    Default Android Apps

I've had my droid about a month now, have downloaded a ton of crap

    Some I've actually used productively:
    Listen - great podcast manager
My Tracks - GPS tracking for a run, trip, etc

    Free Games:
Replica Island - free game featuring Android
    Trap!

There is only one app you need: the google voice-to-text. Drinking with your friends will never be the same.

I also like the BBC news app. I wish they had one for Al-Jazeera.

oh, and calvin and hobbes and cyanide and happiness apps.

getting a droid next month so bring on the good suggestions. my brother in law had a pretty cool app that showed constellations wherever you point the phone in the sky. not that practical, but cool nonetheless.

Yeah, google sky. There is a ton of random stuff I've downloaded, was curious how much interest/feedback there was.

Bode, PM me like a week before you get it and I'll do a quick "beginners guide". I would say just bump this thread but I'll likely miss it.

Waze - I got it on my iphone, but it's cross platform afaik.
Free GPS Navigation with Turn by Turn - Waze

    I'm addicted.
It might be less fun in areas that they already have maps for. When I first used it I drove from upper austria to vianna, and vianna was almost all white with maybe a dozen roads scribbled on it. Now there are thousands.

The Moto Droid is amazing. Lightning fast, sick browser, great apps.

I can't comment on the other phone.

Definitely try them hands on before you buy. I haven't used the droid, but I have used other full touchscreen phones that randomly wouldn't react when you click something or it doesn't click exactly where you thought you did which can be very irritating when you browse pages with lots of links.

tbh I think the physical keyboards are just something to go wrong. It's not like you're going to write your memoirs on the thing.

    Can't comment personally, but
HTC Droid Incredible Review: More Like Impressive - Htc droid incredible review - Gizmodo

Basically get the incredible. It has 2x as much RAM, 2x faster processor, and I guess HTCs interface is better than the default (and Nexus one isn't coming to Verizon, if you can get that I believe it was supposed to be the winner)

This is the same kind of nonsense why they got away with selling 500mhz PIII's with 128mb ram in supermarkets in the late 90's and people would go "oh see, this has 500 of something while the one over there has 300 of the same, so obviously this must be better.
The only reason hardware companies even bother to tell you how much mhz their chips have is because people are still easily impressed with numbers. They might as well tell you fsb frequency or multiplicator. It's a useless number. Even more so if you compare it to another device which has a completely different OS.
All that matters is how well it works.

    Goggles never works for me

Flixter - clutch for finding movie times nearby
AroundMe - good for finding anything else
Handcent SMS - upgrade to messaging program
    AppBrain - upgrade to market
Google Sky Map - marginally practical, but very neat, clutch if you were trying to woo HS chicks
My Tracks - uses GPS to plot your running/biking/driving route

    Weather, haven't experimented enough here
    weather dot com I despise
accuweather dot com is very good, their app isn't bad, except for looking at hourly weather forcasts. It only shows 3 at a time which is annoying. Online the hourly forcast setup is money.
    RadarNow seems solid

    For geek "cool"

i don't know how i've texted without swype for this long. such a great app.

dialer one is a good upgrade to the stock phone app to check out.
agree that handscent sms is much better than the stock sms/mms.

has anyone rooted their droid yet? i've been kicking around the idea so i can run android 2.2 and overclock it, but not sure if i want to fuck around and possibly ruin my phone.

Places Diectory: find food, bar, bank, etc around you
Same idea as Around Me, but designed by Google so way better.

Features that I wanted, but couldn't figure out (thus I assume they don't exist) in Around Me

    1. Pick location on a map, so you can look for something in the upcoming city instead of just your current area
    2. Search within a category. So you can specify "Pizza" or something instead of browsing through all the subways and McDonalds just to find sit-down food

Haven't tried, but this site is good
The Start to Finish Guide to Rooting Your Android Phone

2.2 is tentatively scheduled for the droid by the end of July so unless you're feeling adventuresome, it might be worth waiting. Likely if you attempt the root this weekend they'll release the upgrade next week, if you don't it will be another 6 weeks.

I just got the droidx and the performance is pretty solid but I am curious if rooting it would make it even better. However, I heard that you can't root the x. Do you know if this is true? I'm hearing that 2.2 is going to be released closer to the end of August. But who knows.

i ended up rooting Wednesday night and am pissed i waited this long. As long as you read through the tutorial a few times and take your time doing it, it was a pretty fail-proof process. I installed android 2.2 with a pretty cool theme and overclocked to 1.2Ghz. This thing is 4-5 times as fast as stock. Apparently all droids act differently when accepting the overclock or whatever, and i got lucky that mine accepts one of the highest speeds.

Rooted my DX and downloaded the WiFi Tethering app. Pretty sweet. Next step is removing unwanted apps that came with the phone.

imo it's the difference between cake and pie. No one should care because we're all eating some delicious dessert.

Any who says the iphone isn't a great phone isn't being honest; anyone who says the droid phones can't compete is being equally dishonest.

Android 2.2 (aka Froyo, which I just found out is short for frozen yogurt) is to be released this week. Unofficial they will push 10k "updates" tonight at midnight, then 200k every day after that. They're basically handed out randomly.

Best parts about Android 2.2 Screenshots: Our Favorite Features in Froyo

Flash isn't in the market place yet, but should be tomorrow.

If you are impatient, and want it now, here are directions:
[How-To] Force the Official Android 2.2 Froyo Update for the Motrola Droid - Android Forums

I downloaded it to my computer, the update zip is 45MB so it will take a bit if you're downloading via 3G.

    Just finished, works fine.

Honesty I haven't used it yet. I only have 2 for the grocery, and the one I frequent most I can just type in my phone number.

    {EDIT: this app doesn't work with flatbed scanners (because of the screen, not the app specifically), aka what they have at the grocery, beat}

Track Your Running, Measure Your Fitness, and Improve Your Training | RunKeeper

Really using the GPS to the max here. It is also available for the iPhone. Use an armband to strap your phone (GPS at this point) to your arm. RunKeeper will track your run using the GPS. I like my tracks. I believe it was designed by google so is integrated with my maps

If you like puzzles I strongly recommend both these apps. If I was going to design an app both of these are very close to what I would have done. Both have free demo, and a pay version.
    Enjoy Sudoku
    Slitherlink

BTW, if you want to try a pay app, you can download and "pay", but if you uninstall within 24 hours you are not charged.

are you sure this is always the case? i thought it was on an app by app basis, and you had to email the developer for a refund withing 24 hrs?

Pretty sure it's google's policy. I paid for one app that seriously blew and uninstalled, it says you get a refund as you uninstall.

i dont play games on my phone much, but Angry Birds is fucking awesome. They put it up for free with ads until it hit 10 mill downloads or something, but i think thats over now. either way, there are over 150 levels and well worth a few bucks.

Cesto was the first (and is one of the only) multi-player games on the Android system. GOGOGOGOGO.

We played with it at the beach. It works really well with products but not so well with produce.

Gesture Search - search using swipe strokes (reminds me of palm interface) I use this to search contacts, easiest way I've found so far

Nerdy stuff (possibly repeats, one day I might organize a list):
    Astro - file browser
DiskUsage - shows which apps are taking up the most space visually
Battery Graph - tracks your battery power in garph form

swiggs, are you rooted? If so, download root explorer for your file manager needs. I think it may work if you aren't rooted also, you just wont be able to write to the root of the SD card, ldo.

I just tried out SkyDroid golf app this weekend and it is boss! The golf courses are mapped by community members so you have to play a pre-mapped course or map it yourself which only takes about 20 minutes the first time and probably 10mins if you stick to greens only. Graphics are good, think Google maps satellite images. Yardages are very good. You can map hazards, bunkers, trees, etc. The only think it doesn't do is keep score or find lost balls.
It will eat up your battery, if you leave the screen on all the time. I played a 5+ hour round on 50% batt. on my EVO by turning the screen off while not getting yardage. Totally worth the $1.99 I paid.
Playing live . . . thanks alot Bin Laden.

Floating Image is a very cool slideshow/picture viewing app. for looking at pics in your Gallery.

I also like all the soundboards. Specifically "The Hangover", "Tommy Boy" & "Friday".

No, mostly time related. Plus my headphone jack is kinda sketchy and I keep kidding myself that I'll go to the store and try to exchange it.

The only I really want from rooting is to overclock

its really worth it if you are going to have your phone for even a few months more only. It probably took eme about an hour tops, and i was a nit with reading and re-reading everything.

Prob is it's not just an hour. It's an hour to root, but then 2 hours of playing and another 1-2 hours of making sure everything works.

    ONE DAY!

I rooted my x and downloaded the superuser Milestone app which allows you to overclock. I don't really see the big deal. Maybe I didn't do things right, but I don't really see that big of a difference.

did you download a different kernal? You cant just overclock the stock kernal. Also, if SetCPU works on the X use that, its a better app for overclocking and you can set profiles to have your phone run slower when the screen is off or when its charging, etc.

Droid X 2.2 Overclock (Kernel Module w/Instructions) - Android Forums

The post at android forums lead me to believe that the app would clock the phone. From what I understand, if you want full control, you have to install the setscaling.sh script. Am I getting this right?
