Default 2014 FIFA World Cup Pool

Remember all the funs we had back in 2010?

Let's do it again. This could be the official 2014 FIFA World Cup discussion thread, too.

As it happens I like our squad, I think we have a decent chance of making an impact in 2018, because we have a young squad who will gain valuable experience this year in Brazil. But we're nowhere near good enough yet to compete with Germany, Spain and Argentina. We'd need to get very lucky to even make the semis.

Belgium have a better chance than England do, but I'm not expecting them to win either. My money is on a South American nation, probably Argentina.

So how hated is Jurgen Klinsmann is USA after he dropped Landon?

I'm not sure USA have any players left I've heard of.

Oh right you have Brad Guzan, Tim Howard and DaMarcus Beasley. I've heard of three, and two of them play in the EPL.

I'm probably not gonna bother with this actually. I'm boycotting the WC because FIFA are a bunch of cunts. It just doesn't seem right that the world will be cheering on their heroes for kicking a ball about in a shiny new stadium while people are struggling to feed and protect their children on the outskirts of the same cities the football is being played at. There's a lot wrong with the way the world works, and the WC has unfortunately been hijacked by a corrupt organisation whose only concern is profit.

    Fuck FIFA, I'm not watching.

I've also given up smoking tobacco because fuck the tobacco companies, and fuck the government. This year is fun already.

We need a trusted escrow and somebody to pick the teams randomly (this person obviously can't be participating in the pool). Any volunteers?

I want a team. Has to stand up for the principles of libery and freedom on the world stage. Has to be a paragon of open dialect and a warrior for a better world.

    Any suggestions?

I think that Argentina will be the winner.
However, it will be very good matches for betting

Couple of reasonable looking bets available in this week's friendlies imo:

Brazil @1.25 to beat Serbia at home
Germany @1.1 to beat Armenia at home

Hi, if there's still room for one more I'll definitely play.

    Both positive expectations bets imo.

I would have expected Germany to be 1.03 or 1.04 for that game, as evidenced by the 6-1 win. Similar for Brazil, but a much tighter affair - I'd normally expect ~1.15 for that game.

Yeah but every now and then, the weaker team sneaks a draw in a friendly because the superior team are complacent or experimenting. Who'd have though crappy England could have sneaked a draw against the mighty Ecuador?

Never back England, especially if you're in England. They've never been good value if you're taking a punt in the UK as Joe Moron Public lumps on because "yeah, we're Engerlund, we'll fuck 'em all up because we used to rule the world with our navy".

Aussie vs Dutchies, an entertaining match with just about everything in it, from terrible refereeing (horrible decision to award Holland a penalty), the awesome Cahill goal, keeper error that resulted in Holland's winning goal, and all in all Australia showing terrific resilience and spirit.

The sadistic fun in watching Chile finish off Spain was also a highlight. Adios Espana. Chileans were taking the piss though, flopping around quite a lot to win time, so the 6 minutes added time at the end was justified. Refs were questionable here too IMO.

This world cup will be staying in the South America. Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, chile all are playing very competetive football this world cup. Only Nethearland and Germany are showing champion like game from europe.

I believe the top euro teams will run circles around the south-american ones. We will see. When Muller scored the third goal for Germany, they didn't even celebrate. That's a very particular kind of response in an event as big as the World Cup, almost as if they know these are just chores to be done before the finals.

That was so fucking depressing. I mean for a few minutes at 1 all I had some hope but that's it. If you think about it, at no point so far in the world cup have England actually been beating anyone.

I think this WC should be really great for soccer support in the US. This has been an incredibly exciting WC in general, which could win over anyone who happened to watch games that don't have murrica in them (I'm especially thinking teenagers who have nothing better to do with their summer vacation than to see what this soccer business is all about; it's much harder to come away thinking it's boring this year than those who've watched in years' past). US themselves has been involved in a couple of good games; they've had about as many lead changes in the first two games than they'd scored goals in the last two WCs combined (I'm exaggerating ... I think). US got to get a "revenge win" against a very random rival in Ghana, who'd eliminated them from consecutive WCs.

Even if the US don't advance, I think it's much better (from a viewership standpoint) for them to play competitively in a great group than it is to play meh in meh groups. For anyone who's watching matches that directly affect the US, they get to watch an awesome German team and American fans have no choice but to be wowed by the Ronaldo cross on the last possession of the game. It's a helluva lot better than having the pride of the group be the LOLEngland team of 2010, and even the World Champ Italy team of '06 which came out of our group was boring as hell as far as Americans are concerned. They shutout every team on their way to the Finals (except for an own goal) and then won the Final on the dreaded (again, from the American perspective) penalty shootout.

I realize I'm leaving out 2002, which didn't exactly catapult the US into soccer-mania, but that was 12 years ago (which is like half of US soccer's modern history), and I think that was another case of surviving meh teams (Mexico being meh from American spectator perspective).
  73. #73
What do you think about Italy vs Uruguay?

Like I read Italy will play with new formation 3-5-2.
