check flop to let him cbet nice.
"Tried representing a big Ace on turn"
so you were turning your hand into a bluff?
Why not 4bet pre? His 3bet size just says he sucks.

played just over 700 hands last night and finished down 13$ with BR now at $407.08 and 1095 fpps. didnt really get into any big hands just lost or folded lots of smaller ones. Had my obligatory losing AA against QQ all in preflop just cant wait till they start winning 80% . Wonderland watched for a short time , and my resuslts could have been a lot worse , folded some 'stealing' hands just on a feel without even trying to steal and villain showed AA each time.

Just finished a swingy session .....was up 15 $ on one table early on and Monsieur chat came and sat on my left , had to steal some of his blinds naturally and then managed to spew all that 15 off bluffing AK against TT ick ...should have known better. Had been reading Jason's blog earlier as well where he said to beat 10 NL you don't have to bluff .
this put me back in negative territory for the night after having been up a buyin. Regrouped , rammed the not bluffing into my brain and went on a massive heater. Finished with Roll on 450.63 and then cashged in 1000fpp for 16$ bonus to leave me on $466.63 and 143.5 fpps.played 769 hands for a profit of $ 43.55.

This month has also been good with net profit of $117.55 in 8142 hands to give a bb/100 of 14.44 and 44.6 steal %

You stole my blinds like 3 times lol. And you said you were playing nice

some of the action from last night.....this was me being a complete spewy spewtard and is memorable for reminding me of the BC post about not being able to make them fold at the micros. Also interesting is that he went all in with a medium over pair against a SB 3bettor. Whats my likely range got to be JJ+ AK bearing in mind he's either seen me raising as a steal or folding.Semibluff from me in a way as there was still a card to come.

this I think I played badly and was probably a bit of get some value out of him on the river or he'll fold if he missed his flush draw....check raise on the river I'm thinking set , or flush . Should have checked behind on the river. One thing Ive noticed a lot on 10 NL is people slow playing there sets against me. checking behind has saved me a lot on dangerous boards or where someone has just called down all the way OOP.

been busy workwise this weekend so limited sessions on friday and saturday night. Friday was frustrating. lost a stack with turned set losing to a slowplayed flopped set and another stack with KK<66 .
Saturday was only a short session as well. 172 hands for a $13.40 profit. Suprise suprise .....AA actually won a half stack having got it all in PREflop against AQs. Other big winner was this ...and was it the worst played AA ever. All the time I was offered odds to stay in the hand.

    19/6: AKo hand
PF: Ok - AK ahead of his likely range. SPR good for TPTK type hand.
Flop: Bet is too big. if he's folding, he's folding to a 1/2 PSB or smaller. $1 is fine. I'd read your hand to want a fold so as villain I wouldn't expect you to have a made overpair. If you do have an ovepair, what's the hurry in getting the money in? WA/WB should apply.
Turn: Spew. Which hand in your range completed? 87? Really? When he calls the big flop bet he's not going away. You are semi-bluffing yes (6 outs) but where is your fold equity?

    19/6: AJo
PF: I normally steal smaller - SSNLHE suggests the bigger steal size if up against an opponent calling too much pre-flop. If he's fit-or-fold after the flop it's a bigger pot going down to cbets, if he's calling station post it's more streets of value from his second-best hands. No reads tho?
Flop: Fine. Good size considering flop texture.
Turn: Too small turn bet. I'd go for $2 or PSB. Your hand just lost a lot of relative hand strength, but the As makes a second barrel mandatory. If your opponent is not folding turn to a bet he is likely also calling a reasonable river bet - if you make the bigger bet the river bet can gracefully be an all-in when you hit your flush, or if you are thus inclined - if the J or A should hit and you think you're ahead (though I'd possibly check behind those hands also.) A big turn bet both maximises your fold equity from hands that beat you (two pair and set) and gives you best implied odds against hands that currently beat you (made flushes and sets) and gives you best value from hands that you beat (KsJx, other Ks hands)
River: Check behind is good. You're not getting value from worse and you're not folding out better. Not with this bet size at least. Even then I don't think a shove is better EV than a check behind. Folding to his small raise is also good.

    19/6: TT
PF: Not comfortable. Happy to stack off against shortie. Not getting set odds. OOP. Do you think you can profitably steal?
Flop: Perfect flop - fully committed. Bet size good.
    Turn: Good.

    19/6: KQo
    PF: Fine
Flop: cbet could be smaller. We are looking for calls from weaker and the flop is semi-dry. When min-raised I think I'll flat. Typically min-raise means this player will 99% of the time see a showdown. People generally don't expect to elicit folds when they min-raise. Ignoring the raise size, is he happy to get into a raise war on the flop with JT or a single pair? His solid range is pretty much sets and two pair. 5 combos of sets and 4 combos of KQ. 6 combos each of K2 and Q2 I don't really count as solid seeing as I normally don't put K2 or Q2 in preflop calling ranges. He might decide to spew with AK or AA, but why? Against a decent player I would tend to not commit on the flop but just flat. Once we raise and he shoves we do have to call though. A good player could have JT in his range and a bad player could have Q2. A range of KK/QQ/22/JT has enough equity that I'd prefer to flat and see a turn. I don't think I could profitably get all-in on the flop against that range. Against the wide range of a bad player that includes AK, K2 and Q2 getting the money in on the flop is probably best.

    22/6: 98s
    PF: Fine
Flop: Fine. Could maybe have raised smaller but not below $6. With his overbet he wants to get the money in in a hurry and it's always tricky to know how to bet to make sure he stays with his plan. I think the general obvious commitment raise here that "accidentally" leaves money behind is a good play. Especially good if the move is insta as it keeps his adrenaline up and prompts him to act quickly.

    22/6: 87o
    Fine.

    .
I think this basically sums up the troubles I'm having with big pocket pairs . By trying to get the money in early I'm folding out the hands I'm beating and not winning much off them as a result and doing the work for the pairs that have flopped their sets.

It can be tough. How many tables do you play? Getting good reads is important to determine which players will play based on your raise and then help figure out when you're ahead and should be extracting value or when you may be behind and should try to get to a cheap showdown or simply fold.
    - Jason

  10. #85
    AKo:
    PF: Fine
Flop: Fine, I guess. Your arguments for betting big (if you bet) include a somewhat wet flop and it being multiway. Of course any flop with two of one suit is somewhat wet, but we have to realistically ask how much of our opponents' ranges include hands like T8s. In this case this is probably somewhat borderline. Micro players don't seem to judge low/medium suited connectors over random unsuited broadways. There is a flush draw out there so it does feel like a bet is necessary, but while SPR looks good for top pair, it really isn't when the flop is multiway - you need a smaller SPR on multway flops. Your TPTK is up against the best of 3 other hands - not a single opponents hand. You still get value from worse aces and sometimes hands that have decent equity against you will fold or call incorrectly so betting seems solid.
Turn: Turn changes nothing in terms of relative hand strength, but the guy did call the flop. I wouldn't necessarily hate a check behind. I don't think pot control is the wrong impulse in this situation and it could trump giving a free card. If you bet you don't expect to fold out any better hands, so you have to be expecting value from worse. Which worse hands will call here? Random aces? I'm not sure there's much value here from worse hands. Bet size if you do bet - I guess you could do $3 on the turn and the rest of the river and hope for the weak aces to come along. Or slightly less. Probably not $2 though. Check-raise here is kind of the typical TPTK is no longer good enough raise. You need to be good about 20% of the time for calling to be mandatory. AA is 1 combo, 99 is 3 combos, 77 is one combo. 97 is 6 combos. A7 is 4 combos. A9 is 6 combos. T8 is 16 combos (but Td8d is only one). Ax is 78 combos. How often has each of these sub ranges arrived on this turn? How often do they check-raise? If you had any reads on the opponent that suggested he wouldn't checkraise with T8 or Ax it could be a fold. I think the key is that he doesn't expect you to fold. When he doesn't expect (or want) you to fold - TPTK is no good. Folding would probably be fine.

    KK:
    PF: Fine
Flop: He check-raises small. I find it worth keeping in mind that min-raises are 99% of the time a sign of commitment. At least unless an opponent has min-raised as a bluff before and you have a note. I probably flat here. We have to consider sets significant in his range. He wants you to call.
Turn: If the opponent is a nit I might bluff at this card. I'd almost prefer any other spade though. If it was an otherwise unthreatening spade completing the flush I could wait a bit and bet $4 (if flatted) or all-in (as played). With the ace, however, it is too likely my opponent will read my hand as an AK/AQ type hand and then he would only fold if he couldn't beat that type of hand. As played checking through is fine.
River: I just fold here. If he doesn't have the full house he has a flush or an ace. He's betting for value - he wants you to call. Time to disappoint him.

    AA:
    PF: Fine
Flop: Hmm, you want to look as if you're bluffing? You're committed and stacking off regardless, but do you think this line gets the maximum value from hands that you beat?

    AQo:
PF: Ok, you treat the min-raise as a limp and look to set up a good SPR for your hand. Not an unreasonable idea, but I think the numbers don't add up. If the PFR calls your SPR is less than 2 - that's almost putting in too much money preflop before your hand is made and almost commits you preflop even if you miss. Maybe a raise to $0.60 works a bit better creating a pot of $1.45 with $4.4 behind and an SPR of 3. If the cold caller is your only customer you have an SPR of 8 - too big to commit with TPTK even if you hit. Against him the $0.60 raise gives an SPR around 13 which makes it easier for you to steal post flop, which is likely where the most value can be gained from that opponent. Especially since you have position.
Flop: As played you are committed and calling is the only thing.

    AKs:
    PF: Fine
Flop: Dry flop cbet can be smaller like 1/2 PSB. Can argue to increase bet size due to it being multiway, but with just 3 players I'd probably still stick to $0.70 to keep more weaker hands calling.
Turn: I think you may have leveled yourself here. I think you think that you discount a $2 bet down to $1.90 to make it look less threatening and encourage calls. But I think the opponent instead spots weakness and pounces on it. Read your own hand. What is in your range here? Maybe 77-KK. Any ragged ace could think that it's raising here for value? Sets are certainly in the villains range, but two pair? Which two pair? 63? 96? A9? Ok, maybe A9 (or even A6 or A3), but you have one of the aces so that's some fewer combinations of that again. I'm not sure $1.90 is the right bet size. I might favour $2.20 or even $2.50. It does show apparent strength and if called I would worry about two pair - but if raised I'd be able to feel good about folding. And I think those are both better bet sizes for bluffing next time I end up here with KdQd.

AA : preflop was kinda what threw me. went for the 1.90 to try and price out smaller pocket pairs by destroying their set odds.

AQ should have stuck his stats in. he was a 41/18 over 19 hands so I just didnt believe he had a premium hand.

AK : villain was 24/7 over 366 hands. when i saw the shove i was thinking the A9 or 99

For Jason ....I play 3 tables

posted my june 10K stats in begfinners circle and have had a bitof an AHA moment . found a/the problem but digfficulty is now interpreting how to solve it . This has resulted from trying to fix an earlier problem of losing a lot of value to check raises on the river. The solution I was using has caused me to lose value so I'm going to have to try and find a happy balance.
I've been thinking about this a lot and finally managed to work it out (I think). I was running into lots of check raises on the with people slow playing monsters. Net effect has been to transfer red line winnings (they fold to river bet) to show down winnings.
Looking at the graph though, my win rate seems to have slowed by doing this as I'm not getting any river value from

: Ax missed draws who think that A high may still be good
: bottom pair hands when my draws miss. Checking behind just gives them a showdown win instead of having to make a decision as to whether their second/bottom pair is good or even high cards as they missed their draw too.
: From my top pair hands where I protecting myself against two pair and sets.

the advantages are people slow playing monsters don't get to check raise me and put me to a decisionto fold or call that extra river bet. There do seem to be an awful lot of people slow playing their monsters lately and checking behind on the river has shown me this but for every time I think I did the right thing checking behind there I end up thinking that I'd probably have won the hand if i'd bet the river as they'd have folded the air /bottom pair type hands.

This is something I'm going to have to work on to try and figure out who to check behind and who to bluff on the river having shown aggression throughout the hand.

ok so I've been slacking in posting my results the last few days .

the UK $2000 added $2+.20 erm zilch
started my cash games and was pretty quickly down a buyin
and then it happened .....massive heater across several tables + some mega bad beats on the river. started on $448.18 and 335.5 fpps. Ended on $489.03 and 395.5 fpps.
Lost a stack as usual with AA all in on the flop vs QQ and he hit his Q on the river.

well after the elation of last night and hitting pot after pot tonight was an absolute fucking nightmare . I was rivered left right and centre. 1287 hands played for a loss of $51.65 and the bankroll back down at 437.38 and 463 fpps. So 37 more to cash another 8$ bonus out.

    Nightmare hands:

Hand 1 KQo: Without stats / reads that villain is 3betting wide I think I fold to avoid situations exactly like this. As played I'm folding turn all day long.

    Hand 2 KK: Nh.

Hand 3 AQo: Personally I bet out on the flop, as I don't like giving away a free card here, I really don't want xhxh chasing for free. As played I think I fold and then punch myself.

Hand 4 TT: I don't mind floating here (although floating OOP generally sucks). I think on the turn, without reads, we have to give villain credit for a Jack or an overpair. I mean do you really want to call a shove on the river? I don't quite see what you're hoping for OOP in this hand.

Hand 5 TT: Minraising this flop sucks imo, so many of his potential holdings are either re-raising or just flat. Either raise properly if you think you can get him off his hand or flat his cbet and hope for a nice turn scarecard to barrel. Personally I've found the second of these more profitable at 10nl.

Hand 6 QQ: Gah I hate hate hate that turn. I'm pretty stuck here myself. On the one hand I totally understand why you're slowing down the betting, but the problem is I think we're leaving ourselves in a tought spot when he calls, especially OOP. Then again, checking blows hard, so maybe we have to b/f but bet more, maybe 2.80. Probably one for someone with more experience.

    Hand 7 KK: Nh imo.

Hand 7 KTs: Hrm, think I do the same but don't know if this is right. Another one for Erpel

it was a highly frustrating night all round : juiceforfish was a 38/31 with 30% 3bet TT vs J6 so I just wasn't beleiving him. These were just some of the assorted lowlights.
Spent a bit of time today (couple of hours actually) going through my database against the guy I have the most number of hands on. Wow did this open my eyes up to his game much more than actually playing with him. Patterns in his play are obvious and stand out a mile from the hands he did take to showdown so that I can start top infer what hes got/had when hes playing. This is my updated read on him over 900 hands from all his show downs.I regularly get him on one or two tables and he multitables a lot playing 18/8. If any one else is interested in doing some in depth read swaps so we can get some better reads on players pm me.

Why he called with the 56s I've no idea at least I had a high card chance as the only hands he beats are 64 54 of which only the 64 may have been playing but would they really stack off to the stupid end of a straight?

Can you elaborte on that ....at the moment with the way the last two nights have gone I'm just not sure whats what anymore. Was I getting lucky with my hands before or have I just been unlucky to miss all my big draws now.
    what was more frustrating though
2 AA 3 bet and didn't see flop on one and a shortie went all in on the other .net profit 2$.
    3 KK's 1 raise to 4bb and 2 3bets and didnt see a flop for net $1.30.
    3 QQ raise 2 to 4bb and 3bet 1 and didnt see a flop for net $.85
1 JJ 3bet to $1.20 and didnt see flop for $.45

Take a break dude. It looks to me like you're tilting understandably and trying to push margins that aren't there to be pushed. When you don't make money off of your big hands it can be tempting to try to push to make that money elsewhere.

There are so many money making spots at these stakes, but you sometimes have to let them come to you.

Take a couple of days off mate.

    H1- Shove turn ldo
H3- Bet a little harder, but the bluff is fine imo.
H4- Raise more pre. Again, you need to isolate larger to thin the field. You're never ahead when you're raised on the river unfortunately...

start off with a couple of the losing hands. Pleased in a way with not stacking off on this but can't help wondering whether a smaller river bet or checking behind would have been a better line to take.
Interesting that he called the river bet when flush draws could have completed. The line I took on the river was bet fold fully expecting flushes to reraise me but hoping to take the pot there and then. I think check behind would have been the less spewy option though I'd never have known if he'd folded to the bet.

    villain was 54/23

this hand I can't decide if i played it well , could potentially have spewed , or played it horribly (though not as bad as villain).
villain was 23/20/4 over 54 hands. Was thinking that if I hit my diamond or possibly another Q or a K may be good when I called the 4$. With the nut flush draw on the flop should I have just shoved? as it was with the cards as they were I had 24% equity : against a range of 22+,A2s+,KTs+,QJs,JTs,T9s,98s,87s,7d6d,65s,54s,43s ,A9o+,KJo+ it was roughly a coin flip on the flop.

felt bad about cutting and running so played another orbit . Play on villains part was questionable .I could easily have been on an over pair or better on the flop and therefore they as far as they could tell they were potentially just on 5 outs or less.

Hey gl with your Operation I'm just going to comment on the hands you posted.

    1. Fine, I probably bet river too, he's going to call with a host of Kx hands that you beat.

    2. In hand 1 you have a poster and make it 5x, here you make it 4x?
Flop is bad, turn is ok if that's what you planned to do on flop. But vs fish its pretty bad all round.

    3. No poster and you 5x it. With these three hands I now presume you 5x AA/KK/QQ/JJ/AK type hands and 4x the rest - exploitable if someone is paying attention. Bet more on flop too drawy - more like $1.20. Bet slightly more on tuirn to set you up a less thyan PSB shove, say $2.30. If he's drawing it's still likley he'll call.

    4. Raise more on flop - look atthe pot size, not his bet. I'd raise to somewhere around $2.70 and call it off or shove turn.

    5. meh, i could see c/c flop or b/c flop sometimes. Thing is your implied isn't great as people are rarely goignt o be calling big bets when the 4th diamond comes unless they have Qd or something. or they are retarded. Turn is pretty bad imo and considering you c/c $4 on turn you need to make significantly mor eon the river to compensate for the lack of pot odds on the turn. And given the fact the board is goign to be 4flushed it's goign to be hard to get paid if you make a significant bet.

    6. Depends how loose the UTG opener is, but sometimes I'm not a great fan of squeezing here - esp if UTG is tight froom UTG. If he's fairly loose then sure squeezing is fine - but you need to look atthe reasons, not just LOL AQs SQUEEEEZE. You're 3b size is too small also with 3 in the pot already.

    7. Fine if you think he calls it off with Kx or Asx. I probably just make it 1.70 and calla shove or get it in on a safe turn.

    8. I'd bet river, to get value from worse Ax and Qx type hands it's also possible that Kxdd rivered a pair. It's unlikley he has a set/AQ/AK with combinatronics and the fact he only limp/called preflop and didnt raise any street. I would also make my turn bet slightly larger say $3/$3.20.

    9. 3x UTG wat - sort out some consistency with your open sizes from all positions no matter what your cards. The flop is pretty drawless so I might just call the flop raise and get in in on the turn. It's pretty unlikey you've been oversetted and reatrds will get it in here with TT and sometime raise hands like 66/77. So I wouldn't want them to fold to a shove, coz ur shoving range will prob be llike QQ+/sets on this dry flop. Villain was obv retarded to getting it in here.

Hey Muzz thanks for the feedback . Generally tend to open 4BB +1 per limper except Btn when its 3BB + 1per limper.

Have top admit in hindsight it was cringworthy , no point in just posting the good stuff , the mistakes are where I should be learning the most.

bit of experimentation to try and thin the field a bit with QQ. Flop I was trying to keep callers in to build the pot. Same on the turn . Things I didn't consider were what happens on A or K on the river and up against overpairs.I thought KK and AA would have 3bet pre or raised on the flop though. They could just have been letting me do the betting for them though.

I was trying to thin the field and possibly take down a nice pot there and then. Had no idea how big my 3 bet should be though, Posted a thread about a situation like this in BC where I went 1.70 and was told 1.70 was too big and that 1$ would have been a better size . THink I had AA then though.

he was so tilted I think if i'd bet .40 he'd probably have shoved.

I was on my way outta there . it was literally last hand I was going to play and had already shut down all the other tables . I was expecting to get reraised and then try and decide whether i had set odds to call. raising smaller seems to get a smaller 3bet which could help preserve my set odds. No doubt i'll have to sort this out when i move up but it seems to work down here at 10nl.

Just keep something consistent pre, esp when you start moving up. True you want callers but FD's and staright draws aren't folding to a bigger flop bet. You can make the turn a smaller proportion due to the fact you've just nutted the board and you want to keep the draws in. However, you don't want it to be that you have to overshove the river when you could have made it a 2/3 river shove.

Pretty bad play from KK/AA whatever he had anyway.

Yes, but we have to think about UTG, how strong his opens from UTG are and how often he folds a to three bets and what range he'll continue/4bet with. Anyway, the bet is too small pre - In the AA hand you talk about it was minraised not 4x-ed so there was less money in the pot when you did 3bet.

he was so tilted I think if i'd bet .40 he'd probably have shoved.
Ok, but what if he had like Asx and you just gave him a nice price to draw. Just raise it up try to get it in. We need to value bet the crap out of ppl at 10nl. That's how we win moneis.

You shoudln't really be calling 3bets to set mine OOP with marginal implied odds.

the heater continues : finished the night up $26.40 with the bank roll on $502.38 which is one hell of a comeback considering that on saturday or was it sunday the roll dipped to about $386 briefly . It could have been soo much better if it wasn't for this cooler towards the end of the night.

as usual start with the losses
villain was 50/7/3 and I thought was on a smaller pocket pair and when the river came I thought i had his low pair crushed even if he had hit his set. Didn't figure the flush would have hung around that long.

This was against a 36/20/1 . I've seen her check call down a K3s flopped flush draw that missed and go all in on a TPTK hand on the turn. This is a hand i really need to work some maths on . I hit my set and turn bet is reraised when a flush came in. I took that to mean that she had the flush......could just have had a strong flush draw or possibly even paired the Queen. need to work out whether it would pay to stay in and see if I can boat up.
11 cards for boat on river so 11/46 so 23% of hitting boat on the river.
I would be calling 2.85 to win a pot of 10.40 or 27.4 which would be tight fold unless we factor in some Qx hands.
or should i be calculating putting 2.85 in to win the 7.55 already in the pot 37% easy fold.

Is it reasonable to factor in any TPTK type hands here , but I don't think she'd have reraised her flush draws from the way she played the other hands : variation of hand I posted in BC.

OK , so my best session ever playing nearly 1800 hands and I'm left felling disappointed with the $64 profit I ended up with. This could easily have been my first 100$ session except for some suckouts and getting owned by a 90/0 fish. I had 60$ on one table at one stage and she and the suckouts ended me on about 30$ on that table.

this hand she commits half her stack with 4 outs

anyways ......lots more hands that I could post but meh..........

I generally felt that I played well last night. Kolonel was sposed to join in a sweat session but didn't see him online so just carried on playing and making money. Was back to 4 tabling , but its ffffffing hard to take notes with the input focus contiually getting nicked from the note window...type the note and look up to see it was a waste of time , nothing there and a couple of windows waiting for action.
  36. #111
oh what a week its been. This time last week I was down 10 BI's and wondering what I'd done wrong. Played a shortish session last night for a $47 profit. This means that I've made about 184$ in the last week since the bottom of the trough ( includes a 8$ fpp bonus though) . It also includes the -$43 session as well when I insisted on donating on made flushs. Heres the last weeks graph.

  37. #112
Ok , so what have I changed.

I think its all started as a result of going through some of the hand historys of people that I've racked up a lot of hands against and seeing what they've shown down and how they've played their hands. Quite a revelation when you look at hand after hand . You get a feel for how they play but its also given me ideas about how I could change how I play so that I don't lose as much and win more.

so what have I changed .

    1.
I think I'm cbetting less than I was , actually I've just checked ...I am .....63% before last week , 50% this week.
What ??? you're saying, we've always been told to cbet. I think I'm just cbetting more effectively especially when out of position and I've missed the flop or connected weakly with it when in position. Why bloat the pot ? It may just check round and go for a delayed cbet on the turn or I may connect . If someone comes out betting strongly on the flop and I've got nothing and no strong draws . hell its only 4bbs I'm down ...toss it and win a bigger pot elsewhere.
If someone comes betting weakly at the flop I make a decision whether to call (is it a fish) or fold (normally) or occasionally raise with overcards , draws and a gut feel that the bettor has very little either (rare).
I was going to write a whole spiel about how I think that this has affected how people react to my play but I'm still working it through at the moment. One effect is that I am considerably strengthening my cbetting hands . Consider someone cbetting 90-100% . They only connect with the flop 1/3 of the time so 2/3 of the time they are bluffing. With a strongish hand on the flop it makes it easier to raise them and since they have air 2/3 of they'll fold a lot of the time. On the other hand , by cbetting 50% , I appears that I have a hand 2/3 of the time and bluffs 1/3 of the time so that when I am cbetting I can bet flop turn and river as I have a hand that has connected with the flop. How much I'm betting obviously depends on how well I connected with the flop , how well I think they connected and general reads on the opponent.
I'm further manipulating my cbetting range OOP by check call/check raise depending on opponents . Therefore it appears from my 50 % cbet stat that I hit the flop 2/3 time in reality it may only be half the time as some of the time that I hit the flop I'll be letting aggro players do the betting and getting money in with air thinking that they can bluff me off the pot since they'll have seen me raise pre and having check folded some flops before reraising them either on the flop or turn.

    2. I'm altering how I play with regards to other peoples bets as well. I have to thank Jyms for his OP and griffey's advice to him about folding to 3bets should be over 66%. I was hovering around 50% so I'm making a conscious effort to tighten this up. I still don't respect a min 3bet from a fish raising my 40c bet to 70c. I'd be cbetting more than that 30c anyway probably so depending on my hand strengthits either a call or a reraise.

    3. After my trip to IRC I've altered how I play my premiums preflop. if I can I'll try and get QQ+ AK in pre. Once the flop has come though . A lot of their strength has weakened . From being a stack off hand they now just become a top pair hand (if that ) so that I will pot control them a lot more and QQ on a AKx flop to action is a pretty easy fold.

    4. I've definately altered how willing I am to stack off street by street . The flush hell i had this week has certainly made me slow down against potential flushes. Overall , I think the value lost on winning hands is a lot less than $ lost on losing hands.

    5. I'm stealing less 37% now compared to 40% before. It may be a subtle difference but I'm trying not to do it with complete crap anymore unless theyre a 8/6 100% fold to steal and its free money. Before it seemed to be to frequent and before long I was getting 3 bet and with crap 4betting light didn't appeal.

Anyway ,thanks to everyone who has offered advice , theres still a lot of work for me to do on my game (and I must listen to myself more when I make a call expecting to be beaten , more dollars go out to better hands than come in from catching bluffs at this level)
  38. #113
Nice post Keith. Think I need to do some of the analysis that you did after your big downswing. Keep doing what you're doing.
  39. #114
couple of shitty days play..... Sunday I was up $25 before sprewing off 20$ to end up $5 at $575. SImilar story last night , shortish session but QQ<AA and AK <TT all in pre accounted for 2 stacks, and card deadness meant break even over the rest for a net loss of $19 to leave the roll on .
Currently averaging 50 vpps per day so hopefully will retain silver star this month and therefore keep it for august and september. Definately seem to be earning them a lot faster under the new 5x scheme as last month came nowhere near earning enough to have silver star under 'normal' circumstances. I have moved up to 4 tables though so thats having an effect as well.
Definately going to concentrate on my play though. One table last night I was only cbetting 10% . That is way too exploitable but I think partkly affected by having maniacs on the table.
  40. #115
I think our accounts are hooked up to the same doomswitch, yo. I had this month's first negative session last night also. Gogo, 25NL wants you.
  41. #116
booked a 4$ profit after aboiut 1200 hands last night. Was down about 15$ at one stage then one table went apeshit . Was sat to the immediate left of a 98/69/7 over about 90 hands . He was betting and raising every street. JUst called him down several times with flush draws which hit on the river and stacked him twice but it was bloody expensive to get to show down with him and several times TPTK was no good against some random trash that two paired on the river.

edit: scrap this ...seems they just aren't callingthem newvpp anymore

On another side note ......WTF is happening with the new fpp tables. THe past few nights it seemed that they were all the new sort.....last night there were very few and its only towards the end of the night that i realised that there were a few new 5x tables but most were back to the old sort. Can't help wondering if stars have seen tha t they are going to be hammered at 5 and 10 nl by peole clearing bonuses when before earing vpps was hard.
  42. #117
That's what I thought, but are you sure? I've still got the odd one or two that are called New VPP...
  43. #118

wtf at the first hand on this page
don't have a problem with the hand, but I have a problem with bluffing TPTK
  44. #119
I thought I was up against a worse kicker or flush I think and throw in being on a heater and it turned into some lousy river play. followed this up later in the op weith spewing plenty on 'flush' boards .
  45. #120
oops ....nearly had to rescue this op from page 2.
Had a couple of swingy days at the end of last week , up 35$ one day and lost 34$ the next. Then I had a couple of days at the seaside with wife and lad. Took lappy with holdem manager on it planning to study how some of my oponents play in the evenings.
That idea didn't exactly go down to well with wife/in laws so in the end just vegged watching telly one night (snow baths in the antartic don't sound fun) watched a film next night and played links ls against my wife on the lappy the third night so in effect 3 poker free days.
Came back earlier than rest of family to get back to work.....(downside of self employed) and Erpel called in last night and we discussed poker. Straightened out some of my thinking and did some analysis on some of my opponents and played around with filters on my own database.

ok so its been a weird week. Was drifting downwards on he bankroll . Night before last started at $553 was hitting hands left right and center and was sitting at $615 at one stage before finishing at 595$.
Then last night none of my hands seemed to stand up and shut the tables down early after dropping 4 Buy In s so roll is back at 553$. 800 vpps for the month so far though so hopefull on course for retaining silver star this month.

Take all this with a grain of salt, I am a self proclaimed noob and my thoughts is simply what I would do and by no means does it mean that it's right. :P

1: You say this guy was stealing tons, but was he positionally aware? Because UTG+1 raise is usually a pretty easy call with JJ with most villains for me. With a read that he's super aggro pre-flop I might re-raise but I'm definitely folding to his 4bet. You're pretty much playing for set value and you don't have the odds for that call.

2: I'm folding the flop. I don't mind the first call so much, TP2K + gutshot is good enough imo but after the re-raise you gotta know you're beat. It's multiway, there's an OOP raise and your call. This guy's re-raise is indication of something big (unless you have some sort of very specific read). I can't see him having anything you can beat, so your TP2K is useless and a gutshot isn't worth calling anymore. You're getting 1/3 odds or so on the 3bet call with your gutshot which is decent with implied odds but there's Qs all over your opponent's ranges. Then turn it's a snapfold.

3: Yeah I fold pre as well. This is a good one for ranges, imo. Not sure what villain's VPIP is here but he called your UTG raise, then re-raised a super dry flop. Lets see... if he's our average Joe, his ranges might look something like this:
    Pre: 22-JJ, AK-AJ, KQ
Flop: AQ, JJ-88, 44 - your equity is around 53% vs this range. Depending on how aggressive he is you could still leave KQ, in there, but it doesn't change your equity much.
Turn: AQ, TT, 88, 44 - Again, depending on aggression, JJ could still be in his range. Without it, you're down to under 30% equity. With JJ in his range you are around 45% equity. I think this is a clear fold at this point.

Well, those are my thoughts, feel free to critisize them, since I learn tons from giving feedback as well.

Keep it going man, remember it's all about playing with a clear mind, your A-game 100% - if you don't feel you're playing 100% then drop it, go play some donkaments if you really want to play poker or something. Don't try to force the wins, it only does the exact opposite.

Hey maybe we can set up a sweat session sometime, it could help the both of us. Let me know if you're interested. GL, keep your chin up. Kick ass.

Heh, first and second hands are the same one, I assume a copy paste error. I was all like, wow, these hands are so similar and against the same player, what are the odds?! :P

    1. Anyways, first/second hand is fucked up, I think river is b/f and I might even check the turn. Nasty though, when the fish run goot, they run goot. Oh and also, KTo on the SB I'd either raise to isolate the whale or fold. But I'm really tight from the SB so it may be fine.

    2. Second one is a good fold I think, I would have c/f or c/c a small bet on the turn and try to hit the straight. I don't think leading turn gets you anywhere since you would really only be getting folds from hands you have beat.

    sweat = teamviewer/skype combo?

let me know if advice from a 6-max relative fish might come in handy - now that i've decided that i don't play without my a-game i have all this time when i can't play normal stakes - so sweat sessions, vids, study, mtt/sng micro-abuse, plo, etc have more place!

In that hand where you hold TT on Jh3c8h9h I would probably be checking the turn.
  57. #132
Sweat session last night with Rob (Kolonel) and Gobbatino went well.Alltogether during the actual session I probably finished up about 6$ . Carried on playing afterwards and got rivered set over set on one hand but ran well the rest, finally hit some other sets and finished up .
1 table I had a complete pig of a player . 78/29 8.6 post flop aggression , 19% 3bet pre. Basically , you had to hit your hand else you would be all in with air, and play at the table was specifically skewed to combat this player. It didn't help that he kept showing up with a hand but one of the hands he didnt bet hard I looked him up with just to find out what he wasn't playing hard.
This was one hand that gave us trouble. I had gone to limp calling hands that had big hand potential pre but generally was playing extremely tight ....13/9 which is unheard of for me. $0.05/$0.1 No Limit Holdem

Again we had a mini debate on whether to bet or check the turn. It was very unusual for him to check the turn and seeing what he had I think we made the right choice in checking it back. It gave him a chance to catch up and make a hand and once he had any piece of the board and our 'weakness' on the river he had been happy to get it in against other players.

All in all , I think it was a pretty solid session, and Gobbatino was surrised I think by how easy it is to get laggy stats without playing total crap by stealing relentlessy against the right people and not continuing with the trashj hands when people play back. I'm happier than I was yesterday and the bankroll is giving a mini psychological boost for being back over the $500 mark at $508.
Vpp is going to be a close run thing but i'm fairly sure that i should be able to retain silver star. Last nights long session helped, and I now need 212 vpps in 5.5 sessions allowing for the reverse sweat with gobbatino so its looking like i need an average of about 40 per day and the days i've actually played this month I've averaged 45 vpps per day.

Hand 1 - 3-bet flop. As played check-shove turn. Out of position you're shoving any river - and maniacs are more likely to fold to aggression on the river than any other street. Get it in on the turn and he's calling middle pair.

Hand 2 - See how differently life plays in position. You get to control the hand. I prefer raising the flop, as played turn check behind is fine as is river shove.

Hand 3 - Pre-flop good. Raise flop cos you're ahead here most of the time and hate overcards. Turn call as played, you have middle pair and showdown value so you want him checking the river - ten outs (if you're lucky) against a call doesn't make for a good shove. What's his calling range? Does the shove still make sense?

I've got this big thing about a-game at the moment. What are the chances of you having the focus to be playing to the best of your ability after a session AND an hour or two of constant poker focus during a sweat session?

tilt = any deviation from a-game. So chances are that the session was tilty, but won't be recognised as such..

I think a big factor in my swinginess is that i have been hitting that damm call button when I get raised on the turn or river. Its great when they are bluffing and the graph shoots up when they have a hand though I'm usually calling because i have a hand , just not so good a hand. then the graph plummets.
Last night I tried to exercise some self control , folding top pairs to reraises . Results were less swingy but i'm not sure if opps were catching on that I could fold and were whacking in a big bluff on the end. Finished up 10$ . could have been better but couold have hbeen a lot worse. I'll post up some of the folds later see whether people think that i was just being tooo nitty .

I do this a lot as well.

I mark someone as being capable of attacking weakness and stealing. Then I put money in, then check and give him an opportunity to steal - and then I see myself making hero calls.

I've seen a few observations that relate and that I need to remember more when I play:
    1) Some people are perfectly happy to bluff a huge range when first in one any street - but will never never bluff raise.
    2) Some people are perfectly happy to bluff when the pot is small/medium sized but will never never bluff into a big pot

When I don't have a solid read but a few stats to go buy and I try to determine whether an opponent is likely to be bluffing this river I check his overall aggression in relation to his street by street aggression - if his aggression increases street by street he's more likely bluffing on later streets. If his vpip is huge but his aggression is modest that can still be a big range with bluffs in it. If his won at showdown is very low he might bluff rivers a lot. If his river bet % is high he is likely to bluff rivers a lot.

But yeah, often enough when I make that call I don't have a clear idea if I'm +EV and typically that makes it a losing play.

    ok the folds....

villain was a 32/17/2.1 agg and was somewhat of a station . Whenever I raised he always seemed to call. Flop bet seems small but I was trying to control the pot somewhat with top pair crap kicker.Turn bet he needs an Ace to continue.. dam hes called ....WTF am I doing with that river bet? It screams weakness and all it is going to be any good against is air ?

hand 2 : Ok flop top pair with a good kicker, broadways , Ax and flushes are likely to continue. On the turn the flush draws have now come in and having paid too many off I didn't want to put any more in to this pot. He checks behind ....was he thinking I might check raise? River bricks ...I check and he bets .... Is he doing this with a weaker Ace? possibly with a set and flush.

Turn brings possible flush draws but doesn't really improve villains hand . so WTF with his raise? flopped straight? 76s gutshot and straight draws again , sets...AQ? ......calling this was likely to result in an all in situation on river without really being able to improve my hand.

Hand 1: I may call a small bet on the river but definitely not betting into him.

Hand 2-3: I play them the same but this may be one of my leaks. Like I was telling you, I feel like sometimes I'm too weak and let people bet me off my decent hands. I would like to see what some of the better players have to see about these because they could literally be hands I played.

TT - Flop is a clear raise vs. almost every villain

    AJ - You said it

    33 - cbet flop plz

A3s - "I thought I might be ahead but I had outs to improve" is not a reason to bet (or are you talking about after he shoves?). Is he calling your turn bet with worse? If not turn is a check behind.

QQ - Fine, although I may bet slightly less on the river

    QQ - yep

K4s - wtf are you doing preflop? Why are you donking this flop? Turn call is fine with 15 outs it seems close but I think you need to win ~$2 on the river every time you hit for call to be profitable.

    thanks for the feedback Badgers.
TT - Flop is a clear raise vs. almost every villain
I actually answered these out of order so some of the response to the 33 hand applies here too.FPS kicked in here i think, and wanted him to put more mony in before i raised it up.In reality there were flush draws, broadways had gutshots, and J9 had open enders. Raising would at least have given me some fold equity.
    AJ - You said it
what am i beating on the flop thats raising me??? AK AQ A5 A4 have me beaten , A2 A3 have gutshots A6-A10 i beat,I should have folded to the flop raise.

    33 - cbet flop plz
I think this comes about from Jym's grinder school video which I might have misinterpreted over time since I watched it .I was set or forget sort of mode once the raise was called. If I'd cbet would he have raised as he did which would then be an easy fold . If he called then I think the hand is going to play out the same way.I think that when I wrote this it was right at the start of my downswing
I think that this has been a major cause of my problems . i'd cut back on my cbetting on my upswing and was hitting hands that stood up. This gave me the impression that I should be cbetting less in reality its turned me into quite a passive player postflop.I'm just not cbetting enough and its resulting in me check calling a lot. When I do raise on the flop people are just getting out of the way a lot of the time or I' m getting reraised.
A3s - "I thought I might be ahead but I had outs to improve" is not a reason to bet (or are you talking about after he shoves?). Is he calling your turn bet with worse? If not turn is a check behind.
I meant after he shoves.Whilst reading your comment , i got to "after he shoves" and went back to look at the hand and thought I should have checked behind there, try and hit the flush ,otherwise try to see a cheap showndown .Then read the rest of your comment.
QQ - Fine, although I may bet slightly less on the river

    QQ - yep

K4s - wtf are you doing preflop? Why are you donking this flop? Turn call is fine with 15 outs it seems close but I think you need to win ~$2 on the river every time you hit for call to be profitable
No idea how I called that Pre and calling it turned into spew.

    last nights session.

nearly broke down through the $400 level but I think last nights session kicked a few things back into my brain. Tried to play a lot tighter at the start and to steal a bit less but that didnt work out to well.
In the middle of the session things seemed to click, was cbetting my pre raises a lot more and had some hands and generally felt happy with the way the rising part of the graph went. Upped my 3 betting and One table had a guy on my left who was constantly3betting my button raises. 4bet him with JJ and stacked him and that quietened him down a lot. Couple of coolers at the end with villains hitting rivers but I think I've turned things around a bit . Identified some areas that I need to work on .
Roll is now at 429$ and need another 32 VPPs to retain silver. Should do it but an early morning start tomorrow so won't get so many hands in tonight. Won't be playing anything like the number of hands next month because I'll be busy at work .
  70. #145

    Hi keith/guys... i'm back... i think!
  71. #146
hey Andy ,,,,,,good to see you back , as you can see its been a roller coaster for me this month but you'll love the rate that you get vpps on the new 6 max scheme.

woooo looks like i got momentum in the correct direction. 754 hands for a profit of $51.40. I got cards but I also felt that I played well ....laid down some top pair hands , folded some AK multiway hands that missed flop and would have missed by the river in a big pot. did fairly well at getting an extra bet out of someone.

I also passed through 1200 Vpps tonight so feel pleased that I actually managed to achieve a 'proper' silver star as opposed to the previous uk special one especially 3 or 4 tabling 10NL. Managed to do it in just over 23k hands.and its also my most hands in a month so far.

    heres the session graph.

this includes some of last nights as well , so its just the last 750 hands .

since early morning start loading lorry then nowt to do , fired up the tables and did an hour and a half session. 400 hands for $20 profit and the bankroll back over 500 at $500.88.
It seems weird to me that i have big downswings , play through them whilst trying to work out what i'm doing wrong and then kick into a massive heater to recover and hopefully move on up to a higher baseline on the bankroll and then churn.
I definately feel that i was playing way to passively on my last downswing and that allowed villains to catch their cards on turn and river cheaply to draw out on me , coupled with some bad luck and coupled with some incredibly bad play on som individual hands. The upside is that I have now learnt how to make money by folding (hopefully) .
this hand just screamed over pair or set to me , or was it too nitty to fold

hey Keith, damn your swings. They're as high as they are low and vice versa! Me, i never ever ever get 10nl heaters... but then the same goes for extended coolers. I do get periods of only winning tiny amounts, that's my poker karma.

Say, could you be a doll and pm me some details about that 6max points thingy you mentioned?

did you do the UK and Ireland freeroll? i did, just finished about 3500th out of 10.4k people to win $8. Are are MTT that good? paying first 60% of players?
