If Bran's quest isn't done, I don't think Snow will be dragging him back to Castle Black.

    A) Locke will be revealed, and it will be apparent that Bran isn't safe south of the wall

    B) Bran is super stubborn and hard headed-- he's not going to just give in because Snow is older or whatever. Think about him sending Osha off with Rickon.
  2. #1727
True. This could just be a convenient meeting. If Bran still keeps heading north, it's better to have them at Craster's while Snow's invasion looms than otherwise. Characters should cross paths whenever possible

I'd be cool with Valyrian steel having no special properties. It'd add another touch of realism although I don't particularly expect that to be true.

Lots of stuff happened again, nothing too interesting or earth-shattering. The old lady definitely is cool. She knows how the world works and how women can guide it their way and passes it on to a younger generation. I like how broad GoT is that they include stuff like that too.
  4. #1729
I for one, do not care for realism in a world with frickin' dragons and hot red witches with smoke monster babies and blue eyed zombies. I hope that sword gives +50 dmg vs undead and has a UNIQUE PASSIVE: is always shiny, even when covered in blood and mud
  5. #1730
Stupid nitpick: Meereen champion would have killed Daario 1000/1000 times. Daario's blade would have just glanced off the horse's skull, and then he's SOL. However, I don't give a shit about this because a good action-oriented fiction stretches physics on the edges to allow for cool things like this.

Perhaps if a horse skull is weirdly thin or super flat, would the knife have cut through. But other than that, bullets have way more power than thrown knives, and too small of caliber or a slightly wrong angle and the bullet will glance off a grizzly's skull. I think this effect is way more than enough to keep a thrown blade from cutting through the skull of a charging horse
  6. #1731
Anything over +10 DMG is too overp0wered!

But jokes aside it's a definite strong point of the series that the fantasy element is kept to a minimum, makes it very accesible. You can almost write the magical elements out of the show and contain the story, very different than a Lord of the Rings.

I get the impression that GRRM doesn't know action that well though. I mean, the whole "disarm a wildling's additional weapon to even the odds" thing can't be right. It's not like I know what I'm talking about, but I cant imagine the right answer isn't to either get a shield (like a knight) or use directed speed and precision (like a samurai). If it was true that the strategy for a single-sword wielder to beat a dual wielder is disarming, the army of duelies has the easiest win ever

Also I hate Jon Snow. He makes no sense as a character. Somebody who has so much stupid honor doesn't also act like an emo punk who gets in peoples' faces when he's upset. If all he ever wanted was to wear the black, then he'd be jumping for joy at the opportunity to follow the rules orders of his superiors

The real problem is the Nights Watch. That shit is so fucking retarded, but I've said that many times. I need to stop now since I'm getting in bitch and moan mode, yet these are things I don't think are big deals and are mostly unavoidable. I mean, it's like the Night's Watch has to be stupid and dysfunctional in order to make for an interesting story in the first place

omg we totally need to make this the super nittery thread. let's see if i can get 10

    1. thrown blade perfectly slices into horse's skull
    2. baby doesn't freeze
    3. dude drinks out of mormont's skull (isn't there a hole in the neck area of skulls?)
    4. disarm duelies
    5. jon snow has the temperament of ned stark crossed with a dragonless-dany
    6. stannis said he was going to the wall at the end of s3 yet is still sulking in his castle
    7. tywin hasn't sent an army to finish off stannis in his dragonstone hole
    8. olenna conveniently put the poison jewel in joff's drink off camera and with the risk of margaery drinking from his cup
    9. margaery got pass the king's guard (and ser pounce!) to sneak into tommen's chambers
    10. slaves in meereen congregated in such a huge, spontaneous meeting without the masters knowing or there being any rats

We knew Littlefinger was a sneaky little bastard, but that was about as unexpected as any scene that didn't surprise you with someone's death.

And when the hell are we going to get any kind of a Stark reunion?

I have a pretty awesome/horrible idea: on her trek to The Wall, Brienne comes across Arya and Hound, and she fights Hound to the death. Hound kills her and takes her sword. This death could serve the deliciously terrible purpose of poo-pooing all over the so-far-ultimately-unnecessary oathkeeper storyline. It's one of the few ways the writers could use a surprise death without screwing things up.

I don't think that will happen though. Most likely Brienne ends up killing a bunch of wildlings in the soon to come epic struggle on The Wall

Gotta be Mountain vs Oberyn, but could be something like Jaime vs Trant. I could see Jaime offering to stand for Tyrion then Cersei having a heart attack and forcing Jaime out of it. That could happen through Tywin saying that if Mountain is picked, then Oberyn will step up. I think all the Lannisters would be okay with this. Tywin wouldn't super care if either wins, Jaime would be fine with it, and Cersei would probably come to terms with having the so-called baddest man in Westeros try to kill her brother. Of course, Oberyn will win, and we should get an epic Cersei meltdown

Beyond that, I am very confused about what's going on with Stannis. From a plot perspective, if he has to crush some fools. Way too much time and importance has been given to him, and if he sails on KL, he kinda has to win this time. It would be really terrible writing to just have him lose again. Also it's clear that he has the true king's blood and some true magic power behind him, so having him on the throne might make more sense than otherwise. However, he's a lobster and the story would suffer greatly having his uncharismatic self sitting on the throne.

I feel like something really whack has to happen. Perhaps something that make Stannis not take the throne, but also not lose an attempt at taking the throne. But I don't see how. Part of me thinks that we could be in for a Lannister slaughter. Like the entire house getting wiped out before the end of the season. From a plot perspective, that certainly can be done. I'm not sure it's a good idea, but the story has too many superfluous characters and the Lannisters, while great TV, can be eliminated while the integrity of the story remains

I mean, how else are the writers supposed to fix the Stannis the problem? Could that involve fixing the "Tywin problem"? Like if Stannis invades KL, he has to sack it this time, so where does that take Tywin? Does he retreat? I just don't see that working. I think there is foreshadowing for a possible connection between LF/Tyrells/Iron Bank, which means that they could side with Stannis. Maybe this would make for the Lannisters retreating to Frey territory and somehow getting the Martels to engage from the South. I think one way they can get that is by making the Trial by Combat on location, so they all ride out to where Mountain is stationed, but right as they're away from KL, it gets sacked by Stannis. This would allow for the Stannis arc to go where it absolutely has to while making the Lannisters fighting back from outside plausible.

The Greyjoy storyline needs to die. Seriously, you could wipe out every single Theon scene from the beginning of the show, and GoT would have lost nothing. The Iron Islands are stupid and serve no purpose. I've been holding out for some sign that being Ironborn matters for something deeper or that Theon is under some crazy arc like he'll eventually become a Drowned God priest and save half the continent or something, but none of that appears to be coming. At this point, the Iron Islands should sink into the sea. It is just a waste of time.
  27. #1752
Tyrion getting mad sure made an impact. I was actually fooled into thinking he had a little "oh my brother does care for me" moment and would cool it but that's not how it went. On the Theon Greyjoy storyline, that's getting really weird. But I don't mind it being in there. GRRM doesn't shy away from any perversions have to give him that.

i'm always so bored of the stannis story line, almost as much as bran.

i just want to see the dragons fuck some shit up.
  29. #1754
Why the hell would Oberyn fight?
  30. #1755
Oberyn vs Mountain is one of the most projected pieces of foreshadowing I've seen. Everything about Oberyn is basically Chekhov's gun and it must culminate. After Tywin told him he'll get a meeting with Mountain, it looked like it would specifically be Oberyn vs Mountain instead of some of the other suggestions like Oberyn killing Tywin or poisoning Joff.

It's because of the rape and murder of his sister by Mountain and/or Tywin. Half the scenes with Oberyn have been about this.
  31. #1756
I'm guessing Cersei names Mountain, so they travel out to where Mountain is stationed without much care about who will step up for Tyrion, but Jaime knows he will, then right before it happens, Oberyn pimps out and steps in with the "you killed my sister, prepare to die" thing. Obviously Oberyn wins. I really hope he remains a big character because he's one of the coolest in the whole show.
  32. #1757
Oberyn is a pretty suave guy, I don't expect him to go the physical route and be there for one big fight. It's also for a cause that he's pretty impartial to and he comes off more like he's going to be around for a long time - or so I hope, he's a welcome relief to a few characters that have gotten stale.

And I have a feeling that Daenarys is going to take her sweet time before she actually sails out to go to war. They're setting up such a big local plotline for her. Not sure where Stannis is going. Maybe he gets some cool new allies to keep things fresh and goes for another loss? Or a temporary win to set the Lannisters fleeing only to be killed in the next season.
  33. #1758
jackvance, I don't mean to be that guy, but I can't help myself:

Do you even watch the show?

You don't expect Oberyn to go the physical route? He's a noted bad ass, and we've already seen him spill the blood of some random Lannister soldiers, all the while keeping it suave. Further, we know that he wants revenge against the Lannisters for what happened to his sister, a desire for revenge which Tywin has wisely deflected to The Mountain who was specifically responsible for his sister's fate.

Oh, and the Stannis haters are the lamest. Stannis is an enigma in that he's such a dry humorless cunt that he is one of the funniest most lovable characters on screen. Have we all forgotten the "Sir Jaime Lannister, he may be a..." line?
  34. #1759
I hope that Oberyn's purpose in the show isn't just for this physical confrontation is all I meant. That he has his own bigger plan ready rather than to have this impromptu fight. But next week should quickly show where this is going..

He's all right, I guess. If I had a complaint, it would be that he and Stannis are too one-dimensional. Where I'd say Jaime is arguably the most well written character of all time because it's so easy to forget how horrible of a person he is, Davos seems unhuman in his stalwart stoicism
  38. #1763
I'm pretty convinced that Stannis will invade and sack KL while all the Lannisters are doing the Mountain vs Oberyn duel on location. I honestly don't see any other way to deal with Stannis suddenly having a major army

For the confused I made a post and deleted it quickly because it may have had a bookreader slant, or be construed as such. I will say that one of the seeming themes of the show is #2's being the real piece movers. We don't really care about the kings as much as we care about their Hands, just like in the Wire we learned more about Stringer Bell than we did about Avon.
  40. #1765
I read the above post because I figured you had enough restraint to not do what you just did.

Wtf Renton? You're a bookreader, please stay super clear of speculating or being a guiding hand. I don't feel terribly spoiled, but I don't really want bookreaders highlighting subtle but important themes for me.

Its obvious from the context the show has currently provided. Joffrey and Robert were fairly one dimensional characters. We enjoyed those characters to be sure, but I think it's pretty clear that they had a lot less depth than the surrounding players like Tywin, Ned, Tyrion, Varys, and Littlefinger. The show also spent more time on Catelyn and Theon than on Robb. It's just a common motif in fiction. Examples would be Stringer>Avon, Deputy Burrell > Commissioner, Mike Ehrmantraut > Gus. I believe I've spoiled nothing, but I'm sorry you feel that way.

I chuckle every time someone whines about super subtle maybe potential spoilers.
  43. #1768
I think saying #2s are the piece-movers is something that can be gleaned from the show alone. I mean, we already know that GRRM has a love affair with disabilities, disfigurements, and anybody not "the first son". I bet the only reason Jaime, as the first son, is still alive is because Locke chopped his hand off. If he ran as good as Robb, death would quicken upon him like the wrath of a scorned Shae.
  44. #1769
It's something that can be gleaned from the show alone, but it being put out there by a bookreader in the midst of speculation is really lame.

There is a book thread. Whether it's a spoiler or not, it's something I shouldn't have to worry about while reading this thread.

WTF boost, this is the GOT HBO-purists thread, not the annoying whining cunt thread.

I don't actually have anywhere to go with this. I just thought since you seemed hyper sensitive, I'd call you a whiny cunt so we can escalate this boring ass thread.

Boost I agree with what you're saying and I think what it comes down to is trust. If the same exact words from my post came from someone like dranger who has had a history of spoiling things in this thread, I get the concern. But considering the first words of my post indicated that I'd already deleted a completely non spoiler post out of sensitivity to those who may construe it as such, I should hope you have enough trust in my character that I wouldn't give any information or speculation based on advanced knowledge of the books.

I should also note that the show has already covered a solid majority of the book material, and it is increasingly becoming quite difficult for book-readers to spoil things, as we are more and more surprised by the events depicted in season 4 every week. Subtle thematic threads were very well developed by this point in the narrative. Also, themes are often the opinion of the reader/viewer anyway so it's just impossible for you to glean anything remotely resembling a spoiler from such vague comments as mine.
  47. #1772
Yeah, sure, but here's the thing: you are not special. This thread is public, and expecting some sort of free pass to bookreader it up sets a bad precedent. Also, while I trust you way more than I trust dranger when it comes to something like this, we all have the potential to slip up.

And to the people calling me over sensitive-- we all have differing tolerances for spoilage, some people don't watch the "previously on" recaps, some don't watch trailers, etc etc. But to discuss the show in public we need to have a reasonable threshold, and enforce that threshold across the board. I think not having bookreaders influence my outlook on potential future events is a pretty fair threshold. Renton's comment, whether he meant it or not is very easily read as saying a certain character is more important than one might have otherwise thought. That's how I read it, and I don't really want to be corrected now because that just makes me think the opposite is true.

I don't think you had any ill intent Renton, I just think we're swimming in murky waters when we have stuff like that being posted by bookreaders.
  48. #1773
    False: Renton IS special.

Yeah, I think they're just in a bind when it comes to casting non CGI giants. But you can take solace in the fact that this one will only be around for a few more episodes at most. No way they built Oberyn up this much to have him killed off by a character who hasn't done anything but provide backstory for others.

I've never been so surprised at anything in cinema.

Does this mean Tyrion dies? It can't, because he's supposed to die. GRRM only kills people who are supposed to not die. That's part of why I thought Oberyn would win

Can't say I have any clue whatsoever about what happens with Tyrion or Jorah

Maybe I've been tricking myself all this time. From a plot perspective, Tyrion should die. I just assume he doesn't for other reasons
  64. #1789
Seriously that was crazy. There is something truly dreadful with how he died

When Ned died, I just shrugged. I was spoiled on the Red Wedding, but probably wouldn't have cared much because I didn't like any of the characters who died. I figured Teh Joffers would die, just not so soon. But Oberyn. Jesus. I mean, I found some hints from bookreaders that suggested he wasn't a major character, but not like this.

I was also a little enamored at the kind of character he could have been. You could do some serious Yojimbo/High Plains Drifter with him. But that's not GRRM's style

Did not see that coming. He was really dragging out the revenge thing too much, making a spectacle out of it, I started to feel something special was up but still, why that? :/

No way Tyrion is going to die though. Just, no way in hell, GRRM or not he's not killing the imp. My opinion ofc.

What if he's just executed in the most normal, beheading procession, no interruptions....just to fuck with everyone.
