    Default AMA with Matt Stout

MATT STOUT WILL RE-JOIN US AT 4PM ET ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH TO CONCLUDE HIS AMA!

We are extremely proud to have Matt Stout as our guest on September 30th at 7pm ET.

Matt Stout is an online and live pro currently riding a big wave of success on the live circuit. Having become a “who’s who” of online poker, he then took his talents to the international tours to enjoy equal success in the last few years.

Big titles have eluded him so far, but the final tables and big cashes that he keeps notching with regularity have made him a very recognizable and respected live pro.

Matt’s big-hearted nature has lead him on a pursuit to organize the Charity Poker Tour – something that we definitely hope he can share details about during the AMA that he has so kindly agreed to hold with us. Please notice that This date also coincides with Day 2 of WCOOP Main Event, which Matt plans on playing. If he happens to advance to Day 2, an alternate AMA date will be announced.
Please feel free to post your questions to Matt. This is an unique opportunity!

Be sure to check out Matt's blog and coaching services at: http://stoutpoker.com/

Visit Matt’s blog at stoutpoker.com – both for fascinating stories and to contact him for private lessons.

Do you see any game becoming more popular online than NLHE? What about live?

If you could put together a fantasy hockey team using past and/or present players, who would make the cut?

When you played hockey, what position did you play? Were you ever a goalie?

Are you really a Rangers fan? You're from Jersey. Shouldn't you be a Devils fan instead or at least in addition to being a NYR fan?

I think that PLO and OFC may eventually become more popular than NL, but I doubt it. Recreational players need a simple (two-card!) game to get them in the door. I think the PLO/OFC will continue to gain popularity along with mixed games.

Hmmmmm off the top of my head....Gretzky, Messier, Graves, Leetch, Ulf Samuelsson, Theo Fleury, Lemieux, Orr, Howe, Hasek, Richter, Selanne, Sakic, Patrick Roy, Jeff Beukeboom...I need more D....

I have the NYR shield tattooed on my right arm. I grew up in Bayonne which is right across the river from Manhattan and my Dad grew up in Jersey City which is in the same area. He grew up there before the Devils moved to NJ (they were the Colorado Rockies) so I grew up watching Rangers games with him when I was little and saw them win the cup when I was 9. I was HOOKED.

    Great opportunity. Thanks for organising.

What changes do you make to your game, if any, when you change from online to live?

Would you have pursued hockey as a career if you hadn't chosen to be a professional poker player instead? If so, would you have tried to play or would you have gone into coaching?

What aspects of training for/playing hockey have helped you as a poker player, if any?

This might sound stupid, but which is more physically grueling, the WSOP ME or playing a game of hockey?

I read somewhere that you became a poker player because there was a hiccup of sorts with your payment for a semester of college. Is that true? Did you ever get your degree? What did you study?

It's more like I got into poker because the hockey career wasn't going to work out. It started out with me being a really fat kid and not starting early enough in life to realistically expect to be a pro hockey player. If I did it I would be a player and eventually a coach. I still plan on coaching one day (my kids' teams!) and now I get to use poker as my competitive outlet.

The WSOP ME is more grueling because it's a week (when ur really lucky). I have to admit that, hour-for-hour, hockey is a little more grueling. haha I was really shocked when I started playing for a living how grueling live tournaments are and actually mocked what they said on ESPN about how exhausting it can be until I started doing it though. Thinking about every aspect of every hand all day long is a mentally draining task.

Yes, that's true. I turned 21 in the first of my 2 senior years, one for each major, Business Management and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I spent the whole break in AC and when I got back to school I found out that they were missing a signature on my student loan paperwork and were sending snail mail to my parents' house but never bothered to call my cell, so I was signed out of all of my classes. My semester off is now going on eight years.

Who is the best poker player you've ever played against? What's the most you've ever won in a live hand? What about online? What's the most you've lost live and online? What's the most you've ever put in the middle in a hand? Have you ever lost a prop bet? What did you have to do as a result...assuming you lost?

    Best: Seidel

Live hand: I don't play much cash but won a 40k pot in a 10/25/100 otb PLO game which was also prob the most I've ever put in the middle. I almost never play cash online and my biggest score online was $105k.

I don't make prop bets that I'm going to lose. Paul Wasicka def had to wear a pink shirt during day 1 of the WSOP ME a few years back that had a rainbow on it and said "hello my name is Matt Stout's Bitch" while he acted as my assistant after he didn't get as many WSOP POY points as I did in prelims.

    Hi Matt...cheers from Portugal

    - If you had to choose one...JUST ONE...what would it be...online or live tournaments?

    - Charity is more and more (thank God) a common word in poker...do you think other sports should follow this example? If you won the same salary, lets say, as Lionel Messi...what could you do or set up for charity?

    - With only 3 words...how would you describe yourself as a poker player?

    Thanks and best of luck

UGHHHHH My answer to this changes frequently. If it meant getting int'l Pokerstars back in the US, I guess live? So tough tho. I love both.

I would definitely start my own charity (probably related to food banks and/or children) if I had a boatload of money, but I think the biggest think to remember with charity is that nothing is too small. If you can only afford to give $10 to your favorite charity, do it. They could use it and will not say, "I can't believe that person only sent $10." If you can't afford to give money, plenty of charities just need your time.

3 words to describe me as a poker player: tight, loose, chameleon.

    Good luck to you, too!

That is a very kind answer from you regarding Charity. Do you have a favorite Charity organization you like to support? Do you contribute within the USA or do you use worldwide organizations that might take help - for instance- Africa ?

My fav charities to support are America's Second Harvest (nat'l food bank), the American Cancer Society, and Habitat for Humanity International along with the local Vegas food bank, ThreeSquare. I get a lot of satisfaction from volunteering but also sometimes feel like I'd be serving them better by playing poker that day and donating my profits, so I'm going to start having "charity days" of play soon.

Matt, as you progressed through poker ranks, how were you able to adjust to the rising level of competition? Did you have to redouble your study or did you already have enough to get where you are?

The biggest key is just to never get complacent no matter how much money you win or how high you're ranked. There will always someone who's better than you and/or is trying harder to get better, and even if you're #1 there's always someone on you're heels. Never stop talking through hands with friends whose game you respect, reading forums, reading books, and getting private coaching from sickos (like me! ).

How long is the long run in the context of winning and losing $?

The long run in tournaments is probably more live tournaments than a human could realistically play in years, which is why live tournament variance is so high and backers are often needed. I think online you would need at least 1000-2000 tournaments to really get a good sense of what a player is capable of.

    Matt,

In your honest opinion, how much poker is a game of luck and a game of skill? Good luck/skill in WCOOP, by the way - you tell me the right order!

    Thanks

I think the best way to put it is that on any given day, the game is 80% luck and 20% skill. In the long run it's 20% luck and 80% skill. It's like having a magic coin that lands on heads somewhere between 51-55% of the time. You can lose a lot of $ for a while, but if everything evens out in the long run it should all come back.

    - You're given $100 Billion. After all the trips and fun toys you buy, what do you spend your time doing?

    - Favorite movie of all time?

    - What is the best advice you're been given (or came to the conclusion to) that really helped take your poker game to the next level?

    Thanks for doing the AMA!

    Thanks for doing the AMA!
Investing and giving back to the world with charity endeavors/tournaments while I spend the rest of my time on beaches and at poker tables.

Shawshank Redemption for drama and The Big Lebowski for comedy. I want to be the Dude. But not broke. I don't want to write a $0.67 check for milk for my White Russians.

I think the most important piece of advice I ever got wasn't about poker specifically. It was an article I read in Bluff years ago (2005-06?) where a poker pro said that one of the most important things was to never play tables games and give you edge in poker back in the pits. I've stayed away from any serious gambling aside from poker and can't even begin to tell you how important that was now that I've seen multiple people win millions and give it all back to the house.

No problem, thanks for having me!

Hey hey hey Matt...great skills Congrats

    - In your opinion which are the TOP 3 websites to play poker nowadays?

    - The worst bad beat you had? What went through your mind afterwards?

    - What are your plans for the last 3 months of the year?

    - Do you live poker 24/7? When you have non-poker moments (if any) what do you prefer to do? any hobbies?

    1) Stars, Stars, and Stars.

    2) KQ<J9 vs Jaka on T93JJ for 2.6 million at 8/16k with 20 left near the money bubble of the WPT Bellagio $25k Championship that David Williams won for $1.4 million. All I could think about was doing my best to grind my 15BB into the money and back up to make the FT. I had no time to think about it or let it tilt me. After I busted ITM in 17th after losing a flip to Williams I was def left wondering if spending so much of my life chasing the dream of winning one of these big live events was worth it when you can turn the nuts for all the chips vs the other chip leader and lose. I've found a nice balance in between now where I make sure I make enough and still have my shots at the really big ones. The game is tougher than ever, you can't just expect to print all your $ at the highest stakes anymore.

    3) Bunch of time at home in Vegas with my fiancé while I play some live PLO and get back in shape by playing bball and hockey, some online sessions from Mexico, the WSOPC Harrah's in AC in early December, Christmas with her fam in FL, then a trip to CO to learn to ski/snowboard and visit friends through new year til I go to PCA.

    4) I def don't live poker 24/7 like I did when I first got into it and was COMPLETELY addicted. I play hockey and go to a lot of Rangers games. I'm actually going to their first 4 games of the season which are ALL on the road and ALL in different places. I love boating and jet skiing. I do a decent amount of shooting trap shooting (think Duck Hunt with real shotguns and no asshole dog to taunt you when you miss the target). I'm also a roller coaster fanatic.

Would you sit down in a high stakes NLHE cash game where 4 opponents were world class cash game pro's and one would be somewhat fishy?

What games besides NLHE do you consider your specialty?

How high were you in the OP picture?

What is the most memorable hand you played in your career so far (live or online)?

Would you feel comfortable playing a tough EPT final table or would you be intimidated if the table was mostly well - known pro's?

Depends on how fishy and I'd rather be playing PLO or at least a NL/PLO mix. Probably not because I like finding really good spots when I do play cash.

PLO only but I wouldn't even consider that a "specialty" til I get my game to a slightly higher level than I'm at. I play OFC too.

    Very.

I guess the hand where I shoved A7o into Martin Finger's QQ heads up for the bracelet this summer is my most memorable hand since I can't stop thinking about it until I get a bracelet.

I don't get intimidated by anyone anymore including players who I know are better than I am. You just make their edge even bigger on you if you're intimidated. Just play your best and try to learn everything you can from them along the way. I used to get frustrated by it but now realize how useful of a learning tool it can be to have a table full of sickos.

There are two things I don't discuss at the poker table: politics and religion. I'm going to extend that rule to the poker forums.

How does your training/coaching work? Do you train in-person, online or both? Are your sessions one-on-one or in groups? How much does it cost? Do you coach just for certain games or any type of poker that a person wants to get better at?

This is a pretty in-depth Q and we're actually discussing doing another AMA of just these Q's. There are a lot of ways. The most popular and effective include hand history reviews where I load both my and the student's hand histories into a replayer and discuss every aspect of every hand played throughout a tournament. I'm also working on an A-to-Z training manual that I'm going to use for long-term students and multi-day live poker seminars that I'll eventually be running. I do most of my coaching in NL tournaments but can also do NL cash and PLO tournaments/cash. As my PLO/OFC game gets better and better I'll start advertising PLO/OFC training.

Are you going to offer training sessions at different locations around the country? How many students will you have in each course? Few enough to provide some one-on-one tips?

lol I would participate in one but am not feeling creative enough at the moment to come up with one.

Thankfully, I've never caught an episode of it so I'm not sure. Probably not though, even my exes are pretty cool.

I hang out with Matt Salsberg, Steve Gross, Amanda Baker, Amanda Musumeci, Joe Cappuccio, and Matt Iles a lot. Every single one of my poker friends has said something that has influenced my game at some point so it's difficult to say. Mark Vos and Dustin Dirksen were HUGELY influential to me early in my career whether they realize it or not. I started chatting on AIM with both of them around 2005 when online poker first became popular and they were killing it. I'd occasionally ask about hands but it was mostly general poker advice from them that helped me a lot, and just talking to them motivated me to believe that it was something I could really do. So thank you to them.

Unfortunately, the people from FTR have just informed me that the server is now going to need to be rebooted because it keeps crashing from what they claim is all the people waiting to read my answers. lol Thank you guys, and sorry! They want to put the rest of the AMA on hold until later this week, but I'll be back and will do my best to finish answering everything posted.

How often do you visit NJ? What do you miss the most about living there?

What place would you like to visit that you haven't been to before?

If you could go backward or forward in time, what year and location would you visit? Why?

I go to NJ at least 2x a year to visit family, play Borgata events, go to Rangers/Giants/Yankees games, and go to Great Adventure. I miss being close to my family the most but I still make sure to see them plenty. Aside from that the proximity to NY is the thing I miss the most especially since my sports teams are there.

I want to go to Bora Bora and will probably be going there for my honeymoon. Such a quiet little spot and SO far from civilization. The moon would be cool as well but is slightly out of my price range.

I would probably have to go back in time to the 60's and 70's since I'm a hippie at heart who just missed the boat. Not even sure where the best place to be a hippie was back then, but I imagine it was somewhere in the mountains, so that's where I'd go. I'd also be very interested in going forward about 100-200 years and checking out NYC (if it's still there, sigh).

Is it ever advisable to fold pocket aces pre-flop in a tournament other than to avoid moving up a spot in the money? Is your answer the same for both online and live tournaments?

These answers are the same both online and live...

There are theoreticals like if everyone at your first table in the WSOP ME goes all in on the first hand and you have AA in the BB, you should fold because your ROI is so high that you shouldn't put yourself in a spot where you'll bust on the first hand the vast majority of the time even with AA. However, these ridiculous hypotheticals never happen and most people who fold AA pre in an MTT are making a huge mistake, like people who do it to avoid $ bubbling. There are other theoretical spots where you should fold AA in MTT's because of ICM reasons at a final table, but again, it's something that would rarely actually happen.

It is often correct to fold AA pre in satellite tournaments when you have enough chips to lock up a seat, however.

Highs: Traveling to tons of awesome locations and meeting some of the coolest people I could ever possibly meet. Winning tons of money and making WPT and WSOP final tables. Being homeless at times (no house/apt to worry about or rent to pay).

Lows: Dealing with nearly quarter million dollar downswings both financially and psychologically while trying to continue to play my best game. Not making WPT and WSOP final tables (in most events I play). Being homeless at times (stuff in storage, no sense of home).

How did you learn to play poker?

How did you first get into poker?

Who is your favorite player to watch today (male and female)?

When did you realize that people could actually make some money with this game?

When did you realize you could make a good living in poker?

What’s the biggest prop bet you’ve ever made and did you win it?

What games still offer good players the biggest edge in bigger live tournaments like the WSOP?

When stars talk about the "biggest" games, to what limits are they generally referring in your opinion?

Other than "play, play, play", what advice would you give someone hoping to become a great player? Any recommended reading?

Who would make your Hall of Fame table?

WOW that is an outrageous # of questions to ask. Seems like the one you want answered most is in bold, so here you go.

    1) Doyle Brunson
    2) Chip Reese
    3) Eric Seidel
    4) Tom Dwan
    5) Steve "gboro780" Gross
    6) J.C. Tran
    7) Carlos Mortenson
    8) Stu Unger
    9) Shaun Deeb

I played a long session of 25-50 (cent) limit hold'em w college buddies and won $4.25. I'd never been so excited to win so little money, and with such a slave wage hourly rate to boot...but I was VERY excited about it at the time and immediately hooked.

I LOVE NL MTT's (the capitalization of "love" seems less powerful since the rest of the sentence had to be capitalized, but anyway) but am also starting to fall in love w PLO, especially PLO MTT's. So I think it goes 1) PLO MTT's 2) NL MTT's 3) PLO cash 4) OFC 5) Mixed games

Nope, but I do offer hourly one-on-one coaching for $150/hr and am working on a multi-day seminar/training camp.

Create my own obv. Would take over Batman for the sick whip and cool toys and because I'd have the sickest roller coasters at Six Flags. If I could have my own super power I'd be the "Karmic Corrector." I'd find the people who have let money turn them into gigantic douchebags, strip them of everything, and leave them penniless in the street while giving their money and belongings to good people and families in need.

I've done a lot of work with Habitat for Humanity for a long time and was the VP of Habitat for my college. I even ran a (probably illegal) charity poker tournament to raise funds for them at my college. I've also started volunteering at Threesquare food bank in Vegas and will be doing some work with Habitat Vegas soon. I love Habitat because they provide incredibly low-cost housing to people in need and I've always like supporting food banks because it's important to help our fellow man fulfill this most basic need without having to beg regardless of what their financial situation is.

The Charity Poker Tour is a bunch of ideas that I've had for a long time to have a series of charity events that are built into series' on the tour to make it convenient for pros to show up and support various charities while bringing amateurs out to support the causes and play with the pros. As much as I love the WSOP, dealing with Caesars means TONS of red tape as I found out years ago, and now that they have One Drop I'm drawing dead on that front. I partnered with a group of people and created/submitted a proposal to the WPT when they were trying to figure out how to move forward with their planned charity initiative. Unfortunately they decided to go in a different direction with it. Hopefully I can make something happen with it in the near future.

How do you handle it when someone does something annoying like check-raising you at every opportunity during a game?

Are there certain behaviors, like someone clicking or chewing gum with his/her mouth open, that bother you more than others when you play?

Have you ever "lost it" during a game? If so, under what circumstances?

Has anyone ever "lost it" over something you did either deliberately or inadvertently during a poker game? If so, what were the circumstances that led up to that moment? What did you do once the person calmed down?

    1) The key is to not get frustrated and instead enjoy the challenge while trying to find the best way to counter their strategy. In this case, a combination of not betting with crap in the first place and betting with the intention of 3betting as a bluff more sounds about right.

    2) I jokingly say that some people's faces tilt me and people who sit there and stare a lot especially with their mouth open are kind of annoying but I rarely ever really let anything get to me when I play, especially something that minor.

    3) I used to let other people get to me and would occasionally get into it with people who act like dicks at the table or say something stupid to me but have slowly phased that out.

    4) I called Sorel Mizzi a cheater at the table and he lost his mind and challenged me to a fight in the parking lot. He didn't debate the validity of my claim, though...

Matt, could you tell us about any success stories of your students?

Sure. I taught Amanda Musumeci how to play tournaments in 2007. Since then she has done well online, been sponsored by Bodog, and had this impressive list of cashes (http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=194849) including a 62nd place finish in the WSOP main event for $130k and 2nd in a $1500 WSOP event for almost half a mil.

I started teaching Mike Frazin, a retired businessman, how to play tournaments in early 2010. Since then he has had a bunch of scores (http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=147406) including 2nd place in a huge Stars $109+rebuys for over $50k and winning a WPT regional $2k for $130k+. I think his DB list is missing a Bellagio $1k+rebuys win for $50k+ as well.

I also taught two of my best friends from NJ, Joe Cappuccio (Joey Capp/Cappuccio816) and Matt Iles (papamat25/I Pay Ur Rent), how to play and both have been very successful online players since. Both cracked the top 50 in Pocketfives rankings before Black Friday with tons of online scores including three outright victories in the Tilt $1k and one in Sunday $500.
