In any random month how much time do you spend working on your game as opposed to playing? Are you mostly just getting by on rakeback w/low winrates? If so I don't understand why you don't just drop a little volume for the sake of studying and jack your winrate up.

    Also yearly graphs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No idea about the imageshack thing, try tinypic unless there's any reason you need to use imageshack in particular. Also no idea about wtf bluetabling is lol.

But good luck with the year, enjoyed reading through your blog last year.

i'm surprised my new black card hasn't been fed-exed out yet. Looking forward to having two of them - the old and the new. Lame things that make me smile.

also. Poker. I've been mixing in more tourney play and it is sometimes resulting in long poker sessions - so far they've been the $3-$26 buyin range, mostly the $5.50/$11/$22 ones. The last week i didn't play many and broke even - had a 33/1060, a 24/526, and a 35/233. I'm putting myself in good spots and i like that. Winning tourneys seem to come down to playing well, getting deepish sometimes, and then continuing to play well + running good when you get there. I'm playing tourneys way better than ever in the past, i'm getting deepish sometimes, and i'm getting better at late-stage play. Now to run good and take one down!

oh, and cash games. Meh. Withdrew some more money. Playing erratically. Need to stick to a-game. Need to stop the old distracted/tired/hyped pre-flop range creep and post-flop ridiculousness. That's about it.

played the stars micro millions storm to remind me of the stars interface. Came about last.
only live in one tourney now
i'm really enjoying playing the occasional donkament alongside the cash grind

Nice daven , Ive started to enjoy the game more since integrated mtts and cash together . The mtts give ya shots to move up in one swoop and cash keeps the roll steadily replenished . Nice read you got going here , keep it up .

Every couple of months I have to check blogs and operations if there's an active daven blog. As long as there is, I know the world is just fine. Except for north korea. Or most of the world actually. Let me rephrase that: as long as there's a daven blog I know daven is just fine, and that's good enough for me.
    Have a good 2014!

a friend wants to cash in the christchurch marathon in a couple of months, top five pay. I've been enlisted to help on the training front, specifically with motivation on the weekly 30k(m). Guess that means i'm in marathon training mode too. So far it seems to involve two things:
    1 - tired legs
    2 - much appetite

in other news, i'm feeling pretty fit... Some decent mileage out running, riding a bunch, a little bit of time in the water surfing or diving, training at the boulder wall three times a week = that's my cross-training under control i reckon.
    playing some occasional poker too.
here's a couple of tracks that i still love to listen to from time to time, keeping it local

A7 hand - I think river should be a bet almost always. He really doesn't have any air on this runout so it's hard to expect a bet here. You happened to get a shove from a hand that in NO WAY should ever be betting/shoving cause there is just no reason. I think mostly you'll get checks though.

I think you're right. Sizing though? I guess we're targeting the Qx/TT stuff he can have right?

In other news there was dodgy shit going on at the tables i was at, and i was finding it annoying cos i don't like cheats in my games, so:

Very astute of you. Can you describe, at least in vague terms, the dodgy shit? It sounds interesting.

nah. Over the years i've identified a few players i have suspected of cheating in my games, then collated a little bit of info to basically make myself confident that they are in fact cheating. When i have been convinced I have then flicked the info to support to let security do the rest. About 80% of the time I have been correct. Better way to word that is that 80% of the time the accounts of the players in question have been closed. I suspect i have been correct every time. Definitely not going into any further detail.

This is one thing that really scares me about Bovada. No way in hell you can detect cheating with anonymous tables. But everyone tells me, "You can make lots of money on Bovada".

wow, it's been a while. Haven't played a hand of poker the last two weeks. I'm about ready to move out of poker and on to something else. 5 years since i last had a job! wow. So i started looking for contract work a little while back. Two weeks of contract data work has been heaps fun and it's pretty cool that the hourly is fixed, guaranteed. Not an ounce of variance in sight. I expect another couple of weeks on this project, and then i'll decide what next. I suspect i'll end up doing the occasional data contract and in between just cruising rather than playing poker - see what happens. Not sure whether i should be looking for a permanent job, pros and cons....

running is going well. I'm faster and fitter than ever before. There's a local 10km hill loop that i occasionally time trial. Two big hills. My goal is to do it in sub-40mins. I'm inching slowly closer, but it's still going to be a tough ask. I've moved from 50minutes down to sub 44 over the last few months. The finish is a bit wrong = the last hill is a tiny bit bigger than i've mapped, but it's about right.

I ran a long run a few weeks ago too. about 75% of trail and unsealed road, 25% tarmac. Was good to see that i could comfortably run the distance without stopping. It got a bit heavy towards the end, but i was fine to run again next day. Haven't hit 300km in a month yet, but i'm always doing 200+ and i'm still on the improve. Racing a five km on a hill course next weekend, it's going to be interesting.... and a half marathon in a few weeks.
    here's the long run.

gut is a good start. Things don't feel right. Then do some database research looking for the sort of things you would imagine colluders would do if they were soft-playing etc

May 2014. A few hands at the start of the month, and then four weeks of zero poker. Interesting. And a net losing poker month too!
It's funny viewing poker from this new perspective, and looking back on my poker journey since first encountering it in Mendoza back in late 2006...
It's manic and magic that I managed to make (eke?!) a living from poker as my sole source of income for five whole years.
Adjusting into a suited life hasn't been as difficult as anticipated, I've completed the original project brief and now they want me to do some more data stuff. Another few weeks perhaps.
anyway, my three poker sessions in May 2014:

six weeks since i played any poker... And it's a sunday, so it's now two days since I wrote any code... I completed the data project i was brought in for far more quickly than the company had anticipated, and they decided to set me loose on a few other things they wanted done. On Thursday afternoon a project manager/business analyst role came up via an associated company, the owner of the company i'm working for called me into a meeting a few minutes later. He wants me to stay on in a BAU capacity for a while, basically on my terms (his words, not mine).

Now i'm in debate mode - go to PM/BA fixed term contracting in a big change project for one of NZ's bigger companies (and likely end up working a fascinating project but with the downside of huge hours), or stay where i'm at for a while working something like Tue-Fri 28hrs a week and having heaps of time to do cool stuff as the days start getting longer.... Nice debate to be having

I'm enjoying the work-buzz, and after a few weeks i got used to the structure and routine enough to be able to start fitting life in around it more effectively.

Last weekend I raced a 3km run-20km bike-6km run sprint distance duathlon. Kinda. I'd been talking smack with some friends beforehand and made the claim that with a forty five minute head start I could run the whole distance (i.e. run the bike leg) and beat them over the course. Race director loved the idea... I started out quick and slowed down. Unfortunately the race start got delayed so there was no chance of them catching me over the distance. Longest run i've ever done at race pace and it felt good!

Enjoying life right now, even if it's a bit tight squeezing everything in.

mostly 25nl and 50nl, some 10nl, some 100nl depending on all sorts of things. More FR than 6-max, but i've played a lot of both now. Number of tables has varied a lot. Anywhere from four to sixteen. Most often the 8-10 range.

raced a fun half marathon last weekend. Cut seven minutes off my old pb. Still pretty slow by hardcore runner standards, but good for a plodder and i'm stoked with how fit i'm feeling.

On the work buzz as per my last post -> After a lot of soul-searching it became apparent that business-as-usual stuff at the company I was contracting to isn't likely to be a good idea for either party. It's not what I want to do medium or long-term so i'd find it pretty hard to be psyched and i'd be looking elsewhere from the get-go. I also decided not to throw my hat in the ring for the fixed term project role for two reasons: 1= i don't really like working huge hours, and 2 = they're looking at the role starting pronto and i feel like a few weeks of chilling out I wonder how i'll feel about those decisions a few weeks from now.

so.. upshot is that I'm back to being a free agent, with an expectation of occasional report writing and database work for the people i was working for whenever they go into planning or strategy mode. I guess i'll play some poker as well? maybe, it's hard to predict the future at the moment.

p.s. zero hands of poker thus far in June. It's turning into quite a long break from the grind!

hmmm, i threw some feelers out the last couple of weeks...
at current glance the options appear to be:
    a) postdoc with supersolid salary in a place i wouldn't mind spending a few years for warmwater surf/climb/party reasons, but not here
    b) data contract work, but not here
    c) wait a bit for something to come up here, and in the meantime coldwater surf and enjoy the bumlife

    decisions...

in other news.. journos are funny sometimes. So, i'd done a pretty good job going on and off record as appropriate for a piece that is being written, but the journo involved hadn't even thought of discussing that sort of thing in reverse. She got pretty stressed when i suggested that i might mention some of the intel she had given to me to an interested party i told her not to worry her pretty lil' head, and i think i've got yet another industry/politico journo to be somewhat biased in my favour. Ahh, the games we play. Poker helped on that front. Poker forum politics probably helped even more. And werewolf has sharpened my claws...

Interesting choices, how do you like where you're living? Idk how much financial stuff plays a role for you.

Would you aim for an academic career if you took the postdoc role?

huge fan of where i live, i'm glad - given that i bought a house here a couple of years ago. Re financial stuff, $$ are far from being my primary motivation. I can live well cheaply, one of the upsides of loads of travel and climbing dirtbagging over the years I guess? Still dunno re academia, i was at the pub talking about just that with a recently confirmed (=tenured) friend of mine on Friday - pros and cons...

    anything stand out?

also, ran yet another half marathon ten days ago. Cut another 2 minutes. Went out far too fast and was dead after three km (around 11 minutes ooops), spent the next ten km trying to recover and eventually reached the finish line in one piece.

surely they should be able to catch them without my help.
anyway, don't cheat in my games etc
once i was certain they were cheating i started freerolling hands with them, nothing to lose so i put all my chips in more than i normally would have

2014 was a pretty tough year on the poker front - struggled to make enough to live like I want to live without dipping into life-roll, i worked a two month data contract somewhere in the middle and it was relaxing.
2015 and not psyched so i pulled my roll to start over. Well, kinda. I struggled to stick to starting over at $50 and 5nl but, meh, whatever. Stakes are what they are, just gotta make sure you got the roll for it.

anyway, i started looking somewhat more seriously at alternatives.
now it's time to pull the pin.
Boom. I'm back in the game.

a couple of months ago i returned to the suited data analysis and strategic policy fold.
it had been six years since i'd left that game to switch to poker as my only income. And now it's been two months without a single hand and i'm easy about how that feels.

it's been an interesting journey and along the way i've learnt a lot
and now i'm in a very different game.

what i've gained the last six years will stand me in good stead
i'll be back on here to wrap things up properly with an ama or something once i've got some time to spend online, right now i'm barely at a screen outside of work and that feels like a healthy way to spend winter with its limited daylight hours.

    life is good.
    thanks FTR

i've spent the last four months without using internet at home, and only rarely outside of work related stuff at work. And living sans smartphone. It's been a good experiment/journey.

changing cities has been interesting and fun. friends are living in my house in dunedin and i fly down there a bit to check in on that life. work has been busy - stimulating and interesting luckily. work looks like sending me to europe to do some negotiating at the UN early next year. good times.

still haven't touched poker since i started this new work gig. sometime.

farewell davenigma - it's been a blast! millions of hands since 2006, you've done me well. Closing off of yet another part of my 'daven' poker persona, it's been in hibernation a year now - back to my irl dave... funny looking back at that year where i touched some poker sanity void space for a bit and that daven persona became fairly front and centre a lot of the time!

yeah, so this is about what is new news to me (only a month out of date!) = full tilt and stars merging platforms.
And my ftp account will be retired/merged into my stars account.

super healthy, got heaps done. It's nice not to be connected all the time. We don't need to be, and it's easy to forget that. Weekends in the mountains with no cell signal are good for that. Especially now that i'm working full-time in an office situation again.

How long you been going out into the mountains? I know you're quite an outdoorsy person in general. Climbed/walked anywhere good? I can only imagine NZ is great for it.

Me and a mate of mine have been going on a few long walks and shit recently as a better way to spend the day than in a pub drinking. Recently did a slightly longer version of this http://www.walkingenglishman.com/peakdistrict07.htm was a good day out. Obviously more hills than mountains lol but some of the views were great, got quite foggy at one point too looked really cool.

about since i could walk. been plenty of good places. Some of my more interesting trips have been soloing little mountains in the Cordon del Plata in the Argentinian Andes, big transalpine trips ith solid crew in the New Zealand southern alps, a 40 day autumn/winter hermit trip from the atlantic to the med through the pyrennees - no phone, no etc, good writing/thinking/exploration of self time back in 2003, um, others, plenty.
did this as a fun daytrip with some mates last summer -mixture of running fast and less fast: http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-rec...-pass-circuit/

i'm working in a sector (climate change response etc) that i'm interested in and feel like i have some skin in the outcome
about 20% of my role is figuring out how to create difficult datasets in SSRS off a variety of data source types and then building stuff, which is about the right amount of that type of thinking - i don't want to work for an IT shop, but it's nice to utilise some of that type of skill/thinking sometimes
i've got a decent amount of autonomy
not *too* much of my job is monotonous - it's hard to avoid even interesting stuff feeling that way sometimes though
key for me in the role now is that i've got decent sector experience and am somehow among the go-to people on a bunch of topics.
I was at a UN thing for a week a few months back and really enjoyed training people from around the place in some stuff, and then drinking with them afterwards. Even better, the week was based in that small town in germany that i moved to the month i finished up working in nz and went fulltime on the poker buzz in 2009...

my glasses are a bit less rose-tinted now though. It's just under 2+1/2 years that i've been there now and a lot of the learning phase/buzz that i enjoy in new roles is played. I think key for me comes down to a few things:
    good people
caring about the result of the work i do
believing in the possibility of the work i do delivering results i believe in.

part of me sometimes feels like upping sticks again, hitting the road, seeing what happens. Likely off to south america in april for a month long binge of hiking/mountaineering/coke. Guess i'll make some decisions after that
