They're not just really low, they are practically non-existent.

Edit: They are still testing for 'flu mind you, they just aren't finding it. I find it surprising it's basically gone extinct. Not surprising enough to think there's a conspiracy behind it, but it does seem a tiny bit weird.

Maybe we could have gotten rid of some seasonal flus long ago with global measures? Not that big of a stretch at least to my dunningkrugered mind, so far we've basically just let them run their course.

I think I asked this before but not sure I believed the answer: Is there a large covid tinfoil hat movement outside of the US/UK? I just find it hard to believe this could be a worldwide thing.
This is my problem with actually believing it's a hoax. I am near certain that it's being exploited, but planned or faked? It really does mean "they" have global control. But if you believe that, the rest falls into place without the need to get radical. You've done the ridiculous already in abandoning everything that underpins our societies.

I also have a problem with their lack of explanation for the motives behind the 'hoax'. Is it for gov'ts to make money through corruption? They could do that anyways and draw much less attention to themselves if it were just in the course of normal events.

Is it to control us by making us wear masks and stop going to crowded places? Why? What is the endgame of that?

Or, is it because they want to crash their own ecomonies through repeated lockdowns? Most gov'ts have already shown they're scared shitless of doing lockdowns and will delay them as long as they can, and at least beyond the times recommended by experts.

So yeah, we're left with perpetrating a hoax for no apparent gain.

People are scared, they want answers, and the trust in public institutions has corroded. Conspiracy theories, I suppose, provide answers and some comfort. I'm sure stupidity and ignorance also help. There's an uncomfortable amount of MAGA, Qanon, anti-vacc and other loonies here too, and from my point of view at least there's been a clear spike after covid.
Our brains have just one scale, and we resize our experiences to fit.

There's also the theory that these views are being pushed by Russian bots and other bad actors to undermine the West. But that also sounds like a conspiracy theory so I'm a bit confused about whether to buy that one, though it's more plausible than the rest of them I guess.

Even if there are fake online sources, the people are believing it.

IMO, there's a total breakdown of the press. There's no single news agency doing a half-assed job of presenting unbiased news.

Even John Oliver went full hypocrite in his closing argument, and he's a comedian, sure, but the line wasn't funny, and the piece wasn't comedy. He said something like "[Barr] is a moralist with strong opinions about how much power the executive should hold."
Dude. That's your whole schtick. You promote a moralist viewpoint and have very strong opinions about executive power.

I like John Oliver's stuff, but it's just one example that there's no parity in any information coming through about politics these days. The tolerance for corruption on one's own side is extreme, but the tolerance of any hint of impropriety from the other side is akin to treason and a threat to democracy, and perpetuated by criminals and thugs.

The discourse is always sordid, but this is different.

Some foreign reporters covering the election are saying that they've seen all this before in Africa and openly asking if this is the rise of fascism in the US. Openly baffled and scared that the US us falling into all the habits they've lectured the world about for decades. Not US political voices. Independent voices.

IDK what it will take to stop this, and I'm not a politically active person, but I'm seeing more and more that it may take widespread open protests to change anything, and after this summer, I'm not sure the citizens have the stamina or memory span to hold the government accountable.

FFS, unmarked federal troops were kidnapping people in US cities and no one seems to think that was a very big deal.
WTF is going to happen next?
Is it time for decent people to leave the US? Is there anything left to save?

So when is our retarded PM going to realise that as long as we keep schools open, transmission growth will continue? Even an idiot can look at the monthly charts and make the connection.

Secondary schools can easily deliver content online at secondary level and provide limited accommodation for vulnerable kids and those that belong to key workers. Primary school material can easily be delivered by the majority of competent parents within a couple of hours per day 1-2-1, while most employers accept they need to offer flexibility at the moment.

Half-arsed lockdown without enforcement doesn't work with the morons in the UK. Leaving the borders open so long was a disaster and every "decision" taken has no thought for how the world really works. The sooner this idiot goes, the better - I'm surprised the pressure on him hasn't already reached boiling point.

I was seriously questioning your data, given what I've heard, but then I read this part:

And not all the data points to low incidence of school spread. St. Charles County, Mo., one of the few jurisdictions to post detailed case information about school spread, linked more than 1,100 coronavirus cases to school transmission. There is little data on what happens in schools where students are not required to wear masks or socially distance — as is the case in many schools in Georgia and other southern states.
St Charles County is where I grew up, where my dad still lives, and effectively right next door to where I currently live, about 30 miles away.

St Louis area has been declared a COVID hot spot multiple times. PPE is at about 45% usage by the general people outdoors, IMO, at a rough estimate of what I'm seeing around town. Businesses may or may not have any mask requirements for customers, and even when employees are wearing masks, it's hit or miss whether they're even covering their nose.

So I'm not surprised that it's falling into the category of "when infection rates are high."

ldo there has to be a mask mandate mask mandate when you open schools.

Not if your Boris Johnson, you just mess up your hair and confidently predict everything will be great.

The biggest problem a right-wing politican has is that their base is generally against restrictions like business or school closures, mask wearing etc., so given a choice between pissing them off and pissing off the people who wouldn't vote for him anyways (while costing lives and fucking the economy even more), the choice tends to be to do the latter.

It's so transparently bad it's not even funny.

The former is easy to fix. The latter is straightforward for 11-18 in the UK, as secondary schools are opening the facility for these kids, along with the vulnerable and children of key workers. 5-11yo isn't quite so easy but primary schools tend to be much closer to home and have been offering weekly packets of work and activities for collection.

That's the problem strictly analysing the impact of school opening. If the local citizens aren't following guidance, that's only going to be made worse by schools returning.

You would think so, but not in the UK. 30 kids packed into each small classroom without masks.

Ido. I live in a T4 that's as blue as they come. But I see the wealthy middle classes walking together in the local parks in big groups, drinking prosecco from plastic glasses, etc. One problem with having confusing guidance with constant u-turns is that people just say "fuck it, I'll just do what I think is sensible". That and a lot of people are thick, or take the view the government can't tell them what to do, so they'll do the exact opposite.

What staggers me is that there seems to be no thought to the consequences of decisions, no advice taken from experts and no consultation with groups like teachers.

Mrs Bean is a secondary school teacher and we watched the most recent Williamson announcement together. Nobody knew afterwards what it actually meant for them, so it was clear no teachers had proofread the speech.

Likewise the T4, Christmas is cancelled announcement. Nobody in government seemed to think that would mean a mad dash on to the shops and public transport (which was packed out, made worse by running a reduced service(.

Yup to bolded part. There's always going to be some selfish twats that don't follow the rules, but it certainly doesn't help when the rules are really murky to begin with and/or keep changing every week or two.

What's infuriarating is how they constantly stand their ground on their half-assed measures until it becomes unavoidable that they can't keep up the pretense any more and then <snap> they change the policies overnight to something only slightly less stupid, that they can't articulate clearly and that starts in three hours or some shit. Then they try to act like that was the plan all along.

To be clear, I don't envy anyone trying to govern during this pandemic, but fuck me it's hard to imagine anyone handling it worse than the current bunch of twats.

The fact that they're happy to give fat contracts to their incompetent mates at the cost of people's lives is the part that's really unforgivable though imo. Scum.

Looks like you'll be right, another announcement shortly that will be a response to actually listening to experts and current measures having no impact.

It's definitely not just your stereotypical thick people ignoring the guidance. Mrs Bean just said a friend of a friend has it. After attending a garden birthday party for a one-year old FFS.

We need a new slogan. Hands, face, space is getting boring and clearly too difficult to understand.

    Love it.

Boris yesterday: schools are safe and must stay open.

Boris today: schools are leading to increased virus transmission and must close immediately for six weeks.

Gross incompetence. He would have been fired from any other job by now.

About 8 to 10 years ago, a disease called the swine flu swept across the world. I've heard it reported that if swine flu were as deadly as COVID-19, then there would be close to a million deaths in the US by now. It's that contagious. It's been a decade now and there is no vaccine.

Similarly, SARS swept the world nearly 20 years ago. That one could travel through pipes in apartment buildings. Social distancing couldn't protect you. Two decades have passed and the disease still exists, but a vaccine does not.

Maybe you've heard of AIDS. Of course you have, it's been in the damn headlines for 40 years. How many millions of people have died of AIDS in the near half-century that we've known about it? How many vaccines are there?

Ebola has ravaged western Africa since forever. And the vaccine came never.

But now....suddenly in 2020 there is a new threat. Something more ominous and diabolical than all of those other diseases combined. It's infecting people worldwide and the 99.99% survival rate is just too terrifying to ignore. We can't brush this off like we did with AIDS. We have to try really hard to solve it and get a vaccine, right now.

Got that? Vaccines are really really hard to make. Sometimes, often even, impossible. But this time, we just really really wanted it bad enough. We just decided that we're going to work really hard and get exactly what we want, when we want it. Trump said "warp speed" and so we just put all that other crap on hold and cooked up this magic medicine so the virus can't fuck up another basketball season.

Am I crazy if I think you're crazy if you want to get this Trump-syrum injected into your body?
  24. #1149
The difference between SARS and Covid is the Chinese actually got on top of SARS. Covid was allowed to spread. I guess SARS was a bit too fucking nasty to allow it to run rampant.

AIDS you don't get by being coughed at. Ebola isn't nearly as contagious as flu, sorry Covid.

Ivermectin makes you totally immune to the virus (covid19) and heals you if you have it. It's a cheap old medicine. This is based on copious evidence from many countries over 9 months. But why do I keep only hearing about the experimental Pfizer mRNA vaccine? How many millions are they making? Why do countries like Switzerland where no one had to wear masks had the same infection/deaths than a neighboring country Austria where everyone had to wear masks? Why did the US have the same amount of deaths in 2020 as in 2019 and the years before if we are in a deadly pandemic? Why are most hospitals empty?

Seriously, whenever I look at numbers on this pandemic I feel like we are being conned. Not that there is a virus, but the incompetent exaggerated global response to it.

    CONSPIRACY THEORIST ALERT

I feel like we're being conned, but this is no 9/11 where I can scream about freefall. I'm still somewhere in the region of >99% sure 9/11 was an "inside job" or whatever, but that certainty doesn't exist with covid. Still, I'm near certain that it's at least being exploited for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies. Quite how much deeper the rabbit hole goes, I don't know, and I'm not sure I want to know.

Employers in france have contracted with a swedish company to produce devices that enforce social distancing in the office.

It looks like one of those vibrating devices you get when you're waiting for a table at a restaurant. You wear it around your neck. If you get within 6 feet of another device, it emits an audio warning, an alarm.

They use those at ice skating rinks. I think they're neat. They can be programmed to ignore those that are in a group with you and give you feedback when you get close to someone else. I can't imagine they're too effective, but it's an excuse not to close down winter sport, and I'm sure whoever is making them is having a good time.

UK gov't is putting in a scheme where people entering the country are forced to stay in a hotel. First day of operation the online booking system crashed. People can't book their hotels now and ostensibly will face a fine of up to £10k for "breaking the rules."

Hotel scheme is only about 11 mo. too late for first wave I might add, and 2 mo. too late for S. African variant.

Highest death rate and worst economic impact in the world, and they're still fucking things up. The only thing they've done well at is the vax rollout, and that's because it's the only job they gave to professionals to do, and not to one of their mates.

Sounds like hyperbolic speculation. No one would actually try to fine them for this, right?

I don't think they really would or even legally could, hence my use of the word "ostensibly." The real criticism is fucking up the online booking system, so these people have nowhere to go and have to either drive around looking for a hotel/phoning places up, or (more likely) will just say "fuck it" and go home or wherever they wanted to go in the first place.

That said, they were giving parking tickets to truckers who were stuck on the motorway at the port when the French closed their borders a couple of months ago. Not sure how widespread it was, or if they actually had to pay the tickets they were given - probably not.

Actually, people probably would get fined still, because they would be expected to use their phones. Still a bit of a cockup though since the gov't presumably paid one of their mates a big pile of money to set up the coronavirus q'tine hotel booking system (there's a set of hotels that specifically only host people coming in from abroad) and it doesn't even work lol.

More evidence coming out of Boris' incompetence.

Boris' scientific advisors unanimously told him to introduce a lockdown in mid-Sept. when cases were beginning to rise steeply. The health secretary agreed as did his chief advisor. The treasury sec. though said "wait a minute, come and meet these crackpot skeptics. They say we don't need a lockdown." Boris went along to the meeting to hear the crackpots out. For some reason he also sought the counsel of ther right-wing media. Together, they sold him and the lockdown was put off.

Two months later he finally ordered a lockdown, after cases had risen steadily from 4.4k a day to 20k a day.

This is our Winston Churchill. FFS.

Half of the UK gov'ts spending on PPE during the pandemic went to party cronies.

And they're all still in their jobs.

Poop, what's wrong with giving a government contract to make PPE to the ex-landlord of your local pub?

Yeah but the fall started before that, and it's falling a lot faster than what the vaccination rate would do.

    Check your PMs.

I have an Aunt who died of covid recently. I haven't seen her in years, since my Nan's 100th birthday over a decade ago, so I'm not cut up or anything, but it's the first person I actually know who has died from it. I have a video-link funeral to "attend" next week. I can't attend in person because of covid restrictions. I'm actually kinda glad, I don't want to go, funerals are horrible.

idk what's going on with the fall in cases, it's a bit weird seeing as lots of people were mingling in a protest, right wingers who are more likely to not wear masks.

Sorry about your aunt. My parents had it back in June or July, but they got over it pretty quickly.

I think we may have had it back in January of last year. We were told it was the flu, but it was the worst I've been sick in my life, and it was nowhere close. I was on my ass for like 2.5-3 weeks.

I'm sending pictures to a friend, so I thought I'd share my corona bag and mask setup.

So this is the corona bag. I got this bitch off of Amazon for like $15 back when I was playing Pokemon Go.

I keep my mask in this pocket here so I can bust out like a ninja on some motherfuckers just whenever.

I keep a squirt bottle for hand sanitizer, a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol for sanitizing my phone and other shit, and I keep folded shop towels to wipe things down that I spray or whatever.

I coordinate my masks with my sweat suits, so I've got the whole line of colors here. The cross stitch up above was made for me for my birthday a couple of years ago.

I also keep a bunch of disposable plastic gloves in there for simple shit like pumping gas. I usually have an extra mask too.

In the early days of the pandemic, I saw a friend in the pub and when I met him we did a fistbump, and he then squirted gel onto his hands to clean them. Fair enough, no offence taken.

Four hours later we were sharing the same ten pound note as we snorted cocaine.

Funny how those hygiene standards disappear so quickly.

I don't have a covid bag. I have a use-once mask in my coat pocket which I must have used 20 times at least.

Around late February/early March of last year, we started seeing that it was going to be a big deal. When that happened, I laid out how we were going to handle things at spoony manor. I made sure we had masks, set out how I wanted them washed, set up our situation for hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol (see above generic containers I got on Amazon), etc. Everything has been pretty smooth without a problem on that front.

We'll probably keep wearing masks a lot of the time in public places after we get the vaccine, especially in the colder months during flu season. I'm more of the southern redneck recluse type in a lot of ways, so I'm all about wearing a mask to thwart the government tracking you and that kind of thing. The girls are girls, and they like matching their masks to what they're wearing and that angle. It also keeps people from talking to them as much, which they prefer.

Overall, the pandemic hasn't really changed our lives in any significant way.

The pandemic hasn't really changed my life. I live in the middle of nowhere (for England anyway) and hardly go out. The biggest difference is the charity shop I work for has been closed, so instead I've been dealing with online sales for them instead of working the till. But other than that, nothing has really changed. I still went to Mom's for Christmas, I can still buy weed, I can still go for walks... I've even had the bonus of not having to pretend to look for work, and I've had an extra £20 a week in benefits (something like $110 a month).

My Aunt was 90-odd and flu would probably have finished her off. I'm obviously sad about her passing, but it comes to us all one way or another. She had a good long life.

I'm pretty fed up with the pandemic, frankly. I haven't been to a restaurant or any other public space except the park in about a year. But I'm 52 so getting it is a slightly bigger risk for me, and I basically treat everyone who's not outdoors as if they have the plague.

Dude I lost my fucking shit on a guy about 6 months ago at a park.

I picked up some food and went and sat out at a park with a girl to eat. We're out away from everyone by a good 40-50 meters or so. This guy just starts walking up toward us holding a handful of leaves. He's going on about some shit I can't hear, but he has no mask and looks like he hasn't washed his clothes or taken a shower in a while.

I'm like hey man, we're in a pandemic, back up. He's trying to be like, "No wait, let me show you something," and just keeps walking up.

After like three or four warnings, the psycho redneck came out of me with a lot of instances of "back the fuck up" and "motherfucker" involved. He stopped and started lecturing me on being nice.

Come to find out, he had some leaves that were shaped like hearts and was trying to give me one.

I felt bad for like 0.25 seconds, but then I was like fuck that. I'm not going to die of the fucking plague just because his dumb ass figured out what a kudzu leaf looks like.

Yeah I wouldn't be ok with some random idiot coming up to me either. My favourite is when some stranger walks up to talk to you and you keep taking a step back and they keep coming forward and it's like ffs, do I really have to explain the whole pandemic thing to this person? I've had that happen two or three times.

I have a park story too. The one near where I live is huge, but because there's nowhere else to go it's busy even when the weather is shit. I take my labrador there with his soccer ball and he loves it. Most people get a kick out of him but like they say everywhere you go there's an asshole.

We were going down this path a couple of weeks ago and this family is around the corner, a guy and his wife about 35 and two or three little kids like 4-6. My dog is off the lead cause he doesn't have a mean bone in his body and he usually just ignores everyone unless they interact with him first. But this family is kicking a ball around and he decides he wants to play too. So he drops his ball and goes after theirs. The wife is perfectly cool about it, just calmly puts her foot on the ball while I come up to get him. The kids are just 'oh ok,' they don't really know what's going on but they're not scared or anything, they're just standing there.

The next thing I know the husband comes charging in, yelling at my dog and chasing him around. It's funny 'cause he's this big fat guy and he's trying to swat my dog and my dog keeps dodging him and treating it like a game and it's obvious the guy won't be able to get within striking distance of him in a million years. This guy is really pissed at my dog and my dog doesn't just a shit, he's having the time of his life getting chased around. So after I chuckle at this display for a couple of seconds I call my dog back. The guy then charges over and starts yelling at me to control my dog.

I say "relax, he's just playing". The guy tells me he is relaxed while he's still yelling and obviously the opposite of relaxed. Meanwhile his wife is telling him to forget it, and his kids are standing there wondering wtf is wrong with him. He keeps going on about how my dog is out of control and all this shit while I calmly sit there and try not to laugh at him in front of his family.

Finally I say "look, I'm sorry ok, I should have had him on the lead. But c'mon, it's just a ball. He didn't even do anything to it." (I should point out it's an off-lead park, so I wasn't technically doing anything wrong, I was just apologising to try to get this guy to move on with his life). Then the guy says he's going to "call the authorities" and I kind of laugh and tell him to go ahead. He gets out his phone and makes like he's dialing, and I say "who are you calling, the ball police?"

The whole time this is going on his wife is still trying to get him to leave. Finally she grabs him and they all leave together, while he's still acting like my dog has rabies and just attacked his wife and kids or some shit.

Later I'm trying to figure out what set him off. I figure he's probably been stuck at home with those little kids for weeks now and he's sick of it and just about anything was going to do it. But man, if a dog trying to play with your ball in a park is what counts as the last straw you have to wonder.

I lol'd. Sounds like that guy was just looking for an excuse to try to flip shit. I can't stand people like that.

In my situation, I don't think I would have reacted the way I did if I was by myself necessarily, but being there with my girl kind of set me off on that protector/provider/caveman instinct sort of thing or something.

Yeah I don't have much patience for anyone that gets in my space deliberately like that either.

Maybe my buddy had this protector vibe going on with him too, dunno. It would make more sense if either his wife or kids were acting the least bit frightened of my goofy dog though. I think he just lost his mind.

I'm both tired all this and being extra cautious. No one pandemic inconvenience is terrible, but all together it's just a lot of grit in the gears of daily life. But I should be vaccinated in a matter of months and it would suck to get it and have a rough go of it this close to the end.

^^ There's definitely a strong mix of cabin fever and being sick of all the restrictions with "I don't want to get this the week before I'm vaxxed" going on in my own head too.

This has been another one of those times in my life where it has benefitted me to be pretty much the opposite. I put a lot of work into being as much of a recluse as I can. I don't really care to be around people, and I wouldn't mind if the measures were even stronger to keep me from having to leave the house as long as I had groceries and whatever else delivered.

I'm pretty much the same as spoon, but I do need some mixed environments and social stimulus to maintain sanity, and as much as I like to stay at home and mess about on my computer, I do need a little bit of "stretching my legs" and doing something "uncomfortable" every now and then.

It actually does build character, IMO. I didn't realize how important a bit (just a bit) of social activity is to my recluse ass.

I rarely like being around people, but if everyone is having a good time, then I like it. So music festivals and gigs are great. But I hate being in a crowded city centre, where everyone is in a rush or getting in the way or being an asshole. Or even a crowded beach were you're surrounded by lots of nearly naked ugly people and annoying children, and a small amount of fine ass and jailbait.

In terms of where I live, I definitely like to be away from other people. I currently have one neighbour and that's one too many. I live with two friends but that's fine, they are people I like being around.

Yeah, I'm much more of a shut in than my post may have made it seem.

I'm pretty comfortable keeping my own company, but when I do have to go out into the world, there's a lot of small inconveniences. For example, if I went for a long bike ride, no matter the weather, I could go without tools/tube patches because I could always just lock my bike up, uber/public transit home, and come grab it at my convenience. That's just one example, and like I said, it's not a big big deal, but there's a ton of those that stack up.
