Could somebody answer me this: how is Nuck not in handcuffs? Hasn't the new fed seen more than enough to put him away for a long time? Why is the fed gallivanting around with Nuck but not doing anything? What could Eli give him that he wouldn't already have on Nuck? |

As bikes said, he's trying to bring down the entire syndicate. All of what you're saying just means that Knox dies this season. He's pretty clearly running his own operation and J Edgar could give a fuck so all thats gonna happen is Eli flipping back to Nucky and them putting Knox down. The end scene where Eli accepts that this is the life that his son wants seems to portend this as well. It might be that Eli sacrifices himself to kill Knox and make sure nothing splashes back on Nucky and crew.

I thought the writing for Knox was great. He mentioned the book that inspired him to be in law enforcement. He doesn't really care about doing the right thing, or what's just. He cares about the procedure. He's like Hans Landa-- he didn't care about jews, or Nazi ideology really, he just loved the hunt.

I think I have a hard time with rankings, because BWE and GoT, to me, are in a different category that BB. Not a better or worse one-- but they are expertly done novels on the screen. BB on the other hand is just excellent TV.

I also don't rate mini-series, which it appears Utopia is. I guess I'd have to include Sherlock on either the OITNB/Downton level or SoA level, but not quite sure since every ep is a mini movie |

British shows are generally filmed as "series". Several years may go by before the next "series" is broadcast. Utopia series 1 has already aired, and series 2 has been filmed, or at least the first half of it has. Also, three to six episode series are far more common. So, yeah, while it's different, I don't really think it makes sense to classify Utopia as a mini series.

I love that the writers offered Gillian redemption, right before utterly soul crushing her. Also, the bait and switch with the nephew looking like the one who had it out for Chalky the whole episode. Makes for a strong nuanced character-- both jealous of Chalky, but admires him and his uncle too much to be anything but loyal to him.

What a weird episode. Am I the only one who was on edge the entire ep just knowing its the penultimate and thats usually when the shit goes down? Guess that's next week this season. I loved all the Chalky and Nucky stuff. Stephen Root obviously delivers. Can't wait for next week.

I could be mistaken, but I think Boardwalk typically does the traditional finale, as opposed to The Wire finale. I'm like 95% sure Harrow's shooting spree and the battle were in the finale last season, and I think Jimmy caught it in the finale in s02...
11-18-2013 09:54 AM

| |
But, yeah, I still was on edge with the whole Chalky plot. He's been in serious danger over and over the last few eps, and each time I honestly believe it could be his time to go. Keeping that sort of tension going with a lead character's mortality is not easy.

It would be some crazy 5th/7th/9th level storytelling if Eli doesn't die this season.
11-23-2013 01:27 AM
#272
| |
Nah, I think Knox can easily die this season and Eli just breath a sigh of relief, wipe his brow, and carry on. I could be wrong, but I feel like the conflict hasn't quite happened yet in that arc, so I'm really curious to see how they resolve it with only one episode to go.
11-23-2013 01:48 AM

|
For a show that can make Chalky look like he's gonna die two episodes in a row, I think they can pull off making Eli look like he's gonna die yet somebody else dies instead. That said, I still think Eli dies. Knox might also die. Harrow never dies. If he does, then there was no purpose for him approaching Nuck or marrying that chick. Giggly guy could die, but I feel like he's a prop that the writers want to keep around, because whenever they want a 20s stereotype, they use him |
11-23-2013 01:57 AM
#274
| |
I think the only reason he doesn't die is cause they kind of already did it with Kessler. But I really just feel like from the tone of that scene at the end of last-last week's episode with Eli, Will, and Nucky that Eli's about to buy the farm.

It's an interesting idea. All the big deaths I can think of have been written into the story. There are a variety of reasons for this, but a big one is that the writers have to put in effort for their material, so if they create a plot that depends on one character then kill him, they've wasted valuable time and energy. I think we see this in all the big shows of recent |

I have no idea what they're gonna do with Capone. I don't think he can kill Torrio so quickly now that they would have only one ep for him to even realize it was him. I also don't know how Torrio died IRL, but don't care. I expected the latest ep to go gangbusters on the Capone storyline, but we got nothing, so I don't know what to think |

Dat Harrow. Y'all were right. The only thing standing in the way of Harrow death was that one thing he had to do for Nucky, and he died right after he did it. They did an amazing job with his ending |

I have no heard of this TV series, but I know it's a cop one. I'm not a fan of these but might watch it after the current ones I'm watching. The Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are more important . So hoping it's a good cop series the only other ones that I've watched was The Bill, a UK cop TV series back in the late 90s early 2000's |

Torrio had to go out now. There's a good chance time passes between seasons, and it wouldn't make sense for the hand off to take place next season. Next season is all about Capone empire building imo.
