They are five developers asking for $10,000 in funding. Unless they are planning to live with their parents for the next year, they just bought themselves a weeks worth of funding. Forget the money to build a prototype. If you invest in this project you might as well treat a hipster to a cup of starbucks because that's where your money is going.
I wouldn't mind a dumb project... strap some biofeedback tackle to a dog and make it say 'I wuff you'. But don't pretend like you're actually doing any science.

I think you're right. I suspect a dog's thoughts mostly revolve around "can I eat this", "can I fuck this", and "can I piss here".

Now a cat on the other hand... I suspect a cat's thoughts will be mostly "stupid humans", "it's only because you have the thumb", and "one day I'll eat you".

True. Also the situation could have been entirely staged - they caught the spider somewhere and planted it in ant territory where it was sure to be pwned.
