owned. I think my friends think I'm addicted. I asked if any of them wanted a £250 Amazon voucher because I wanted the cash for FPP bonus and they said are you really that addicted?

Haha, I got this before too. My parents knew I played poker online and didn't like it. So obviously they had discussions about it amongst themselves about how they didn't like it but never said anything to me. I didn't live at home so they had never seen me play. Then when I was in the process of moving to another town I set my house up for renters before the end of the month but I had no place to live until I moved so I had to crash with them for a couple weeks.

Then I was playing online one day and my mom comes into the room is like, "OMG you play 6 tables?? I didn't know you were that addicted!"

I get the same thing, my wife sees me multitabling, and says: wow, that's really bad, you're playing 4 tables at once, I try to explain that it improves my hourly amount won, but she's still sceptical. For some reason people see more than 1 table and think it's bad news, wtf is that about?

I quit my full-time job last March to take up Poker. My birthday is in May, and I got a birthday card from my grandfather where he called me a "lost soul."

I've been with my gf for nearly four years now. Her mother knows what I do. She fights with her probably twice a month about how I'm a bum addicted to gambling gonna loose my monies and end up in hell.

She says she's willing herself to one day tell her dad..... old school traditional religious Portugese, you know the drill.

I'll never go through an intervention with my family. The current running joke is that I'm the baller in the family. My younger brother loves poker, so he was never an issue in converting. My father was skeptical because online gambling can be very dangerous. Then one day I showed him a graph and now he promotes is. My mom is slowly coming around (a lot of help from her sister I believe). It's her that I think I want to really make proud because she worries most out of the three.

haha, yeah, this. I've come to accept that I had a gambling problem, but I was lucky to experience one or some combination of the scenarios you mentioned. Also, while I still support legal online gambling, I personally do know that I pretty much never would drive the 30 minutes it takes to get to the casino (I think I have twice in the 8 or so years since I started playing poker), but I definitely would play online at least once a week if it were legal. So you know, despite the phrases comical hyperbole, there's at least a little truth to "click the mouse, lose the house."

Yeah, I'm not even sure what a gambling problem would feel like, but I'm virtually certain I don't and have never had one. I feel like I see enough of it all around me among poker players constantly that I'd know the difference.

edit: not meaning to be high and mighty here, I'd be honestly curious to know what the symptoms are so I'll have a heads up if/when it happens to me

Yeah, I'm not even sure what a gambling problem would feel like, but I'm virtually certain I don't and have never had one. I feel like I see enough of it all around me among poker players constantly that I'd know the difference.

edit: not meaning to be high and mighty here, I'd be honestly curious to know what the symptoms are so I'll have a heads up if/when it happens to me
I feel that people who are addicted to gambling are usually addicted to the *thrill* of having money on the line; of the high they get when they think about how much they can make if they get lucky just this one time.

That is the exact opposite of what I felt in my poker playing heyday. I was a total nit moving up the stakes because I hated risking more money than I had felt accustomed to; I hated the variance; I felt a dull thump in my stomach that moment I realized that 400bbs were riding on whether or not a diamond hit, etc. I mean, obviously, as I became more "professional" with my poker playing I learned cared less and less about this stuff and got to the point where I barely took notice which of the 75/25s I was winning and losing, but that was kind of my basal, visceral reaction.

If there were any thrill I got, it wasn't from the money stuff (which stressed me out); it was from the ego fuel.

Though, of course, addiction could come in many shapes and sizes, and there certainly are more subdued, self-assured type of gamblers who think they're the best and will quit once they get all their losses back, only to slowly dig their own hole deeper and deeper.

Yeah, I mean, it's definitely a spectrum and not a linear two dimensional one. I do like the thrill, but I strangely get almost zero thrill out of casino games. I think more than anything it's the thrill of competition, and I don't get that playing black jack.

The reason I feel I have a problem is that I have, on multiple occasions, played for way longer than I had planned, chased losses, and gone over self imposed limits. I can get into a one track state of mind-- I'm prone to becoming fixated on things. It's really a competitive thing though, but when the competition involves betting it turns into a gambling problem. Or at least that's where I'm currently at with my self analysis, maybe others have some different insights?

This is exactly how I am. I have a very addictive/obsessive personality in general. Just look at the thousands of words I just posted in the abortion thread; I stayed up til 3 in the morning reading and making notes on the thread and then woke up at 8am and wrote my responses basically non-stop until nowish. You think that maybe there were other things I should have been doing? This is how I was with poker: staying up all hours of the night arguing hand histories, spending entire lectures in my grad school classes writing out ranges and maths and event trees and such, etc.

I am also very competitive. So, all-in-all, I certainly was obsessive when it came to poker; it just so happened that gambling was my least favorite part of the game.

You are an addict when you want to stop using/doing something - YOU want to stop, not quitting for the wife, kids, job etc - and you can't.

This seems kind of specious. I mean aren't there a lot of massive degens out there that are clearly destroying their lives (to an outside observer) but have no desire on any level to change their actions?

If you have college kids take the basic AA "Am I an alcoholic" quiz, I would guess > 50% would qualify for yes. Most of them will leave college and settle into a 'normal' life with the 'normal' amount of drinking.

You and I may agree that drinking so often you lose your job and your wife leaves you makes you an addict, but the addict might say he's having the time of his life and didn't care about those things anyway. If he gets a new job and a hot girlfriend right away, is he no longer an addict?

What about someone who gambles beyond his means every day, but runs hot betting 6 team parlays and the net result is his kids can attend college with no loans? This guy looks like an awesome dude to the outside observer, but is probably an addict.

I have one friend who, back in the day, would buy a pack of smokes and come outside with us wherever we were partying. He inhaled and would finish most of the pack in a night, just like a nicotine addict would, 2-5 nights a week. The next day if we got together early I'd be smoking because I'm an addict, and he would not be because non-addicts generally don't smoke while you're hungover and feeling gross. It drove me crazy.

Bill Gates, to use the extreme, could probably pick up whatever habit he wanted and have no/minor issues because he can buy whatever he wants (including organs!), buy himself out of trouble, and is so rich the people he loves may never leave no matter how awful he gets. But he can still be an addict, if he wants to stop smoking meth and can't.

If you are looking for a standard that applies to everyone, I do not believe it exists - it's a personal qualification. Finding people who have negative consequences to their actions is a great place to start if you are looking for addicts, but everyone on list A won't be on list B, and you'll miss a lot.
