A nice single malt goes well with one.

It's great in the summer smoking a good cigar with a few friends watching the sun go down. Don't smoke many in a year but I enjoy each one of them.

It's been a while. Yes Dana a good whisky makes it perfect. I think I have an activity for tomorrow afternoon planned out already...

A dark roast of coffee goes really well with them I find. Good alternative to alcohol.

Agree on the coffee, a 2:1 ratio if columbian medium roast and monsooned malabar which is dark and dirty goes well.

Yeah I enjoy one from time to time. Never smoked nearly enough to consider my tastes refined enough to start talking shit about them on the internets though.

I sometimes walk past this 5 star hotel with a swanky cigar lounge with nice leather armchairs and the like. I'd like to go there and smoke at some point.

Would be fun to walk in all dressed up in Armani, sit down in one of those armchairs, and fire up a fat blunt.

Then order some whiskey with an 'e'.

Oh yeah, it was you who I had this discussion with about the 'e'.

I don't have a cigar, but I do have a bottle of Bunnahabhain. Tempting. Also, I bet you don't know how to pronounce that.

I laffed my ass off at this, mostly cuz I'm drunk, and then made the mistake of trying to explain why it was funny to my wife. At which point I realized I had no idea why it was funny.

Its at a resort in the poconos [pennsylvania]. The event is put on by Cigars International and has a ton of vendors there giving out cigars to people who bought the entrance ticket. Ticket was ~$150 and I think I walked away with about 100 cigars, a humidor, lighter, cutter and a couple of ashtrays. went last year and had a blast and decided to make it an annual trip with my buddies and this year was even better.

Do y'all smoke cigarettes as well, cigar smokers? No idea if the two go hand in hand (have to smoke cigarettes to enjoy cigars) or what the deal is, as I've never smoked a cigar.
  28. #28
Definitely do not need to smoke cigs to enjoy cigars. cigarettes you inhale and smoke primarily for the instant buzz fix, cigars you basically just puff the smoke in your mouth/throat area without taking it into your lungs, and therefore the nicotine is absorbed slower and gives a different feeling - it's more about the flavour/smell than any buzz you can get.

Can smoking one lead to smoking the other? Yes. I thought at first smoking cigars are ok 'cause it seems more cultured or whatever. But then I ended up smoking cigarettes. I've also known people who switch from cigarettes to cigars in the similar fashion people switch from regular to "light" cigarettes (i.e. hoping the alternative causes less cancer or whatever).

I tried a cig once way back and it just felt like smoking paper. Never had one again. Also the idea of getting hooked on them and having to step out every hour of the day to get fix isn't too appealing :/ so that probably has helped me avoid them altogether. Well that and the fact that chain smoking will fuck your lungs right up along with other things.

Not really sure how cigars relate in terms of addiction, but I've never heard of anyone smoking them regularly throughout the day. They may be just as, or more addictive than cigarettes but def not as accessible (price and time consuming to smoke a lot of em) so perhaps that would make them less addicting unless you had the time and money to sit around and puff em all day. What do you guys think?

    Love me for a season
I don't understand the point. You just take a drag and swill some smoke around your mouth then blow it out wtf? Is it supposed to be all about being able to distinguish between different artisan tobaccos? In which case you would probably need to smoke a few rather than have just one isolated smoke to understand the benefits.

naw, i don't care too much about the tasting for vanilla, chestnut and whatever stuff you can taste in a cigar. i can tell if a cigar is mild or strong, and bad-tasting or good-tasting. Maybe I'm exagerrating a bit, and I can tell a few more things that differentiates cigars, but I find wine-tasting/cigar-tasting/whisky-tasting fanatics take things a bit too far for my liking. But I suppose they have fun doing so, so why not let them have their fun? I just smoke or drink keeping the enjoyment mostly to myself.

nicotine addiction is a really strange thing. It is fundamentally physical - your body gets used to it and starts requesting it - but your mind is what gives it power. As an example, the vast majority of smokers don't wake up in the middle of the night craving a smoke. But, ask those same smokers to not smoke for 6-8 hours during the day and they would go crazy.

What happens is that your mind has lots of ideas about when you need a smoke - After meals, after sex, stress, boredom, drinking, at work, just got off work, etc, etc. They are different for everyone. When you are doing something you don't normally associate with smoking, your mind is really good at ignoring the physical signals for nicotine. But when you are in a smoking activity, those signals come in at mega strength. After a while it becomes a cycle - you think you need to smoke so you do, and that is reinforced by satisfying the physical piece.

Once you try and quit, the physical side is again very minor, but your mind will take every single thing it can find to convince you need a smoke.

To be clear, I am 100% certain that if you could brainwash a smoker and make them forget they had ever smoked while they were sleeping that night, they would never even notice the craving. They might feel a bit off when they woke up the next day - withdrawal symptoms vary and again, are likely driven more by the mind - but nothing that would prevent them from going about their normal life.

To use a poker analogy, it's a lot like a coin flip - one part of your mind knows it's ~50/50 every time, but when you've been running bad some other dumb part shows up that is convinced it isn't. Knowing it's 50/50 and feeling it's 50/50 are different things.

Everyone's body and mind are different, I knew one guy who could smoke for a week then quit for 3 months with no issue.

@ Cigars, most of the mental cigarette triggers are learned from peers/society. So you are better off there in terms of addiction risk.

I never liked cigars so I can't speak to the enjoyment you get vs the risk you take.

But generically, deciding to introduce nicotine into your life is a bad idea.

In health terms as long as you don't inhale I think it's not so bad - mouth cancer, etc. By far the biggest risk to your health will that time you're out drinking and have no cigars, so you decide to start bumming smokes from your buddy...

qft! been there done that! fwiw I haven't smoked anything since november. Sometimes I think a cigar now and again would be ok but because the above rings so true to me I do have my doubts.
