Default look out for AntiVirus Soft

this is a rogue AV program that just installed itself on my computer. i just spent the last 2 hours removing it. it tries to get you to purchase it and claims like everything on your comp is infected and wont let you open anything. i was downloading music from vuze, which i thought was pretty safe. anyone had problems with it before?

Sounds like you ran into the XP Antivirus malware. Have fun trying to remove all the pieces. Go and download Spybot, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I have had good success removing the infection with those 2 programs. Although it depends on how far the infection has gone. You can also do some google searches for XP Antivirus malware and you will find some articles that may have some more advanced removal techniques.

Another easier option if you have good backups is to reformat and reinstall windows. Quickest and most pain free way of getting rid of this bitch.

    I am Queens Blvd.
I just finished deleting a virus exactly like this from my friend's computer. It wasn't too hard to get it off the computer. You're going to have to delete the registry keys and ish.
That's how winners play; we convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

Yeah, I removed something similar from a mate's XP computer.. The first, most useful step I took was to disable it from starting up with the computer.

Go Start -> Run -> type in 'msconfig'

Tab over to Startup, find the malware, and de-tick it.

It may give you shit saying that your startup config service is broken, but that's just the malware trying to bs you, drag that crap out of the way and ignore it.. This should give you enough breathing space to tackle the little cunt

had something like this with vista, too lazy to reformat, ran avg daily instead, eventually a windows update appeared to take care of it

Here's a lil primer to help in the future.

DL Malwarebytes and up date it regularly. They often have up to 5 or 6 updates in a day.

    DL and update superantispyware.

    DL ccleaner.

IF you have mcafee AV, get rid of it and DL one of the better AV programs. I use avira as it uses less resources than some others. The free versions better than any mcafee or pre 2010 norton AV's.

IF you get a piece of malware, MBAM and SAS will fix it most of the time. But if you don't keep them updated you run the chance of the malware blocking them from updating.

I'd also say to run a hijackthis log, but I'm not sure I will see the post to help with that. But there are other forums that will interpret your HJT log.

Also, check out bleepingcomputer dot com site for the latest malware threats and fixes.

Another good program to use and it's free is http://www.safer-networking.org. It's helped me a couple of time to remove garbage. This is a open source program and they have a great forum to help you out.
