Default Did social media kill forums?

I myself notice i used to be a forum junkie on many sites, but now with social media. I post on facebook and twitter and find myself having nothing to post on forums and not much interest to do so.

I ask because alot of forums are closing down.
  2. #2
No. I don't talk with people I know on forums. That would be lame.

Reddit is the top suspect in this murder investigation.

I stopped using "social" media when it became
    A) more time spent blocking ads and
    B) ignoring people who I am acquainted with, but by no means "friends" with
and less time doing anything which resembled a social encounter.

I spend much more time in forums than I did before.

For small talk maybe, but if you are interested in anything and getting better, not just poker, then having a communally makes you better. Whether it's knitting, model rockets, Poker or anything you like.

I'm expecting a big change in Social media, particularly Facebook. It's tired

forums aren't dying, they're just conglomerating to a degree on reddit and maybe places like imgur or tumblr

reddit's great if you want to leech off a thousand communities, not so great if you want to be a part of one.

^^ great way of putting it. it's depressing honestly.

I'm a member of a few forums where I can discuss my interests with a wider circle of people and my irl mates aren't interested, but will never join FB, Twitter or any of the others. I've really never seen the point of FB in particular (and I'm certainly not alone in my thinking), so I think forums will continue to do okay as long as they market themselves effectively and continue to provide a quality product.

I like posting something once and not 40 different times for 40 different forums. I am not going to
daily blog on 40 different forums. At least this forum allows links and images. Forgot I am still a member
of some forums not able to keep up with new technology. Oops, won't show my 1.3 mb gif when I try
to insert an attachment to this post...
    oh well.

i think social media has made alot of forums grow because more people that would have never been on the internet to begin with are now using and starting to visit forums when more comfortable.. a perfect example is alot of older people and middle aged women have adopted social media and are creating accounts and joining forums just not neccasarily poker related

I don't see the appeal of posting somewhere my mom can read it.
I found myself checking the SC2 reddit more to find out about tournament schedules, but if I'm honest it's much less reliable than just checking the front page of the teamliquid forum. Rilla makes a good point. Reddit is good at filtering utter trash but it will never produce anything controversial or original.

I mostly use forums to jerk myself off, but the rare time I actually want an educated opinion on something, it wouldn't even occur to me to look for help on social media or a subreddit.

Social media is boring. Forums have some focus (and community as others have mentioned).

I much prefer the forum format because it is easier to have delayed conversations. I feel there is no point in adding a witty comment to a friends FB post that is 3 days old, but if you have insight on a forum post it is still valid.

It definitely killed off my forum activity if I think about it now. Reddit's the biggest culprit but there are more. I should restart my brain and become more forum-active again.

I don't see people getting everything they could get in a forum on social media. They seem to appeal in completely different ways. Reddit, on the other hand, has absolutely made forums redundant in a lot of ways.

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is debatable. I think Reddit does a lot of things right, which is the most obvious explanation for why so many have flocked there. I think there's no doubting that, minute-for-minute, it's a much more enjoyable experience than going through forums (except, obviously, for poker advice, except there's probably an /r/HandHistories on there or something) just because of the one-stop-shopping experience and the various filtering mechanisms.

The fact that there's zero sense of community whatsoever is a little weird for me in a forum experience, but given all the upsides of the user experience, I think I could say, "Well, it's not like it was when I was growing up, and there are some things I liked about the thing I was used to, but all-in-all, it's better off this way."

The real issue I take with it is that the main filtering mechanism is based on populism, so the whole thing is systematically anti-intellectual. Good luck hearing anything that goes against the unofficially Reddit-endorsed party line. On FTR, Renton gets a ton of airtime with his libertarianism, even though it goes against a lot of our politics because 1) he is a massively respected poster on here that we all know is worth listening to and 2) chronology determines what posts you read, not populism, so you're just bound to read his posts. Neither of these conditions apply to Reddit, so it's stuck in an echoplex.

I don't mind #1 as much because not appealing to authority can be as much a good thing as bad, but #2 is damning. Sure, there are some good points that are made, but when everything you read is guaranteed to say Jesus is stupid, democrats rock and Tumblr is the worst, then there's not a whole lot to be gained from reading things on the site.

The populist filtering also means that anything longer than 100 words, regardless of the topic at hand, is considered "a novel." Anything longer than 250 words is going to sink to the bottom of a thread faster than you can say "FoxNewsLol!" If I wanted to see bumper sticker length arguments for and against abortion, I would go for a long drive.

No, there are still many active forums. Social media has had an impact but "kill" is a pretty strong word.

Reddit is literally all liberals college kids living off their parents and the government lol ! That and twitter are two of the worst sites on the internet ! Can't wait till the next big financial crashes and sites like these go bye bye bye just like in 2000 . . .

Twitter and Reddit are not the kind of sites that would be vulnerable to another crash.

That's just what the Liberals want you to think. They're broke, turned out pockets, barefoot, because they care too much about the environment to turn a profit so Big 'Ole Uncle Sam has to bail 'em out. Open your eyes, man.

Notice this part . . .Twitter reported a net loss of $511 million in the quarter. Twitter has yet to earn a profit. But most of the loss was due to employees cashing out their stock-based compensation.

I don't think it is social media that has caused the decline in forum participation. For US players, Black Friday killed our options for places to play. We don't trust the remaining sites to make deposits. Sites are not offering much incentive to forums to promote their sites, such as freerolls and money added games which drove the forum members to be active.

This is actually not what value forums bring to poker players. It drives traffic to the forums, but any smart poker player finds out fast that participating on forums will make you a much better and winning player to the point that you almost don't need or desire small time "freerolls and money added events" It's evidenced by the fact that most of our biggest and highest posting members don't play in these, and freerollers only search for more "nickels and dimes" playing hours on end, for nothing but pocket change. Usually having 1 or two posts on many forums

or more to the point , look at the 150$ mone addeed tournament at Carbon today and all of the people posting in that thread . very few have above 5 posts on the site and they are ecstatic about a chance to play in a 0.1$ tournament. For many of the regulars who have used these forums to improve the game , that isn't even a single big blind in the games that we play.
