Half Life 2 is what got me back into FPS games after I had outgrown Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64. In my opinion it was superior to Bioshock on the XBOX due to how it kept you on edge at every turn. A+ classic for sure. Have fun with your re-playthrough.

Was able to play some portal 2 co op with Luco yesterday. I didn't realize I had a big gaping hole in my life until I played it. If you thought solo mode was fun...

PSA: If you're going to watch TI4 this weekend, go watch it over at the noob stream at: http://www.twitch.tv/dota2ti_noob/ or switch to the noob casters in your Dota2 client. The noob stream has more entertaining, more factual and much better casters all around.

Sigh... yet another COD session where I get pwned by 8 year olds. As Danny Glover would say, "I'm getting too old for this sh**."

If anyone wants to add me for Dark Souls II or BattleBlock Theater PvP, my XBOX Live name is joshuahubermex (my 10-year-old son's account).

I genuinely don't know what type of info you want here.

Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Intel Core i2-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz, some aidsy inbuilt laptop graphics card.

Most recent games I've bought and been able to play are Rogue Legacy and Don't Starve. Fallout 3 (I think) failed miserably due to graphics card as did an old C&C game also due to graphics card.

Not being able to play Fallout 3 is an unreal bad beat.

Edit: Maybe try to pick up a real cheap XBOX360? That game was a lot of fun. Plus, 360 can play the suite of Bethesda games, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, New Vegas.

As for games your comp might be able to run: Braid, Papers Please, Spelunky

edit edit: Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics?

Finished Arkham Origins. Currently playing Antichamber:

I described it last night as 'portal on acid' and although it feels like it could be a shortish game it's been cool so far. Won't spoil it too much...

Hey about time I found a video game thread, what games you guys looking forward to coming out soon? I just bought a Wii u so anything Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda for me. Also I was a huge fan of the uncharted games for PS3 (sucks the new one is for PS4 only) and I love medieval games such as Elder Scrolls and Dragon age (New Dragon age next month).

I've been playing Hotline Miami and Papers Please on and off. These are amazing if you need a time filler. If you have a thousand hours to spend on a video game, nothing beats Dota2. It is clearly the best game ever made, but it takes an absurd amount of game knowledge to play properly. 108 heroes with ~5 unique abilities each and 128 items and the more you learn about it the more you realize you know nothing. NOTHING! also: you will be sodomized.

Dragon age origins is still on my yet-to-play list so it will be a long time before I get around to the new one. Uncharted series is amazing and I'm actually playing The Last of Us at the moment. I will get a Wii U in about 6-12 months when it's dead and selling for pennies

Antichamber was indeed short but fun while it lasted. Currently playing:

    PC - Bioshock 1
PS3 - The Last of Us

    Both ridiculously good so far

I'm in the same situation as ImSavy. I can't even run Hearthstone on my laptop, so it's not just 3D games that have trouble.

I can play Morrowind, but not Oblivion or later.

    Some games I've enjoyed:

    Plants vs Zombies
    Don't Starve
    FTL
And a blast from the past: Age of Empires II (w/ all expansions and AoFE)

Lately, I'm messing around with Minecraft, but I don't know if running an open world sandbox survival game at 10 FPS is going to be fun for you.
I basically use Minecraft as a CPU simulator, though, with the mobs turned off. Also, without a couple of mods installed, I would not even be getting 10 FPS, so there's that.

Those are all very different games, but I don't know what you're in the mood for, Savy, so I don't have a specific recommendation.
  32. #707
budget laptops have come so far in the last couple of years, it's surprising what the integrated graphics on a haswell i3 / i5 will run (HD4600)

Also, AMD's APUs are nailing it right now - specifically the A8 and A10 series.

I've not played Plants vs Zombies, may check it out. The others I've played & enjoyed too, with the exception of AoE which I've just never really got into.

If you're not played rogue legacy that was really enjoyable too MMM.

This is a great month for video games:

    1) Civilization: Beyond Earth: it's basically a revive of Alpha Centauri (one of the greatest strategy games ever) with the Civ 5 interface.

    2) Median XL Ultimative version XV: I mentioned this earlier in the thread, it's an extensive mod to Diablo 2 and he's about to release a massive patch with like 25 new skills and tons of new quests and maps.

and random mention: I found this sick game created by a poker player called Aurora.

It's an unbelievably complex 4x game. You start off with with a civilization on earth that has just discovered trans-newtonian elements and the ability to travel FTL. It's like a turn-based space colonization game but much more complicated, as the turns can elapse a length of time anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 days. The solar system is modeled with extreme attention to detail, you can mine real asteroids or comets, you can terraform Mars or even Venus (which takes literally 100s or 1000s of years depending on your tech). You have to design every aspect of your ships from the engines to the turrets to the fucking missiles. How much fuel does the missile have, how powerful is its thruster, how fast of a ship can it hit, does it have a second stage (i.e. something that detaches from the missile during flight like electronic warfare or a dozen baby-missiles, etc)? Obviously you can leave the Sol system and find jump points to other systems to colonize, and there are AI civilizations as well as roaming hostile ships with no allegiance to anyone. The time system is so ridiculous as you can click the "advance 30 days" button and a an entire war can transpire between off-screen AI races that threatens to crash your computer.

This game is so ridiculous that I haven't even scratched the surface of it, and I'm not sure I have the time or intelligence to.

I very rarely give single player games a chance, but I've made an exception for Alien Isolation and so far I'm not disappointed. It's not anything new or innovative, but every little aspect of it is just extremely well done. I'm not sure I'll have the patience to get to the end of it, but so far I'm really enjoying it. Although if you're thinking of getting it, it will most likely be slightly discounted during the Steam Halloween sale, so wait for that.

PVZ is deceptively engaging. It's not much of a challenge unless you go full geek into the "endless" special stages.
"Vasebreaker Endless" and "I, Zombie Endless" are seriously challenging if you want them to be.

Rogue Legacy is great. I can't remember how long it's been since a 2D platformer game was that good.

I bought myself an xbox 360 controller last week. I pretty much only bought it for one game, but I love this thing so much I started to look specifically for games I could play while laying motionless on the couch. I'm sure this is old news for most of you, but these things are amazing. Especially if you have your pc hooked up to a TV with Steam in big picture mode.
Highly recommended. Only downside is I don't have many games that support it. I finished A Tale of two Sons and replayed Limbo and now I'm out of games.

    FTL is great.

I've been crushing them damn rebels for over a year. Not that the Empire deserves it. I risk my life and the lives of my brave, occasionally slave trading, and usually murderous crew to bring the most valuable piece of information in the galaxy to my noble leaders and they're all... "We're busy and stuff, so can you just deal with that for us? Thanks. Here's some bottle rockets, now run along."

At the risk of stating the obvious, multi platform games are your friend - although it's worth checking the quality of the PC version / port before buying. Speaking strictly in terms of port quality some are excellent (Sleeping dogs), some are lazy (Darksiders 1 & 2), and some are absolutely awful (Trials evolution, lol ubisoft). Also, if you play battlefield you should definitely consider using the controller for the helis and jets. Battleblock theatre and Castle Crashers are also very controller friendly

The first time Bigred and I played portal 2 together I told him I was using a controller instead of KB/M and he was like "...ew." For portal at least, he had a point. KB/M is way easier

I want to try playing a low intelligence character as apparently you get some hilarious dialog choices, but I'd miss all the bonus skill points.

I've been messing around with 1.7.2 since the legacy mods are all still "dev only" for 1.7.10.

If you're into mods, which ones top your "must have" list?

Oh and another game from 2007 that I'm currently working through is Metroid Prime 3 for the wii. It's pretty good.

Dat 480p tho... every time I boot it up it's like 'dayum, dose jaggies'

I just run vanilla. I used to play a long time ago where the newest features were the sandstone block and the nether but I've been off it for a while. After a few attempts to explore again, I've found a really interesting spot.

My vanilla world on 1.7.2 is pretty developed. It took me ages to find a village. On one of my excursions, I found a Red Mesa biome and it was amazing.

    If you're into automated stuff:

I have a sugar farm that's fully automatic. It has 14 sugar reeds along 2 sides of a water channel. The sugar is chopped off every day at sundown by pistons. The redstone bit is a daylight sensor into a comparator with a weak signal to compare against. The output from the comparator goes into an off-edge pule limiter, which powers the repeaters which drive the pistons. The pistons push any sugar that has grown during the past day into the central water trough, which flows to the front of the building, into a hopper and into a chest. The chest is at ground level in the front center of the building, for easy collection.

The weak signal to the comparator is adjusted so that the pistons fire at the moment that the game allows the sleep mechanic. So it doubles as an alarm to let me know that it's night.

The off-edge pulse limiter is something I found online, but the rest of the build is all me.

so yeah, got a new laptop that can run basically any game out there, yay. i replayed the original deus ex some time back because i remembered loving it in my high school years, so got a copy of dx human revolution, pretty neat, still think the original has that dark mood that is somewhat lost by the obvious metal gear solid influences in the new game. still, good game. anyway, if that gives you an idea of what gaming genre i enjoy, what do you guys recommend i check out?

Also, if you play battlefield you should definitely consider using the controller for the helis and jets. Battleblock theatre and Castle Crashers are also very controller friendly

The first time Bigred and I played portal 2 together I told him I was using a controller instead of KB/M and he was like "...ew." For portal at least, he had a point. KB/M is way easier
I got Tomb Raider. It's fucking amazing with a controller. I never thought I would prefer a controller with a game like this, but it's so well implemented.

It's third person action adventure, controller sounds ideal!

Tomb Raider is already in my steam library (backlog, lol), so you're enjoying it then? I have to say action adventure / third person / open world is my fave genre so I'm almost certainly going to love TR when I get around to it

I'm usually not for story driven games. I'm probably not going back to Alien Isolation because it drags itself out too much. I played like 15 min. of the new Wolfenstein and hated how it forced you through the levels. I did eventually get through the Walking Dead, but I'm not a fan of how obvious it is that your choices don't influence anything. That game saves itself by having a great story though.

The pacing of Tomb Raider is perfect. You kill some things, then you move on to the next cutscene. There are no endless wave of enemies, not everyone you meet is hostile. You can make somewhat strategic decisions. You get just the right level of: do you want to explore, or just get on with it? The acting and animation is good enough that I have no desire to mash the skip button. The camera movement is very well done. It feels almost like playing a 2&1/2 D platformer. you hardly need to control the camera at all. The only other game I remember that used camera movement like that was the first Silent Hill. It's not quite the same level of genius, but it's very good.

Only about 1hr in, but so far I'm loving it. To mention the obvious: you get to look at a very nice cgi butt for the entire game. An underused asset in video games if I may say so myself.

Has anyone played The Witcher 2? Just picked up that bad boy for $10, so far it's really fun.

I'm still playing Firefall, Kerbal Space Program, and Don't Starve for the most part. Haven't felt a need to get anything new.

Kerbal Space Program seems like something I could either sink a lot of time into, or play for 5 min. and then never play again. I've had it in my wishlist for forever and I'm still waiting for a big enough discount.

I'm kind of in between games atm. I've played about an hour of Shadow Warrior, which didn't seem like the game I would like but it was 90% off, so I got it anyway. it's super fast paced first person sword fighting with very good mechanics, and it looks gorgeous. I have weird performance issues so I probably won't finish it. What I'd really like is another Game like the most recent Tomb Raider to pass the time until Legacy of the Void gets released.

I've had both experiences with KSP. You need to be ready to spend a lot of time building and analyzing your rockets, getting to a planet to not have enough fuel to get back with all your science captured, explosions everywhere, etc, etc. I stopped playing regularly after a quick save glitch where my kerbal went jetpack skiing down a crater hillside on the Mun and bounced to his death. When I quick loaded back to pre skiing incident my kerbel had disappeared. Hours of landing and taking off on different regions of the Mun to collect science wiped by a glitch. But sitting on the crater hillside prior to the sliding incident and taking pictures of the earth on the horizon was one of my favorite video game moments.

KSP is excellent because it makes a lot of attempts to get the physics true to reality. I like that it teaches orbital mechanics to people in such a fun way that people don't know that they're actually learning physics.

Whether or not you learn why it takes less fuel to get to orbit when you turn to East @ 45 degrees of vertical, you know that it does take less fuel.

Whether or not you learn why it takes less fuel to change an orbit at apogee, you know that is the ideal location to do so.

    In minecraft news:
I've been playing vanilla (unmodded) minecraft 1.8.1 lately.

Over the past few days I made a storage building that I'm rather happy with.
It sits on a 3x3 footprint (5x5 with walls surrounding it).
It holds 59 inventory slots (1 double chest and 1 hopper) per level of height (ground level holds redstone clicker which drives input pump).
It has a vertical indicator rail on the outside wall indicating how full the building is.
The input is at the bottom level, and can be on any side relative to the output (available at eye level).
It automatically pumps input up to the top of the building and drops it in the hopper/double chest stack, which shifts all inputs back to the output.
    It is fully tile-able vertically.

Picked up Call of Duty Ghosts for $10, came with a 7 day xbox live pass, had a ton of fun playing Extinction mode for hours, definitely got my moneys worth on that one. Great prices going on right now, if guys are waiting on a certain game.
