lol at eagles being wild card and finishing 2nd in division. in terms of strength of division, i think nfc east is arguably 2nd toughest in the nfl, behind AFC south (based on last year). i would say its up in the air between AFC north and NFC east.

Make a prediction then instead of bringing the hate on mine. Also I agree with you about the NFC East being one of the strongest divisions, but I don't see how that means Philly isn't going to get the wildcard.

i knew you would say that. i picked the giants to miss the playoffs like 4 months ago, and i stand by that pick. and the eagles just flat out suck balls. fwiw, i think most of your other picks are good. divisions like NFC west and south are too bad and inconsistent, respectively, to make good picks.

I think the NFC East is probably the hardest division to pick this year. You have the Cowboys who are clearly the best team in that division and should win it (but doesn't mean they will). But then I could see any of the other three teams finishing second. I think Philly is gonna be good this year but we'll see.

if the eagles land in the cellar again this year i will eat my hat.

    it's just not gonna happen.

NFC East = Cowboys > Eagles > Giants > Redskins

G-men lost the 2 main reasons they won the super bowl (Strahan/Umenyiora), they will be mediocre. The Cowboys will have another impressive regular season and then lose round 1 of the playoffs...again...hahaha...12 years since playoff win. Eagles always have a good chance to win with McNabb/Reid/Westbrook and it just varies based on how good the other NFC East teams are. Redskins have new coaches/new offense. The learning curb will kill them this year (and so will their divisional mates) and they finish last...I should know I am a Redskins fan

as always, i love the mcnabb hate.

if he stays healthy (which he did last year, though he was hampered still) he will be a top 6 or 7 QB. book it, haters. he's one of the least intercepted QB's playing, by far.

he's the 2nd best QB in the division, and still has the skills to be the best in it.

The Eagles finished 8-8 last year despite ranking in the top 10 in both offense and defense (yards). It's extremely rare for a team with those kinds of rankings to finish out of the playoffs.

Essentially, the team's problems last year were threefold:
    1. Poor offensive performance in the red zone.
    2. Lack of turnovers on defense.
    3. Poor special teams play.

A Donovan McNabb two years removed from his ACL injury and a healthy LJ Smith should bolster the red zone offense.

Defensively, they added one of the best defensive playmakers in the NFL in Asante Samuel. They bolstered the pass rush with Chris Clemons, who quietly had 8 sacks last year as a part time player for a bad Oakland team.

They've added special teams contributors like Rocky Boiman, Kris Wilson, and Dan Klecko. Furthermore, they drafted two rookie returners in DeSean Jackson and Quinton Demps, both of whom have taken returns to the house in the preseason.

They also have the best player in the division in Brian Westbrook.

The Redskins have given Jason Campbell yet another offensive system to learn. I think Jim Zorn is a good quarterbacks coach. But I don't have much faith in a 55 year old first time head coach. Look at the performance of most coaches in the NFL once they creep toward their mid or late 50s, let alone first timers. They're also relying upon a plethora of rookie wide receivers to complement a declining Santana Moss and they've lost Gregg Williams at the helm of the defense.

As for the Giants, I don't expect Eli to recreate the run he made at the end of last season, where his hot streak allowed the Giants to emerge out of a mediocre NFC. Also, their dominant pass rush has been hamstrung by the losses of Strahan and Osi. Obviously last year bought Tom Coughlin a lot of credibility in the locker room, but I don't see them as having the talent for lightning to strike twice.

The Cowboys are probably the most talented team in the division. Football Outsiders/Pro Football Prospectus, probably the best independent football analysts out there, predict them to crash and burn. I don't see that, not with the players they have on both sides of the ball. However, I don't see them making any kind of deep run with a guy like Wade Phillips at the helm, unless Jason Garrett takes over the team.

In the AFC, I still see the Patriots and Colts as the cream of the crop, with the Chargers nipping at their heels. The Patriots will probably come back to Earth a bit-their offense will still be explosive, but I think age and injuries on defense will take their toll (particularly in the secondary).

    "If he stays healthy"

The ability to stay healthy in professional football is a massively important attribute for a player, especially in a position like QB where you can't just plug another guy in the system. If you are injured and can't get on the field, you can't contribute, and you're worthless (actually less than worthless, since you're taking up a roster spot) to the team. Most fans don't understand this.

Speaking of plugging guys into the system at QB, the Eagles seem to do that quite well. Every QB that plays there does extremely well. I remember a few years back their second and third stringer were playing well and winning games-- off the top of my head, AJ Feeley and Koy Detmer maybe? Then more recently, Jeff Garcia lit it up there.

I think McNabb is overrated, Reid is underrated, and Westbrook is hugely underrated.

    Per Profootballtalk.com:

    --

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that, from this point forward, Chad Johnson will be known as Chad Ocho Cinco.

Per the release: “Effective today, the Bengals begin the process of listing the former Chad Johnson as Chad Ocho Cinco for all club business, per the legal change of his surname effected in Florida. The list of appropriate changes will include Ocho Cinco wearing his new surname on the back of his jersey for Sunday’s season opener at Baltimore.”

So there you have it. On Sunday, Ocho Cinco will make his first official appearance.

UPDATE: The team’s official roster has been changed to reflect Ocho Cinco’s presence.

    --

    Awesome.

the Skins homers on FTR are without a doubt the most irrational homers here

They think Jason Campbell is the greatest QB in history and that the Skins are destined to win the Super Bowl every year.

passing yards WAS = -8. Nearing the end of the half.

The Redskins have been lolbad in the preseason and more importantly, week 1 now. 13-0 doesn't even begin to explain how badly washington is getting thrown around right now.

so I went to the grocery store and since i've been back i've been able to watch 3 plays of the pit vs hou game.

for starters it's 7-0 pit (puke), and schcabub gets sacked on what looked to be a terribly drawn up play.

i go do a few things blah blah

schauvbahbub get's sacked again on what looked to be a terribly excecuted play

    blahbalbhblah

pit has the ball and hines ward is open for a 75 yard pass.

fortunately that last one was called back, but this looks like a rout, and cleveland is going to be put into a must win next week when they are already down a game in the division.

damn fine draw run by the steelers there, m williams either completely blew his run-stop responsibilities, or thats how the play was drawn up. anyway williams to the outside, the tackle marvel smith just pushed him outside, and the rb just hit that massive hole between the end and tackle and had a couple blockers in perfect position for 6.

i never said the game was over, just that the lions were getting pummeled. at 21-0, they were.

side note, most games are basically over when there's a 3 TD differential, particularly in the pros.

Man i need one of those packages where I get to watch all the games, but from what I've seen of this buffalo seattle game it's more of the same.

    M. Lynch looks GOOD. great cuts, great power, great vision. very crisp. same with their return man.. roscoe parrish? passing game is crisp. everybody.. particularly the defense looks tough and like they want to HIT. they are HITTING and seattle just looks... disinterested. was going to say soft but i can't call a holmgren coached team soft. they'll come around.. disinterested seems like a better word for now.

Joe Thomas, Browns LT, is probably the best in the business right now

the line is the most important thing in a team, both offensive and defensive. most teams seem to either forget or not know this

heh, was just going to make a post that mentioned him.

Kellen Winslow is a man. Just watch the guy, he has such perfect form. Shields off the defender from the ball with his body, goes out and GETS the ball, fans his hands out and his hands are so soft. Watch sometimes.. anytime the ball hits Winslow's hand it DOESN'T move, doesn't wabble around. It's beautiful. He doesn't shy away from contact either. He's always putting a helmet or shoulder or stiff-arm on somebody. I think he's our best player.

He's one of our most important players too. The one player we CAN'T afford to lose is Joe Thomas. That guy is a beast, especially sealing off the QB's blind-side on passing plays. If he goes down, two positions (LT and RT) are badly downgraded. I'm going on the assumption that they'd slide Schaffer back over to the left side (where he played 2 years ago).

But yeah, I'm very high on Joe Thomas. I was pumped when we drafted him over Peterson last year (I don't even think Quinn was in the picture @ #3), and I've only become happier and happier at the decision.

Vikings @ GB tonight, should be a great game. I'll probably be really focusing on this game and semi-watch DEN/OAK after.

Any other year I'd probably be pulling for GB, but now I'd love to see the Vikings slap them around a bit. Would make for great entertainment.

The Raiders are a mess of a football team. Too many head-cases, a clown of an owner, horrible relationship between head coach and said owner, etc. You have to figure though, sooner or later, all those high draft picks are going to translate into some wins! I'm predicting later.

    GO PACK!

I hate to be right, but I was. It never ceases to amaze me how the signing of free agents makes the press go apeshit over a team, when the reality is football is a team sport and a team of good football players playing together win every time. The Vikings spent more money than I will see in my lifetime in the offseason, and everyone drinks the koolaid on how good they are. The Packers are 13-3, are essentially the same team except for their messy split with their 39 year old legend, and suddenly they are not even going to make the playoffs . Then they play the game ... GOD I LOVE BEATING THE VIQUEENS! FEELS SO GOOD!!!! ARogers looked great, the team has some things to work on, but they are picking up where they left off.

    Bring on the Lions!

I am a charger fan. No excuse for our bad defense but wow the game was handed to to donks. Pretty awesome how we try to challenge a play and then there are "technical difficulties" and therefore the ruling stands...

YEAH Broncos. We didn't deserve the win.. but We'll take it.

Fjuanl, if you're putting quotes around the words "Technical difficulties" in some sort of suggestion to argue that Mike Shanahan cheated by flipping the big switch, you're amazingly wrong.

The NFL outsources everything official to a third party department that checks, and re-checks their equipment prior to a game. No one that even looks like a broncos fan/player goes anywhere near that stuff.

I am pretty dissapointed in Hocules though. The guy normally calls a really solid game.

Lots of holding on both sides, lots of pass interference on both sides, (That call on the Broncos Safety when it looked like it was getting out of hand and the chargers might win it was the only good call of the night IMO) The INT and the Fumble were both terrible.

But when it comes time for review, Hocules made the right call. If the whistle blows the play dead, there is no scenario in the rulebook that gives the other team the ball. He made the mistake, and he even admidted it. The INT might cost him a spot in the post-season though. Which is sad, becuase he refs quite well.

Anyway. If the Broncos need 2 botched calls a game to get to the post season they wont. AND if it takes 2 botched calls a game to keep the charges from getting to the playoffs they WILL make the playoffs.

It'll all even out by December.

    See you then Fjuanl.

it actually appears that whistle or not that type of "empty-handed" fumble is dead when the ball hits the ground anyways

Really? I thought it was the whistle that did it to ya.

    Where did you find that?

Never read any stickies or announcements
The Browns defense is actually looking pretty stout today. I'm impressed.

The offense you say? what's that? oh, 0 points.

So basically I hate life right now. I mean I try to be optimistic about this team but at this point, I don't see how any reasonable person doesn't think we are in a race w/ the Rams and the Dolphins for the #1 pick next year. I mean I'm about to fucking snap, I've been watching my team get crushed every week for the past decade, it fucking wears on you. Week 2 and the season is already over, kill me now.

    Matt Millen Sucks.

Until he leaves, you're in for more and more years.

Could be worse.. You could have Ghonnoreah.

What you and the rest of detriot should do is Organize Wildbob. Like not buy tickets.. Or you could wear "Matt Millen is a Homo" shirts all over Detriot.

don't do stupid shit though, like Buy tickets and then walk out at half time.

Or buy tickets and show up to the game with signs that read "Matt Millen sucks"

    That really defeats the purpose.

Has anyone noticed they seem to be doing a TON less highlights of other games while your watching one. Use to be like every small break in the action and they would show something from another game. Now you see like 2 a half at the most. Starting to piss me off.

And I miss the old halftime shows, nothing but highlights. Now they speed through the scores and show maybe 2 or 3 highlights. Then I gotta listen to the talking heads analyze the game I have been watching . I WAS WATCHING!!! I could care less what the moron Collinsworth thinks about the damn 1st half.

Browns still the Steelers bitches. LOL

    Go Steelers.

Also, the chiefs and the bengals are just HORRIBLE. I had a hard time even watching any of KC's game. But it was kind of like driving by an accident, you didn't want to look but just couldn't help it.

Another Week, another win for the PACK . Rodgers looked great, Favre looked his age. Management made the right choice.

BRING ON THE COWBOYS! It will be refreshing to play them in Green Bay for once. I honestly can't remember the last time they were in Lambeau. Each year the schedule somehow always had them playing in Texas Stadium.
