I myself notice i used to be a forum junkie on many sites, but now with social media. I post on facebook and twitter and find myself having nothing to post on forums and not much interest to do so.
I ask because alot of forums are closing down.

For small talk maybe, but if you are interested in anything and getting better, not just poker, then having a communally makes you better. Whether it's knitting, model rockets, Poker or anything you like.

reddit's great if you want to leech off a thousand communities, not so great if you want to be a part of one.

I'm a member of a few forums where I can discuss my interests with a wider circle of people and my irl mates aren't interested, but will never join FB, Twitter or any of the others. I've really never seen the point of FB in particular (and I'm certainly not alone in my thinking), so I think forums will continue to do okay as long as they market themselves effectively and continue to provide a quality product.

i think social media has made alot of forums grow because more people that would have never been on the internet to begin with are now using and starting to visit forums when more comfortable.. a perfect example is alot of older people and middle aged women have adopted social media and are creating accounts and joining forums just not neccasarily poker related

I don't see the appeal of posting somewhere my mom can read it.

Social media is boring. Forums have some focus (and community as others have mentioned).

It definitely killed off my forum activity if I think about it now. Reddit's the biggest culprit but there are more. I should restart my brain and become more forum-active again.

I don't see people getting everything they could get in a forum on social media. They seem to appeal in completely different ways. Reddit, on the other hand, has absolutely made forums redundant in a lot of ways.

No, there are still many active forums. Social media has had an impact but "kill" is a pretty strong word.

Reddit is literally all liberals college kids living off their parents and the government lol ! That and twitter are two of the worst sites on the internet ! Can't wait till the next big financial crashes and sites like these go bye bye bye just like in 2000 . . .

Twitter and Reddit are not the kind of sites that would be vulnerable to another crash.

I don't think it is social media that has caused the decline in forum participation. For US players, Black Friday killed our options for places to play. We don't trust the remaining sites to make deposits. Sites are not offering much incentive to forums to promote their sites, such as freerolls and money added games which drove the forum members to be active. |

This is actually not what value forums bring to poker players. It drives traffic to the forums, but any smart poker player finds out fast that participating on forums will make you a much better and winning player to the point that you almost don't need or desire small time "freerolls and money added events" It's evidenced by the fact that most of our biggest and highest posting members don't play in these, and freerollers only search for more "nickels and dimes" playing hours on end, for nothing but pocket change. Usually having 1 or two posts on many forums

or more to the point , look at the 150$ mone addeed tournament at Carbon today and all of the people posting in that thread . very few have above 5 posts on the site and they are ecstatic about a chance to play in a 0.1$ tournament. For many of the regulars who have used these forums to improve the game , that isn't even a single big blind in the games that we play. |
