Bible thumpers do just that. When they go searching for truth, they all check with scripture for answers. "Are people evil? John 3:16 says..."
And when cherry picking those answers, they conveniently ignore the portions of the book that are contradictory to the point they are trying to support. My brother-in-law likes to hold up the "gays are evil" passages to explain why he won't let the kid of a lesbian couple come to his house but during this conversation, I guess he forgets the "love everybody" stuff.
The answer is to just not bother venturing into conversation with people only equipped with tunnel vision. I rarely talk to my brother-in-law at all, preferring for our sole interactions to be grunts at Christmas, me calling him a fascist neo-Nazi under my breath or when I'm imagining stabbing him in the eye.
