I'm going on a 2 week crash diet

    Default I'm going on a 2 week crash diet

    studying for the bar made me fat (I'm thinking it was all the soda I drank).

    I 6'4" about 195 right now which is the fattest I've ever been. I realize that doesn't sound fat to many of you, but for my body type (manute bolesque), it is. I want to get down to between 180-185 for when I go to Belize in 2 weeks.

    I am willing to take reasonable wagers on whether or not I can do it.

    you can probably drop 10lbs in a week but 2-3 lbs will only be real weight (see: fat)

    going to diet soda over time will get rid of it, but not in time for your trip (just ask me, I lost 30lbs in the last 9 months)

    I don't like diet soda, so I'm just not gonna drink soda at all.

    I've actually gained a pound since yesterday, but I still think I can lose 10.

    But I also doubt that when you put your hand around your wrist that your thumb can almost touch the second knuckle of your middle finger.

    I know some people don't believe you can be "big boned" but I do. My body frame is not meant to pack on lots of weight or muscle (I spent a year in college trying to pack on weight/muscle and although I got strong, I never got big). I'm betting yours is.

    wow about the knuckle comment. I'm about 6'2-3ish with relatively big hands (i'd say normal for my height) and i can barely get my thumb and middle finger to touch wrapping around my wrist. can't do it with thumb and pointer. i'm also by no means fat.

    like I said - I'm small framed for a tall guy.

    If your fingers barely touch or slightly overlap, you are average.

    If they don't touch at all, you are big boned.

    as for the topic at hand... dont do this shit, its really stupid and counter productive. Its only healthy to lose .5-2lbs/week. Anymore is too rapid to be healthy and/or simply bone mass/water weight. Just go ahead with your plan to cut soda out of your diet and start to work out a little. If you dont want to work out, fine, but dont do a "crash" diet. Its stupid.

    As for being "big boned" and what not, it is true. I have a small frame, my thumb goes past the first knuckle of my middle finger when put around my wrist. I thought it was a myth as well but Im currentlyl in nutrition class and my professor says its definitely true. However its not true to the extent of someone being obese. It just means that a person thats 5'11 could have a healthy body weight anywhere from 135-180. The variance is mostly due to bone structure.


    So yah, dont do this, the weight you lose will not reflect in a better physique nor will it make you healthier, so Im not quite sure what purpose it would serve except to dehydrate you before you visit a tropical climate. Doesnt seem to make much sense to me.

    I am also becoming active again, so it will all work out ok.

    I mean if you are just doing this for prop bet purposes or something similar, cool. But seriously it is pointless for any other purpose, i.e.: getting healthy, looking better in a bathing suit, losing weight around the waste, ect.



    and since we are on the subject of stupid diets:

    Atkins is fucking retarded, and anyone who follows it is a retard. You are cutting out essential food groups, you cannot possibly get all the nutrients you need. You could go on a fucking cheesecake diet and lose weight. The reason is because your body is not being given what it needs to maintain itself in a healthy way. Pretty much youre starving yourself.

    Oh and the simplest argument against this abomination of a diet is that it has not been published in one scientific journal. Atkins has been around for the better part of half a century. Yet not one peer reviewed journal has published an article supporting it. Its a sham, stop being idiots.

    If your looking for scientific journals on the Atkins diet, you may want to also look into Ketogenic diets and or anabolic diets. As for being a sham, they are actually finding some interesting things in using this diet not only for extreme obesity, but also epileptic children. Look for someone named Dr. Jeff Volek of the University of Connecticut.

    Wrapping my left hand around my right arm I can make it a little way up my arm. My right hand around my left arm however I can barely get my middle finger and thumb to touch at the very joint where my hand and wrist are connected. Um.. this is pretty normal right?

    yeah boost is right.. trying to lose 10-15 pounds in 2 weeks is extremely counterproductive and you will basically be losing water/muscle/bone mass which is v. v. v. counterproductive for what you're trying to do. like he said, stop drinking pop, drink water instead, eat healthier, and try to get some exercising and/or lifting in and you will be looking better in no time. i'd bet after 6 weeks or so you will be able to see clear, visual changes for the better.

    This can not be a good indicator of bone size. Since hand size varies greatly from person to person.

    yeah but does hand to bone width vary greatly?

    guys who are lanky are going to be able to do the wraparound. guys who aren't won't.

    let's just say that I bet shaq can't get his thumb further on his middle finger than shawn bradley, even if they are the same height and have the same hand size.

    Someone said something about this maybe not being the healthiest thing ever... i hate to agree with that, but...

    You guys could go get tested for body fat % and race down from there... wouldn't that be safer than pure lb's?

    No one wanted to wager. oh well.

    I got back into the 180s today. I am surprised how out of shape I am. But I guess sitting on your ass for years on end instead of playing hoops/v-ball/bicycling everywhere on a daily basis like I did in college takes a toll.

    I am back up to running 20 minutes without dying. I think I'll be up to 30 minutes by next Friday.

    I am also planning a healthy feast for tomorrow night to surprise my wife (who is enduring a 80+ hour workweek in 5 days).

    actually Im pretty sure it is. I believe a persons hand size (read: finger length) is generally related to their height. Things like forearm length ratio to shin length are pretty much standard unless the person is a midget or otherwise disformed. So if our finger length is a roughly the same for every in relation to their height this test would be pretty accurate. A taller person should have bigger bones and will have longer fingers, a shorter person should have a more petite frame and will have shorter fingers.

    yeah there is some crazy shit when comparing your body parts. like your foot = the size of your fore arm.

    boost, its not just atkins diet that is stupid. almost every diet ppl do is stupid. its like, just dont eat really high fat foods, eat healthy and regularly, and thats pretty much it. theres this new diet thing call NutrSystem (i think) and it is advertised every commercial break it seems like on tv. they basically ship you your meals which consist of a bunch of like stereotypical american type food (burgers, pizza, meat loaf, etc.) and they have all these ppl that are like, "look! i lost 35 lbs from nutrisystem, now i look great in a swimsuit!" and then to the side in small text it says "these results are very uncommon" or something like that.

    Just so you know there have been studies posted that say that people who drink diet soda will actually gain more weight than those who don't. The reason for this is that the fake sugars (Equal, sweet n low) don't properly interact with your body, causing a break down in the way your body process hunger signals. Soda is bad for you in so many ways that to think you are getting on the fast track to healthytown just by switching to diet soda is retarded.     And aspartame is suspected to cause brain cancer, which probably isn't a good thing...unless you're into that kind of stuff.

    Same with acesulfame potassium or whatever the hell it is that is also in pretty much every low/0 calorie drink

    also since there are no calories in the sweeteners it can actually have an effect of making your body seek calories. It tasted the sweet, but it didnt get any of the fuel from it, so now you feel hungry or whatever.
