Default First Skydive in 6 months - and guess what happened :(

This gave me a sick feeling in my stomach when I looked up and saw it (this is not me but the same thing happened to me). http://portfolio.iu.edu/dschnaib/gile_spinner.wmv I packed a little lopsided which is what caused it - I didnt think it was near lopsided enough to cause this but the thought did enter my mind when I put it on my back. I wasn't to thrilled on the idea of riding my reserve down since I just got it repacked like 2 days ago and luckily I came out of it just like this guy did and ............................... my landing was super soft and nice and gentle and everything and Im glad to be back. The video looks worse than it really is. Its scary as hell but that can't kill you unless you let it. You just chop your main and pull your reserve and your fine. So it wasn't really dangerous just freaks you out when your see your canopy like that above your head. I intentionally wore my FTR hoodie and jumped with it and had my friend take a few pictures of me comin in but he was about 100 feet away from me so I'm not sure you'll even be able to tell. They are still on my friends camera and he is gonna send over to me in a little bit and then ill post em on here.

The reason it happened to be today I jumped is because if I didn't go today I would lose currecy on my license and have to do gay recurrency stuff. So I just made a real nice easy jump not putting anything into the equation that could hurt me.

My leg still isnt in a condition to jump like a bunch of jumps every weekend and I probably won't make another jump for a month or so to give me leg some more time to get better. It will be 6 months from my crash that shoulda killed me in 2 days.

Ive been riding around 30-35 miles everyday for awhile now and my leg really is getting quite strong its just the bone that needs to finish healing 100%. I can even run for a couple minutes at a time now.

Yeah man this is #1 in my mind now on the way down. Trust me I'll never forget what jump #131 cost me - If I happen to forget I just touch my leg by my knee where the screw head pops out (knowing its attached to a giant rod and another screw) and it brings back all the memories. Its weird being able to feel metal pieces sticking out of your body. I can't say its a good feeling.

    IM sure it is!

    question
why didnt the guy in the video just cut his chute?

is it easy enough to fix that he wasnt worried about it?

Because he had plenty of altitude to fix it and if you chop your main you a lot of times lose your reserve pilot chute and deployment bag and can lose your cutaway and reserve cables if you drop em during all the action. Plus your main could blow away to a place you could never get it though main canopies are almost always found. You probably get out of about 90% of those too they are just a little scary when you are in them.

The scariest part was definitely the beginning when it started and i was yankin on my risers as hard as i could and kickin my legs to get out of em. And what I saw. The canopy was still spinning up more and more for the first few seconds and I was thinkin son of a bitch this thing aint gonna turn around for me. Then it paused. I keep yankin at it. And it slowly started going the other way then sped up and popped me out of it. My heart was poundin pretty hard I must say.

Also I pulled very high on this jump - like 6k - cause i was practicing landing a bunch of times in the air before i made final approach - so I probably had a good 40 seconds maybe longer to fight this bitch before I would have had to cut it away.

Go BoonDock! I would love to do this one day, a good friend should be comming back from Newzealand in the summer; he's done jumps out there and would join me for one in the UK - it wouldnt be such great scenary but must be such an amazing experience.

What I dont get is how nutty base-jumpers are, as surely they only get one chance and don't have time for a cut-away? Heres a cool vid by the way (a few especially insane jumps inc the last one ) http://www.yourdailymedia.com/post/1138274978/

lol well the day of my accident I jumped my base canopy out of the plane to get a feel for it and was going to be jumping it off an antenna within the next couple weeks - I was already registered for bridge day and everything and had to cancel when I pounded in. So my complete base rig is sitting at home just waiting to be used . Someone already offered to buy it and you no what I said. Hell No Fool !!!!!!!!! My leg wont be broken forever. Hahahaha

Man I have a phobia of heights too, but thats why I love doing things that involve heights. I love to rock climb and stuff like that. The fact that Im afraid of heights and my balls shrivel up and get all tingly when IM up there just makes it better. Its like an insane rush... I just cant get enough of it.

Yeah man Ill go with you and jump out with you and everything. You dont have to do anything if you are doing a tandem which is what i recommend. Youll get a good 45 sec freefall maybe a little more and probably 4-5 minutes under canopy maybe a little more. Its $155-165 somewhere at this one I go to near vegas. If you wanted to do AFF training (accelerated freefall) its like almost 300 bucks I think but thats how you go about getting your A license - there are like 13 AFF levels or something and when you are done with them you can jump by yourself.

I recommend tandems to everyone who isnt planning on getting licensed. You get to experience all the main thrills of skydiving without having to learn anything. They just strap you on and jump out.
