Looking ridiculous is part of the fun! You get all of the odd looks and different treatment without any of the self-confidence that might come with actually wanting a manly slug on your upper lip.

Sadly I don't think I'll be taking part this year as I'm still in the middle of moving countries and I doubt I can befriend would-be sponsors fast enough, even without a dirty mustache coming in.
