 12 or 60 would be supremely retarded.

Personally I think 10 hours in a day, 100 minutes per hour, and 100 seconds per minute would be great. "Hey man, I'll meet you at 7.5329 o'clock. We'll have 2.4671 hours till midnight when the bar closes."

idk but it turns out that a one degree rise in Fahrenheit corresponds to a 1 part in 10000 change in the volume of mercury. I can't imagine that's a coincidence.

    Seems it is.

Farenheit based 0 deg. on the freezing point of ammonium chloride in water, 32 on the freezing point of water, and 96 as body temperature. All nicely dividing into 32.

If that 1 in 10000 is precise then I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is a case where the historians might be wrong. If it's roughly 1 in 10000 that's a reasonable enough coincidence for me.

Well, you don't need to be able to actually measure volume that accurately if you can do the calculations on paper. Fahrenheit the dude was apparently a very precise person, as precise as he could be given the technology available to him. But I've watched one youtube video on this subject.

There's no way you accidentally stumble on an exact 1 to 10000 ratio per degree, not when the element in question is the very element used to measure temperature. We're talking astronomical probabilities here. Assuming, that is, the ratio is exact. Or at least, exact by the standards of the day.

I haven't heard anything or looked into it recently, but Fahrenheit's papers were well preserved, IIRC, and all his methodology and reasoning is still around to be read.

IIRC, his reasons for choosing the scale he chose were pure hoodoo / non-scientific stuff. Like, he felt that certain numbers made more sense, so he tweaked his scale to use those numbers.

Again, IIRC, his first temperature scale was upside down... having high temps for cold and low temps for hot.
I think this was commonly accepted as proper at the start of his career, though.

Note: wikipedia verifies the top 2, but not my 3rd point.
You can find any pattern you want to any level of precision you want, if you're prepared to ignore enough data.

Seems mad to have the scale upside down like that, given temperature has a minimum but not a maximum. That's kinda obvious too when you understand that temperature is the kinetic energy of molecules. A molecule can always vibrate more, but once it's not vibrating, it can't vibrate less. So having a scale that has a finite upper bound but practically infinite lower bound, that's hoodoo.

Probably a bad use of the word "molecule" there, the pedant in me is thinking every molecule has a maximum temperature before it breaks down into elements and then subatomic particles. But the gist of that post still holds.

You're getting Fahrenheit mixed up with Celsius mojo. As in the people. Celsius's original scale had 0 as the boiling point of water, and 100 as freezing. This was apparently done because it avoids negative numbers in common weather usage. It's never going to be hotter than the boiling point of water.

Yeah it was Celcius who had the scale upside-down, Farenheit was upside-up but picking numbers out of his ass.

    Ahh. TY. My bad.

It remains that Fahrenheit's choice of numbers and scale of his system were based on weird things and the fact that a scale with 64 divisions between important points is easy to manufacture.

@ong: technically the lowest state of vibration is non-0, due to Quantum Mechanics. I mean, absolute 0 is a theoretical limit, not an actually achievable or measurable thing. Nothing in the universe is (or could be proven to be) at 0 K.

It doesn't change the fundamental point you made, though. There is a lowest energy state, and that sets a hard limit, whereas there is no upper energy state, if you accept that the form of matter-energy will change as the state-energy increases. Not unlike ice melting into water, then boiling into steam, really.

I mean, there is an upper limit in the sense nothing can be hotter than the big bang singularity, but it's so ludicrously high a number that it might as well be limitless.

The old Queenie is celebrating 70 years of mooching off the British public.

Boris was there, and the crowd showed their love for the partying PM by calling out "Booo-ris!"

    I thought I heard otherwise.

Big kerfuffle going on in the UK right now. Gov't signed a deal with Rwanda to send our asylum-seekers there (in a move of dubious legality, no surprises there).

Human rights lawyers tried an injunction to get flight stopped. Failed. Appealed the ruling. Also failed. But, individual cases slowly dropping off the move list because of lawyers. Gov't insists flight will go ahead tonite. Currently down to 9 refugees scheduled for the flight last I heard. Might be zero by the time it takes off. Flight is costing UK taxpayers £500k. Definitely value for money.

Oh, and just in. European Libtard Court of Human Rights has granted an injunction to stop one of the refugees from being deported. And then there were 8. Twitter full of gammon raging about goddamn Eurolibtards with their "human rights!"

In other breaking international law news, the UK gov't is about to put forth a bill to scrap the Northern Ireland protocol (or at least the parts they don't like), in direct contravention of our Brexit agreement with EU. EU threatening trade sanctions if it goes ahead. Goddamn Eurolibtards, holding us to impossible standards like keeping our agreements! etc. etc.

And now there are zero. Flight to Rwanda not going to happen. I assume we're still stuck with the bill though...

MEGAtard gammon now screaming that we need to leave the goddamn undemocratic European Court of Human Rights. The one set up by... (checks notes)...Winston Churchill.

This is fucking hilarious. Now I know how Oskar felt when ya'llquaeda stormed the Capitol.

I can't belive this government is still in power. The Rwanda idea is scandalous and brainless in equal measure. The Liz Truss appearance on GMB was yet another embarrassing interview: James O'Brien has also been great in articulating how disgusting and stupid this idea is/was.

How long are these idiots going to continue?

Me neither. They have been complete shit from Johnson on down. It's hard to think of one cabinet member who isn't a joke. Vote for a clown get a circus, as the saying goes.

Yeah I love James. Also, Nick Abbott does the weekends on LBC and is hilarious on this kind of stuff.

What I also don't get is why our judges didn't stop the plane, at least temporarily, so there could be a proper hearing on legality. The European court argued that if it turned out the policy was illegal it would be pretty hard to find those people in Rwanda to bring them back.

Just a reminder that "gammon" is a racist term. I know people who use that word like to argue it isn't, because nobody actually admits to racism, but it literally refers to the colour of a white person's skin when they're angry.

It's like if I said something to a black man and he said "that's racist" and I said "no it's not" and said it again, he's the asshole not me.

    Right?

If I were to call a fat ugly Inuit woman an "Eskimoo" is that racist?

Nah, because it only applies to fat ugly Inuit women, not all Inuit.

I mean that's not the best example because Eskimo is an ethnic term that most people accept it distasteful. So "Eskimoo" is clearly an ethnic slur. "Gammon" is different. But we're still arguing that because "gammon" only applies to angry right wing white people, that it's not racist. But it's still a slur based on the colour of someone's skin. I don't see how it's even open to debate. It's clearly racist.

Don't use the word in this context.

Or use it, I don't care, but if you do, just don't pretend to be anti-racist.

If there was a Black or Asian person who was vociferously nationalistic to the point of being openly racist I would have no problem calling them gammon too.

You have more right to be upset about being called a bowl of strawberry ice cream than they do about being called gammon.

I'm not upset by any insult. I'm discussing the hypocrisy of being anti-racist while using racist terms.

Nobody uses the word "gammon" to describe nationalist black people. That's because black people don't go gammon coloured when ranting about immigrants. You can call a black person gammon if you want, but it's not much different to calling a white person chocolate face.

I'm with ong on this one. Calling someone gammon is racist. We should totally give hell to any and all black or asian people calling white people that, after they've enslaved and oppressed white people for a few centuries.
  75. #2250
Ok so it's only possible to be racist to someone who has been oppressed for longer than they've been alive. I'm assuming that's what your sarcasm implies. Racism against white people is impossible because they've not been oppressed for centuries by black people. So let's oppress them, right? Then maybe in a few centuries it's actual racism. But not now.

Racism is discrimination or insulting someone based on ethnicity or skin colour. There's no caveats beyond that. Japanese people haven't been oppressed by white people for centuries. Does that make it impossible for a white person to be racist to a Japanese person? Of course not.

We should totally give hell to any and all black or asian people
Why single out black people and Asians? Anyone using this term to describe a white person flushed in the face is being racist.

You're the one playing identity politics here.
