heading out fishing in a few hours
crappy day for it cold and rainy, but it is better than sitting inside doing nothing

fished sky pond with a buddy(PJ) on saturday
cold, drizzly and some wind
we had the place to ourselves
it was slow at first but once we found the fish it was easy pickings
PJ caught a bunch including a real nice 14 inch brookie
i caught 9 in the the 8-11 inch range

we started off by eating at Plain Jane's Diner in rumney
bisquits and gravy yumm yum

buddy's post

met flomo at 0500 for breakfast and headed out to "Jenkins River".
The state had just put some big fish in there, and someone had reported the hoards had descended earlier in the week.
got there 6ish, and had a nice stretch to ourselves.

put on a nymphing rig and after 6 or so casts, had one on, not the best fish, but one of the nicer 'bows of the day


worked our way down stream and had a one more follow or two, after
realizing most of our action was coming at the slower tail outs we worked on
those.
flomo took position on a slow run coming around a rock and worked a nice
seam. not too long afterwards.....


he had a few fished hooked; among them was this beauty....


working our way up steam we hit the slower edges and got a few more nice
fish like this one


about 11 or so we saw some henrickson's start to move about and even some
spinners with egg sacks, on our way back to the car, i put on a egg sack
spinner. i concentrated on a pool where i had a follow on my strike indicator
earlier in the day, after my first cast, BAM:


called it a day on that note!
we headed home the long way and stopped at Long Trail for some Wings,
Burgers, and Coffee Stout that they only serve at the brewery

went back to the Jenkins river on monday
hoping to have another great experience
mission accomplished


got on the river about noon and started where pete and i had left the previous day

using BHprince nymph size 10 picked up this rainbow
my best looking rainbow of both days (in respect to fins)
long and slender compared to the hatchery fish







got this fish along side this rock which did not produce a fish the previous day for pete
also missed another from the other side of the rock


moved to another spot upstream
fished the rock(big rock with wood debris in pic below) downstream and did not get a hit
figuring there must be fish in there, i climbed to the top of the rock
looked down from the top of the rock and saw a huge rainbow
it ignored the prince and a slumpbuster. but jumped all over yellow conehead muddler

site fishing is so cool 8-)
being on the rock 15 feet above the fish and watching it take was fantastic

i slid down the back side of the rock to play the fish
got a great look at the rainbow before the hook pulled out
about 22inches and fat as me


the water was down about 3 inches from the previous day and fish were easy to spot and the wading was easier

at this time i was satisfied with my day and started to fish for only fish i could see
this technique probably was not the best for catching numbers of fish
but much more fun and rewarding

went up to another strecth and didn't fish just looked for fish
none sited

went downstream to another stretch and immediately sited a nice brown feeding below the surface
was able to get it to follow a bunch of flies but not take the flies
prince, muddler, slump, dries .......
it finally grabbed a soft hackle swung in front of it
and it was pricked for about 2 seconds

moved back up the bank to site fish and found 4-5 rainbows working near the head of a pool

hendricksons were really starting to show them selves (and probaly some other mayflies) 3:00 pm
picked up this fish from that group


3 fish were rising across the river at this point

this nice brown(19 inches) fell for a hendrickson dun

was already late for getting home so the others will have to wait their turn

this long weekend went out saltwater fishing

Been a long winter and I have been looking forward to this all winter, I love to fish for anything that swims but I have salt water in my blood and stripers are my favorite. Also had a Haba newbie on board which is my favorite. Love to show folks that Boston Harbor can produce some fish and is actually pretty nice spot.
Had Veterans Solid and Newbie flomo on board. The High tide wad 5AM, we were on the water out of Winthrop by 6AM. Water was cold 49F , very little bird activity. Motored over to the Neponset River and found warmer water ( 51-54F) and birds and fish. Not the usual bite you would expect to see right now but fish where there none the less. I would say the Haba is 2 weeks behind. The weather was calling for Small craft advisory starting at 1PM. It is rare to have a Small craft advisory in the Haba but when there is I always seem to be there! Solid, PW, SteveH, Wetfly action, Swede ,Vossman can attest to how nasty it can get in a place that is usually has lake like conditions. Today it was windy , like 20-30 SW , waves in the 1-3ft range. I Have a system down where you can FF in these conditions . Basically short casts into the wind and drifting.
Flomo picked this up quick and compared it to rubber worming, he was the high hook of the day with a Keeper to his name.

I was in a steelhead/walleye tourney this weekend on Lake Erie. We caught some nice eating steelhead but no one from my party broke the leaderboard...the biggest walleye was almost 13 pounds. Ridiculous.

How does one learn to be a mildly competent fisherman in a reasonably efficient way? I'm thinking finding a guy who is competent and offer to buy all the beer to go fishing with him might be a start, but if anyone has other useful suggestions I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Yes, it's a good skill to have, especially since wufwugy says that in 10 years there will be no more oil and we'll all turn into hunter/gatherers. This and karate, imo. You'll end up dying of mercury poisoning though, I guess, if you eat too much fish. Damn, we can't win.

Where do you live that is completely devoid of fishable waters? There's not a pond or river where you can throw a line and bobber in? The fish don't have to be good eating species for it to be fun.

Did you take that Fargo job? You won't be far from some good lakes there. You def need to fish with a local. Hiring a guide for a day is a good option.

The pic is from a couple of years ago but it was closer to 8-9 lbs, I think. Big fat female. I caught it with a bottom bouncer Lindy rig kind of setup when we drifted into some deeper water than we normally fish. I would've released it but it came up too fast and you can see in the pic that its eyes popped out from the pressure change. Still made good eatin', though not as good as the smaller ones.

kingnat: Just find a pond and take the kids there for some panfish. All you need are some small hooks, a bobber, and some worms. The fish usually take care of the rest.

Although a guide is a good time usually. They are often so into finding you fish at that moment, that you may not get much good info. (I've guided bass in the past and wouldn't dream of giving good tourny info or spots away as an example. My goal was to have them catch so many smallies that their hands hurt. throw a tube, catch a fish, lol.) Guides typically specialize and beyond what you are fishing for, the rest is ignored.

I can help with any basic info that can be passed by PM, as most here can/will. So don't hesitate to ask.


Saturday I took my kids to a pound near the house, (as I live on Lake St Clair, anything smaller is a pond.lol) I didn't even mess with any worm's. Just took a few small rods, a couple bobbers, some #8 hooks, and some corn. (My know it all 9 year old daughter argued that we should stop at store and get fresh corn on the cob, as the fish would prefer that to frozen.lol)

The 1st bluegill was caught while baiting the 2nd pole, and on and on it went til the kids got bored (which isn't long sometimes).

Never kept a single one as I usually have enough accidental wallys and perch in the freezer. But the kids don't care about that. They just want to fish.

One thing I've always stessed to my kids.

I know that may sound odd, but it's something I really drive home. To the point that my son, like me, always kisses his first fish and my daughter says TY to the fish as she releases them.

It's about the fishing, not just the catching that makes it so special with the kids. And you may learn a few things along the way too.

US side. But when I fish the lake itself, I spend a majority of time in the horseshoe/cutoff area or on the south shore. I have caught some nice bags in Mitchells bay though too. About the only time I'm in US waters is when I'm running to a spot or a lil time in the south channel and near Russell Island. Same with Erie. 99% in Canadian waters, But I'm also a river rat later in the season. So tons of time in both rivers.

Was thinking the other day. How much I've spent on licenses over the years. Always have Michigan, Ohio, Canadian, and Wapole. Then add 3-4 for out of state tournys and it's been a ton!!!!

Yep, I did take the job. (Asst. Prof of Physics Kingnat. w00t!) We move in like two weeks, so I will have tons of fishing waters available. I've done worm, hooks and bobber fishing with my kid, and he's enjoyed it a lot. This is going to sound like one of my more ignorant statement, but how does one find the best places to do that kind of fishing. Should one be able to do that almost anywhere? It seems like the times we've been, it can be awesome and at others, it's totally dead. And the latter very quickly turns the outing sour. Do I just need to scout the lakes a bit more? Asking people where the best spots are?

You can use a hook, bobber w/ worm or salted minnow and just cast it off shore. Another tried method is using a pickerel rig, with no bobber. Just cast it in and let it sit with either worms or salted minnows.

The red river is loaded with walleye, sauger, drum, catfish and bullhead.
When you get confident in some spots you can try using corn niblets on a small hook and go for some carp.....they be fun...

I suggest going to the nearest tackle store and hit them up for info. If they don't help, dont give them business.

Something tells me I'll be taking you up on the beer offer and introducing you to Lake of the Woods.

For fishing with kids in the Red River all you really need is a slip bobber and a baited pickerel rig with a sizeable weight on it (you need that to stay put in the current). Watch the bobber and when it dips set the hook and haul in. Vinland has it right...there are lots of species and in the right place you'll get lots of action. Kids don't care what they catch, just as long as they catch something. When you get to Fargo just pay attention to spots where you see people shore fishing in parks and stuff. It's a fun way to picnic with the family.

Fishing for channel cats is a different matter. They get pretty big, and their prehistoric muscle structure allows them to practically bend in half so the fight they can put up is unbelievable. I use a stiff pole with 20-30lb test line and a 2oz bell weight upline from a split shot clamped onto the line leaving about a 3'-4' leader to a decent sized hook. I like using chicken livers for bait but even better is chunks of goldeye or mooneye which is another type of fish that you can catch in the Red (and is great smoked). If you're rigged correctly (with your reel unlocked or with the bailer open), when a cat takes your bait it runs with the line leaving the weight on the bottom because the line slides though the eye on the weight as you let more out. Count 10-15 steamboats, lock the reel and haul back hard and then settle in for a good long fight.

Cats like to hang out in the eddies downstream of big rocks, bridge abutments, that sort of thing but they are predators just like any other fish despite their repuation for being bottom feeders so they can be quite mobile.

There's always a ton of carp in the shallows when the smallmouth are spawning on Saginaw bay. I can't recount how many times I've snagged one and thought I had the mother of all smallies. lol. So much pull in them, they'll where you out.

first trout of this season, i felt obliged to eat it
caught it on the lure (toby) in the top left corner of the pic. Ja, ja. Bad form, get out the fly rod, etc. It was on a light spinning rod with 4lb breaking strain line if that somehow makes it more sporting..
