Obviously stats/reads are important, but anyways here's my thoughts:

-3betting or calling pre is fine, I probably lean towards a 3bet to end the hand right away instead of playing a hand OOP without initiative HU.

-I'd donk or c/r the flop, but c/c doesn't seem terrible, I just think you have to use your fold equity here, but I understand you c/r the turn to do the same thing. I really like donkbetting for 2-2.50 and probably stacking if he's willing.

-Turn as played c/r is good, but I'd feel better if it was an overcard or like a 2, 5, or 7 so we get a few more outs.

-River, I don't think you need to bet nearly this large since if he's folding, he'll fold to a smaller bet, unless you have reads that he'll fold 2nd/3rd pair to big bets on the river or something. I'd like to hear your thought process for this bet tbh.

-> dranger, nice analysis on the A3s hand. River sizing was cos this reg is never going to be expecting a bluff of this size here. Or, that was my rationale at the time. On further thought, this reg has also seen me fake-block often enough that a small (35% pot) bet is likely to be as effective.

a while back i asked spoon

that, plus Oskar telling me to sort my shit out, plus thinking a lot about tilt, session duration, playing solidly, variance, and a bunch of other stuff has resulted in, among other things, a nice little spreadsheet. The main purpose of this spreadsheet is to force a pre-session routine and make myself check boxes regarding whether i have the things i want to hand (e.g. water) and a quick description of my state re whether i should be playing poker. This second task has resulted in me not playing several sessions that i would otherwise likely have played, and these sessions tend to cost me quite a bit of money. The spreadsheet is also a nice record of results, that is nice too.
Summary since 21:00 on april 20th est is linked below if you're interested - the session with no time attached is where i decided to play micro-stakes plo cos i didn't feel in a good state to be playing poker but felt like hanging out in that buzz = a spot where i normally would lose money playing normal stakes.. anyway, that isn't work so i don't include the time spent

some discussion in irc about my play with suited connectors and gappers - below are my stats over the last 19k hands of 50nl/pl full ring filtered on SCs and suited one-gappers {24s-QTs, 23s-TJs} and excluding hands with 5 or fewer players
    overplay them much?!?!?

lol holy shit at the suited connectors/1 gappers. Sounds like you are getting more serious, which is huge for your success because you know that you can beat these stakes far better than you are, you are just a bit of a headcase

rush plo is fun for when i'm not in grind-shape. I just beat someone's quads on 99JK2tt. I'd post a screenshot, but seems that i am unable to post images now.

    here's the link anyway:

wow i didnt know the concept of rush poker applied itself to PLO as well. that would be intense!

Ha! Even worse is that you could have beaten quads using two different set of cards, not just one.

<daven> some hands to show just how dead the games aren't right now
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | AA - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | 33 - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | 4As - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | A5s - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | KK - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | AQo - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem
    <daven> weaktight | Hand | AA - $0.25/$0.50 No Limit Holdem

rush omaha is proving fun - profitable too. Fully psyched on getting stacks in cos i'm rarely worse than 40% dog and fold equity is rampant!

oh dear. Middle set no good 3x in a session for >100bb a time. Ran into top set each time in situations where their range was far wider...
cashed in the ironman freeroll. Then my KTs < bb's 46o allin pre for what would have been a decent stacksize heading into mid-late stages of the tournament. Oh well, happens.

and then i started calling too much. And, ya know, stuff like this is why i play poker, right?

seems to be working out for me just fine.
11k hands at 7ptBB/100, and another 1.25ptBB/100 in rakeback. Long may this continue. Fuck mass-multi-tabling

tldr - cliff notes = just don't tilt. No playing when drunk/hyper-caffeinated/tired etc

so, i thought i'd been running pretty bad outside of AIEV spots this month. A quick scan through HEM is quieting my moaning on that front.

i thought set over set was killing me. Turns out I'm only net -3buyins on flopped underset situations (i.e. counting the times i coolered someone else vs times they coolered me), although mine have mostly been middle set which makes folding them a lot harder...
I thought two card flush < two card flush was killing me. Turns out it's only net -4 buyins, and 2.2 of those were from one crazy 3b pot where there was irc consensus that my flush was huge against villain's range of nut flushes/sets/overpairs/two pair/random/lower flushes.

two things are killing my month.
1 = a tilt session at the beginning and another monster session i shouldn't have played about a week ago. (maybe 15 buyins? difficult to quantify, but... i can see the session tab, i know when i was playing on uber-tilt, etc)
2 = runbad in AIEV spots. (13 buyins)

Tilt is something i can control.
Runbad is something that long term averages out, so whatever.

    So: May so far

i'm up about $750 in rakeback and another $75 in cashing an ironman tourney. I cleared $400 of an ironman bonus (maybe it's time to buy another). I'm $50 up on loloplo, and net 5 buyins up at the 50nl tables.

So, May is about 1/2 way through. A week ago I started playing less tables (mostly) and putting way more focus into my game. I'm feeling good about my game. I'm net up around $1525 even with huge tilt and reasonably solid runbad. What does this mean? it means that the outlook for the rest of the month is good. The runbad will average out, i just need to make sure i don't allow tilt to eat the results.

edit coupla days later: clearing another bonus, running neutral, grinding. +$2.2k in May to date.

and a hand history cos celebrating fish is way cooler than moaning

standard hero call vs my image ?

    what means 'freerolling'?
loloplo i am a losing player and 11 buyins behind on AIEV, 5 in one session. Yet somehow i'm still loving it, maybe cos of the low stakes? Maybe cos of how much learning there it to do? Maybe it's cos i can see how much exponentially better i can easily become. Who knows really.

oh, and what gives with all the supernovas at 25 plo?!?

still probably a little too loose, like 17% vpip is probably too high for someone who isn't very good postflop.

running uber-bad since i moved up to 100nl. 6bi behind expected in money in the middle spots, and many set under sets...
    debating moving back down.
some moan hands, i won't bother posting the sets, just a few beats..

a promising month ended up kinda meh from a dollar perspective (net just over $4k in profit - edit post-month-end tally), but i'm pretty stoked with where i've come during may 2010.

    summary:
    1) continued clearing some ironman bonuses - $1k worth
    2) experimented with dropping tables - it works
    3) solid 50nl session (50k hands) with a decent winrate after the dropping tables and i am confident that i'm a solid winner at that stake. I also note that there are only one or two regs at that stake who i feel continue to give me any trouble. If i ever need a confidence or bankroll boost i'll go 10-table da fiddies
    4) i'm way better at controlling tilt, taking a break, breathing exercises, that has been important.
    5) the aiev pwnage continued - slansky owes me $1.2k this month! but i gained a lot in tilt control - eventually - out of this. And if you crush the games then you should still be breakeven or better, even when your soul is being destroyed
    6) i read almost all the concept of the week posts on 2+2 micro fr - some diamonds among the shit
    7) i gained a lot of confidence in my game
    8) rakeback...
    9) table winnings unacceptably low, but still four figures
    10) played some tournies. I still suck. But i've figured out that i simply needed to be more aggressive and i end up in better spots stack-wise now

i'm playing ok. Mixing 50nl and 100nl sessions, depending on how i feel. Looking forward to a huge run of positive variance. If i run AA overpair into 9999 in a 3bet pot one more time... 6bi behind expected for the month so far. Breakeven after rakeback accrued.

The runbad is forcing me to look at my game, if i had been in tip top folding form in some spots i'd still be a few buyins up for the month. So.. i must aim for that a-game consistency to be at the forefront of every poker decision i make. I feel close to the holy grail of a-game, and i'll be trading it for gold when i get there.

Planning a two month climbing trip in southeast asia and australia for october-november. Trip planning is fun!

getting there. Month is going ok after a horror start. Haven't played much, didn't really feel like it so i've been doing other stuff, back on now tho and i'll hit the 20hr mark for the month sometime soon. Properly in the black at the tables, and obviously some rake in there somewhere.

I'm on 1 million ftp points now, which is kinda funny. Wish i could use them to buy bonuses. I could buy $6k-ish in tourney entries.. or just get a few macbook pros. Decisions.

a friend of mine has just moved to brunei and has a bunch of free time = more madness in the mix for this trip i'm planning...

daven, I'd really suggest you spend it all on FTP clothing :P Or do some research and find out which product sells the best/highest and buy it and convert it to actual money.

    ima gonna be well dressed

so, a while ago i started playing 50nl smarter. Next 100k hands and i'm aiming for less tilt and 4+ptBB/100

i like that i attribute downswings to tilt, and upswings to being a poker deity

  25. #100
Your winrate is much higher immediately following the downswings. Mentality shift or upswing?
FTP -> .00135 per ftp deducted from net rakeback
    Free membership to cardrunners?
    GL with the next 100k

ok, first up and Dranger told me to sort my shit out and get back to ABC.

Thing is, i understand a few of the basics to an ok level. Enough to beat these stakes, surely?! so all i have to do is sort it out...

then, here are the keys before i got it sorted, like, not answers in themselves, but good steps along the way i think:

In both cases there is a dwindling focus. Like just now, 2x KK<AA, 2x flopped flush no good - but so what, i should simply review the hands at session end and see what i can learn from them. Until the session end the hands' only relevance should be the player notes i get out of them.

Focus is also heavily related to session duration and number of sessions. I know that i can't play 12 hrs in a day without losing focus, nor sessions longer than 2 1/2 hrs. So why do i do it?
    some wells worth reading:
atc well - the main gold is his comment #4 re rivers of molten gold

gomukyaself - he recommends reading nutsinho on FTR
    http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/11...yaself-693792/

    AND THEN
    the most important bits.
    1) I did some HEM analysis - note the suited connectors post where i clicked that i'm heavily overplaying them
    2) I read all the CoTW posts at 2+2 micro FR
    3) I started thinking way harder about hands in the forums, not always posting, but considering the options rather than simply a one off answer - like, if i had an instant answer i wanted to go through the alternatives etc, figure out why

    AND THEN, more gold:

a while back i asked spoon

basically thinking about what focusing on poker really meant.

and then i started playing less tables for quite a few sessions from sometime in May. Applying things, working on specific leaks. Not playing sessions too long.
and, most importantly, calling less. Finding the fold button sometimes. Raising/betting more.

I've been discussing hands in irc more often too.

    hope that helps some

Thanks Man, I didn't expect so much info. Much appreciated.

You posted this nugget in my Op and it helped a lot:
"Regarding psychological impact of folding and then seeing a flush board - if you can't deal with this then poker isn't your game. Once a hand is mucked you should try and forget the cards you held, it's no longer important."

Of course, it's just basic poker mindset, but sometimes it helps to get smacked in the head with the basics!

games are soooo good. High variance styling can be intense. 8 biggest pots i was in during my last session follow - just cos big pots are fun to post. I won't bother with reads etc, i'm ok with how i played most of these, AQ hand i won was dubious, except villain's range confused me, KK maybe a bit meh too (the first). I'm absolutely happy with bet-sizing line on the AA>JJ hand, image helped a lot here...

all part of one day, 5k hands, breakeven after rakeback accrued, 5bi behind on aiev, crushed on flopped sets vs turned sets all in on turns. Month is going just fine, hell, i'm approaching the grail of not losing money even when i'm running terri-bad - and arrival there is surely an indication i'm finally playing ok

another day, another dollar. Something like that anyway.
meh at barely a few buyins up at the tables in june, rakeback doing it's thing isn't exactly super-styling...
When i'm playing well, i'm on. So, play well more frequently please.
    kthx.

good life news, went to the dentist for the first time in a few years, no work required, my teeth are fine. Also been looking at workshop/office combo spaces, and then got talking to the manager of a crazy building and it looks likely i'll be moving into a studio thing that i fell in love with at a party a few months ago. Things are pretty good. Now it's time for poker to tow the line...

i came 2nd in the feesh HU tourney. Was wtf-pwnt by surviva, but i think i gained from the experience.
June is approaching $1.5k in profit net of rakeback which is kinda whatever. A week to go and maybe i'll get some grind in, not sure. Been a pretty low volume month by my standards, i may hit 60k hands. Or not. Lucky my life expenses are low.

hit 60k hands. Up a little over $2k in June net of rakeback.

so, when a reg types something like this in chat what is my best avenue for complaint? GeexxPee is whale, klanxxker has a big hand, we're all pretty (130-220bb) deep and i cover. Thoughts on whether shrxxomi being an arsehole here is acceptable? he justified it by moaning about me laughing after stacking him earlier...

    *** FLOP *** [8c Qd 6s]

    SHRxxOMI checks

hero has 15 seconds left to act
    hero raises to $60

Not in love with your flop raise because you don't need to protect and you can set up a river shove without raising the flop... but he is clearly out of line. I would just mail support with the chat and the hand number. Not much else you can do.

there's a difference between tilting someone in the chat and deliberately influencing the play of a hand like he did. i guess all you can do is report to support though.

re the hand, yep, agreed that the flop raise wasn't great...
re the chat, i wrote to FTP support. Their first response made zero sense, seems as though they were responding to some other e-mail. Typically they get it right second or third go.

ima gonna copy m2m and post a session summary from a session just finished. The type of session i'm not supposed to be indulging in any more.

    duration - 4hrs
    mtt ratio - 15
    hands/hr - 965
    -----------
was as swingy as that type of session is wont to be (started out -3, then + 2, then -2, then +2, etc), and i played like balls a lot of the time. Finished up 2bi, accrued some rakeback, and hit ironman for the month to be getting a $575 mid year ironman bonus in july.

u make $2K in rb? Surely you can get that wr up and like triple ur monthly >.> or play 1/2 as many tbls and not BE and get the same hourly with fewer hands played? I dunno...

misunderstanding i think - i use 'net of' to mean 'including'
i'm up about $1400 at the tables this month at 50nl/pl, take out the ridiculous spew at 6-max and i'm even running at an almost acceptable winrate on the FR tables this month. Even including that spew i'm around 2ptBB/100. I'm playing significantly fewer tables in about 1/2 of my sessions, and less than i used to in about 3/4 of them - your advice is good, and i'm on it!

Just to follow-up, how much did you make in rakeback in June roughly? Was it $2k or $2k minus $1400 for $600? I just recently switched to Tilt from Stars and I think my monthly rakeback is somewhere in the $400 to $600 range @ 100NL. If you were making $2k from rakeback @ 50NL, I think that could actually be a concern unless your winrate was decent.

below copied from junefailgraphaments thread. My rakeback vs table winnings have been an area of concern for a while, i've addressed this markedly during the last few months and anticipate that things are only going to get better

    -----------------------

a month at da fiddy, shouldn't have played any 6-max.

    +$100 BC HU
    +$720 rakeback

net $2.4k and lucky i live kinda cheap at the moment....

i took four days off poker and watched a whole bunch of films and cool mountaineering story-telling slide shows at a mountain film festival.
Now i'm back. I'm feeling very good about poker. Time to back it up with results.
i want my graph for July to continue in the flavour of my experience since mid-june. Nothing stopping me from doing it except myself..

so, i've played really low volume so far this month (by my standards anyway).
I'm about breakeven at the tables over 15k hands at 50nl, some rakeback and bonus etc, but meh.
i've lost a coupla hundred donking around at 25plo.
I've studied a whole bunch lately and feeling very good about FR NLHE.
I'm 3-betting and 4-betting a little more. Seems to be getting me into trouble.
some of the big pots from my latest session, all pretty much vs decent enough players.

I would make the 4b tad bigger in the AK hand - you really want as much FE as you can get, and you can jam any flop if you make it 20. Make a note on the sizing and fistpump 4b ATC when he makes it 5 oop next time.

dont mind the flat with JJ vs TT. when the original raiser folds, baseball will fold all the time. This would be a super awesome squeeze spot with a wide range... especially with your image.

i just played a big 50nl session and played well almost the entire session. Ended up ip vs a 90-40 whale running like god, unfortunately he left the table once he hit 1500bb. This wasn't even a deep table... anyway, i ran behind 5bi on da aiev all in that one session, to finish at -$77 at the table and down < 1 buyin if you take into the session rakeback accrued. If i can run that fucking awful and still breakeven then things must be doing ok.

I'm writing an article after a discussion with JKDS, it would be finished, but i keep on unlocking new poker dimensions that i may have half considered in the past but and suddenly really gaining insights into.

my favourite hands vs the whale, note that one of them wasn't even a badbeat, so doesn't even contribute to the aiev disaster...

FTP have gone and changed the rules for me to withdraw, i can't go straight to my credit card now, nor use bank wire transfers. For the moment i'm using neteller to move money to another site and getting it out from there, but it's not ideal...

Anyway, i've played 6k hands over the last couple of days. Games are good. I can't win a flip to save myself, hell, i'd be happy to win an 80-20. Behind about 5BB/100 on the old all-in luck, being ahead over this sort of stretch makes me feel really good about the games, and about my game.

for lols, yes, i scrubbed a couple of stats. regs know.

it may only apply to new credit cards? the card i originally had linked to FTP hit its expiry date and i can't use the new one to deposit. I was able to withdraw to the old one up until it expired - so you may be ok.

By the looks of things I won't be doing a withdrawal anytime soon anyhow.
Your EV looks awfully similar to mine.

i just finished a longish session where i played terribly. Such a waste to play good tables for a few hours and finish up only one buyin, yuck.
this pretty much sums it up:

    TheHammer8: fukin bs
    davenigma: i play bad
    TheHammer8: bo sh it
    TheHammer8: no
    davenigma: bo?
    davenigma: bo sh it?
    davenigma: i don't get it
TheHammer8: playin 3-5 must have something to do with your iq
davenigma: when i grow up, i want to be a fireman
    davenigma: like my uncle steve
System: A $50+$5 Satellite to FTOPS Event #13 will be starting in 2 minutes. At least 3 seats will be awarded!
davenigma: he said they get good head for being heroes, but he won't tell me what that means until i'm older
davenigma: he said my mum wouldn't approve
davenigma: so i googled 'firemen getting good head'
davenigma: i hadn't realised that uncle steve;s girlfriend was a movie star
    TheHammer8: or a spelling teacher
    davenigma: ispell bad
davenigma: what word did i spell incorrectly?
    TheHammer8: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
    davenigma: it's hammertime!

Ok, I'll tell you something if you don't tell it anyone else.
You do not... you DO NOT want to call my 4-bets oop. Almost as bad as me calling your mp opens with AQo from the blinds.

july was silly, and i shouldn't play bad cos it isn't profitable. Last 3 sessions i ran 22 vpip which just isn't going to make me money in full ring holdem. Volume was low by my standards again, but that's fine.

Add the $575 midyear ironman, about $700 rakeback, and, meh, whatever.

Cool month outside of poker. I moved into an amazing studio/apartment/warehouse place that i fell in love with at a party. Haven't got internet hooked up there yet cos of dumbarses - but seems that this is resulting in getting the first couple of months free and no connection fee so it's ok.
I'm about to take another week off poker, then get some grind on for a while to set me up for a month of holiday in October. Bought tickets for thailand and malaysia yesterday and am well-psyched on the trip.

cool week away in and around the city that has been home most of my adult life! Weather was pants so didn't end up heading on a climbing trip. Did play with a rifle and fill a fridge in the process though. Also got to hang out with my godson (he's a rad 18 month-old!), caught up with heaps of friends, drank truckloads of beer, etc.

Had a crazy scare last night.. Late last week I caught up with a good rock-climbing friend of mine who has been doing an alpine climbing instruction course the last couple of months and was excited about the next weekend on the mountain. Arrived back into cyber-access-land on Sunday evening after a few days out and there was a news report of a guy who had died in a fall on that same trip, same age, same instructor, name not yet released. Decided not to call him to find out whether he was alive that night (if he was, then all good, if not, then i'm not sure that whoever had his phone would feel like answering...) but had a shitty night sleep trying to convince myself it might not be him, interspersed with going through loads of memories of the last 16-ish years i've known him. Checked the news this am, he wasn't dead but he'd been on the scene. I was ecstatic that he's still alive, but felt kinda guilty in my happiness at the same time. Someone is still dead out of this. And then started thinking about how many tens of times i've read news reports around the world and hoped it's nobody i know. And realising that the times it's been someone close, i've found out from friends way before i read anything on the news. And remembering one time where i was confident a friend from ages earlier (exchange student when i was at university) was dead but decided not to ever confirm. And how amazing it was to run into her at a base-camp in Patagonia 5 years later - this ghost who wasn't and really was! Fuck mountains and their crazy dice.

In other news, i'm probably gonna head into the mountains for a winter solo transalpine trip for a week sometime mid-august - haven't done anything serious and solo since ages, argentina in cordon del plata 2007 i think must have been the last time. I need to get inside the outside the inside the outside the something of my head again..... crow face of Mt Rolleston looks kinda neat, and it's been on my list forever - http://www.jonathancarr.com/gallery/...rolleston.html

what else? i'm well ensconced in my new abode, internet arrived while i was away so it's all pretty much sorted now - although my girlfriend notes that i still need to buy a pepper grinder pretty cool when that's all that a place is lacking. Oh, and maybe a flatmate. Or not. I haven't yet decided whether i'm gonna reside alone in my patrick bateman-esque abode. I'll probably have a house-warming in the next month sometime, after i've put away the meat-hooks.

and poker, cos this is a poker forum. I haven't played poker yet in august, but that's gonna start shortly - ima gonna mimic oskar and chuck in a relevant track

    grind to come.

Read most the year, Daven. Glad to hear life's good and not-so-good-in-places but mostly good.

I'm amazed that for nearly a year I've been indifferent to playing poker, but now I have the bug again. I dunno how much I'll be on FTR, yet, but I will definitely be back at the tables nightly for the first time in many, many months.

I like how serious you sound at beginning of 2010 with goals and methods and plans and sh*t!

I've played like 600 hands in my last 7 hours of poker. But I've enjoyed each hand. I don't have any plans or goals right now except to get rolled on Tilt for 10nl and see what interests develop, especially with MTT's and multi-table SNG's, which is an area I've not spent much time with ever.

    Good luck!!

good to see you back Robb! i read back through my serious biz start of the year stuff, and it's time to sort my shit out again.
For the moment tho, i'll celebrate a couple of little things
    1) I didn't play first 12 days of August, then downswung when i did. Anyway, here's to being back in the black for the month
    2) sorted out withdrawing $$ from FPT again, was starting to get a little worried. Nothing like taking another decent chunk of cash out of the poker economy
    3) there are still many, many fish out there. And there are even more ways to improve at poker than there are fish.
    4) I've been getting myself psyched on the prospect of 3 weeks of Thai limestone coming up more quickly than i expected!

that's it for the moment. Two weeks left in the month to try and crank out some profit, although i'll only be playing about 8 days of that.

cool weekend of no poker for the last 4 days and life is good.

Drove to another city. Friday arvo i picked up a bike, went for an icecream-headache swim (ahh, winter in the ocean), then a party for the night. Next day was supposed to be climb - but weather meant it was a no-go. Instead spent the day designing and building a dolly that a friend wanted for filming more climbing vids (here's his latest A few days at Castle Hill on Vimeo), then subjected myself to a training session with some power-mutants. For context, it was me + three of NZ's five strongest climbers (they all climb V12+/5.14b+). I, obviously, was out of my depth but it was heaps of fun. Sunday was hanging out with cool people and now i'm back in town, it's monday, the sun is shining, and it's unlikely i'll be playing poker.

poker-wise - i hit a downswing so i'm reacting in a mature fashion. I'm barely playing (7 days so far in august? - and 3/4 of my month's hands over a 36hr period), I'm withdrawing another few thousand, and i'm moving down in stakes while i sort my shit out. I'll stay online rolled for 100nl tho, just in case i ever manage to play well again.

10nl woot! bumping into penney et al.
rake seems pretty heavy down there, i'm running around +1.5ptBB/100 in rakeback..

oh, and to anyone who claims 10nl isn't soft - you're funny.

I would be interested in running a 100k hands winrate propbet if i could generate enough interest to make it worthwhile

    just stop playing like shit.
    what's the point.
is there anybody in here, is there anybody out there, check your fucking head out

only good thing is that i chose the micros for pissing my money away
withdrew another 2k just for good measure. Not much point staying rolled for 200nl at the moment. Time to invest the money in magic beans
