By thin value I mean a smallish value bet on the river that gets looked up a lot. I checked back the river several times with the best hand before I realised I didn't have to.

Definitely harder to town yourself IP, but if you don't town yourself once in a while you're doing it wrong imo

Ok but this is a cycle then. If you mean small bet that will get called, then very soon they will realize that your small bets also aren't the flush/straight so they will start c/bombing you... and then what?

Soon your thin value bets will have to be the same size as your flush/straight bets.

It's not always a small bet, it's situational. I've also shoved my TPTK on the scary card IP and still been ahead when called. Depends on the villain. If you get c/bombed you aren't always folding. Think about the villain's line, put him on a range, evaluate your equity and make your decision right?

I don't get into these spots more than a couple of times a tourney anyway, but I think in general it's just good to be aware of your own image as you play - lines taken, hands shown down... Even at the micros people can adjust if you make the same move repeatedly.

Lol so I ran into a bigger two pair on the river last night and couldn't help but smile. Thanks for the warning griffey

I've taken AF off my HUD, it wasn't really decision-useful. Replaced it with ats and fts (total) and will see how it goes.

    Haha no worries!

What stats are you showing on your HUD?

I'm stats crazy on my HUD, if I show ppl my HUD ever they think I'm crazy. I like having all my stats right there, instead of looking for the hover-over stats.

    Apart from #hands I have:

    VPIP/PFR/3bet/total ATS/total FTS

That's it! Everything else is on hover, the hud almost gets in the way is it is - can't imagine it much bigger tbh although I welcome any suggestions for some more decision-useful tournament stats.

I really love MTTs but volume is a killer... even in a SnG you need your luck to hold in a couple of critical spots to TID, so with a MTT even with a huge edge you are only going to FT a small % of the time - which is a sod when you're playing ~10 MTTs a month.

    Let's say 6 critical all in hands as an average 60/40 favourite = 0.60^6 = 4.67%

So in a large MTT where you need 6 big holds to make the FT and your edge is huge (and 60/40 is bloody huge), you still won't make it 19 times out of 20. But that one bink tho...

Recently had someone review an entire MTT of mine, awesome . I can see my game improving as I play, just need to play more ldo.

Oh to be as young and carefree as you would love to meet up at some point though.

Getting my KK cracked in the hotter $4.40 was probably the most painful hand of last night but there were plenty to choose from, my deepest run was a mere 200/2000 for practically mincash. That's poker for you

I've registered for the $11 satty for the SM7A tomorrow, it will be my last big tourney for a while (possibly months) due to real life so I hope I bink, but we'll see...

Pokerstars crashed during the satty and blinds were 300/600 before it started working again. Everyone started shoving their 3bbs and I'm done. Not the final night I was hoping for, too tilted to play anything else though

I really like this thread Luco. The way you are writing about the variance, make me realize that if you want to be winning in tournaments you gotta put a lot of volume in it and keep sticking to your A game+ as much as you can, then you will have the best chances of being a successful MTT player.

I always had a passion for tournament poker, and my dream is to someday live by playing MTT. My problem is, i always find myself in that stupid spot that i do not know how to get started. I'v kept thinking between depositing 25$ or 50$(and then what would be the best way to grind up a roll), or starting from zero, 0$ and playing as many freerolls as possible each day i have time to play. By that i mean all the BankrollMob, Hubble's(and all other freerolls in the "freeroll" section) PSO freerolls and pretty much anything possible where i can earn a few bucks.

This might seem very boring but actually i think if you are a good poker player, then this would be a very funny and motivating challenge to prove yourself as a good poker player. Well, time will show what i will chose to do but i won't mind getting suggestions.

Thanks again for a nice and motivating thread Luco.
    With patience you win

I really think if you have expendable cash and $50 or $100 or whatever that amount is, isn't completely necessary then I would definitely invest something (assuming you have faith in your game) and save the time of needing to grind freerolls.

It's been 2 months since I started playing poker again. Had $16 in my stars account, built it up to $90 or so playing SnGs, lost most of that playing zoom and spin n go (spew n go amirite). BR currently about $26, putting myself on a zoom/spin ban for now.

Your goal should be to get your BR large enough that you can play microstake 5-card triple card when you're drunk without any longterm side-effects. All the better if you can scrounge up an IRC game with JustinSKS.

That's when you know you've made it.

Tried a few MTTs and busto'd early every time. At least I got it in good...

AA < 88 aipf, followed by kj < 44 aipf for the rest of my stack
KK < QQ aipf followed by A5 < kq aipf for the rest of my stack

there was also a KK <99 earlier today and an AA vs 44 that flopped a set. All pretty standard stuff but it's clear that the poker gods don't want me playing today so I'm packing it in early and firing up the playstation lol

So there was an aggressive 3bettor sat on my left last night. He was playing exploitatively against me b/c I was folding too much to 3bets, in hindsight I was too tight and too passive in the face of aggression.

    Planned adjustments:
    - I think next time I run into this situation I need to GII lighter and much sooner, for gameflow if nothing else. Not taking that shit.
    - resteal lighter as I'm not the only one at these stakes making this mistake
    - look at adding some expanded hover stats to my HUD as it's currently light (vpip/pfr/3bet%/ATS/FTS that's it)

    Planned study:
    - HoH 1 2 & 3 (again)
    - Kill Phil and Kill everyone
    - Play with push/fold, resteal/fold, short calling ranges and get a solid feel for them again, something I haven't done for a couple of years.
    - From this, explore profitable 3bet bluffing ranges based on tendencies.

    3bet bluffing range:
    - hands just outside our flatting range (e.g flat with 66, 3bet with 55)
    - Blocker hands (Ax / Kxs), especially if we expect them to 4bet/fold not call e.g. they're OOP
    - SCs too weak to call
    - Aim for 2:1 value combos to bluff combos

kk < A9s aipf and I'm done, 53/4900 sucks but feeling good about my play in general. Much better aggression, less calling, more raising, and some good reads / good folds too. Maybe wasn't restealing enough? will review tomorrow

One thing I noticed is there was a LAG player who was shoving very wide (30% overall) like crazy and he just kept on surviving - he'd get called and lose sometimes, but he just keep shoving and soon he'd be chipped up again, aggression got him through. I need to experiment with seeing how far you can push the aggro factor at these stakes.

    Off to bed

Played 9 tonight, broke even. My deepest run was 32nd, busted out KK < AQ aipf (27bb eff) almost identical to my exit from the hot $0.55 on tuesday. Ah well, my play wasn't terrible just happy to get some decent volume in really.

not my night. KK<55 2 hands in on one MTT, AK < A5 on another, card dead vs loose aggs on two others.

I'm still in on one table w/ 20bbs, will see how it goes. Lookin for anything to YOLO GII with, I'd take J9s right now

Edit: got J9o on the button as soon as I posted this, raised a limper pre, 9 high flop, scooped an ok pot to keep me alive

double edit: AT < A4 aipf and I'm stopping for the night. I just couldn't get out of first gear tonight, nothing went right although I got it in good every time so hey, there's that. Really don't feel like loading up any more though.

Going to try to have a week away from poker, it's true what they say that being an MTT player can be soul crushing. I remember reading chardrian's MTT blog from years ago and he was convinced that he was cursed by the poker gods at one point (fortunately his blog has a happy ending ), and something about my exit from the big $0.55 last night got to me more than it should. I've reviewed the HH and honestly I feel like I played it great, more than one hand I can be proud of including the hand I busted out on.

Need to find a way to separate my play from the results.

I like the AQ hand. It's only recently that I'd find myself making this flop call, in the past I'd have been too easy to run over. And the river bet is excellent, it would be easy to shove this considering the size of the pot, which gives him no raise button. I'm not even sure I can make this bet all that often rather than shoving river.

I sized the river slightly too big I think. About 13.5k is more likely to get calls /shoves from his range because it would give a better sense of fe if shoving and leave >10bb behind if calling.

But yeah ive been playing with bet sizing to get villains chips in and not just my own, with ^ some good results

I haven't really played them this time around, although this comment made me load up a couple today. They seem to be full of wannabe regs who

a/ play far too tight and then at around 5bb they
b/ get their chips in bad on some obvious steal

Yeah, no luck tonight. Lost a 75/25 in both of the first two I loaded up, just couldn't get off the ground in the other three. I still don't know how to play when I'm card dead at a loose table - I end up just picking a half decent hand and gamb00l in the end...

My luckbox is on the blink again, gonna give it a reboot. Or a kick. Or both.

Still, bad luck doesn't get to me nearly as much as bad play does. I got my aces cracked as a 90/10 tonight but I'm sat here dwelling on that value I lost by 3bet shoving AK IP for 30bb...

I thought for a while before shoving (as you should 40bb deep with a mid pair). I was expecting a combo draw like FD+ gutshot, maybe a weak queen, I mostly discounted sets because of the dumbass raise sizing, but in the end it was a stone cold bluff lol

I didn't bring my A game last night. I made a profit, but I could have gone much deeper. Some notes to myself:

    - Don't call a 3bet from a tight player with AQ
    - Just because a player sucks doesn't mean they don't have you beat
    - Be careful stacking off light multiway (eg tp / overpair)

Won't get much time for poker today.

Super card dead tonight, 100 hands with no pairs sucks and made it harder to let go when I finally got something. Ah well
