I just installed the sims 3 with all the expansions not being Into the Future. I can't believe how complex the sims as a whole has gotten during the years. In limited playing, I can't say it's complex good, just complex.

I bought deathspank. Not bad, my sort of humor. Nice pacing, nice art style, best played with a controller imo.

Deal ends in like 7 hours so if you want it for a dollar be quick

There's a game called Desktop Dungeons on steam that I used to play in the beta. It was a fun game when I played, but not worth any money. Though, it taught me that good games were often called 'roguelikes' like Rogue Legacy and FTL. The central mechanic being randomly generated worlds where if you die you start over, but you can still grow through all of the deaths.

Also, I'd buy Desktop Dungeons for android to play on my phone, where it's really suited since a game lasts for 10 mins max.

I used to have some NFL type game where you could build a character and go through their life as a player as them but like 8 years ago. Are there any good NFL games where you can do similar on 360 that will be reasonably cheap?

Being up to date and all that isn't that important because I don't have a fucking clue about NFL. I just remember them being fun to play.

Video Game tip of the day:
Superhexagon is on Steam Autum sale for $0.6 or $1 for a 2-pack. I suggest you buy the two pack and gift both copies to friends you don't like very much.

At the same time, there are people who strictly prefer the xbox1 over the ps4, so people are obviously dumb. I'm just waiting for Bethesda to tell me which runs Fallout 4 the best.

And I'm betting it's my laptop.

I find most roguelikes to be overwhelming, but I found this great one called Cataclysm DDA. It's probably the most realistic portrayal of a zombie apocalypse I've yet to see in a video game. Fucking brutal game.

    edit: It's a text-roguelike with a crappy tileset so don't expect graphics.

I'm currently playing Hotline Miami and Papers Please. Haven't had that much fun playing single player games in a long time. Hotline Miami is currently 90% off on steam. Both manage to tell a story, not through cutscenes and dialogues, but by what's actually happening to you in the game. I don't know why this is innovative.

I don't get this. Why don't people just buy an instrument and learn to play it? Especially when these things first came out, it wasn't that much cheaper to buy the game vs low end instruments.

Because you can pretend you're playing along to your favourite songs in 5 minutes not have to put in years of practise. Pretty obvious really.

I haven't played it, but Rocksmith gets a lot of praise. It's basically guitar hero, but you can pluck in real instruments so you can also pretend that you're learning an instrument while you pretend to play that song.

Because, while I can play guitar and bass, I suck at the drums. I'm good at finger dexterity, but not so much at arms and legs dexterity. That said, I enjoy the hell out of playing the drums, even though I'm terrible at them.

Using a game is fun, gets a friend involved and takes the stress out of being loud and annoying out of it.

I played it once at my buddy's place, and I guess it was on some 'easy mode' where you don't actually play the full chords, because I was playing a song I actually know how to play and it told me I was doing it wrong

I was pretty wasted at the time though so that mighta had something to do with it.

Well the guitar/bass stuff is just Dance Dance Revolution with your fingers instead of your feet. It's a hand-eye coordination game that doesn't resemble playing actual instruments really at all. The drums on the other hand are great fun and quite closely emulate the act of playing real drums without having to own a huge basement in an isolated area and pay thousands of dollars. IMO its a great way to get into drums for someone who doesn't have the money or space to commit quite yet.

I just thought of a video game mechanic that I'm sure has been thought of, but I've never seen:

You basically level your character's ability with common commodities in the world. You learn how to cast fireball with sage, and recall with sage, and speed with sage, but like you can only cast teleport with a bat's wing, and if you get better with bat's wing magic, you can eventually teleport other people and spells and shit. In an MMORPG, that itemspell class's power would be measured by the free market.

Usually items are recipes for spells and shit in games, but you don't necessarily become an expert with certain plants or items or shit. I want to see wizards become experts with sage and parsley and shit.

    Blizzard plz.

so do you have to keep buying the item to level up that skill? how does it work. does buying x amount of sage necessarily level you up x times, or are there ways to get more or less out of the same quantity of sage?

Yeah... If you just keep doing the same thing with all your sage, do you actually acquire skills? I've been doing the same thing with mine for a long time now, and while I do feel magical at times... I think it's just the sage.

Well I was pretty baked when I came up with this so I didn't think all this through, but you could make it either level your itemskill by choice as your character levels (put more points into sage), or make it level by use of that item (using sage-based spells increases your sage abilities). I guess you could also have it that there's a sage class you have to take that costs money (or sage).

I think I like leveling itemskill by item use the best

interesting. i typed like a million different things based how you could structure that concept into a game but i guess at the end of the day it doesn't really matter, lol.

i will say that Digital Devil Saga had one of the most enjoyable skill learning systems ever. those shin megami tensei people get it right pretty much always.

I recently reinstalled DosBox so that I could play the most awesome rpg game ever: Darklands (Microprose, 1992). Loosely set in medieval Germany with robber knights and some fantasy elements such as dragons, elves, demons. No "magic" per say, but there is alchemy for potions (healing, damaging, disabling, weapon/armor buffs), as well as praying to various saints for divine aide. It was the game which pioneered "real time" combat, using space bar to pause and issue orders. Baldur's Gate 6 years later made great use of this mechanic.

The best part is there is no character levelling. When you start off making a character, you choose their background eg rural commoner with more base stats to distribute, nobility with more skill points, etc. And then choose their life path such as soldier (high amounts of skill points for weapons skills), labourer (retains higher strength/health), student (more skill points for intellectual pursuits), monk, etc. Characters start at the age of 20, and you can keep choosing life paths (adds 5 years to their age) and giving them more skill points based on the path you choose. As age increases, strength and endurance get lower.

When you're ready you choose to start adventuring, the actual game. Throughout the game you can only increase your skills by actually using them. You can have a bunch of meathead warriors with a maxed out weapons class. But if you are trying to do a quest which requires stealth, woodwise, climbing or streetwise skills, you're probably boned.

A must play if you were a fan of old school dos rpg games such as AD&D gold box games, Baldur's Gate, etc. There are some bugs in it and a bit of a steep learning curve, but its worth it if you can put up with cutting edge 1992 graphics. Changing your desktop resolution to 800x600 helps, but the window will still take up take up less than half your monitor.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

... about as high as all the rest of the time ...? So ... mostly to thoroughly, I guess.

Sure, the humor in this game would appeal to people who like tha chronic. I think there was a town with a guy named "Bong" who sold potions and stuff? Visionary and classic at the same time.

Hearthstone is excellent. I think the Beta is completely open at this point. I applied for a Beta key a few months back, and Agnes did at the same time. She got her key first, but when I got my key it came in an email that said everyone who applied for a key got one.

Sadly, my laptop's onboard graphics chipset can't handle it, so it's just too choppy and frustrating to play. A dialogue with one of the customer service reps pinned down the problem to my hardware. I uninstalled it, but only because it was running at ~2 - 4 FPS.

Agnes has a newer laptop, and it plays on hers. It's a supremely fun game, like a stripped down, approachable version of Magic: The Gathering.

So I tried Arena for the first time last night and was murdered. There were some rare cards I've never seen before. Should I stick to completing quests and unlocking decks for awhile? It was only 1 match so I am making quick judgments on a small sample size.

As far as I can tell, arena is only +ev for great players, so save your gold for packs. Your first free arena run is worth it obv cuz you get a pack out of it. I went 1-3 my first and only arena run as I suck. You get gold for beating every normal AI, then every expert AI, then unlocking all cards for all classes (lvl10 everyone), as well as the daily quests and a few other things (100 games played or won in a mode) etc etc.

As far as I can tell, you don't need to be a master deck builder outside the arena to be good in the arena, but you DO need a thorough understanding of the game mechanics and general options available for each hero.

So just how well did you do in your first arena run?

I did not get a chance to do arena run. I couldn't even get past the tutorial matches on my craptop.

I made that statement based on having watched a bunch of youtube videos of people doing arena runs. From what I can gather, the draft system hobbles anyone from assembling a really well thought out deck. If you have a basic idea of what your hero can do, and you draw cards to support that, with a willingness to change your plan if you get certain epic or legendary cards on early draws, then you can put together a powerhouse. After that, it comes down to top decking and having the understanding of when to hold back and when to rush.

I saw a video where someone made a deck with 6 Blood Imps in it. This was before they nerfed the blood imps. That deck wrecked simply due to the fact that the draft kept offering a cheap card with stealth that has an excellent recurring ability. There is no rule to cap the number of duplicate cards in a deck in arena, which is my point... If you know the mechanics, you can take advantage and gain a huge edge.

    Thought I responded to this!

So xbox 360...you might need to figure out what he has but the following games would all be solid:

Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas
    Skyrim
    Call of Duty Ghosts
    Assassin's Creed Black Flag
    Diablo 3
    Bioshock Infinite

One possibly cool gift could be a pre-order of Titanfall. It comes out in March. The risk here is that it was developed for the new xbox console but will also publish a downgraded version for the xbox 360. The jury is still out on whether the 360 versions of xbox one games will be good.

Practical gifts could be an xbox live year subscription or a gift certificate for xbox live arcade games (where you tell him to buy a few of Bastion, Limbo, State of Decay, and The Walking Dead, don't starve).

Thanks for reminding me about Bastion. What a beautiful experience.

I forget the exact quote, but:

"The kid didn't know how do deal with all this, so he just hacked and smashed at the world for a bit."
