    Default Operation One Million dollars!!!!

This thread started as Operation 75k. It has since progressed to bigger and better things.

My new Dell and dual Samsung 20" SyncMasters arrived today and since I seem to have convieniently found myself with 3 and a bit months summer hollidays and no "real job" I guess I should set myself a bit of a challenge.

The plan is to try and make $75,000 between the time I finished my exams a week and a half ago and the time I have to go back to college in October. So far since I finished I've played almost 29,000 hands of 200 and 400NL 6max and I'm up $9700. Hopefully I can keep this up.

I can't remember the stuff that happened in the last couple of days so I'm just going to call this day 9 and go from here. Wish me luck please!!

My BR just after I finished my exams was about $9000 I think. So I have to get to $84,000. Here we go...

    Day 9

Spent like the whole day getting the new PC set up so didn't get to play much poker. 6 tabled 400NL for about 2500 hands and I'm up $2600 so it wasn't a complete waste. Feeling incredible relief after my $3000 downswing yesterday and the day before. Thought that one was never going to end.

    Bankroll is now ~$18300.

Here's a hand that scared the bollox out of me earlier. I'm not used to doing this type of thing since I just moved over from playing really passive FR.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

    saw flop|saw showdown

    Hero ($494.10)
    MP ($557)
    Button ($434.20)
    SB ($415)
    BB ($236.10)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with J, A. SB posts a blind of $2.
Hero raises to $16, 2 folds, SB (poster) raises to $51, 1 fold, Hero raises to $150, SB calls $97.

    Flop: ($304) 7, 2, 7 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero is All-in (~$350), SB folds.

    Final Pot: ~$660

    That one felt good.

    Day 10

Played nearly 4000 hands of 400NL today for a whopping grand total profit of $87. On the plus side though I found out that I'm able to 8 table 6max, pity it was for no money. Breaking even sux.

I'm going to a party in about an hour to get drunk for approximatly the whole weekend so I prolly won't get to play much tomorrow. I'll see if I can fit a few hours in between hangovers.

    Br is now: $18420

I know everything is relative to the stakes you play at, but from a $25NL guy's perspective I found this statement funny and it made me sad at the same time.

Sigh, maybe some day I'll be in that boat and can despair over only making $2,600 in a days work. Lol.
  10. #10
lol, when I said that I ment it to be pretty tongue in cheek. A $2600 payday is a big thing to me too make no mistake. I just try to never get excited about things like that because basically I would panic and withdraw the whole lot. Keep in mind that I spent days 7 and 8 losing $3000, I'm still -400 for that 3 day period.

    Day 12

So pissed at myself right now, sat down a few seconds ago with a huge hangover, still wearing the clothes I wore out last night and slept on a floor in, in some house where there was a party and donked off almost $400 in 21 hands. I'll put in a good session tomorrow, now I'm going for a shower and a pint of ice cold milk.

edit: busted 900th in the Sunday Million. -$215

    Br stands at $17846.

    Day 13

Holy shit I just lost 2k in under an hour. I'm going away to die right now, see you in a while.

Ended off the day down nearly $3000. I feel like shit. I also am having serious doubts about my ability to play 400NL profitably. I'm now down to 1.5ptBB/100 after 23,000 hands and I just feel like I'm getting outplayed more often then I outplay others. I'll sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.

Downswings suck bro, but try not to get down on yourself. A really good friend of mine who plays 5/10 and 10/20 on Party and is very successful (may be one of the biggest 2/4 winners ever) has had far bigger downswings in much shorter periods of time than that. Poker is very brutal and many underestimate the short term luck factor involved. I suggest that you take a break for a little while and come back refreshed.

The other day I'm positive it was you who I stacked at 200nl. The hand went down like this, you raise on the button, I reraise with AKs, you call. Flop K44 two clubs, I bet you call. Turn 7, I check you push, I call. You have 97c and miss the river. Actually that hand is in the video I posted in the SHNL forum, about at the 24:00 minute mark. Just thought I'd bring this up for no reason. Anyways, best of luck to you my friend, I hope things turn around for you. I'm currently on an upswing that came right after a downswing that came after an upswing. It never ends.

once you get to 400nl the variance starts getting sick. you have a deep BR for it so dont let it phase you

    Day 14 and 15

Thanks for the comments guys. I was just pissed because I knew that alot of the losses were due to downright bad play and not just variance.

Came back today and went on an absolute bender of a poker marathon. Racked up almost 7000 hands of 400NL for a profit of about 1.2k. I was dealt lots of beats all day though which ate up alot of my profit, I don't mind losing to beats in the slightest though. Still made some silly mistakes, theres lots of things I need to work on.

So an average working day (incl. commute, let's say) for $1.2k (works out at 2.15PTBB/100) - I could live with that. Gg.

Ya thats the way I look at it too. Everyone else works 8 hour days why shouldn't I.
  21. #21
    Day 16

K, I made a pretty big decision today and decided to withdraw $10,000 from my account and move back down to 200NL. I just felt like I was getting killed at 400NL and it wasn't just variance, I was getting outplayed plain and simple. When I play 200NL I just feel way more confident and the whole thing is much easier. I needed to withdraw that cash at some stage anyway because it's to pay for college next year and I figure that if I'm moving back down then I don't need a 16k bank roll.

So, at the moment my br is $6000. The plan is to 200NL it back up to $12,000 and then take another shot at 400NL and beyond. It shouldn't take me too long to get back there I don't think, especially if I keep playing as many hands as I have been.

Sounds sensible and well thought out. Whatever happens, thats $10k for real life you wouldn't have had otherwise. Also, convert them dollars quick, they're going to do a Weimar Germany over the next 12 months
  23. #23
    Day 16 cont..

Dropped 1k at 200NL. This is easily the worst downswing of my life, I'm down around $6000 over the last two weeks, still can't figure out if its just variance or if I'm just shit at 6max in general.

    I shall press forward.

    Br: $5017.5
  24. #24
This is a mixture of 400 and 200NL.

  25. #25
That looks like my graph as of late also... I'm sure in your next 50k hands it will rise again.
  26. #26
Plawed a couple of k hands. Made like $940. Made some donk moves that I'm not happyish with but hey, I can iron that shit out.

    Br = $5960

As a side note: variance in SH is sick, I played 3 sessions today, br went:

    $5020 - 5750
    5750 - 5190
    5190 - 5960

    ba d for my <3

    Day 18

Ran like well oiled machinery today for the first time in about 2 weeks. It's such a relief after the shit I went through the last while. Hopefull its over now.

Put a couple of hours in and managed to crush (if I do say so myself) some 200NL tables for almost $2000 worth of profit.

Nice job man, good to see you running well for once. How many hands did you play today when you won 10 buyins? Curious to how long that took you.

I 6 tabled for about 3800 hands or something like that. Suppose it was 7 hours of play altogether.

    Day 19

Woke up at 5pm with the worst handover I have ever experienced in my whole life. Pretty much sat around all day thinking that I was going to die. Played ne poker though.

    Day 20

Started playing poker at 2am for some reason, played just over 4000 hands for a total profit of $625. It's pretty slow I know but at least it's still upwards.

    Br: 8502

Oh also I got my college exam results back today. Got like a 50-60% average overall which is nothing special but I'm absolutely delighted bacause I did barely any study. Literally 4 out of my 11 exams I started studing the night before the exam. Damn poker!

    hehehe

Quit what? Job or poker? 35k a yr woild be pennies to you if you continue at poker the way you are going. I know I certainly feel that 100k/yr would be easy for me. With some smart investing this could go a long way. I really don't understand why all the winning players on this site are so mad to get jobs.

Depending on what you do for a living a job can give you a lot things poker cant. But I think it depends a lot on what kind of person you are and what you do for a living.

    Day 22

Played nearly 5k hands today and I'm down $300. It was a tough day, felt like I had lots of tough decisions. On the upside I 9 tabled for the first time ever. Found it ok, I think from now on 8 tabling is going to be my standard ammount of tables as long as I'm not tired or whatever. Also nearly 1.5k$ of rakeback came through today.

Probably won't be playing tomorrow because I'm going to a weekend long music festival like woodstock for the whole weekend after a BBQ and friendly game of poker in a friends house tomorrow. Should be amazing.

    600NL, 3ptBB/100, 8 tables = 250$/hr = 135 GBP/hr

    6 hours a day, = £810/day
    5 days a week = 4000/week
    48 weeks/year = £192,000 /yr. = $360,000 /yr

Do oyu not think if you really dedicated yourself to poker for one year you cold reach this stage?

I certainly couldn't More scary is the fact that your only chance of a career is if you keep playing poker - you're in trouble if you want to go back to work after a year, or 5 years, or whatever. And the worst thing about poker being your career is the fact you have to hang out with other poker players. Ugh.

OK I changed my mind Poker sucks. I lost $450 in literally 20 minutes of 200NL just there hahhahah!!!

But you know what!? I doesn't matter in the slightest because I'm going off to get drunk for the whole weekend! No exageration, I'm actually going to be drunk from about 3 hours away untill monday morning! YAY for life!

This whole business of employers wondering about gaps in my CV really pisses me off. I just spent the last 17 years of my life working like a bitch in school and university trying my very hardest and pushing myself to the limit mentally so that I can come away with an honerary Bachelors degree next year. Apparantly this degree entitles me to work as an Engineer and says that I am perfectly capable of doing so. Now, after all this work and study stress, as far as I'm concerned, if I wan't to spend 2 years of my life picking my nose, scratching my ass and playing poker then I will do so. If a future employer wants to know what I did for those two years thenfuck him, it's none of his business what I did. If he doesn't like it he can shove his job up his you know what. As far as I'm concerned it'll be his loss because he won't get the of having me in his employment.

As you can see I feel quite strongly on the matter.

    Day 29

K I'm back and just about recivered from one of the best weekends ever. Had a great time but now it's time for some poker.

I played some hands yesterday but I'll just roll them into today because there wasn't many of them and I lost alot so I'm psychalogically trying to ignore them!

Today I played 5750 hands and made $820.
EDIT: I forgot to put in that I lost $900 playing 400NL so I'm pretty much just breakeven.

More importantly I've come to a realisation about my pokar playing over the last 3 weeks. I've realised that I'm playing like a stupid robot. It's like I wake up ever morning and try to cram as many hands into the day as I can without ever thinking for more then 1 sec about any of them. I've been playing shit in other words and my results show this. From now on I have 2 rules while playing:

    1) Every time I put money into a pot I will think of a reason in my head why I am doing so and why I feel this is the best course of action to take.
    2) By the showdown of every hand I will have formulated some sort of guess as to what hands the opponent is likely to have. Doesn't matter if I'm wrong as long as I tried.

I swear I will stick by this and hopefully my results will improve. I'm really getting sick of 200NL.

    Day 30

Played 3 sessions todat totalling 4300 hands all together. After a bad start things turned around for me and I catually made some cash. Ended off up about $650 for the day.

Also I played what I rekon to be the best hand of my poker career today against this LAG guy.
Deepstack big decision whick worked out right:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (4 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

    saw flop|saw showdown

    Button ($317.69)
    Hero ($427.02)
    BB ($275.05)
    UTG ($85.10)

Preflop: Hero is SB with J, A. Hero posts a blind of $1.
1 fold, Button raises to $8, Hero (poster) raises to $29, 1 fold, Button calls $22.

    Flop: ($62) J, J, Q (2 players)
Hero bets $40, Button calls $40.

    Turn: ($142) Q (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $103.4, Hero calls $103.40.

    River: ($348.80) K (2 players)
    Hero checks, Hero calls $144.29.

    Final Pot: $493.09

Also I've been learning the value of paying attention to the tables a bit as part of my aggreement with myself yesterday. A couple of hours before I put a little note on this guy saying " lead out bluffs". This note let me do this with confidence:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (6 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

    saw flop|saw showdown

    BB ($509.05)
    UTG ($204.75)
    MP ($66)
    Hero ($311.60)
    Button ($211.80)
    SB ($124.80)

Preflop: Hero is CO with J, T. SB posts a blind of $1.
2 folds, Hero raises to $8, 1 fold, SB (poster) calls $7, 1 fold.

    Flop: ($18) 3, 6, 7 (2 players)
SB bets $15, Hero raises to $55, SB folds.

All in all a good day. Hopefully tomorrow will be the same.

have you been loosening up lately? It seems like maybe you are out making some moves now - more so than that 15% VPIP i see in the 50k hand checkup -

Also, I think that those 2 thoughts are an Excellent way to improve - You see a ton of hands every day and just slowing down that second or two is totally worth it - you don't mind if i borrow that do you?

Ya I'm loosening up a bit, not limping thought, I just don't like limping. I'm basicall just increacing my blind stealing attempts and this is pushing up my PFR. I think it's just against my personality to be really loose.

    Day 31

Onother ok day today. Went out drinking last night and I can't remember if I went asleep or not last night, I've been wrecked all day anyway so I only managed 2.5k hands. Ended off up around $800.

Br is getting close to $10,000 again now. I'm trying to decide wheather I should move back to 400NL at $10k or if I need $12k. Any suggestions?

    Day 32

BOOM!!! Moved back up to 400NL with a 10k bankroll and wrecked the gaff for about 1000 hands for a tidy profit of 2 grand. It's good to be back baby.

Also played about 3.5k hands of 200NL earlier on and only made a buy-in. Though I was moaning at the time, in hindsight I'm glad I saved my upswing till I got to the 400NL tables. Hopefully I can keep this up all the way to 5000NL in like a week. See you there.

    BR: $12058

I'm going to a party, ttyl.

    Day 33 and 34

Yesterday was a bit crap. I lost back 1.5k of the 2k I made the day before. I still felt pretty good about the whole thing because I could feel that I was playing well and it was obviously variance I was experiencing. So I plugged on for a couple of hours and decided to call it a night after losing 1.6k$.

Today stuck a smile back on my face though. This morning was tough, I played about 2k breakeven hands which felt like I was taking a step backwards for every step forwards. I'm glad I stayed at it though because I after another 2k hands I finished up with just over $2600 profit for the day. Bankroll just crossed the 13k mark again for the first time since my big withdrawal. Hopefully tomorrw will be just as good a day.

    5k hands, breakeven. BORING!!!!

    Day 36

Br is not scraping on the door of the 14k mark. Made about $900 today. Swinging all around the place at the moment. I was down $2000 at one point this morning bafore pulling it back for a 1k profit. 6max variance is sick at the higher levels.

But it don't matter because I PWN 400NL!!:

5.1k hands between the two days. Ended up down a buyin. I'm starting to think I've been a little bit to gambly the last while. I think I'll subconsiously try and tighten up a little bit post flop for the next while.

Also last nght I had my first live poker (cash game) experience. Blew through 2 €200NL buy-ins in like 2 hours and wen't home. My little brother made a holy show of me and walked away with €50 more then the 100 he came with even though he doesn't play poker. Needless to dsay all my friends have been laughing at me all day. What fun.

    gg poker.

Why no updates? Have you given up?

I need an update... you are fuelling my aspirations to be a good poker player.

Heh sorry, it gets a bit monotonous continuously updating this thing. Thanks for showing an interest though, I wasn't sure if anyone actually read this thing!

Well quite a bit has changed since my last post I guess.

Firstly I took a week off pretty much because my parents went away for a week and basically I wen't nuts for a week. Lots of drinking and going out and not much room for poker.

Next thing I come back and the Party poker Monster promotion lands one squarely on my jaw. Basically if I look at my poker tracker it says I'm a 1.4ptBB/100 winner at 400NL over 71k hands. If I factor in what the Monster will take from me from now on, all of a sudden I am pretty much a breakeven player. So something needs to give. Either I need to become a drastically better player (which I'm working on) or I need to move. Problem with moving is that I can't find anywhere that meets my playing requirements. So it looks like I'm stuck with Party and struggling to be a better player.

With regards to poker I've been swinging all over the place. This week I started off losing 10 buy-ins between 5000 hands on Mon and Tueesday morning, then I pulled an allnighter on Tue night and managed to claw back $3000 of the $4200 that I had lost. Of course on wednesday I proceeded to lose back 3 or 4 of those buy-ins to the masses. Hopefully things will settle a bit soon but something tells me I'm in for a rough ride.

Plan at the moment is, I'm taking today off then I'm going hardcore all the way to the end of the month in a desperate effort to get to 600NL on an $18k bankroll.

Yup 6max all the way. Variance gets crazy when you get past 200NL because the players are so much more aggressive, often you have to put your stack on the line with a weak hand because you believe someone is just aggressivly playing at you with nothing. Of course it's expensive when you're wrong.

lol true. That was fun actually, and plus I made like $300.

I've noticed that you seem to make preflop raises that, from my 25NL point of view, seem quite insane. 8bb with K8? A7s?

Out of interest, what's the purpose of this? Ultra-maniac? Pissing your opponents off enough for them to play back at you with crap? Make every pot so big that they're on scared money?

I'm enjoying reading this blog, keep it up if you can... A couple more hh's wouldn't go amiss either.
  66. #66
Well taking the K8 hand above for example let me try and explain what I did and why.

Firstly, raising on the button here is standard for me. Basically I'm trying to steal the blinds. I'll cbet a flop if needs be and try and take it down. My main concern is taking the blinds and trying to keep my Preflop Raise % high so that it's not obvious what I have every time I raise.

Now, the guy in the big blind is a guy I play with a decent ammount and he's a good enough player. He has seen me raise on the button and cut-off alot over the last few orbits and he knows that I can't have really good hands every time I am raising because I simply couldn't get dealt that many good hands. So, he reraises me hoping that I will fold my not-so-good hand.

But, I know this guy too well. He has reraised me like this before. Perhaps too often. He does it often enough that I now he can't have AA/KK every time. So, I think one level above him and decide that I don't believe that he has AA/KK and I re-reraise him.

Now if you look at the situation he finds himself in, basically I am repping AA/KK and he has to fold everything that isn't AA/KK. He will probably even fold QQ here and I take the pot down with measley K8. But I'm not just manically reraising, there was a string of events which led me to do this.

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask and I'm more then glad to explain.

YAY I got to my second page. Soon I will rival Lukie's thread of random crap! This means war Lukie!
  74. #74
Today I 4 tabled 400NL for a while and made $100. It was interesting though because I was trying to play a way more aggressive style then I normally would. It seemed to work out well though and I got people to fold hands in spots where usually I would be the one giving up and folding. There's a thread in SHNL, go post in it please.

I just realised a second ago that I called this thread operation 75k! Ha, I'm not going to make it anywhere near 75k profit this sommer. At this stage if I make 30k I'll be happy. So far I'm +13k$ and going slow.

This is what you do sometimes when people lead into you:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (6 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

    BB ($509.05)
    UTG ($204.75)
    MP ($66)
    Hero ($311.60)
    Button ($211.80)
    SB ($124.80)

Preflop: Hero is CO with J, T. SB posts a blind of $1.
2 folds, Hero raises to $8, 1 fold, SB (poster) calls $7, 1 fold.

    Flop: ($18) 3, 6, 7 (2 players)
SB bets $8, Hero raises to $28, SB folds.

    Final Pot: $54

Also you make anote of this tendancy immediatly.
