Default Bill that would end the internet as we know it

PROTECT IP Act Breaks the Internet

Protect IP Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stop Online Piracy Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If this passes, this forum will most likely have to shut down since it makes owners liable for user links, as would youtube, google, blogs, and pretty much any sort of free access/social media. Big Content would basically completely control the internet, and really the only websites left would be ones with zero open user access.

This worries me but am very skeptical of it's passing.

I would hope pretty much every service provider in the world would hate for this to happen no? Would that not cost them a fortune as users plummet?
  4. #4
Yeah some companies have made moves against this. Google recently left the Chamber of Commerce I think (or threatened to) over this, and Yahoo did a while back. Not sure about Comcast, but that could be very scary since mergers like Comcast/NBC are ripe for internet tyranny

I'm only slightly skeptical of its passage. If we don't stomp it out, it will only grow, and the worst shit always seems to get passed. Also, this will have devastating consequences on non-US countries. In stuff like this, where US goes, so does the rest of the world.
  5. #5
wait, how would this be bad for other countries? Wouldn't they just laugh at America and continue, business as usual? How does American law dictate what some blogger in Germany posts?

I don't know details of how it works, but basically internets would need to be segregated from US. At first there would be a ton of issues of US stepping bounds and hassling foreign businesses and servers and whatnot. Also, US policy on lots of stuff dictates foreign policy. It's hard to say why, but using the drug war as an example, a lot of experts have stated that the rest of the industrialized world has to hold off on progressing drug policy due to US. I honestly don't remember why though, just that it happens.

One way of looking at it could be in that other nations didn't really go about passing protectionist online poker laws until the US did UIGEA. It would suggest that if US passed this draconian shit, you'd start seeing it happen in smaller countries, as that's often how it works

Is it not bizarrely cocky that the video seems to feel that all blocking would be at DNS level so entering the IP address of a website would still take you there?

It also sweeps in a separate bill, sponsored in the Senate by Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), to make it a felony to stream videos or mp3s of copyrighted films and songs.
You guys are crazy. You should move from the land of the free to the land of the freer than your criminalized ass, Qatar.

FWIW, the response to this bill has been excellent. The tumblr thing is a fantastic development, and representative of this type of thing not being passable. Repubs like Darrel Issa saying what he said is pretty big deal

SOPA opponents may go nuclear and other 2012 predictions | Privacy Inc. - CNET News

The question is whether Hollywood SOPA proponents are extremely dumb or extremely smart. We already know there is no evidence to suggest that piracy (known as "heroing" among the well-informed) harms sales, and that the evidence actually suggests the opposite. We already know that the heroing software was designed and distributed by the very same companies that claim it's bad, and we already know that heroing benefits artists substantially more than oligopolists (which is terrible for those oligopolists due to relying on institutional oppression of non-oligopolists in order to sustain their oligopolies)

So the question is either: are they so fucking stupid that they waste money on trying to stop heroing or are they so greedy they want everything? The former is totally legit because these kind of businesses do not achieve success based on savvy, but on institutional unfairness and predatory reactions. So the probability of them being dumbshits is pretty high. But then on the flip side, the reliance on predatory reactions engenders the ruthlessness it takes to plan a long game of establishing themselves as the commerce overlords of the future by secretly promoting heroing, then demonizing the behavior, then passing draconian legislation that gives them everything and then some.

this bill is complete bs. but comon man that is the biggest load of shit ive heard. wonder why you only get shitty sequels of blockbuster movies nowadays; piracy. why music studios only invest in guarenteed sales shitty x factor type music; piracy. why computer games actually are still getting better; they can actually sell those units. im guilty as anyone for pirating stuff, i havent bought music for years. and guess reduction in sales leads to reduction in quality of the media.

    but fuck that bill, really

what shitty sales? ones caused by reductions in purchasing power of consumers or ones caused by shitty products and shitty services? piracy is not lost sales, not by a long shot. the debate has been framed by people who do not care about anything other than their pomposity and prejudices.

'piracy' actually helps content businesses, but don't tell that the large reactionary establishment who couldnt create art or conduct retail out of a paper bag unless they already control the channels

Blackout Wednesday: The Time Has Come

The Internet happens to be where ideas and information are the most liberated and has been THE source for economic growth in the present era. Tons of people have innovated and profited from this. If sales are down for Big Content then it's only evidence that they have failed to innovate and compete.

Thanks for the article. I'm a search marketer and web developer and it really worries the fuck out of me that the government will be sticking their goddamn noses in the middle of Google's business and telling them how and what to rank. Social media being threatened is a fucking nightmare... bye-bye referring traffic and back links. What's next? Are they going to throw me in jail for playing online poker too? JFC maybe I'll start a pet sitting business and play with dogs all day instead.

PIPA Weakens as SOPA Gets Hypocritical - Forbes

SOPA author's website uses an image without the permission of the photographer.
  27. #27
Yeah SOPA/PIPA are not about piracy. The companies know that it doesn't hurt sales. The bills are for the purpose of commerce and content control by oligopolies

Megaupload just got shut down. Jesus Christ people. Control your government. They seem to have forgotten that they are acting on your behalf. You have the right to bear arms, it's about time you used them.

Dear god you americanos, banning poker, banning internet. What the fuck is wrong with you? Its like second coming of Hitler. You are like the WORST ever, always in wrong place in wrong time. Maybe if you tried focusing your efforts in destroying Chinese economy, which btw if grows further will conquer the world, and before you know it, the whole globe will talk and write Chinese, and you will be unable to ban anything anymore because you still learn french in schools and have no idea what all those signs mean.

    Americans learn French in schools?

    Destroying the Chinese economy?
  35. #35
    Spanish?
  36. #36
Spanish and French were the two main languages available for me in school. Once in high school, we could then pick from a litany of languages; but I think this wide selection of language courses at the secondary level was an exception, not the norm.

So if the us of a can already shut down foreign websites and arrest the owners on foreign soil for piracy related crimes, ie Megaupload, what's the justification for sopa/pipa?

For me it was compulsory in middle school for I think 2 or 3 years. In high school it is optional. I am an idiot and did not chose to take a language. I pretty much wasted four years of my life.

the original purpose of copyright was for public benefit of innovations i.e. incentivize people to not hold their innovations to the grave, and thus lose the innovation "forever". ofc this has been bastardized into protecting plutocratic dictatorial powers; which is the exact opposite

never underestimate the ability for plutocrats to steal from a society while convincing that society that its the society which is stealing from them. artists and technological development thrive under "piracy". anytime you have paradigm shifts where control leaves the few and goes to the many, you have cultural and economic benefits. but that doesn't mean the "let them eat cake" class likes the change
