    Talking Living the Dream

I was informed by my boss that I should consider any long-term plans I have for the position as worth pursuit. That is, there have been many ideas I've had about this position and I had to categorize them as short-term or long-term based on what I thought I could accomplish this semester. I was just told to pursue my long-term goals as well.

She told me that getting through HR is a bit of a process, but that it has been started. They are preparing to offer me a contract.

    YIPPEEEEE!! WOOHOOOOOO!! HOORAY!

    ***
I have been working part time (lol 37.5 hr weeks) as the physics demonstration guy at Washington University in St Louis.

During nearly all of the physics lectures, there is a demonstration performed to show the students what's going on. I am the guy who's responsible for creating and setting up demonstrations each day. There is a full schedule of experiments which are already used, so it's not like I had to come up with a ton of demos right off the bat. It is part of my job to keep and maintain the equipment needed for the demos. As such, my office is an enormous room with large cabinets along the walls. The cabinets are full of awesome scientific equipment. I have the liberty to order any additional equipment I may need (unsure of my actual budget, though).

I found a 4-year-old, never-been-used Squire Stratocaster (electric guitar) in my office, as well as a tuner, whammy bar, soft case and practice amp. I also have a refrigerator, microwave, and sink in my office.

I have no one micromanaging any portion of my job. I have my own helium cylinder and access to liquid Nitrogen at $0.17 per liter.

    Aw.

I wouldn't move to America anyway, but playing physics is indeed a cool job that even I'd be happy to do. Although being an assistant would probably mean more cleaning of apparatus than the blowing up of things.

The legality of weed is not the single most important factor to consider when considering emigrating.

    Even for me.

I would consider the attractiveness of the women to be of more signficant value. Thus, I'm more likely to move to Japan or China.

In a couple of states, but not Missouri or Illinois.

I'm pretty sure the university would frown on this, at any rate. They don't even allow cigarette smoking in the parking lot.

Proto-American. Don't sell yourselves short. You guys made America, after all, and that's something.

This is really not helping your resume. Besides, even if your standards are too high to be justified by your personality, St Louis is big enough to have plenty of women (or men, or whatever) who fit your standards. We even have thriving Asian populations. In fact, our international community is quite varied.

All the college campuses I've been on had plenty of lovely people representative of a wide international community. Wash U is no different.

the job sounds legit. i remember often walking past the chem teacher's office who doesnt teach but instead is just in charge of the lab and thinking "that must be the best job for any chemist who doesn't prefer research to have".

i bet to an experimental scientist, demonstrating experiments with the potential awe of the student audience is like being the guy who whips his dick out in a class called "looking at big dicks 101".

In any case, MMM, you worked for it, you've earned it, I can't wait til you start manufacturing whatever crazy strong drug you can make with liquid nitrogen, gaseous helium, and an electric guitar.

I can't thank you enough for the time you took to show me github. Ultimately, I didn't end up taking that anywhere, but preparing to do so solidified in my mind that grinding code was probably going to burn me out in a few months.

That may not be what either of us had as a goal for our little github session, but the outcome was better than we had hoped.

You're not alone in supporting me through the long dark of unemployment.

I have to thank Eric and gmml for offering me work here at FTR when I was down and out. They didn't have to do that. I didn't respect that enough at the time. Sorry that things could have been more maturely handled on my end.

I don't want to make a list, but spoonitnow deserves a special thank you for taking a personal interest in my well-being, even while we were disagreeing about his tone in the commune. Spoony is the right kind of gangsta. He may piss me off; I may piss him off, but he isn't blind to the deeper respect. Neither am I.

    Bach beat me to it

It comes on slow, but the last 30 seconds gives a full body rush that makes the follicles on the top of your head tingle.

The teeth was a joke, I don't think we have particularly bad teeth. Different approach to you guys with your obsession with perfectly straight teeth though. But in general I wouldn't say British girls are hot.

i wouoldnt say the chinese are hot, most of the hot chinese girls are part american part chinese ....not to say that they dont exist as there are exceptions to the rule in every country, but i would rather thailand, japan, and even korea before china if i was goign for hottest girls. Philipino chicks are hot too.

I have my contract. It's a fair amount less than I was expecting, but I'm not going to be uncomfortable with the salary.

I'm expected to work 37.5 hours a week. Less than 40 hr work week!

This semester's final grades are due tomorrow, and I have an open schedule until Jan 8th. I can go in to work if I have something to do, but I have no obligation to take less than a 3 week break for the holiday season.

The perks of this job are so great! It's a bit surreal. I can't help feeling jealous over this job when I describe it, then I realize that it's MY job. lol.

Check out what I'm doing right now:

That's liquid oxygen in the adjustable gap between 2 permanent magnets. The gap is ~4 mm for scale.

I got lucky with the camera to be aligned right along one of the magnet faces.

EDIT: and apparently I took that picture tomorrow, so there's another perk.

Nice, post more pictures of your experiments! Or videos of your experiments. Or videos of freezing stuff with liquid nitrogen and breaking them.
