Default Diet Coke vs Regular Coke

Can someone please settle the arguement of which is healthier if you were to take one drink?

I cant find enough/solid articles to convince my loser friends of why diet coke is worse for you, please help.

You won't find much in the way of arguments against Aspartame in mainstream medical references. It's been too vague and the whole approval process was kinda dodgy. Just look for as much as you can on Aspartame and use that. The only reason it's worse is because Aspartame is more dangerous than sugar. For fun, you can also look up some things relating Diet soft drinks to Gulf War syndrome.

I'm not sure what's worse, searching the internet for legitimate medical information or asking an internet forum to search the internet for legitimate medical information.

I dont drink either, but i would choose sugar over aspartame. At least you know what sugar does to your body. IMO theres not enough evidence that aspartame, or any other artificial sweetener, is safe.

A role for sweet taste: calorie predictive relatio... [Behav Neurosci. 2008] - PubMed result

If you access to any of those sources you can read full text, but basically it talks about how fake sweets in coke mess up your body and cause weight gain.

yea, one of the big concerns is the elevation of insulin in the body in reaction to the sweet taste, but without any added sugar for insulin to shuttle, it starts to lower blood Glucose below normal. That creates hunger and in many cases overeating.

I know of several people personally that got a lot bigger after drinking diet Coke fairly regularly.

I drink a ton of Diet Dr Pepper, I guess I'm pretty hooked on the caffeine.

At least I can have a legitimate reason for a avoiding anything with diet in the label.

I'm surprised to see you write this. You don't even have that shitty corn Coke either. Euros have real sugar sugar Coke.

I'm a Dr. Pepper addict and hate anything 'Diet'. That artificial sweetener taste is uck. I need to just give it up cold turkey but at least it's not cigs, pot, or worse. I stopped drinking pop altogether for a while and lost 15 pounds like lightning quick. As far as aspartame goes, I haven't heard/read good things.

man I had no idea people actually preferred diet coke. That's crazy.

It's a matter of conditioning. I used to think sugarpop was >> sweetenerpop, but after I've gotten used to diet the sugarpops are way too sweet for me. Same thing happens when you go to low-fat cheese, milk, etc - regular cheese tastes like butter and regular milk tastes like cream (yeah I know I'm setting myself up to be ridiculed here, feel free).

the best place to ask would probably be bodyrecomposition.com. lyle mcdonald is one of the best there is at reading and applying the results of scientific literature. he has written about aspartame and other artificial sweeteners before.

going from memory (and i have to clarify that my memory is honestly very hazy on this), you probably aren't going to like what you read. as in, he thinks they are fine (again, iirc).

actually I think european soda is often sweetened with beet sugar, not cane sugar. I'm not sure that there is a discernible difference, but there may be.

I don't mean to sound like your mum here, but wouldn't phasing out coke in favour of fruit juice/water be massively life +EV?

Depends on what life EV is for you. You could replace almost any vice with water and be better off when it comes to life expectancy and health.

or just fresh fruit and water, both of which are infinitely healthier and more satisfying than the syrupy gunk known more commonly as pop or soda (unless it's mixed with liquor, then it's ok)

Though not related to your question. This is important for those of us in america, where everything is HFCS.

YouTube - Sugar: The Bitter Truth

A bit length and requires some chem to understand. But the cliff notes are that HFCS acts on your body in a very similar way as does alcohol. Can cause fatty liver disease normal associated with alcoholism.

and I thought Coke Zero was much better

the zero coke movement - Coke Zero Ingredients

I guess the fresh fruit juice/water is the only way to go from this point forward, I will avoid coke like the plague (even rum coke, i'm drinking vodka juice or naked/rocky whiskeys from now on)

Fresh Fruit > Fresh Fruit Juice. With the former, at least you get the fibre present in most fruits as well.

I wish I could survive on just water but it's ridic hard.
