Default Prove I can beat the micros and learn to play better poker!

Okay, hey I'm Erik and I'm currently playing under the SN "head_felt" on Poker Stars. I've been playing poker for a while but not much for the last 6 months or so and never really gave proper Bankroll Management a fair shot despite being told to on this forum. I was to concentrated on making money instead of learning the game. I have a bit of free time now and I've decided I'm going to try to build a $100 BR at $5NL to a $1500 BR at $50NL by the time I graduate in April. I`ll be posting hands here as well as my stats, graphs, etc, and appreciate any advice I can get.

I started playing $5NL with 100bb stacks about 3 days ago and have doubled my bankroll up to $200, I`m going to post a few hands and some stats and I`m hoping you guys can be the judge if I just went on a huge heater for 20 BIs or if I`m ready for $10NL. Also any changes to my game you would recommend would be great. `
  2. #2
Also if anyone could tell me how to post images I`d appreciate it.
I didn`t save my first 2000 or so hands but the stats are similar I`d imagine:

    Total Hands 3,392
    Amount Won: $77.69
    Won per 100 hands: $2.29
BB won per 100 hands: 22.90

    VPIP 25.97
    RP 15.30

    Button 30 22 $31.98
    1 23 17.5 $35.23
    2 22 14.5 $25.47
    3 23 15 -$9.70
    BB 18 8 -$5.14

I`m performing $30 below EV as well because of two 400bb pot 25 to 1 beats.

My winnings are basically split between showdown and non-showdown which I found odd. But they are very consistently rising on non-showdown.

Here are a couple of question hands:

    Dealt to head_felt [Qc Qs]
    rein666: raises $0.10 to $0.15
    suspicaz: folds
    vaidoshis: folds
    edgar4567: calls $0.15
    head_felt: raises $0.35 to $0.50
    slimbubbles: folds
    rein666: calls $0.35
    edgar4567: calls $0.35
    *** FLOP *** [5c 6c Js]
    head_felt: bets $0.80
    rein666: folds
    edgar4567: raises $1.60 to $2.40
    head_felt: ???

Op seems like a typical $5NL whale, but that doesn`t mean he cant hand JJ 66 or 55. I think there is also a good chance he has a plain J or a flush draw, or is just spazzing. Raise, call, fold, also, what size raise if you choose that option?

This one I can`t find the HH for but I will do my best to put it together:

UTG station limps (he rarely PFRs), I raise to 30c with AdAc and SB calls as well as the UTG raiser

    Flop comes 4c4d10d
They both check and I bet 75c, they both call

    Turn comes Js
They both check, I bet $2, sb goes all in for $2.50 and UTG raises to $7 (I have him covered, I`m very deep)

Okay, here is my analysis, sb could have anything from FD to A4 to KQ to QJ, because so many people at this level spazz out if it was just him I would call.
Now, I am thinking that if UTG just called it would make a much more compelling case for me to fold. His $7 all-in seems like he thinks he is protecting a hand rather than trying to get me to call his JJ or 1010 boat. But what else did he call on the flop with, I suppose something like J10, AJ is possible, or like an AdQd, what would you do?
  3. #3
sorry stack sizes were not evident in the first hand, he has about $9 and i have him covered

First session of $10NL was good, the heater continued despite being stacked my very first hand at the limit with AKs verse KK and again on one of my last few hands with 33 on a 3588 board to 55, I thought I was trapping him lol.

    933 hands
    Amount won: $42.20
    bb/100: 22.62
  6. #6
End of the day bankroll: $287, over $140 profit in like 2000 hands at the micros today. I have two more hands but Im hoping to get some responses on these ones first so it is easier to comment.

Any reads on villains in these hands, particularly something more detailed than "5NL whale"?

Hand 1 is probably a shove assuming he's just a huge donk.

Hand 2 - Call, only thing you have to be afraid of is a 4...JJ and TT won't bet like this, so you can expect lots of combo flush/straight draws, stuff like AJ and JT (lol), and perhaps even KK/QQ since he is passive PF.

Hand 3, you have to think about what he's holding here (again, reads are very important--is he the type who will raise flopped top pair or thinks your overs missed the board and is trying to bluff you?). Calling is fine I think, as it will let you know give you info of what he donkbets with. Also, if you bet this river, what types of hands will call?

    Congrats on running well though!

Also, for converting hands, check the sidebar on the left.
  8. #8
Hand 1 no real reads, Ive been at the table for like 15 hands and hes clearly very bad but he hasnt shown this type of aggression, I suppose his range is probably really wide making it a shove.

I agree with hand 2 and thats what I did, was just wondering if i talked myself into it because i didnt wanna toss AA

I think he reraises two pairs, straights and sets here on the flop. I think his range is 44, 55, 99 maybe TT, A7, K7 maybe and a bunch of stupid hands that will just fold. I think I was a chance to get value out of his range... bet maybe 2.5?

And i will use the tool from now on, thanks

    PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (4 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

    SB ($15.45)
    Hero (BB) ($10)
    UTG ($9.85)
    Button ($15.95)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 4, 3
2 folds, SB calls $0.05, Hero checks

    Flop: ($0.20) K, 2, 2 (2 players)
    SB checks, Hero checks

    Turn: ($0.20) A (2 players)
    SB checks, Hero checks

    River: ($0.20) 5 (2 players)
SB bets $1, Hero raises to $3, SB raises to $15.35 (All-In)

    Total pot: $6.20
    Hero?

Villain is loose preflop and does not really play traditional poker, e.g. he will raise 10 bb UTG and then fold to a 3 bb flop bet instantly. When he bets this $1 which is over the pot size it says to me "I have a hand and I want to make something off it". I assumed he had trip 2s and I wanted to get a bit of value out of my straight. Im having a lot of trouble putting him on a range when he goes all in, no way he has pocket 5s,Ks or As, he could possibly have 22 I guess but more likely his range is 23 to 2A... If I believe that I guess I should call but I feel like K2,A2 maybe have more weighting? I dunno, help me out...

not sure if you are using any tools. if not, i would recommend PokerTracker to help you gain additional info on your opponents. good luck with your adventure.

I have poker tracker but when I 6 table it lags way too much, every time I open it it loads "duplicates" I don't know what that is but it really slows down my pc, and my pc is new

So I had a 8ish buy-in down swing which is just awful for micros and more awful because it was mostly tilt and just bad poker, my BR dropped to $230 from $287 but I took a day of and moved back to $5NL and played a little 1.5 hour session where I won just over 4 buy-ins but more importantly feel like I only made one very bad play and generally played good poker. Here is a hand for review:

    PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.05 BB (6 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

    Hero (Button) ($8.67)
    SB ($4.13)
    BB ($1.89)
    UTG ($13.49)
    MP ($8.77)
    CO ($1.85)

Preflop: Hero is Button with A, 8
1 fold, MP calls $0.05, 1 fold, Hero bets $0.20, 2 folds, MP calls $0.15

    Flop: ($0.47) 4, 5, 6 (2 players)
MP bets $0.25, Hero calls $0.25

    Turn: ($0.97) J (2 players)
MP bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

    River: ($1.97) 9 (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets $1.50, MP raises to $4

    Total pot: $4.97

So I stacked the Villain the hand before when he limped from the button with A3, I completed sb with A10 and flop came A103, we got it all in on the flop and from his previous play I feel like this definitely tilted him. In the hand in question Im floating the flop because I feel like if he has two pair or something he will let me stack him if a 7 comes, and if he doesn't have two pair i'll find out shortly and be able to get him off a worse hand. I insta called the flop and turn bet so he definitely could think Im fishing for a flush, I feel like he had some sense on the river, checked and then my bet made him tilt because it does not really say "I want a call" Im like so sure he has almost pure air, is an all in too spewy?
  13. #13
Also when I have shown such easy calls why wouldnt he bet his flush for value on the river, I havent been tricky or been stealing a lot of pots at this table, I would think that he would be quite confident in me calling him down if he bet the river

Barring a read that villian will c/r bluff the river, check it back. You need to be good 25% of the time here just to call villians raise. Villians range is 75%+ bluffs? I doubt it. He limp/calls preflop and leads into you twice with what look to be value bets even after your PFR. Im guessing some sort of pocket pair 77-JJ.

    Shoving = total spew.

you need to set it up to move the processed hand histories to a separate folder. Otherwise PT3 will try to load all hand histories played, including those already played. This will result in lag. Try asking for help on the PT3 website if you can't figure it out.

best of luck with crushing up through the micros, i'll look at the hand histories later

Okay thanks for the PT3 advice, I will work on that now I appreciate you taking the time.

I guess one thing that also led me to question that hand is how quickly he played the hand before, in the A3 A10 hand where I stacked him I checked, he bet out flop about pot, I CR 3 times his bet and he insta-shoved. He was a little tilted before that too. I feel like on this hand if he had any pockets, even deuces, he bets preflop trying to build a pot to make his money back, also he more likely pots or even a bit more on the flop and then bets like $2 on the turn when I show interest in continuing. I also think he bets flush draws bigger and leads out 95% of the time on the river, by the time he check raises I'd say chances are near 0 he has a flush. I did push and he folded instantly but I'm trying not to be results oriented because I am tending to agree with you that it is probably pure spew and way too unnecessary at $5NL lol. If I am to continue on the hand I do think all-in>call but maybe <fold because a lot of his range is like middle pair with a gutshot or something that will just fold and sulk because hes never putting me on a bluff when I push. Im going to think about it more but I think your right, 75% is a big number...

Having one of those annoying sessions where I feel like I'm playing pretty well but bad rivers and cold decks keep me around even, down about a buyin i think, gotta stay focused.

Okay a hand for review, OP is running 17 11 over 70 hands, ive 3 bet him twice in position and he has folded both times. I feel like he is a decently smart player and realizes my 3bet outta sb is probably pretty strong, i feel like he wont necessarily 4bet jj or qq, 99 88 77 66 are all posibilities and I really dont see him doing this with like A9. high fds are a possibility. easy fold?

    BB ($5)
    UTG ($3.98)

keep in mind im ~ 3 to 1 against if he has a low set or a high pocket pair (ranges slightly if he has a club or not with overpaid)

Villians range should be wider on the button. I like your 3bet and sizing as its tough to play TT OOP if you just flatcall.

You need ~30% equity to call the flop raise and have a 24% chance of improving by the river (four 7's and two 10's will improve your hand, though the 7c is probably only a partial out).

Try putting villian on a range and run that through pokerstove to see whether you have the required equity. I wouldnt discount overcard combinations such as KQ, QJ etc. I would however discount AA, KK, AK and probably QQ as well as most 5NL villians would be 4bet/shoving with these.
  20. #20
Ya, I think over pockets are very unlikely, but high cards as well, he would have to have way to much respect for me to expect me to lay down a range of like 99+ and AK to his reraise bluff. Id say his range is 66-99 + maybe A10c-AKc. I hate smooth calling here because I feel like Im fishing to a 6 outer and if I miss I fold turn 100% and I would be shocked if he didnt double barrels. I thought he had a set, talked myself into saying he had a wider range, shoved and he called with 66. Blehhh...

Here is a new one, interesting spot, I called, what would you do?? I feel like on the turn Im ahead sometimes althought Q10 scares the shit out of me and I almost tossed it there, on the river I beat like J8 and J9 or a horribly played AJ/QQ+... I guess its am easy fold?

woooo, from the bottom of that session I had like a 7.5 buyin up swing, how boat this one though? I have a bad habit of hitting draws against superdonks and winding up value owning myself against there stupid full houses lol. #2 is just a line check, the villain is an abc winning reg, do I bet turn? I figure easy b/f considering his range to me is like JJ QQ maybe 99 and like AKs... I doubt hes bluffing often and my guess is he has QQ tbh... what do you think?

ahh edit, dont have the HH

    but heres the basics

Villain raise 3bb utg, here raises to 10bb from sb with KhKs, heads up to flop

flop comes 10 8 7 with two spades, I bet out 12 bb (maybe low) and he flat calls. He raises with a set 100% in my mind.

turn comes the Qs I bet 20bb he raises to 40bb and I fold

Hand #1 - I think you can heavily discount AQ after the check flop/check turn line.

You need to bet the river more for value. As played, its an easy reraise/attempt to get it in.

Ya I thought so, I flat called going "oh no AQ!" which in retrospect looks pretty dumb, although I dont completely take AQ out of the range because some microdonks will check that for 2 streets. If we discount AQ do we discount KQ QJ Q10 to? because that basically leaves him with KJ (which he had lol)

ps my BR has officially passed 1000$ today, I have been running like god, like 150$ above EV, really not looking forward to someone flicking off my boomswitch

Okay so the size of my bankroll was tempting me to up limits before I was ready, the easy solution was to cash out 500$ so i did that.

I grinded 3375 hands of 10$NL today for +8 buyins, made two really bad all in call downs which I am disapointed in but other than that I feel like I am improving with a lot of advice from this forum
  30. #30
wowww, christmas morning noobs are so bad lmao, took a few coolers but made 1 buyin at 25NL... Probably wont play much for the next 7 days, going to silverstar in BC to board for a week

Alright so December's over as far as me playing poker is concerned. I finished the month +$581.14 and +$145 bonus.

I ran good and played better than I have previously but I'm not happy with my overall game or my tilting tendancies. I'm starting the new year with a $400 bankroll and really want to play better, learn more. I'm having a lot of trouble with PokerTracker HUD lagging like crazy so I basically have not used it at all. My plan is to clear the rest of my bonus on Pokerstars and then transfer $500 to Cakepoker. Cakepoker will give me $500 bonus, rake back and illegalized tracking software so I won't be at a disadvantage. After I clear that bonus I will hopefully have my Pokertracker situation figured out even if it means getting a new computer. Then maybe I will move to Partypoker since I have wasted my bonus chances on Full Tilt with a random drunk deposit ages ago.

Okay, before I get ages ahead of myself my poker playing goals are to get way more aggro from the button & cut-off and stop open limping... ever. Some of these things are just so habitual it is ridiculous. I also want to stop going to showdowns as often, I feel like my positive red-line has a lot to do with me stationing too many bets where I should be folding the turn/river.

I would love to get this $400 up to $1200+ so I can start taking shots at $50nl. I'm going to promise myself I don't take any shots til I am above that and feel good about my play.

Non-poker goals include keeping my average at the same level as first semester in my last year of University, get back to the gym and find a job I will actually enjoy for this May. Basically do not let poker take over my life whether I do well or poorly.

i am just getting raped all over, if my opponent isnt drawing dead i lose basically
  33. #33
okay I think i need to make some BR management rules. so my bankroll got to like 1200$ at one point and i took a shot at 50nl too early i think, ran horribly and dropped 4 buyins in like 300 hands then dropped to 25nl and jus tilt/ran like shit down to a low of 690$. i took a few days off and fixed some things and had a good 800 hands + 2 buyin session today at 25nl

    rules

current br 740$, drop to 10nl at 600$

take a shot at 50nl at 1400$, drop back down at 1200$

100nl at 3k drop down at $2700 and dont go back til 3500$ (ive heard 50nl is easier than 100nl so i think going slightly early 1 times may be +ev, i may change this later on)

200nl no clue, seems so so long away

i wonder if this red line is a leak, this is me so far in january

  39. #39
potential causes: 3 barrelling way too much, betting rivers too big with made hands scaring out opponents... not planning bets well to take full stacks? any other ones ppl can think of?
  40. #40
Ignore the line is my best advice. It can screw your game up if your thinking about it at the tables, (been there).

blehhhhh, so i moved up to 50NL finally, 1300 hand session and i ran fuckin horribbbblllllyyyyyy, lost 5 buyins for 250$ but my all in expected value was positive... so ya over 5 buyins under ev for 1200 hands and after that i was like 2 buyins down and tilted the next 3

wow so i moved to ipoker since every transaction method keeps getting rejected on cake and i have to say the competition is attrocious compared to stars. im 6 buyins under ev getting used to the site at 20nl, big surprise though
  52. #52
so I have been having a lot of trouble lately with actually getting to play poker. Pokerstars is not giving me my cashout and I do not know why, support isn't responding to emails. So I got money on iPoker but can't find a way to get money on cake/cereus because my credit card doesn't work and they don't have instadebit. Im trying to get clickandbuy to work. Through all this though I had a nice day on iPoker today, only one buyin below EV which is pretty awesome. Playing like a total nit though since Im under-rolled a little bit (started mixing a table or two of 50nl in with 20nl when I got my 600$ deposit to 800$... Right now sitting at about 1000$ thanks to today which is still too small a roll but when I get this 1600$ from pokerstars eventually itll all be good...

    anyways... brag from today

  53. #53
here is my misplay of the day, so brutal, read was way off... although him calling with QQ was pretty ballsy, that was part of the range I wanted to fold out

another good day, +almost 5 buyins, would have been more but I had some tilting bad luck vs some short, hes a 22$ stack at 50nl, i stack off vs him with 88 vs 44, he rivers the 4, very next hand we go again, i stack off with jj vs 55 hoping to get my money back and he flops a 5. so tilting, so i ended up just quitting since i felt the tilt monster creeping in.
  55. #55
Nice work on the quitting. It is seriously one of the toughest skills to master.

im like 9 buyins below EV in only 1300 hands lmao, luckily im up 8 buyins at 50nl in 1500 hands
  60. #60

it feelsss sooo good to run gooood at 50nl so far this month
  61. #61
well the 50nl heater continued, currently up 24 buyins this weekend (starting thursday). I quit after i got flopped flushed over flopped flush and then my 22 on a 234 flop didnt improve vs fishies 56. I dont even know how I played, it was just a blur of profit, when youre hitting it makes it a lot easier to let go of the hands that you should.

i feel like this one I maybe should have got off of, the guy was pretty nitty and is never bluffing. I dunno if i can put AQ in his range to make this a call. Ive seen him check like every flop he has hit and then either bet out turn big or c/r flop.

i check flop because jj/tt fold and KK/QQ/AA own me. maybe i should fold pre? b/f flop then check behind turn? maybe just fold river? river is a call if he can have AQ but I dunno if he ever does...

(hand converter not working, I'll convert later)

edit: there was a good thread on SHNL discussing this hand and ill speak to it a bit for anyone who may read in the future. Basically the river is a fairly easy fold, villains bet is never a bluff, both from reads and generally wouldn't be from any reasonable player, villain makes a psb for 100bb into 100bb pot on the river where he has to expect me to call fairly often. if villain has AQ (which he has to have in his range sometimes for this to be a call) then it makes no sense to bet 49.5 into 49.5 because he can only get called by better, AK/AA-QQ so he would much more likely bet smallish to get value from AJ or KQ. if he cant have AQ and cant be bluffing then i cant call, easy fold.

Sup Eragotte. Yeah that's pretty ridiculous, how did you manage that... Most players take quite some time to work from 5$ NL to 50$. I mean isn't 5-6 months / 4hrs per day / 6 days per week the norm for that type of jump? You seem to have done it in a heartbeat. You mentioned in your OP that you've been an online poker for some time, which I readily believe - but what stakes were you playing at previously? I just find it hard to believe a total nub could pull off what you just did consider it a compliment.
  68. #68
Ive been playing for like 4 years but more like gambling then playing. Id like deposit 200$ and sit with 50$ on 4 100nl tables and button mash. id played anywhere from like 25nl to 1000nl with random sized stacks. this is the second time i really tried to use br management, the first time i deposited 200$ lost 3 buyins at 10nl in like 10k hands and spazzed n took my br to 200nl and lost it. this time i was focused and determined and have been successful so far.

anyways here is febs graph, kinda disapointing volume but school comes first i guess

Also as an update, have barely played this month other than i jus tried rush on ftp and lost 7 buyins at 25nl in a couple hundred hands, i cant handle it, completely breaks my concentration lol
