Default Operation STOP SUCKING AT POKER ! ! ! !

Ok, i realize that no one really cares whether or not i suck at poker. I'm new here and most people don't even know that i exist, let alone care if i get better or just eventually get sick of losing/breaking even and quit poker for ever (which i don't plan on letting happen because i love it).

This is not to say that the people i have met here haven't been really nice and very helpfull to me, because they have, but i'm playing super low stakes ($5 NLHE and .10/.20 stud 8) and it isn't nearly as exciting as reading about Spoon going for Super Nova Elite or what ever you call it...lol

I'm doing this to force myself to be accountable for my actions and really take poker seriously. I think if i have to post my results (good or bad) and analyze my every move. It will, along with all of the info here, make me a better player.

I don't want to go on playing and never get any better. So if i have to embarass myself by posting that i lost money at the .02/.05 NLHE tables and post a hand with a horrible call i made even though i knew i was beat (both of which happened today..lol), then so be it. I'm gonna do what ever it takes to improve.

I've only been playing poker for a few months and i have MUCH to learn.
If there are any other newbs out there that would like to share info and discuss stuff as we progress, let me know.

Thanks in advance to everyone here for all of the great info, advice and help. Not to mention the stuff in the commune. That place is an instant tilt killer. I almost pissed myself when i read the "do you stand or sit" post.

    Default Day #1...

    Day 1- $5NL
    Hands played: 561
    Profit/Loss: +$6.11
    Flops seen: 114
    % of flops seen: 20.3%
    Big Blinds won: 120
    PTBB won: 60
    ptbb/100h: 10.69

If any of this looks wrong please tell me ! ! ! !

Bankroll $124.. not as much as proper BR
management says to have so if anything starts to go wrong i will drop down to $2NL.

Not a bad day. $6 isn't much, but i guess the win rate of ptbb/100 hands isn't bad.
I have to start to look at it like: if i was playing at a table where the blinds were bigger i would have made a decent profit.

I would appreciate any input, advice or comments anyone has.
    Positive or negative.

Wouldn't it be wise to this this anyway so that you are BR'd for the next level rather than waiting until you hit a downswing? Trust me, it's worth the effort.

    Default Yes

Your right, i guess if i'm gonna do it, i may as well do it right.

    BUT

Does proper BRM go buy 20 times the max buy or what???

Forget learning poker, i'm gonna have a brain aneurysm trying to figure all this shit out..lol

This is very smart and so much more important than the attention/existence of readers.

If you have a lack of discipline regarding game and hand analysis like I have, this blog/OP will help you more than anything else improving your game.

GL dude, I´ll stop by from time to time and help whereever I can

just move up following the 20BI rule, thats quite enough until u hit 100NL.

    My plan so far was

    $16 (lol) - 200 for 2nl
    $200 - $500 - for 10NL (no 5nl at Everest )
    $500 - $1k for 50NL
    $1k - $5k for 100NL

Nowadays you´ll here a lot of guys recommending a bit deeper roll, since post UIGEA games became more aggresive and less fishy. However, with >$100 you should move up to build you roll as fast as possible. Make sure to move back down when you hit $100 again and everything will be fine.

lol... maybe i'm too stupid to play poker.

I'm going with $5 Nl and only buying in for 100BB.
Which gives me the more than 20 times the buy in.

Then, the higher you get, take a slightly higher bankroll requirement than the stakes previous so that you better protect your poker bankroll.

Found this a few hours too late, but i thought i'd post it here incase i need it.

Your fine at $5NL, jsut don't buy in over $5 at the start. Also, watch the table stacks, and don't allow a 200BB stack be in danger when your having a good run. There is nothing worse than spending 2 hr's grinding a tidy profit, only to see some guy buy in for $10 and shove over your AA with KJo and suckout your whole days effort. Yea, we want that most of the time, but when grinding a BR, it's going to do more harm than good sitting at a table with 200BB's. I am not saying leave as soon as you get there, but be aware that the whole stack is in play if someone has you covered.

I can attest to this! I have lost four $10+ stacks in 2 days with AA.. its killing my /100 winrate. I just can't make myself move down to $5 stacks.. someone smack me.

    Default Day #2

    Day #2- $5NL- 2/3 Tables
    Bankroll: $126.01
    Hands played: 883
    Profit/Loss: +$2.01
    Big Blinds won: 40.2
    PTBB won: 20.1
    ptbb/100h: 2.27

I somehow lost the flops seen and % of flops seen, but if i remember correctly it was somewhere between 15-20 %. I think that is a little too tight, but i really got no cards and it seemed that every time i raised everyone folded. Also most of my good hands came when i was out of position, and that's (postional play) is one of the things i'm really working on improving.

I was down most of the day and very few hands went either good or bad.
Usually what happened was i raise with a good hand and then missed the flop. Then i either let it go or c-bet, depending on the board. Most of my c-bets didn't work and i lost the extra cash. Probably just unlucky or bad timing.
Need to work on when to c-bet or not.
The one good hand i had was just lucky for me but im gonna post it anyway because it was the only exciting one all day.
It was set over set, so i don't think i did anything great but be patient during the lull that was today.

    Default Day #3

    Day #3- $5NL- 2/3 Tables
    Bankroll: $123.70
    Hands played: 616

    3 DAY TOTAL
    TOTAL PROFIT/LOSS: $5.81
    TOTAL HANDS: 2060
    TOTAL ptbb/100: 2.76

Basically even for the day if not for the 2 huge mistakes.
Not playing aggressive enough, but can't seem to make moves at the right time. Trying to play tight, but it seems to hurt my action when i get a decent hand.
At this point the only think keeping me from losing huge, is that eventually someone does something stupid or just gets unlucky.
Can't get a read on anyone. From what i can tell these people are capable of calling with anything or nothing. Hopefully in time i will get to know some of them and figure out their "style". If they have one..lol a lot of them seem to just be winging it.
Need to watch some small stakes videos to get a grasp of what i might be doing wrong.

How do i put this guy on 58???
Sure i over played my one pair but good lord.
I figured he had a flush draw.
I'm not saying i shouldn't lose this pot, but at least if he has a set i wouldn't feel so bad. (which has happened to me 3 times today)

It's worth it if i can learn something, but i don't seem to have a clue how to play...

Feel free to tell me i'm an idoit, but then leave something constructive please. That's the only way i'm gonna learn.

You dont. You played this hand fine. Just remind yourself that people who call 8xBB raises PF with 85s are the guys you want to play against, but sometimes they'll get lucky. Calling your flop bet with a gutshot was even worse.

This was a nice hand, dont be too results oriented when stuff like this happens. 9:10 times this guy is just giving you free money.
Just dipping my toes back in.

    Default thanks..

    Thanks, i appreciate the comments.
However this was just one example.
My roll was $123 when i started today and now it's $104.41.
If this was the only hand that went badly i wouldn't care, but every hand i feel lost. I can't tell what anyone has, and i never know if i'm ahead or drawing dead. Even the days i do well, i feel it's because i got lucky.
If i don't flop the nuts, i don't seem to know where i am, and even then i'm worried.
In my defence, i had been concentrating on stud for the last month or so and before that i only played sit n gos and tourneys (free rolls mostly) and i din't learn much from them apparantly.
It's just gonna take some time and a lot of effort.
If i'm anything, i'm humble, and willing to put in the time.

    I'm starting over at $2NL.
There's no where to go but up from here... i hope..lol

    Hand 1 is fine btw.

Possibly a good rule of thumb is 'dont go broke with TP'. Hand 2 I do though.

"Big hand, big pot. Small hand, small pot".

Noone gets by without making mistakes, but you have to try to avoid expensive mistakes if you can. If the hands you lose are small pots, and the hands you win are big pots, then over time you become a winning player.
Just dipping my toes back in.

Look out for the subtle tilt. It's not an obvious difference to your play. It's a very slight change. But it happens so much. If you are ever playing poker with a defeatist attitude, or a hopeless attitude, you need to stop right away, because I guarantee you it's effecting your play even if you don't think it is.

    AQ jan 20th:
This hand would play so much easier when u´d raised preflop. Make it 8BB to go and keep yourself out of trouble. As played you have to fold river. The dummy end of a straight got it´s name for a reason

AQs: Given his shortstack I look him up.

    AJo: Played fine.

The opposition at micros can drive u nuts sometimes, most of us went thru the same crazy 58o and 73s action showing up busting our top set. That´s part of the game and it happens up to 200NL (maybe even higher, I have no experience yet at midstakes). Lean back, tighten up, take their money IN THE LONG RUN.

When u enter a pot everytime with the better hand you are doomed to win money

For his QAh hand what would you figure his opposition has? MP2 raised pre-flop indicating he had some sort of decent hand. With a flop of 4Q8 wouldn't you think QA is the better hand? I can see MP2 having QK or QJ.
Or are you thinking he hit his set?

I'm simply lookin to learn here as well.

Hand1 I probably would have called the dude. What am I missing?

MP could have a ton of hands, AA, KK, AQ, KQ, QQ, QJ, AsKs, JsTs, 88 and since he´s short I´d add JJ, TT as well. We have 60% equity.

I value bet, the chances of him having two diamonds, one of them aces is low. He could have a pair, a straight, a set, two pair, anything. Your fairly favored to win there, get you some $'s!

    Agreed.

Value bet/shove (shove looks like ~ a psb), and if he happens to have Ax of diamonds, so be it. You're playing your hand to hit 1 of your draws, so when it does, get the money in.

    Default woooo

Haven't been playin much, i'm having some personal crap going on, but i managed to make my goal of $125.
So now i can move up to $5 NL.

    $2NL Starting roll - $104.41

    Bankroll: $ 125.02
    Hands played: 3143
    Profit/Loss: $20.61
    Big Blinds won: 1030.5
    ptbb won: 515.25
    ptbb/100h: 16.39

So now i'm gonna move up to $5 NL.
Hopefully everything goes well and i will be able to get back to
playing a decent amount of hands per day.

Thanks to everyone for all the help, I Have a long way to go, but i feel like i am a much better player already because of you.
  36. #36

    Default Feb. 6th

    Feb. 6th $5 NL Starting Roll $125.02

    Bankroll: $ 144.43
    Hands played: 1702
    Profit/Loss: $19.41
    Big Blinds won: 388.2
    ptbb won: 194.1
    ptbb/100h: 11.40

I'm averaging around 20% of flops seen which is pretty tight, but i'm learning when to c-bet,and when to fire another shot on the turn.

My goal is to reach $300 at $5NL. Then i can purchase pokertracker and move up to $10NL. I will then have 25 times the buy in and will have some time to adjust to the play. BUT thats if and when i get there.

After 2 or 3 bad days.
    I'm down from $144 to $111.
So i'm dropping my PATHETIC ASS back down to $2 NL.
Sucks, but at this rate if i don't, i'll be broke in no time.

So here i go again starting over. It's a good thing i enjoy playing poker.

I'm staying there until i'm back up to $125 at least and maybe higher.

I'd appreciate it if someone could walk me through a few hands and let me know what they would be thinking/looking for. I'm a noob and need to learn how to think through a hand and figure out peoples ranges.
Sorry if some of these are dumb questions.

I figure if he has A A he re-raises pre flop and theres a good chance he has A J. If he flopped a set of Jacks, would he really push all in?? He might if he thinks i have a flush draw,
or maybe he puts me on AJ and thinks i will fold??

    Should i always be raising??
and is it a re-raise every time??

    Thanks...
  47. #47
Hand #1 looks good to me. I doubt your opponent is putting you on a hand. He is most likely just playing his cards. His range is wide enough that calling is good.

I would suspect he has some sort of TP hands, some flush draws, some PP's (including an outside chance of QQ/AA) and some other random shit (6x, 45, a gutshot draw, air).

Hand #2 looks fine. I may call occasionally, but I call river value bets way way too much.

As for play AQo, raise first in every time seems good. Raise over a couple limpers also seems like a good play. It's not a reraise every time. Playing this type of hand is easier if you can predict how your opponents are going to react to what you do, and what hands they will do this with. Are they calling every c-bet regardless of what they hold? Are they folding everything less than TP? Are they calling everytime they get a piece of the flop (even if it's a gutshot)? Figure this out and then play the way that makes them make the most mistakes.

    A. Your probably up against KQ here so this is a standard hand. I'd put him all in on the river though since he is so short.
    B. This is fine
    C. I'd check behind him on the turn to keep it cheap just in case he has a Q.

Raise that AQs on flop. U have a gazillion of outs and may be even ahead already. It´s nice to keep MP in the hand, but even minraising would have brought the same amount of money in the pot. Raise for value and to somewhat disguise your hand, many stations dont expect u to raise a fd and will therefore be more willing pay another bet when ur spade hits.

i am noticing a lot of people telling you, repeatedly, to RAISE THAT SHIT!!! sounds like you may be too passive. dont go betting like a monkey, but raise your good stuff, and follow through a bit more.

as for BR management, although, you are doing it correctly, i think you need to wait a bit longer before you force yourself down.

when you move up...do it by BIs for the higher level...like you are.

when moving down...do it by BIs for the lower level. you are pulling the plug to a little variance...and frustrating yourself.

you have proven you WILL move down...and thats great...but, next time dont move back down until you get to about 40 BIs for the lower level.

    5NL, move up when at $125 (25BIs...fine)

move back to 2NL when at $80 (40BIs).

you still have a helluva cushion, we know you will move back down, and you give yourself more of a chance to survive the variance you may be experiencing while adjusting to your new level. after all, thats what bankroll management is for, right?

You played the hand fine. I didnt see the results, the fact you posted the hand suggests he had a random 2?

good hand. i make a rule to never fold overpairs at these levels. and by never, i mean 90% of the time....sometimes its obvious, but by this hand...sometimes it looks scary, but its just TP being reaaaaallly stoooopid.

dont fold overpairs, as a rule, down here.

32/8/1.3 = he has a quite wide limping/calling range preflop; he´s raising something like 66+, AJs+, AQo preflop (depends on his position-awareness); he´s raising pretty tight postflop, but I won´t pay much attention to AF´s over less than 200 hands

    wes,

what i do/did was adjust PT's autorate to match ME. i know my range. so, looser than me is loose (and i know he plays wider), tighter than me plays a tighter range. more aggressive. more passive. etc etc.

i run 18/9/2.25 so, 18+ is semiloose. 30+ is loose. <9 is passive pf. >9 is aggressive pf. <2.25 is passive post flop and >2.25 is aggro post flop.

and, i "read" from there. its not perfect, but i feel i'm fairly decent with it.

btw, include your "went to SD" numbers on the players...if you have GT+. you need to see how often they are/arent folding.

if someone is going to showdown more than 33%, dont bluff them because they will call you down. i dont care how aggressive they are. not all calling stations are passive.

    #1 is fine.

#2 we all suck at ranges but we could try to give him a more specified range. I agree with discounting QQ+, JJ depends on style. His small and mid pp´s are getting marginal implied odds, but we can assume he doesn´t know that. There might be some sc´s in his range, but I doubt anything below JTs. On flop it hard to read his hand without knowing anything else about his tendencies. Stacking off w/ TPTK requires a read villian will get in with less.

    Hand 1

Once you 3-bet you have to call the push because of stack size. Stanard

    Hand 2

This could easily be QJ/QK/QT, but those are really the only hands you beat on such a dry flop. I think its more likely this is 55/99 or Q9. Could be AA/KK I guess if he likes to slow play or JJ/TT if he's crazy lol. I'd be nice to see stats for this guy, if you've go them? If he's nitty I guess folding to the flop c/r isn't too bad on such a dry flop.

I guess my only criticism is the 3-bet size pre - its pretty big. Make it more like 0.3/0.35.Other than that WP

one..i stack off with AK against a shorty like this all day. i say, nh. i might have tried to 3bet bigger for him...to $1. but, whatev. thats semantics.

two...first of all...TOP UP. dont let yourself fall below $4.50, if at all possible.

preflop reads are pretty good, but dont assume AK/AQ 3bets because you do. you need a player specific read there. generally, tight-passives (12/4 types) will only call raises with AK/AQ, and likely wont even open raise them. but, again, thats player specific. that said, i like the 3bet there.

i dont know about pushing over here. i dont like felting TPTK to a c/r. not much that YOU beat will do that to you. JJ isnt check/raising, TT isnt, QJ isnt. ya know?

i love your river. it may have just bailed your ass out. unless villains had 55 and 99, obv.

if villain thinks you cbet too much, he may have pulled this, but i dont give 5NL players any credit for playing back against habitual cbettors. i'm sure there are a few of them, but i am happy enough to give this douchebag credit for the better hand here.

i say "douchebag" because i hate to lose.

what happened here, imo, is you got "stack happy." try not to do that on such dry boards...

i'll be happy to see what anyone else says, as i could be off on this one.

Thanks to all of you, for your help.
I really appreciate you taking the time to help out someone you barely know. I am learning so much (i hope ..lol).

I just got Poker Grapher, so im posting a graph damn it..lol
Even though i know its a little early to judge my progress.
I wanted to make it bigger, but every time i tried, it was fuckin huge.
So i settled for this. If you click it, you will see a larger version.
Click it a second time and it becomes clear.
