I'm going to argue that they are, in fact, regular stars for a very brief period of time. The first thing that hydrogen is going to do as it collapses is fusion. It's just the pressure from this fusion isn't going to be near enough to hold back the enormous gravitational collapse of the cloud for more than the tiniest fraction of a second. But during this brief window of opportunity, it's a star!
