Operation: Get out of 200nl
The intro to this is long, so if you want to just skip to my goals/objectives, I've bolded those at the end.
My Poker Story:
I started randomly playing $5 SNGs with my friends my Junior year of High School after watching some WSOP. None of us had any idea what we were doing, I dont even know if we had raising blinds, fuck, we may not have even had blinds. I did this casually for a bit and didnt really think much of it beyond some fun every other week or so.
Towards the end of Senior year I began looking for a way to make some extra money so that I didnt need a summer job. I stumbled upon some cheesy ebooks about winning money at online poker and I decided that was what I should do. I started out as a complete fish and would play NL SNGs and LHE cash games. Did that for a little bit before finding FTR and "getting serious." I stuck with SNGs and followed strict BR management, but didnt really go anywhere with it. I switched to NLHE HUSNGS and did better, but still didnt make much at all.
After growing tired of that, I read about bonus whoring and finally made the switch to cash games. I bonus and casino whored all summer and made a good amount of money, but really only did slightly better than breakeven at 50nl. I tried to improve, but didnt do a great job of applying what I learned and just treaded water for the most part.
Towards the end of summer I switched from FR to 6max and really tried to work on my game. I made it up to 100nl and stayed there for a bit, again breaking even. The last week or so of summer I ran sick hot and moved to 200nl where I continued to run hot. However, with my first year of school starting, I didnt have much time to play. Not because of studying, but partying. Anyways, I had a good September, but in October reality hit.
UIGEA passed around this time and the games started to get tougher and I just wasnt that good, combine that with "running bad" and I dropped about $3k in October which absolutely devasted me mentally [still had a decent BR though]. I didnt play a ton in Nov/Dec, but made some money. January was when I really started to get serious.
I read a lot more and started posting more, and really felt as though my game improved a lot. I booked a decent win in January, but February was when things really took off. I ran hot again and moved up to 400nl where it continued. I booked my first 5 digit month and was on top of the world.
March came and I broke even in the beginning of the month and then, right before heading to visit my ex at Bowdoin followed by a weekend trip to boston, I dropped 3k in 1 day. I took the rest of the month off and just had a good time like you should in college.
Came back in April and ended my 50k breakeven stretch and booked a small win for the month. In May I went back to studying my game a lot and the results showed, I was a consistent winner at 400nl at UB and had another good month. At the end of May I celebrated my 19th birthday and then went to Ireland with my family for a 10 day golfing trip and when I got back I found all of my accounts hacked.
I was able to recover most of my money, but still lost somewhere in the ballpark of $5,000. What made it worse was that as soon as I returned I was set to move into my new apartment, so I had spent a lot furnishing that and also bought my Dad's car when he got a new one. Basically, this all _really_ set me back and I just ended up taking all of June off.
In July i was mentally ready to play, but when I started back at 200nl I got absolutely rocked and ran like hell. I dropped down to 100nl where, between July and August I put in 50k hands at >5ptbb/100 and then in mid august moved back to 200nl and did well there. Took a few shots at 400nl in September, but dropped a few k over a pretty small sample [had ~30% w$SD]. Since then I have just been grinding 200nl and done alright there [winrate of ~3ptbb/100 over 100k+ hands].
Anyways, I feel like my game is very solid and can win at 400nl, but not for a huge amount. My biggest leak is lack of mathematical understanding of the game and I also really need to work on getting hands in. Im tired of just grinding out decent months and simply staying at 200nl, so that brings me to this operation.
Goals:
-50,000 Hands this month
--Will be slightly tough to reach because I was in Denver on a conference until late last night, but Im going to stick to it
-Make 400nl my main game again
-Drastically improve my mathematical understanding of the game
-Make 5-10 posts a day in SHNL
Structure of Operation:
-Daily updates:
--Top 3 winners
--Top 3 losers
--Any questionable hands
--Totals [hands/profit for the day and for the operation]
-Weekly Stats update
Basically, I want this to force me to be accountable for my spew and to get me back involved with the community. If I dont post any hands one day, bitch at me about it, if I didnt post in many threads, send me some of yours that I can check out, etc. Im planning on putting in a decent session tonight, so hopefully I will have an update later. The operation is intended to last this month, assuming I stick to my goals. If it lasts longer, I dont want it to be because I didnt put in enough hands.
Wish me luck.
